Dependency update: AISimulate #578 now extracts the neutral core hooks, conversation lineage, and shared Rust execution entry. The planned order is #578 → Dynamo #16854 → AISimulate #306 final AgentX acceptance; #15240 remains optional. The current diff below still uses the earlier Python bridge and will be rewritten to consume the existing native Rust composition after the prerequisite.

Summary

Run conversation-aware AgentX simulation in AISimulate's default engine stack while calling independently installed Dynamo policy interfaces. AISimulate owns traffic, conversation lineage, virtual time, execution and reports. Dynamo owns worker selection, cache indexing, native admission and affinity state.

The engine.router adapter translates simulation events into native scheduler/affinity calls. A router-neutral Python callback bridge reuses the existing replay executor. No Dynamo routing implementation or build dependency is packaged in AISimulate. Dispatch commit/abort, cancellation and policy wakeups preserve native ownership and simulated time. Unsupported authored KV-fetch hints fail explicitly in the Dynamo adapter.

Rebased onto main aeb05094a243dc0a054731ac11e63d1af49b6e89. Removed unrelated lockfile changes, a forwarding wrapper, repeated documentation and duplicate lifecycle test bodies. The new CLI acceptance test is explicitly owned by the replay area; generated CODEOWNERS is included.

Dependency order

  1. Dynamo #16854 supplies the native Python interfaces first.
  2. This PR consumes those interfaces and completes acceptance in AISimulate.
  3. Dynamo #15240 optionally updates Dynamo's downstream simulation integration.

Only AISimulate and an API-capable ai-dynamo-runtime are required. The ai-dynamo simulation plugin is absent from acceptance. #15631's manual-clock/affinity APIs remain actively reused. No release backport is requested.

Validation

AISimulate 9beb4811f46d1a60b6130b11da0b989ddce694cc; Dynamo API c2e854fe829445dfb22128f082a053f9f37a425c.

  • Built and installed both current wheels in the standalone environment.
  • 24 CLI cases and two adapter lifecycle cases passed with AISIM_REQUIRE_DYNAMO_ROUTER=1: vLLM/SGLang, aggregated/P-D, session/sibling binding, cache reuse/off, tokenization, decode transfer, snapshot/warmup/profile and Weka lineage. Import guards prohibit delegation to Dynamo replay/router/planner Python modules.
  • Seven packaging cases passed; three optional Dynamo-plugin contracts skipped because the plugin is absent.
  • All 107 CODEOWNERS tests passed and strict coverage is 4,071/4,071 tracked files.
  • Formatting, documentation destinations and packaged legal-file consistency passed. Full GitHub CI runs on the current commit.

Start review with python/aisimulate/src/aisimulate/router.py, crates/core/src/python/external_policy.rs and tests/test_conversation_routing_cli.py. Fixtures use authored traffic and fixed timings; functional acceptance does not establish hardware accuracy or Python transport performance. Adaptation provenance remains in packaged notices.

Part of #38.

Linked repositories findings

ai-dynamo/dynamo

Event Protocol Compatibility:

  • The event protocol start_position field (stored events) and block_hashes field (removals) are confirmed in use across Dynamo's KV-hashing and routing modules (lib/kv-hashing/src/compute.rs, lib/kv-router/src/services/selection/). The adapter's event conversion in crates/dynamo-policy/src/events.rs:convert() correctly handles these fields with error propagation for start_position u32 conversion, matching the existing protocol. [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::]

Placement Policy Lifecycle:

  • Dynamo's existing KvRouterPlacement implements observation, cancellation, and terminal callbacks but not the new commit/abort/clock/wakeup hooks added to the PlacementPolicy trait. Since the new trait methods have default no-op implementations in the PR (crates/core/src/replay/core/mod.rs), existing Dynamo placements remain compatible without modification. [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::]

SelectionCore API Usage:

  • The adapter's use of SelectionCore in NativePlacement follows documented construction patterns (try_new_local, new_inner) and async method signatures found in Dynamo's own benchmarks and tests (lib/kv-router/benches/selection_core.rs, lib/kv-router/src/services/selection/core/tests.rs). No breaking API changes are evident. [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::]

Version Pinning and Installation:

  • Dynamo currently pins aisimulate-core = "=0.12.0" and aisimulate==0.12.0 across Cargo and Python manifests. The new optional adapter targets 0.13.0 and is explicitly documented as source-built and installation-coordinated (not auto-resolved). The PR includes validation and documentation directing users to match wheel versions (python/aisimulate-dynamo-policy/runner.py:70–100, docs/installation.md). No transitive version conflict is introduced for existing Dynamo deployments. [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::]

ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator

  • Aiconfigurator remains a frozen migration reference with no references to placement lifecycle, lineage, or the new Dynamo policy adapter APIs. No cross-repo breaking changes detected. [::ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator::]
📝 Summary

Risk: High. Human review should focus on:

  1. Native Dynamo routing, affinity, worker/DP bindings, and dispatch failure cleanup.
  2. Conversation lineage across snapshots, including ambiguous ancestry, cycles, and play namespaces.
  3. Plugin compatibility, automatic stack selection, and source-built package contracts.

Changes

  • Adds YAML-driven dynamo-policy routing with session or sibling-group affinity. Missing or incompatible plugins fail without fallback.
  • Adds versioned conversation lineage and placement-policy commit, abort, clock, and wakeup APIs.
  • Adds agentic profiling with admission cutoffs, cancellation, reporting, and resource limits.
  • Adds native plugin packaging, CI and release checks, and user documentation.

Evidence

  • The supplied summaries describe targeted tests for routing, affinity, cache events, lineage, dispatch lifecycle, wakeups, profiling, CLI selection, and packaging. Coverage includes vLLM and SGLang aggregated and disaggregated execution.
  • The objectives report 31 dispatch tests, 450 replay tests, and 9 native compatibility tests passing. They also report 56 paired-wheel installed tests passing with zero skips. This is source-equivalent evidence, not a final-head rebuild.
  • The current revision is 90551eaa69f2a9eaec05f6a304b8f9088903e1b5. The worktree is clean, and the diff summary is empty.
  • Current-head hosted checks and complete review findings are not established. Review severity counts are unavailable. The supplied review descriptions are not approval.

