Scope and current consumer — 2026-09-23

This API proposal is independent and is not required for AISimulate delivery; auto-merge remains disabled. The existing Dynamo selector and SessionAffinity APIs already support the simulation adapter. The user and AISimulate architecture review require preserving the existing package boundary.

AISimulate #306 now retains only neutral conversation lineage/replay lifecycle hooks and original core/engine packaging. The separate crates/python binding, aisimulate/dynamo.py, bundled Dynamo dependencies and policy entry points are deleted. Dynamo #15240 extends Dynamo’s existing runner, router provider and native replay composition, reusing DefaultWorkerSelector, PolicyQueue, SessionAffinity and the existing physical cache-event/indexer bridge. It introduces no Python package or alternative routing algorithm.

The existing-adapter consumer has passed 223 native and 38 real CLI tests. Clean matching source builds (Dynamo 4425353, AISimulate 60fd1bb7) also pass the documented 3600/600-second YAML with actual worker/DP and physical-cache checks. Current remote CI and required human review remain tracked in #15240 and #306; matching packages are not published. Earlier bundled/paired AISim policy-wheel results are historical and do not qualify this replacement. The consumer’s actual immutable source pin is one-way toward AISimulate’s neutral hooks; this PR retains published AISimulate 0.12.0 and has no dependency on either consumer PR.

This PR’s code remains 6248259 with the independent API/CI evidence below. It has not merged. Maintainers can evaluate or retire its convenience interfaces separately; CODEOWNER approval and review resolution remain merge gates if pursued.

Summary

Allow an external simulation host to compose Dynamo's native KV worker selection with session or sibling-group affinity. The host advances virtual time and commits a worker/DP binding only after dispatch is accepted.

  • Add a public eligibility helper shared with the live scheduler. An external caller of the existing selector can now apply the same eligible affinity constraint as the production queue, including worker availability, allowlists and DP rank validation. Affinity eligibility uses the final availability set, independent of builder order, and reactivates when availability is restored. Custom policies retain advisory affinity semantics.
  • Add a manual-clock constructor to the native SessionAffinity table, preserving native initialization, wait, commit, invalidation, lease and idle-expiry behavior. Active leases survive virtual TTL; release starts idle expiry at virtual time. Manual construction and advancement reject values whose TTL deadline would overflow, before mutating bindings or time. The normal runtime-clock constructor is unchanged.
  • Publish the sibling-group key helper, add external-crate contract tests, and document the public embedding contract and installation/build requirements.
  • Fix the benchmark OnceLock<Instant> inference error that blocked root Rust tests and Clippy.

This PR targets main directly. Rust, Python, containers and standalone lockfiles all retain published AISimulate 0.12.0, with the existing strict consistency checks. It has no dependency on AISimulate #306 or the unmerged Dynamo #14521. The public dynamo-kv-router crate has no AISimulate dependency.

