Why and what changed

Native routing compositions need to distinguish tentative placement from engine acceptance, advance their own waiters on replay time, and receive conversation ancestry that survives snapshots. Downstream callers also need the canonical AISimulate input preparation and report finalization rather than a second executor.

This prerequisite extracts the neutral contracts from #306:

  • Default no-op dispatch commit/abort and virtual-clock hooks, with aggregated/P-D rollback and invalid-wakeup handling.
  • Optional, versioned conversation lineage derived before snapshot filtering. Existing request parent/root semantics stay unchanged.
  • A Rust execute_replay_with_composition entry (with the existing python feature), sharing preparation/finalization with the built-in runner and preserving typed lifecycle evidence, optional telemetry, and composition-owned scaling.

No Dynamo dependency, Python policy bridge, provider loader, or additional distribution is introduced. This PR supplies interfaces; it does not enable or claim acceptance of conversation-aware routing.

Review map

  • Risk level: medium
  • Start with crates/core/src/replay/core/mod.rs, then dispatch/time settlement in agg.rs and disagg.rs; the shared execution entry is in crates/core/src/python.rs.
  • Public or serialized contract changed: default trait methods, a crate-root Rust execution entry/result, and optional AgenticRuntimeIdentity.lineage. Old JSON round-trips unchanged; Rust struct literals must initialize the new field. Native integrations must compile against a compatible core version; this is not a dynamic binary ABI.
  • Compatibility or rollback concern: failed dispatch commit attempts engine rollback and policy abort, preserves cleanup errors, and prohibits continued execution. Default policies retain their behavior. Existing AgentX golden hashes are preserved after excluding only the additive lineage field, whose values are independently asserted.

Evidence

  • Default Rust tests: cargo test -p aisimulate-core --lib --test agentx_qualification --test runtime_contract — 2,300 + 24 + 21 passed; one existing ignored test.
  • Embedded Rust tests: cargo test -p aisimulate-core --features embed-python --lib --test runtime_contract --test agentx_qualification, with the current wheel on PYTHONPATH and AIC_REQUIRE_EMBEDDED_ROUND_TRIP=1 — 2,385 + 24 + 23 passed; one existing ignored test.
  • Built and installed the current AISimulate wheel locally with maturin build --profile dev.
  • cargo fmt --all -- --check, git diff --check, source copyright, packaged legal files, documentation destinations, and strict CODEOWNERS/generated-artifact checks passed.
  • Fast CI: pending hosted run.
  • Full CI: pending hosted run.
  • CodeRabbit reviewed commit: pending hosted review.
  • Codex reviewed commit: 5cba61d31d2dda18aefb3d4f7c5013182df80f2c; independent reviews cover dispatch/time behavior, lineage/schema, and the public execution boundary; no P0/P1/P2 findings.
  • Negative or boundary cases: failed commit/abort cleanup, rejected dispatch, stale/nonfinite/stalled wakeups, coincident engine deadlines, tokenization, both backends and aggregated/P-D paths, historical ancestry, ambiguous parents, and recycled play namespaces.
  • Expected-value derivation: tokenization adds 5 ms + 0.5 ms × 4 input tokens = 7 ms per isolated request; lineage expectations come from authored fixture relationships. These are functional contracts, not hardware accuracy claims.
  • Before/after output: all 16 existing AgentX report/lifecycle pins remain unchanged apart from independently checked additive lineage metadata.

Modeling or data provenance

N/A: no timing formulas, performance data, or prediction goldens changed.

Review in Change Stack →

📝 Summary

Risk: Medium. Three areas need the most human attention:

  1. Dispatch lifecycle and rollback. Review acceptance, commit, abort, engine rollback, and poisoned-runtime behavior in aggregated and disaggregated replay.
  2. Replay-time wakeups. Check ordering around engine deadlines, same-time wakeups, and rejection of stale or invalid wakeups.
  3. Public compatibility contracts. Check lineage derivation and snapshot namespacing, legacy JSON round-trips, and the feature-gated Rust composition API.