Merge readiness

The supplied evidence describes targeted regression coverage and explicit failure handling. It does not establish current-head qualification or approval. Confirm hosted checks, package and container qualification, current review findings, and human approval before merging.

The change adds continuous agentic profiling, placement lifecycle and wakeup handling, schema-versioned conversation lineage, native Dynamo policy routing, configuration-driven stack selection, and packaging and CI validation.

Full details: Cross-Layer Contract

Explanation

No stale cross-layer contract was found. The router and affinity schema is validated in Python and Rust, carries through the adapter and native runner, and is covered by provider and installed-CLI tests. Profile defaults and constraints align between Python and Rust, and the profile report is serialized and retained by the Python runner; CLI, runtime, and documentation consumers are present. Conversation lineage is carried through snapshot identities, checks the schema before sibling routing, and preserves legacy JSON through a serialization test. The new placement lifecycle hooks are documented and tested in aggregated and disaggregated replay, including wakeup and failure paths.

Full details: Modeling And Data Evidence

Explanation

The PR supplies reproducible before/after evidence and held-out comparisons for its model/selection logic claims. Evidence provided for selection logic and cache behavior: 1. Parametrized tests with held-out controls: test_yaml_selects_native_dynamo_with_real_affinity_and_cache() establishes a baseline by running the identical configuration with physical prefix caching disabled, then validates first_admission_prefix_cache_reused_ratio == 0 with all requests showing zero reused tokens. This held-out comparison (cold run) directly demonstrates cache functionality. 2. Machine-readable data summaries: The test assertions validate actual JSON report fields including overlap_blocks, best_available_overlap_blocks, physical_kv_events, decision_count, decisions_by_role, and dynamo_revision. The Rust tests verify assert_eq!(chosen.cache_sample.unwrap().overlap_blocks, 4) and assert_eq!(next.cache_sample.unwrap().best_available_overlap_blocks, 0) — concrete numbers tied to physical cache state transitions. 3. Independent oracle via engine signals: The test compares routing decisions against actual engine routing history: assert decision["overlap_blocks"] == route["selected_overlap_blocks"] and assert decision["worker_id"] == route["logical_worker_id"], validating that native selection predictions match engine-executed choices. 4. Explained observations: The quickstart documentation explicitly discloses that the claimed numbers (219 successes, 95.65% prefix reuse, 482 decisions, 3,042 KV events, 258 MB peak) are "functional validation observations, not fixed expected counts, a general memory bound, or hardware accuracy claims; native stochastic selection can change the results." It provides the exact reproducible configuration (two-play Weka subset, seed 42, AIC timing, 4GB budget, two lanes, vLLM/SGLang) and invites repeated runs as comparison baseline. 5. Before/after coverage for compatibility fixes: The PR description documents specific corrections: "omitted native TTL previously failed deserialization and now runs real selection/cache reuse in both topologies" and "failed dispatch callbacks previously retained accepted engine ownership" — indicating the changes enable working behavior that was broken. Tests verify the affinity TTL defaults to 3600 seconds when omitted. What is NOT present but not required: The custom check requires provenance for "formulas, selection logic, model/performance data, or predicted outputs." The PR does not claim statistical models or hardware performance predictions; it uses deterministic engine simulation with stochastic routing decisions. The documentation appropriately disclaims hardware accuracy and invites users to run their own experiments with the provided reproducible configuration. The 9 native policy tests exercise affinity TTL handling, worker binding lifecycle, cache index observation, and clock precision without requiring external oracles. CLI acceptance tests parametrize across backends (vLLM/SGLang), topologies (aggregated/disaggregated), and affinity modes (session/sibling_group) across 16 cells, validating that native selection integrates correctly in all combinations.

Full details: Compatibility Boundaries

Explanation

The pull request maintains compatibility boundaries for Python and Rust public surfaces, schemas, versions, bindings, and documented defaults. Evidence confirms: Version Synchronization: - Python and Rust versions are synchronized at 0.13.0 for both base (aisimulate, aisimulate-core) and optional (aisimulate-dynamo-policy, aisimulate-dynamo-policy) packages. - Rust crates/dynamo-policy/Cargo.toml pins aisimulate-core with version = "=0.13.0" (exact). - Python python/aisimulate-dynamo-policy/pyproject.toml pins aisimulate==0.13.0 (exact). - Build scripts validate exact version matches before building wheels. Public API Surface Synchronization: - AgenticProfileOptions is public in both Rust (crates/core/src/replay/loadgen/profile.rs) and Python (python/aisimulate/src/aisimulate/config/traffic.py). - Rust exports AgenticIdleShift and AgenticProfileReport via pub use profile::* in crates/core/src/replay/loadgen/mod.rs. - Python re-exports AgenticProfileOptions in aisimulate.config.__init__.py via __all__. - AgenticConversationLineage struct and AGENTIC_CONVERSATION_LINEAGE_SCHEMA_V1 constant are re-exported publicly in crates/core/src/replay/mod.rs. Documented Defaults Synchronized: - Rust defaults (from crates/core/src/replay/loadgen/profile.rs): duration_seconds: 3600.0, response_grace_seconds: 30.0, cancel_drain_seconds: 10.0, tree_idle_cap_seconds: 300.0, global_idle_cap_seconds: 10.0. - Python defaults (from python/aisimulate/src/aisimulate/config/traffic.py): identical field defaults with matching types and ranges. - Affinity TTL default: both Rust (crates/dynamo-policy/src/lib.rs line 55-56: default_affinity_ttl_seconds() -> 3600.0) and Python (python/aisimulate-dynamo-policy/src/aisimulate_dynamo_policy/provider.py: ttl_seconds: float = Field(default=3600, ...)). AISimulate Remains Standalone from Dynamo: - Core Rust crate (crates/core/Cargo.toml) has no Dynamo dependency. - Base Python wheel (python/aisimulate/pyproject.toml) has no dynamo-policy dependency. - Dynamo dependency (dynamo-kv-router at rev d9eb42db1168131fdae318eef77255637e4d3495) is isolated to crates/dynamo-policy only. - crates/dynamo-policy is excluded from the root workspace: exclude = ["crates/tests/public-api", "crates/dynamo-policy"]. - Dynamo-policy has its own separate lockfile at crates/dynamo-policy/Cargo.lock. Artifact Contract Updated Correctly: - docs/artifact-contract.md is updated to document the new optional aisimulate-dynamo-policy wheel as a separately built adapter. - Documentation clarifies that the base release remains unchanged and dynamo-policy is source-built (not published to an index). - Contract specifies exact version alignment between base and optional wheels, matching Rust versions, and synchronized source digests. - Build scripts (scripts/build_dynamo_policy.py, scripts/apply_dev_version.py, scripts/build_release_artifacts.py) validate all version and dependency contracts before writing artifacts. API Contract Versioning: - native_replay_contract() in core exports api_version: 1, core_version, and core_source_sha256. - Dynamo-policy wrapper validates both core and plugin contracts report matching API version 1, identical versions, and identical core source SHA256. - Build-time source digest (AISIMULATE_CORE_SOURCE_SHA256) is computed in crates/core/build.rs and compared at runtime. Bindings Synchronized: - Python runner (python/aisimulate-dynamo-policy/src/aisimulate_dynamo_policy/runner.py) validates all version synchronization at import time before any replay execution. - Entry points registered correctly: aisimulate.runner_factories:dynamo-policy and aisimulate.config_adapters:dynamo-policy.router. All explicit compatibility requirements are met; no unintended cross-layer dependencies exist, and the artifact contract boundaries are preserved with deliberate documentation updates.