Validation

  • Public native API contracts: 11 passed. KV-router library: 1274 passed, 2 existing ignored. The added real-selector regression reproduces NoEndpoints before the availability-order fix and passes afterward; one redundant private lifecycle test was removed while retaining the public lifecycle contract. Executable Rust examples: 2 passed.
  • An external consumer outside every workspace successfully runs the documented lifecycle with cargo run --locked, using the published immutable candidate Git revision 62482597db839fcd657f2e39596c4071572a3408. The same external Git-linked project passes all 11 public API tests, including availability-order, explicit-pin consistency and manual-clock overflow coverage, with Rust/Cargo 1.96.1. Its lockfile and dependency tree contain Dynamo routing/hashing/tokens/truthy at that revision, with no AISimulate, Dynamo runtime, LLM or Mocker dependency and no path/patch override. This qualifies the current native candidate installation and public contracts; it does not establish a merged release or AISimulate CLI availability.
  • Rebuilt real Python native bindings against published AISimulate 0.12.0: all 26 previously failing runtime/planner/profiler/router functional cases plus 7 strict dependency checks pass together, 33/33 with no skips. Mocker library: 217/217 passed.
  • Root all-target Clippy and router all-target Clippy pass with warnings denied. The exact failed dc_ckf_relay benchmark Clippy and test compilation pass. Four Cargo workspaces pass locked metadata checks; all three AISimulate lock entries resolve the same crates.io 0.12.0 release.
  • Rust formatting, relevant pre-commit hooks, strict ownership coverage and generated ownership-file checks pass. Docs lint and Fern configuration checks pass. Fern broken-link checking reports an existing link in the unchanged deepseek-v4-pro-0813.mdx recipe; it does not report a new-page failure (the tool exits 0 despite that finding).
  • Current head 62482597db839fcd657f2e39596c4071572a3408 fixes the availability-order, redundant-test/comment and manual-clock overflow findings. Its Pre Merge is fully successful, including all 11 public API contracts, root Rust tests/doc tests, feature-gated benchmark compilation and all Clippy jobs. All six formerly failing container CPU jobs now pass: Planner amd64/arm64, Runtime parallel amd64/arm64, and Runtime sequential amd64/arm64. Strict dependency consistency checks pass with published AISimulate 0.12.0. The Full PR has now passed, including the previously pending backend jobs. The preceding e1fb03fa and c656bc34 CI results are historical. Required CI, CODEOWNERS review and resolved review threads remain separate merge gates. Auto-merge was disabled after the existing-API audit above.

Review note: the suggestion to bypass eligible affinity whenever an explicit pin exists was not adopted. The pre-PR main queue already applies both constraints, and SessionAffinity validates that explicit worker/DP targets agree with an existing binding. The public test now checks a disallowed pin, a conflicting valid pin/affinity pair (rejected), and a matching pair (accepted). Production hosts already avoid attaching advisory affinity to an explicit pin. Changing that precedence is outside this API extraction. The paired availability-first and affinity-first control rows are intentionally retained together to show the public builder-order invariant; the first also overlaps the broader ineligibility matrix. These review discussions remain open for maintainer judgment.

The native contract tests supply explicit cache-overlap inputs and assert actual selector results, worker/DP bindings, independent prefill/decode tables, virtual TTL, wait/abort/drop, invalidation, eligibility and custom-policy behavior. They qualify the public native policy contract; actual engine cache reuse and AISimulate CLI integration require downstream acceptance.

Delivery and installation boundary

Use the existing integration in Dynamo #15240, paired with AISimulate #306, for the YAML → CLI → existing Dynamo adapter → native policy → simulation/report flow. The AISimulate stack is main ← #307 ← #306; this API PR does not precede it. No local override is used. Matching source installation, merged source and published package availability remain separate states.

Start review of this independent proposal with lib/kv-router/simulation-policy.md, scheduling/filter.rs, services/selection/affinity.rs, and tests/simulation_policy_api.rs.

Preserve the explicit request pin.

When request.pinned_worker is W1 and the eligible affinity target is W2, this call adds a conflicting W2 constraint. The selector then rejects W1 during pinned-worker validation. Apply the affinity target only when no explicit pin exists.

Previously reported defects still present:

  • Original discussion: The scheduling path still applies with_eligible_affinity_target even when request.pinned_worker is set, so a request pinned to one worker and carrying a conflicting affinity target can have the pin rejected by the added affinity constraint instead of preserving the explicit request pin.
  • Original discussion: Verified still present: the live queue applies an eligible affinity target even when request.pinned_worker specifies a different worker. That turns a supported explicit pin into PinnedWorkerNotAllowed instead of preserving the caller's pin. Skip affinity narrowing when pinned_worker is set.

The availability first row is redundant with the retained ineligible_affinity_falls_back_without_relaxing_host_constraints availability arm: both build eligibility by applying availability before with_eligible_affinity_target for the same unavailable bound worker and only verify fallback to worker 8. The order-sensitive regression remains covered by this test's affinity first row, while the baseline availability behavior remains protected by the earlier test.

🤖 AI Fix

Remove the availability first row from affinity_fallback_uses_final_availability_regardless_of_builder_order.