Changes and contracts

The change adds default PlacementPolicy hooks for dispatch commit and abort, replay-clock advancement, and policy wakeups. Replay runtimes use these hooks to manage placement lifecycle and scheduled policy work. Dispatch failures trigger cleanup and prevent reuse of the affected runtime.

AgenticRuntimeIdentity gains optional, versioned conversation lineage. Lineage is derived from spawn relationships and carried into snapshots. Ambiguous ancestry does not produce lineage. Existing request parent/root semantics are reported unchanged; Rust struct literals must initialize the added field.

With the python feature, the crate root exports execute_replay_with_composition and ReplayExecutionResult. The new entry point shares replay preparation and finalization with the built-in runner while accepting a native composition factory and optional telemetry.

Evidence and readiness

The supplied summary reports passing default Rust tests and embedded-Python Rust tests, plus formatting, diff, copyright, packaging, documentation-destination, and strict CODEOWNERS/generated-artifact checks. It also reports that hosted fast and full CI were pending. These are author-reported results; no independent test results were supplied.

The author reports no P0/P1/P2 findings in a Codex review of a specified commit. This is not approval. Current review findings were not supplied, so severity counts are unavailable.

Technical quality: The reported tests cover dispatch failures, wakeup timing, both backends, lineage edge cases, and native composition behavior. The supplied evidence does not establish the result of hosted CI or a current human review.

Merge readiness: Not established. Hosted fast and full CI were pending in the supplied report. No current review findings or final CI status were provided.

This change adds a Rust replay composition entry point, placement-policy lifecycle and wakeup handling, and conversation lineage in agentic runtime identities. It also adds tests and documentation for these changes.

Changes: Native replay composition

Layer / File(s) Summary
Composition entry point and typed result
crates/core/src/lib.rs, crates/core/src/python.rs
The Python-feature-gated API accepts a composition factory and returns a typed result. JSON serialization combines report metadata, per-request records, and optional artifacts.
Topology dispatch and report serialization
crates/core/src/python.rs, crates/core/tests/runtime_contract.rs, docs/adapters/native-composition.md, docs/replay/api/rust.md
Aggregated and disaggregated execution use the supplied dispatch callback. Tests and documentation cover execution inputs, reports, and optional telemetry and capture.

Placement-policy lifecycle and wakeups

Layer / File(s) Summary
Policy hooks and dispatch failure handling
crates/core/src/replay/core/mod.rs, crates/core/src/replay/runtime_utils.rs, crates/core/src/replay/components/engine.rs, crates/core/src/replay/replayer.rs, docs/adapters/native-composition.md
Placement policies gain commit, abort, clock-advance, and wakeup methods. Shared utilities validate wakeups and retain dispatch and cleanup errors. The engine adds dispatch rollback, and the policy boundary forwards callbacks.
Aggregated runtime integration
crates/core/src/replay/agg.rs, crates/core/src/replay/agg_tests.rs
The runtime includes placement wakeups in deadline selection, advances the policy clock during timestamp draining, and handles dispatch commit and rollback. Tests cover wakeup timing and dispatch failures.
Disaggregated runtime integration
crates/core/src/replay/disagg.rs, crates/core/src/replay/disagg_tests.rs
The runtime includes prefill and decode policy wakeups in deadline selection and handles commit, rollback, and abort around engine operations. Tests cover wakeups and failure cleanup.