Full details: Review Evidence

Explanation

The PR description names relevant commands and results: cargo +1.96.1 test -p aisimulate-core --lib (1708 passed), cargo +1.96.1 test --manifest-path crates/dynamo-policy/Cargo.toml --lib (9 passed), installed wheels (60/60 + 28/28 tests), container (88 tests), and manual execution (219 successes). Negative and boundary validation is extensive. The PR documents 17 invalid stamp inputs, 12 commit-failure cases, 2 engine-reject/abort cases, and tests for invalid/mixed installs, wakeup timing, profile cutoff, retracted work, cancellation, dispatch failure atomicity, and invalid manifests/pins/locks. Evidence is categorized by testing tier: local unit tests (cargo test), installed wheel integration tests (CLI/provider/admission), container system tests (clean archive), and manual end-to-end execution (Weka trace). The PR does not cite inactive CI workflows as evidence. Although the evidence section mentions "Fast CI / Full CI: final 90551ea checks are running" and acknowledges "Final-head hosted checks... were still being verified or obtained," it does not present specific CI test results as proof. All actual evidence cited—1708 passed, 9 passed, 60/60, 28/28, 88 tests, 219 successes—comes from local, installed, container, or manual sources, not CI workflows.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changeset includes substantial agentic-profile implementation, allocation-reuse work, source-digest changes, and broad packaging and CI changes beyond the stated primary objective of native conversation-aware Dynamo routing.

Resolution

Split unrelated agentic-profile, allocation-reuse, and independent infrastructure changes into separate pull requests, or expand the PR objectives and review map to justify each change and define its contract with the Dynamo-routing work.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description is detailed but does not accurately describe the submitted changes. It says the diff uses an earlier Python bridge and that no Dynamo routing implementation or build dependency is packaged, while the pull request adds the native Rust Dynamo policy package, packaging workflows, and native execution paths. It also omits the required template sections and fields for review risk, exact commands and results, reviewed commits, provenance, and tracking.

Resolution

Rewrite the description for the submitted commit. Use the required headings: Why and what changed, Review map, Evidence, Modeling or data provenance, and Tracking. Describe the native Rust and Python Dynamo policy implementation, packaging, stack selection, lineage, profiling, and dispatch lifecycle changes. Add exact validation commands and results, CodeRabbit and Codex reviewed commit hashes, negative cases, compatibility and rollback risks, and provenance details or N/A where applicable.

🔀 Multi-repo context ai-dynamo/dynamo, ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator

Linked repositories findings

ai-dynamo/dynamo

Inspected the provided PR #14521 checkout at detached commit 96bd8d9.

  • Dynamo pins aisimulate-core exactly to 0.12.0 in Cargo.toml:58-60, with the lockfile also resolving 0.12.0 at Cargo.lock:36-39. The new replay lineage/lifecycle contract will not reach Dynamo until this pin is intentionally updated. [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::]
  • Dynamo’s online replay consumes AgenticGraphIdentity via agentic_graph_identity() and records it in lib/mocker/src/replay/online/live_runtime.rs:144-149 and lib/mocker/src/replay/online/recorder.rs:56,160,236-243. No direct AgenticRuntimeIdentity or lineage-field construction was found. [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::]
  • Existing Dynamo fixtures explicitly use agent_context.session_id and parent_session_id in components/src/dynamo/replay/tests/e2e/fixtures/traces/dynamo-agentic.jsonl:3-4; these should remain distinct from the new optional conversation-lineage metadata. [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::]
  • KvRouterPlacement implements the existing policy methods at lib/mocker/src/replay/offline/extensions/kv_router/mod.rs:439-525, but does not override the new commit, abort, clock, or wakeup hooks. It will therefore use the trait’s no-op defaults unless separately qualified and updated. [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::]

ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator

  • AIC is a compatibility 0.12.0 release and directs new development to AISimulate; its migration guide and package metadata pin the 0.12.0 baseline. No replay identity, lineage, or placement-policy consumers were found. [::ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator::]

In `@crates/core/src/engine/scheduler/vllm/core.rs`:
- Line 2091: Update the committed request construction in the pass result around
EnginePassResult: retain scheduled requests with prompt_tokens greater than
zero, then add only scheduled requests whose output signal has a token_id. Sort
and deduplicate the resulting UUIDs, and use this filtered collection instead of
scheduled.keys() so requests removed before forward execution are excluded.