Agentic conversation lineage

Layer / File(s) Summary
Lineage identity contract
crates/core/src/replay/protocol.rs, crates/core/src/replay/mod.rs, docs/replay/agentic/conversation-lineage.md
The protocol adds a versioned lineage type and an optional identity field. The documentation describes lineage and dispatch-policy contracts.
Lineage derivation and runtime identity mapping
crates/core/src/replay/loadgen/lineage.rs, crates/core/src/replay/loadgen/trace.rs, crates/core/src/replay/loadgen/driver.rs, crates/core/src/replay/loadgen/snapshot.rs, crates/core/src/replay/loadgen/types.rs
Trace construction derives lineage from spawn parents. Runtime identities and snapshots carry lineage, with conversation IDs mapped to play-instance IDs.
Lineage tests and qualification checks
crates/core/src/replay/loadgen/snapshot_tests.rs, crates/core/tests/agentx_qualification.rs
Tests cover lineage across snapshots, play instances, and ambiguous parentage. Qualification checks validate lineage in reports and exclude lineage fields from existing report and per-request hashes.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title "feat(replay): add neutral hooks for native routing compositions" matches the main change. The diff adds default no-op PlacementPolicy hooks (dispatch_committed, dispatch_aborted, advance_clock, next_wakeup_ms), conversation lineage, and the execute_replay_with_composition entry point. The title is specific and states the behavioral change. It does not use vague terms. It omits the lineage and Rust entry point, but those are secondary aspects of the same change.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the repository template. It covers Why and what changed, a Review map with risk level, start-with files, public contract changes, and compatibility concerns, and an Evidence section with commands and results. Tracking links are present. The Modeling or data provenance section is marked N/A with a reason. Fast CI, full CI, and CodeRabbit review are pending. The template also asks for a Codex reviewed commit for medium or high risk. The author lists commit 5cba61d, and the risk level is medium, so that requirement is met. The SPDX header from the template is not present in the description, but that header belongs in source files, not PR descriptions. The description is mostly complete.

Full details: Cross-Layer Contract

Explanation

No stale cross-layer contract was introduced. The new Rust composition entry is crate-root re-exported under the python feature, tested for aggregated and disaggregated payloads, tokenization, determinism, scaling, telemetry, typed evidence, and JSON output in crates/core/tests/runtime_contract.rs:106-200. It is a direct Rust API, not a PyO3 function, so _native.pyi, Python, and CLI bindings do not require a new symbol; the shared Python/CLI path still uses execute_json and the refactored ReplayExecutionResult serializer in crates/core/src/python.rs:2619-2700. The new placement hooks are forwarded through PlacementPolicyBoundary, consumed by both aggregate and disaggregated runtimes, and covered by lifecycle, wakeup, rollback, and poisoning tests. The additive AgenticRuntimeIdentity.lineage field is populated in trace, snapshot, and runtime identities, serialized with legacy-compatible omission, independently asserted in snapshot and AgentX tests, and documented in docs/replay/agentic/conversation-lineage.md and the native composition/API docs. No changed CLI or Python schema consumer requires direct lineage handling because those layers transport and parse replay JSON generically.

Full details: Modeling And Data Evidence

Explanation

The added lineage selection logic has explicit provenance: docs/replay/agentic/conversation-lineage.md:14-25 defines spawn-edge derivation and ambiguity handling. Reproducible evidence exists in snapshot_tests.rs:69-130 and the independent fixture-based oracle in agentx_qualification.rs:639-660. Existing report/lifecycle golden values remain unchanged between base and head, while lineage is checked separately (agentx_qualification.rs:664-745). The tokenization timing check compares a baseline and verifies the stated 5 ms + 0.5 ms × 4 = 7 ms result for both topologies (runtime_contract.rs:108-155). No unexplained model or performance-data refresh or binary-only validation is introduced.