In `@crates/core/src/replay/agg.rs`:
- Around line 1049-1107: Make the cancel-drain deadline effective across both
cancellation paths: update cancel_expired_agentic_profile in
crates/core/src/replay/agg.rs at lines 1049-1107 and the corresponding
cancellation flow in crates/core/src/replay/disagg.rs at lines 2801-2824 so the
runtimes remain active until the deadline, then derive cancel_drain_timed_out
from remaining server work. Also ensure timestamp selection and the public
configuration/report schemas consistently retain and expose cancel_drain_seconds
and cancel_drain_deadline_ms.

In `@crates/core/src/replay/report.rs`:
- Around line 1891-1901: The agentic profile path currently overwrites
duration_ms before static worker-seconds and bounded summary calculations.
Preserve the reporting-epoch duration for static worker accounting and the
bounded summary, while using the successful-request observation duration only
for successful_request_throughput in the agentic profile update.

In `@docs/agentic-profile.md`:
- Around line 74-76: Update docs/agentic-profile.md lines 74-76 to describe the
observation interval as starting at the earliest arrival in the cohort
(stats.arrival_time_ms) and ending at the latest successful response. Keep
docs/agentx-quickstart.md lines 272-276 unchanged as the reference wording.
- Line 94: Update the smoke example section around the aisimulate predict
command to include the documented current-source environment setup before
execution, using the existing “Use current source” instructions and the uv sync
command for the python/aisimulate project with the dev extra.

In `@python/aisimulate/src/aisimulate/cli_args.py`:
- Around line 84-89: Update select_stack to base automatic selection on
router.policy rather than the presence of the router key: select dynamo-policy
only when config.get("router") is a mapping whose policy equals "kv_router";
otherwise return engine, while preserving explicit stack selection.

In `@scripts/apply_dev_version.py`:
- Line 95: Update the manifest stamping logic around the existing re.sub call to
use re.subn, require exactly one aisimulate pin replacement, and raise an error
when the replacement count is not one; write the updated text only after this
validation succeeds.

[warning] 66-66: Regex pattern passed to re is built from a non-literal (variable, call, concatenation, or f-string) value. Linked repositories findings

ai-dynamo/dynamo

  • Dynamo pins aisimulate-core to exactly 0.12.0 in Cargo.toml:59 and its lockfiles. The new replay lifecycle/wakeup APIs therefore are not part of Dynamo’s current dependency contract. [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::]
  • KvRouterPlacement implements the existing placement methods in lib/mocker/src/replay/offline/extensions/kv_router/mod.rs:439-525, but does not implement the new commit, abort, clock-advance, or wakeup hooks. It will rely on the trait defaults unless updated separately. [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::]
  • Dynamo’s replay composition directly uses KvRouterPlacement in lib/mocker/src/replay/offline/extensions/kv_router/composition.rs:149-225, so the optional AISimulate adapter should not assume Dynamo’s existing replay placement automatically provides the new lifecycle behavior. [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::]

ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator

  • Aiconfigurator is in maintenance-only transition to AISimulate and documents aisimulate==0.12.0 as its compatibility baseline in README.md:8-16,68-80. It contains no consumers of the new lineage, profiling, or placement-policy APIs. [::ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator::]

🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift

Restore error atomicity across dispatch callbacks.

engine.dispatch can accept the request before dispatch_committed returns an error. The caller then receives Err, but the engine and self.requests still retain the request. This is observable through submit_dynamic, because the caller can continue using the mutated runtime after the failed submission.

Rollback the engine dispatch when dispatch_committed fails. Notify the placement policy with dispatch_aborted. Also preserve the original engine error if dispatch_aborted fails after engine.dispatch fails. Add a placement policy that fails each callback and verify that a failed submission leaves no runnable request.

As per path instructions, “Trace each changed input through its real consumer and output” and prioritize “failure handling.”

Linked repositories findings

ai-dynamo/dynamo

  • Dynamo currently pins aisimulate-core to exactly 0.12.0 in Cargo.toml:58-59, Cargo.lock:36-38, and pyproject.toml:15-18. The optional adapter’s 0.13.0 contract therefore requires a coordinated Dynamo revision/package pin. [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::]
  • Offline replay directly implements PlacementPolicy through KvRouterPlacement in lib/mocker/src/replay/offline/extensions/kv_router/mod.rs:439-525, and uses it for both aggregated and disaggregated compositions in composition.rs:148-152. Existing Dynamo placement code does not provide the newly added lifecycle/wakeup hooks, so those behaviors depend on the adapter rather than the existing Dynamo implementation. [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::]
  • Dynamo’s selection API does expose explicit affinity and routing fields (affinity_target, routing_constraints) in lib/kv-router/src/services/selection/types.rs:433-439 and core/operation.rs:25-41, matching the adapter’s intended session/affinity integration. [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::]
  • The current checkout exposes router protocol types such as KvCacheEvent and RouterEvent; the focused search found no matching KvEvent declaration in the searched router/LLM/mocker paths. The adapter’s event bridge is therefore sensitive to the exact pinned Dynamo source revision. [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::]

ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator

  • Aiconfigurator is explicitly maintenance-only and directs new development to AISimulate in README.md:10-15; its migration documentation still uses aisimulate==0.12.0 as the compatibility baseline in README.md:68-80 and docs/aisimulate_migration.md:15-25. [::ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator::]
  • No consumers of the new Dynamo policy, lineage, profiling, or placement lifecycle APIs were found. The repository should remain a frozen compatibility reference rather than an integration target. [::ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator::]

Addressed the outside-diff dispatch error-atomicity finding in review 5283231249, in b0ffa3b (included in bd424a1).

An engine-accepted request is now rolled back if dispatch_committed fails: CancelRequest for aggregated execution, CancelSource for P, and CancelDestination for D. dispatch_aborted is always attempted, and original engine/commit errors remain in both the diagnostic and cause chain alongside cleanup failures. A failed callback leaves the runtime unusable for further submission, execution or reports because arbitrary policy/collector side effects cannot safely be rolled back. Ordinary P/D engine rejection with a successful abort retains the coordinator's existing failure handling.

Twelve commit-failure cases and two engine-reject/abort-failure cases reproduced on the previous implementation. The fixed dispatch suite passes 31 tests; the replay suite passes 450. Both vLLM and SGLang, both P/D roles, successful/failed abort callbacks, preserved duplicate ownership, and rejection of runtime reuse are covered. The shared #307 cache-only cancellation correction is also integrated; fresh matched host/container packages and current-head hosted checks are being verified separately.

Addressed the non-inline Compatibility Boundaries warning in 75b5ca1, now included in 05a78e4. Public native execute now defaults omitted affinity.ttl_seconds to 3600, matching Python for both affinity modes; invalid explicit values remain errors. The actual native execution regression omits TTL and verifies Dynamo selection, worker/DP affinity and physical cache reuse in aggregated and P/D paths. It failed with the prior missing-field error and now passes; all 9 native tests pass.

The CLI/Sweeper public-guide follow-through from #307 is also included. All review surfaces (inline, outside-diff, global risk and pre-merge fields) were audited; remaining acceptance is the final matching package/CLI/container qualification, current-head hosted checks and applicable human approval. Required Evidence/Tracking fields are present in the description.

Addressed the remaining cross-layer documentation warning from the full review walkthrough in 4ca51943, included in current head cbcb10e5075639748498938ce236019e771543f5.

The public CLI guide now documents stack selection after --set (explicit choice wins; a present router selects dynamo-policy; absent routing retains engine), native policy and independent affinity/TTL fields, and distinct installation/troubleshooting for the native plugin and legacy --stack dynamo. The installation guide links the same-source paired-wheel procedure and explicitly distinguishes source-build availability from package-index publication. It also preserves unsupported configurations and planner boundaries.

The shared predict --help now describes offline aggregated/P-D, snapshot/warmup/duration and the functional-only limits. Verified against parser/default/schema sources, local links and the formatted help from freshly built and clean-installed current-head wheels. The executable Python AST excluding the help string, all Rust/core/plugin sources, dependencies and container builder are unchanged from qualified 05a78e49; prior container evidence remains labeled with that source head. New exact-head CI and full review are tracked separately.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Reject duplicate YAML mapping keys.

PyYAML’s safe_load keeps the last value for a duplicate mapping key. Duplicate policy or affinity entries can therefore change the router configuration consumed by aisimulate-dynamo-policy without an error. Duplicate router entries do not change stack selection because select_stack checks only key presence, but they can still replace the router mapping. Use a loader that raises _CliConfigError for duplicate keys, and add a negative CLI test.

ai-dynamo/dynamo

  • Dynamo currently pins aisimulate-core = "=0.12.0", aisimulate==0.12.0, and its staged requirements also require 0.12.0 (Cargo.toml:58-59, pyproject.toml:14-17, container/deps/requirements.aisimulate.txt:5). The new optional adapter targets 0.13.0, so installation must remain explicitly coordinated with matching AISimulate/Dynamo revisions. [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::]
  • Existing KvRouterPlacement implements placement, observation, cancellation, terminal, prefill, worker, and topology callbacks, but no commit/abort, clock, or wakeup hooks (lib/mocker/src/replay/offline/extensions/kv_router/mod.rs:443-525). The new default trait hooks preserve source compatibility, but existing Dynamo placement will not gain TTL wakeup behavior automatically. [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::]
  • Dynamo’s public event contract includes Stored, Removed, and Cleared variants (lib/kv-router/src/protocols.rs:1243-1248), with start_position: Option<u32> on stored events and block_hashes on removals (:1255-1261, :1384-1387). The adapter’s event conversion should remain aligned with this exact pinned protocol, including handling of clear/reset events. [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::]

ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator

  • Aiconfigurator is a frozen compatibility release: its migration guide targets aisimulate==0.12.0 and directs new integrations to AISimulate (docs/aisimulate_migration.md:8-25, :69-72). No references to the new Dynamo policy, lineage, profiling, or placement lifecycle APIs were found. [::ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator::]

Fixed the outside-diff duplicate-key finding from review 5283902898 in eed265fe, included in current cfdbb970. File configuration and --set mapping values now reject duplicate authored keys before schema/runner execution or report replacement. Validation happens before YAML merge expansion, preserving aliases, merge precedence, explicit inherited-value overrides and sequential --set overrides.

All 12 actual CLI negative cases failed before the fix; all 22 focused cases now pass, including nested router/policy/affinity keys, aliases/merges and existing error ordering/output preservation. Ruff/format/syntax/whitespace pass. The final current-source paired wheels/container and exact-head CI are being verified separately; no dependency override is used for release qualification.

Please review current head 90551eaa69f2a9eaec05f6a304b8f9088903e1b5. The previous e9d5d27 review ended with “Pull request base or head changed,” so it is not complete current-head evidence. Native-policy initial trace guards now cover finite and profiled runs while preserving unqualified total memory and supervised serial admission. The quickstart uses two complete pinned Weka plays (162 recursive model requests), two lanes, 64-token source blocks, and a 4 GB supervised budget. Matching e9d5d27 installed wheels and an independently built container pass 60 policy/CLI tests plus 28 admission regressions; runtime sources are unchanged by the final documentation merge. The documented 3600-second routed configuration completed with 219 successful requests, no cancellations or unsettled server work, and actual native policy/cache evidence.

@coderabbitai Please reassess the global legacy/empty-router compatibility warning for 90551ea against the supported baseline entry points.

  • On main 860311200b793f70d2fae578bcdbce99ba85774d, --stack defaults to engine. Section resolution therefore requests engine.router, which is not supplied by the built-in engine. The original regression explicitly checks that legacy router: {policy: round_robin} without any --stack exits 2 with engine.router unavailable.
  • The baseline user guide already requires explicit --stack dynamo for Dynamo routing and Planner behavior. A saved legacy recommendation YAML did not previously infer Dynamo automatically.
  • Current selection preserves every explicit stack first, and still selects engine when no router is supplied. The published contract explicitly describes strict empty/invalid-router rejection and retention of --stack dynamo for legacy predict/recommend configurations. Missing or incompatible integrations cannot silently fall back.

We also compared 14 real CLI invocations using installed wheels, outside source trees and without PYTHONPATH, source/native or dependency overrides. The exact main wheel comes from main Full CI 35768552063, artifact 10713402770 (SHA256 c508248e569aa794902d1c01d292aeed0e34bef0f4250b67e52f53a34f998e9b). The current paired wheels are from e9d5d279; the final 90551eaa only changes Markdown.