Full details: Compatibility Boundaries

Explanation

Compatibility boundaries remain intact. The reviewed range does not change Cargo or Python packaging manifests. Both product manifests remain version 0.13.0 (python/aisimulate/pyproject.toml:5-6, crates/core/Cargo.toml:4-7). The release guard still requires one aisimulate wheel and one publishable aisimulate-core crate, rejects Dynamo and separate core dependencies, and checks matching versions (scripts/release/build_release_artifacts.py:29-92,155-161). The new Rust entry is explicitly gated by the existing python feature and is documented as a direct Rust API, not as a Python binding (crates/core/src/lib.rs:23-28, docs/adapters/native-composition.md:14-39). Existing PyO3 exports remain unchanged (crates/core/src/python.rs:3165-3241). The lineage field is optional, omitted when absent, and legacy identity JSON round-trips without the field (crates/core/src/replay/protocol.rs:13-49,215-225). Replay spec version remains 1, with no incompatible spec change (crates/core/src/replay/spec.rs:13-63). New placement hooks have synchronized documented no-op defaults (crates/core/src/replay/core/mod.rs:144-175, docs/adapters/native-composition.md:63-78). AISimulate core adds no Dynamo dependency. The linked Dynamo consumer uses the published aisimulate-core dependency with the python feature and does not require a second AISimulate artifact (ai-dynamo/dynamo@c2e854f, Cargo.toml:42-43, lib/bindings/python/Cargo.toml:62).

Full details: Review Evidence

Explanation

The description provides exact local test commands and results, local wheel-build evidence, and separate embedded-runtime evidence. It lists negative and boundary cases covering dispatch cleanup, invalid wakeups, both topologies, tokenization, lineage, and namespace reuse. It separates local tests, synthetic/native-composition checks, parity pins, and hosted CI; Fast CI and Full CI are explicitly marked pending, not reported as passed. The description does not cite an inactive nested workflow as hosted CI evidence.

Linked repositories findings

ai-dynamo/dynamo

Inspected the branch for open PR #16854 (c2e854f).

  • Dynamo pins both Rust and Python AISimulate dependencies to the exact 0.13.0 development release targeted by this change. [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::Cargo.toml:54-55] [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::pyproject.toml:15-18]
  • Dynamo’s replay integration currently constructs Replayer directly with its own ReplayComposition implementations for aggregated and disaggregated paths. It does not reference execute_replay_with_composition or ReplayExecutionResult. [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::lib/mocker/src/replay/offline/entrypoints.rs:11-15] [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::lib/mocker/src/replay/offline/entrypoints.rs:224-249] [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::lib/mocker/src/replay/offline/entrypoints.rs:329-355]
  • The Python integration is registered through DynamoReplayRunnerFactory, rather than the new crate-root execution function. [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::pyproject.toml:121-133]
  • Dynamo enforces that the Python wheel, container requirement, Cargo dependency, and all lockfiles resolve to the same AISimulate version. A mismatched publication or pin would fail its dependency consistency test. [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::tests/dependencies/test_aisimulate_consistency.py:95-133]

ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator

Inspected HEAD f254959.

  • No direct references to the new replay entry point, placement hooks, lineage type, or ReplayExecutionResult were found.
  • The compatibility documentation concerns the older stable aisimulate==0.12.0 migration and legacy CLI/Sweeper APIs, not the new replay contracts. [::ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator::docs/aisimulate_migration.md:8-19] [::ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator::docs/aisimulate_migration.md:48-67]

The duplicate-release defect is not established.

The runtime does call dispatch_aborted before failed handoff cleanup, and cancellation can later call request_terminal. However, the contract assigns them different roles: dispatch_aborted discards tentative state, while request_terminal ends the routed request. The source does not show that both callbacks release the same state or that this sequence rejects a request ID. Clearing the route flag earlier would skip terminal cleanup.

Cache ancestry results across conversations.

conversation_lineage starts a new parent walk for every (play, conversation) key. It does not reuse completed or unresolved walks. Valid acyclic input can contain a chain with thousands of distinct sessions, so this performs quadratic work before replay starts. At 50,000 sessions, the walk performs about 1.25 billion parent-link steps. Cache resolved ancestry states and add a long-chain scaling test.

Review comment at @crates/core/src/replay/loadgen/lineage.rs at line 33:
Update conversation_lineage to reuse cached ancestry results across (play,
conversation) keys, including completed walks, so shared or overlapping parent
chains are not traversed repeatedly. Add a long-chain scaling test that verifies
ancestry processing avoids quadratic repeated parent-link walks.