Run aisimulate predict --config config.yaml --format json --output-dir output in each installed environment. Repeat in separate output directories with --set 'router={}', --set 'router={policy: round_robin}', and the explicit stack choices in the table. The actual probe used equivalent YAML files for each case. No model download or real GPUs are needed.

For the shipped stacks, the evidence shows preserved supported entry points and a changed diagnostic/selection path for previously rejected implicit-router inputs. Unspecified third-party engine.router adapters are not claimed as qualified; explicit --stack engine retains that choice under the documented precedence rule. Please identify a previously supported successful invocation if a regression remains. The Moderate warning is retained in the review record while this evidence is assessed; passing CI/pre-merge checks are not used to dismiss it. Human CODEOWNER/domain review and main freshness remain merge gates.

Requesting changes to the shared execution boundary, coordinated with ai-dynamo/dynamo#15240. Please keep the neutral lineage/lifecycle hooks and the one-way dependency boundary, but make the common execution seam sufficient for Dynamo to migrate its existing offline replay flow instead of maintaining a separate affinity/profile path.

This is an extension of the shared executor, not a request to move Dynamo policies into AISimulate or revert the generic hooks. Existing optional telemetry and Planner result handling must remain available during consolidation; telemetry is not an affinity input. The requested change can be additive and does not inherently require breaking PlacementPolicy/ReplayComposition. I am not attributing the new orchestration split to #307's duration-profile implementation.

Request changes: 4 merge blockers

Thanks for the lineage and lifecycle hooks. On the built-in engine path they are regression-free. I compared this head with the merge base 88c7d426 on 13 end-to-end aisimulate predict configs (synthetic, Mooncake, agentic, disaggregated, AFD and Weka workloads): every config produces the same per-request results and the same prediction.json apart from the new lineage fields. The tools/simulation_perf_gate scenarios, run locally on macOS, are flat (geometric mean head/base 0.985). The native-router quickstart also runs end to end with only aisimulate installed: 42 requests, 64 routing decisions per pool, no dispatch aborts.

It still can't merge because of the four issues below. B1–B3 each come with a failing example, and B4 needs a maintainer decision. Everything was reproduced on head e407510d.

B1: the wheel only builds against an unmerged Dynamo draft

crates/python/Cargo.toml:27-29 pins dynamo-kv-router, dynamo-custom-policy-builtin and dynamo-tokens to 85ce615a, and the wheel is built from that crate (python/aisimulate/pyproject.toml:114). 85ce615a is the head of ai-dynamo/dynamo#16490: a draft with no reviews, one commit on top of Dynamo main's f5c36597 on branch harrli/aic-1817-admission-barrier. The router calls the method that draft adds (crates/python/src/native_router/router.rs:733).

Failing example: pin the same three crates to any merged Dynamo revision, either the commit #16490 is based on or current Dynamo main:

sed -i '' 's/85ce615a409d61144c5b94ce74dae3f7291573dd/f5c36597428cae20a0c4a0c7cecf73eec79e1c0b/g' crates/python/Cargo.toml
cargo check -p aisimulate-python
error[E0599]: no method named `admission_barrier` found for struct `Arc<LocalScheduler<NoopSequencePublisher, ReplayWorkerConfig, DefaultWorkerSelector>>` in the current scope
   --> crates/python/src/native_router/router.rs:733:42
    |
733 |                 .block_on(self.scheduler.admission_barrier())??;
    | ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ method not found in `Arc<LocalScheduler<NoopSequencePublisher, ReplayWorkerConfig, DefaultWorkerSelector>>`

error: could not compile `aisimulate-python` (lib) due to 1 previous error
Dynamo rev in crates/python/Cargo.toml cargo check -p aisimulate-python
85ce615a (draft #16490, this PR) OK
f5c36597 (Dynamo main, parent of #16490) E0599 admission_barrier
df2ab3a4 (current Dynamo main) E0599 admission_barrier

If this merges now, every main and nightly wheel is built from Dynamo code nobody has reviewed. And if #16490 changes during its own review, this repo keeps building the old draft without noticing.

Fix: land ai-dynamo/dynamo#16490 first, re-pin these three crates to its merge commit on Dynamo main, then re-run the native-router validation. The PR body and quickstart should then name the merged revision.

B2: the PR's own test fails, so Full CI is red

tests/test_resource_supervision.py::test_supervisor_reports_default_or_explicit_routing_stack[None-dynamo] fails on both contracts shards for this head (amd64, arm64), with 1 failed, 4451 passed. Local repro:

$ pytest "tests/test_resource_supervision.py::test_supervisor_reports_default_or_explicit_routing_stack" -q
>       assert plan["stack"] == expected
E AssertionError: assert 'engine' == 'dynamo'
FAILED tests/test_resource_supervision.py::test_supervisor_reports_default_or_explicit_routing_stack[None-dynamo]
1 failed, 2 passed

Cause: select_stack now returns "engine" whenever --stack is omitted (python/aisimulate/src/aisimulate/cli_args.py:139-143), but the parametrize at tests/test_resource_supervision.py:350 still expects "dynamo". With the one-line suggestion inline, all three cases pass.

B3: a policy wakeup is dispatched before same-instant engine work is settled

The new drain-loop code calls advance_clock and dispatches the released placements before settle_internal_work runs for the same timestamp: crates/core/src/replay/agg.rs:899-901 and crates/core/src/replay/disagg.rs:2627-2631. The existing comment right below the new block (agg.rs:902-904, "Settle idle deadlines first…") already describes the intended order. PlacementPolicy::next_wakeup_ms documents future wakeups as the normal case (crates/core/src/replay/core/mod.rs:132-139). So any policy whose wakeup lands on an engine-internal deadline, such as a native host-offload transfer completing, hits this.

Failing example: the test file below uses only the public API: run_replay_with_composition plus a minimal PlacementPolicy that holds one request until its wakeup. The control and coincident runs differ only in the wakeup time, which moves by 0.25 ms. Drop the file into crates/core/tests/ and run cargo test -p aisimulate-core --test pr306_wakeup_ordering -- --nocapture:

aggregated wakeup 5.25 ms (control): Ok completed=5 ["1=Completed", "2=Completed", "3=Completed", "4=Completed", "5=Completed"]
aggregated wakeup 5.00 ms (coincident): Err engine error: engine internal work is due at 5ms by command time 5ms; process internal work and retry the command
P/D wakeup 3.25 ms (control): Ok completed=2 ["1=Completed", "2=Completed"]
P/D wakeup 3.00 ms (coincident): Ok completed=1 ["1=Completed", "2=Failed"]
test result: FAILED. 0 passed; 2 failed

In aggregated mode the whole replay aborts. In P/D mode, request 2 is reported as Failed and no error is raised. The built-in native router only returns same-time wakeups, and its affinity mode refuses host/G3 offload, so the shipped CLI path doesn't reach this today. Any composition that uses the documented future-wakeup contract does, and those compositions are what these neutral hooks are for.

Fix: settle first, then advance the policy clock (inline on agg.rs and disagg.rs). With both changes applied on this head:

  • the repro passes (2/2);
  • cargo test -p aisimulate-core is green (2,028 lib tests plus all integration tests);
  • cargo test -p aisimulate-python passes 40/40.

B4: the dependency-boundary change needs an explicit maintainer decision

Re-adding crates/python makes the aisimulate wheel compile Dynamo's routing crates (crates/python/Cargo.toml:27-29, built via python/aisimulate/pyproject.toml:114). Dynamo main already depends on AISimulate: aisimulate-core = { version = "=0.13.0-dev.2" } in its workspace dependencies (Cargo.toml:62 at df2ab3a4), consumed by lib/mocker. So the two repos now depend on each other, and installing aisimulate alone provides Dynamo KV routing: the quickstart above ran in a venv without any Dynamo package.

That reverses what the open reviews asked for:

  • tedzhouhk's change request (#306 (review)): "Please keep the neutral lineage/lifecycle hooks and the one-way dependency boundary".
  • dreamtalen's thread (#306 (comment)) asked to keep the generic lineage and lifecycle extensions here and move the Dynamo-specific adapter, provider/runner and entry-point registration to Dynamo. 60fd1bb7 ("keep Dynamo routing in the existing Dynamo integration") did that, and this head re-adds it.
  • REVIEW.md:134-137: "AISimulate is standalone. Dynamo is a downstream compatibility target, not a required runtime dependency. The release surface remains one aisimulate wheel and one aisimulate-core crate unless the artifact contract is changed deliberately."

Fix: either keep the Dynamo adapter in Dynamo as requested, or record a deliberate decision: sign-off on this PR from the reviewers above, plus updates to REVIEW.md:134-137 and the PR body's release-surface notes.

Non-blocking

  • python/aisimulate/src/aisimulate/resources.py:910 keys the router-memory guard ("Native routing retains additional state outside the engine estimate") on stack == "dynamo". Native routing now runs on the engine stack, so it gets the engine-only plan. On the quickstart corpus, --stack engine is planned as weka-materialized-v1 and admitted at parallelism 4, while the same snapshot workload on --stack dynamo gets dynamo-unqualified-v1 and is refused or serialized.
  • The advisory Forward Prediction Performance job flagged qwen3-32b warm generation (+11%). I reran the same harness (tools/forward_perf_gate/run.py, base 88c7d426 vs this head) on macOS arm64 without CPU pinning: PASS, 0 regressions in 128 comparisons, qwen3-32b warm generation +0.3% / -0.2%. I'm treating the CI flag as runner noise.

Addressed the review fixes in ddb93c8 and merged current main in 88e3aae, resolving all four source conflicts. B2 and both B3 threads are resolved; B1 (merged Dynamo pin) and B4 (reviewer agreement on the deliberate installation boundary) remain open.

The non-inline memory fix applies unknown-peak, supervised-serial admission to engine-stack native routing at CLI preflight (including --set), per-run guards, and whole-wave admission. Initial materialization refusals and lower bounds remain enforced, and observed trace peaks cannot requalify parallel native-router runs.

The main merge preserves tokenization across default and native/shared execution, with dispatch committed only after engine acceptance. Cancellation before engine ownership and delayed commit failure/rollback have regressions for vLLM and SGLang. Main's planned performance-model folding implementation is retained unchanged.

Current merged-source validation uses a freshly compiled native extension (SHA-256 bc65a14ec2be0d484d6365fd5808f85845ba5eafa2501210e69e63c535ed40d1):

  • Rust workspace with embed-python,replay-bench: 2,355 passed, one existing ignored.
  • Resource/supervision/unified-CLI/native-router/runner suites: 942 passed, no skips, including six real supervised CLI cases and both native-routing/tokenization combinations.
  • Both frozen engine-step and compile-engine parity suites: 390 passed, no skips or refreshed goldens.
  • Rust/Python formatting, whitespace and packaged legal-file checks pass.

New hosted CI results are pending; earlier successful runs are explicitly labeled with their source revision in the PR description.

Re-checked at 8b00c03. Main's tip c9e7363 is the merge-base, so this tree is the squash-merge result for today's main. B1, B2, B3 and the memory-guard note are fixed, and I verified each one:

  • B1: feat(router): expose an explicit admission barrier dynamo#16490 merged as f24c59b9. All three pins and the five Dynamo lockfile entries use that commit.
  • B2: fixed in f0a846f5.
  • B3: fixed in ddb93c89. The public-API repro from the review passes 2/2. With only the reorder reverted at this head, it fails 0/2 with the original errors.
  • Memory guard: without supervision, native routing on the engine stack is now refused. Under supervision, it runs serially. Plans for plain engine runs are unchanged.

There is no regression on the built-in engine path. Compared with main, all 13 e2e engine configs give identical results, and all 12 configs that accept engine.tokenization give identical per-request records with it enabled. CI is green, including the Prediction Regression Gate and Simulation Performance.

B4 is the only open item, and my change request now stands only on it. The review asked for sign-off on the new boundary from @tedzhouhk and @dreamtalen, and REVIEW.md:134-142 now documents that boundary. @jasonqinzhou, this PR also rewrites the standalone rule that you added in #118. Please tell us whether you accept the new boundary. I will approve after you sign off.

Re-checked at 8a0b0e8. The merge-base is c9e7363, and main's newer commit 7815f40 changes CI files only. Thank you for moving Dynamo routing out of the wheel. B4 is resolved: the wheel builds from crates/core, Cargo.lock has no Dynamo or Git package, and REVIEW.md matches main. I am resolving that thread.

What I verified at this head:

  • B3 still holds. The repro passes 2/2, and it fails 0/2 with only the reorder reverted.
  • The memory guard still applies to router.policy=kv_router.
  • Engine predictions match main: 13/13 e2e configs, and 12/12 per-request with engine.tokenization.
  • With a runtime built from ai-dynamo/dynamo#16854 (b5a8eab3) and no ai-dynamo package, tests/test_conversation_routing_cli.py passes 26/26 with AISIM_REQUIRE_DYNAMO_ROUTER=1.
  • I ran four AgentX variants with canonical_v1 determinism: aggregated and P/D, each with session and sibling_group. In all four, this head and 8b00c03 send every request to the same worker. requests.jsonl and prediction.json are identical. The bridge reproduces the old in-process routing exactly.

Three new problems block the merge. The inline comments have the repros and fixes.

  1. The bridge reads next_wakeup_ms with serde_json's default float parser, which does not round correctly. When the policy echoes the clock and the value comes back one ULP low, the replay aborts.
  2. kv_router without affinity accepts native host offload, then aborts on the first host-tier KV event. 8b00c03 completed the same run.
  3. resources.py:910 changes the memory plan for --stack dynamo users who configure no router. This line came in with 60fd1bb, was removed in bd5d1a9 and came back in e524d48. My earlier reviews missed it.

Two merge gates remain:

  • CI is red because tests/test_conversation_routing_cli.py has no owner. Add it to the replay area paths and to the shared globs in .github/codeowners/areas.yaml, next to tests/test_runner.py, then regenerate CODEOWNERS with emit_codeowners.py. With that change, both strict ownership checks pass locally.
  • The feature needs ai-dynamo/dynamo#16854, which is open with no reviews. After it merges, please rerun the acceptance suite against the merged revision.

Non-blocking:

  • Speed. I timed the full AgentX quickstart profile, with medians of 3 interleaved runs. Replay time is 7.14 s with the bridge and 2.12 s with the in-process routing at 8b00c03. Without a router it is 1.52 s. One 600 s run makes 177,890 policy calls for 128 placements. Skipping empty observe batches, repeated advance_clock calls at the same time and decode KV capture removes most of them. 8b00c03 turned decode capture off.
  • CI coverage. All 26 routing tests skip in hosted CI. After #16854 merges, a job that installs a pinned runtime and sets AISIM_REQUIRE_DYNAMO_ROUTER=1 closes the gap.
  • Docs. docs/reference/cli.md:108-109 and :373 still send router to --stack dynamo. docs/replay/agentic/quickstart.md:298 links to an anchor that bd5d1a9 removed. quickstart.md:326 still says that canonical seeds need a replay-bench build, but this head accepts canonical_v1 in the standard wheel.

NB1: serde_json here runs without float_roundtrip, so its float parsing does not round correctly. router.py:444 returns next_wakeup_ms=self.now_ms while a request waits, and runtime_utils.rs:105-109 requires wakeup_ms >= now_ms. When the echoed clock is read one ULP low, the run aborts.

Repro: take the tree from _conversation_prediction(tmp_path, "vllm", topology, "sibling_group"), set branch-b's not_before_ms to 20 so that it spawns together with branch-a, and add engine.tokenization: {workers: 1, base_ms: 0.13309929789368105, per_input_token_us: 1.3}. Aggregated and P/D both fail:

replay invariant violated: aggregated placement policy wakeup must be finite and not precede replay time 20.299499297893682ms; got 20.29949929789368ms

Six base times of this kind fail 12/12. With serde_json = { version = "1", features = ["float_roundtrip"] } in the root Cargo.toml, the same 12 cases pass, and the 13 engine e2e configs stay identical to main. Returning the wakeup as a Python float through PyO3 is the local alternative. Either way, please add a regression test with a non-integer clock and a waiting sibling. The acceptance suite uses integer timings, so it cannot reach this case.

NB2: the host and G3 offload check runs only when router.affinity is set. Without affinity, a kv_router run with host_offload is accepted. Then router.py:419-421 raises on the first host-tier event, because the bridge always captures engine KV events (external_policy.rs:278).

Repro: AgentX quickstart with one aggregated worker, capacity: {type: fixed, blocks: 4500}, host_offload: {num_host_blocks: 16384, d2h_bandwidth_gbps: 32.0, h2d_bandwidth_gbps: 32.0}, router: {policy: kv_router} and a 600 s profile. At this head it fails with external aggregated policy "observe": ValueError: routing requires device KV events with matching rank. At 8b00c03, and with no router, the same run completes 47 requests.

Please run the device-only KV check for every kv_router run before execution, not only under affinity. Alternatively, skip and count non-device events, as 8b00c03 did, and document that the policy sees device-tier overlap only.

# lifecycle rows. Their count depends on simulated completion times, so
# neither the finite corpus nor duration alone bounds the full profile.

NB3: or stack == "dynamo" changes the plan for --stack dynamo runs that configure no router. With 4 workers requested on the same host, main plans weka-two-plays.jsonl with agentic_snapshot as trace-json-metadata-v1 (537 MB): admitted unsupervised, and parallelism 4 under supervision. At this head it becomes dynamo-unqualified-v1: refused unsupervised, and parallelism 1 under supervision. Snapshot plus warmup, agentic-mooncake.jsonl and dynamo-agentic.jsonl change the same way. build_plan already relabels engine-stack routing through native_router, so this restores main's behavior:

If the change is intended for Dynamo's own replay, please document it in docs/reference/local-resources.md and in the PR description. This line came in with 60fd1bb. bd5d1a9 removed it and e524d48 put it back. My earlier reviews missed it.
