fix: query external profiles through the common forward-pass API - #599
Let external execution profiles use best_available(config) and the existing scalar/detailed forward-pass APIs for prefill, decode, and mixed steps. Equivalent version-2 graphs, measurements, configuration, and metrics produce identical built-in and external estimates.
Load both graphs for aggregated workers: ops contains prefill operations and generation_ops contains decode operations. Reuse the existing mixed-step calculation without an additional composition setting.
Reject mixed queries when measured scopes lack separate top-level phase attention or hide attention inside overlap groups. Apply the same graph check to raw engine graphs and external profiles; opaque whole-phase graphs remain usable for pure-phase queries.
Document MeasuredCompositeOp as one measured scope that may contain multiple operations; its name does not imply confidentiality.
Follow the abstraction boundary requested in Dynamo #17228. Planner continues using the common estimator interface.
Constrain the development test dependency to pytest<9.2. The new 9.2 patch-cleanup behavior deletes forwarded compatibility attributes; this independently reproduced failure also affects current main. Document the bound and refresh the lockfile.
Compatibility
Preserve version-1 direct-phase behavior, including homogeneous totals and the decode past KV / batch + 1 coordinate. Existing bytes and SHA pins keep their meaning.
Version 2 explicitly selects the common API contract and supports aggregated profiles. Migration requires requalifying query coordinates and cells, updating schema_version, and regenerating profile/artifact hashes; loading never rewrites pinned data.
For predict_decode_latency_total(2, 8), v1 queries [2, 5, 0] and v2 queries [2, 4, 0]. The existing static one-step API still queries [2, 5, 0] for input length 4 in both versions. No ordinary prediction formulas change.
Retain phase checks, identity validation, immutable input hashes, resident weights, and each operation's lookup behavior. A measured scope still requires exact cells at the calculated runtime coordinate.
Version 2 retains ordinary integer-mean handling for nonuniform totals. Adding a measured-profile-only rejection would change the agreed built-in/external query behavior; existing equivalence tests cover these totals.
Validation
Fast CI and Full CI passed on 263b6c6b1791ab7e883b180b375eb8f307918426, including all eight unit-test shards using pytest 9.1.1.
New regression tests reproduce both review findings on the prior head: v1 decode changes an existing pinned answer, and opaque mixed graphs silently omit decode costs. Tests cover v1 reloads, explicit migration, missing cells, scalar/detailed failures, and raw/static mixed queries.
Real native equivalence tests compare bundled tables, identical local tables, and version-2 profiles for prefill, decode, and mixed steps, including prefixes and nonuniform totals. No mocked compilation or predictions in these equivalence tests.
Native code validated at 6ca17e05ae972ac824a6adf0cb9ae6d963b93cdf after integrating current main. Full Rust library suite: 2,358 passed, one existing ignored test. Subsequent commits only constrain the test dependency and add documentation/snapshot assertions; runtime code is unchanged. Current head: 263b6c6b1791ab7e883b180b375eb8f307918426.
Native Python API, dataset preparation, model snapshots for both profile versions, and both frozen parity suites: 543 passed. Prediction goldens are unchanged.
Dynamo source integration: 220 Planner tests passed against this native extension, including built-in/external equivalence for prefill, decode, mixed steps, and capacity estimates. The downstream PR uses version-2 fixtures.
Both schema-sensitive packed-snapshot restore cases passed at the current head.
403 additional compatibility, memory, and FPM-profile tests passed with pytest 9.1.1. A focused patch/restore probe fails with 9.2.0 and passes with 9.1.1; lockfile validation passed.
Rust formatting, Python Ruff, documentation destinations, and whitespace checks passed.
Cost and scope
Mixed-graph validation scans the prepared operation graphs once at construction and stores one boolean. Query-time checks are constant work; there is no new file loading, graph copy, or cache. This is a source-level cost assessment, not a measured speedup.
Planner workload policies, telemetry, EngineSpec serialization, and operation serialization are unchanged. The execution-profile JSON explicitly distinguishes v1 compatibility from the v2 common API contract.
Dynamo still needs a published matching Python/Rust release containing this change. Source integration checks do not replace that release validation.
It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.
Risk: Medium. Three areas need human attention: schema-version and aggregated-profile validation; mixed-step composition when measured graphs contain attention; and decode-coordinate compatibility across query APIs.
Changed behavior and public contracts
Schema-v2 external profiles support the common forward-pass APIs for prefill, decode, and mixed queries. Aggregated profiles use ops for prefill and require generation_ops for decode. Mixed queries require top-level attention operations for both phases. Shared non-attention work uses the combined token count, while each phase’s attention uses its own shape. Exact measured cells remain required.
Schema-v1 profiles retain their direct-phase restrictions and decode coordinates. Schema-v2 common decode queries use mean reported KV length. Direct trajectory and static one-step queries retain their existing coordinates. The supplied change summaries report no changes to exported or public declarations.
Evidence
The source search supports the schema-version checks, aggregated-profile requirements, mixed-query validation, and API coverage described above. The tests include parity cases for built-in, local, external, and restored profiles. The objectives report 2,288 Rust library tests, 520 Python tests, and 220 Dynamo Planner tests passing, plus formatting, Ruff, documentation-destination, and whitespace checks. These are author-reported results; no test logs were supplied. The requested diff produced no output, so it did not provide a source diff for independent confirmation. The documentation path included in the search was not found at that location.
Technical quality and merge readiness
The supplied evidence describes broad regression coverage, but does not independently confirm test execution. Current review findings and bot approval status are unavailable. Validation against a published matching Python/Rust release is still needed, as reported in the objectives. Merge readiness is therefore unconfirmed.
Execution profiles now support schema-v2 aggregated prefill and decode graphs. The runtime uses qualified profile telemetry for common forward-pass estimates and supports mixed estimates when measured scopes expose separate phase-attention operations. Tests cover schema versions, phase queries, trajectories, and saved configurations.

Summary
Define and validate profile graphs crates/core/src/perfmodel/execution_profile.rs, crates/core/src/perfmodel/operators/measured_composite.rs, docs/perf-model/methods/op-level.md
Aggregated profiles require separate prefill and generation graphs. Profile application validates operations against phase baselines. Documentation describes schema versions, graph requirements, and measured-shape behavior.
Estimate phase-specific and mixed work crates/core/src/perfmodel/engine/runtime.rs
The runtime checks phase qualification for scheduled work and supports schema-v2 profile telemetry through common forward-pass estimates. Aggregated profiles can compose mixed work when measured scopes expose separate top-level attention operations. Runtime tests cover these paths and profile-specific query behavior.

Full details: Compatibility Boundaries
Explanation
No compatibility-boundary failure is introduced. The PR keeps the Python and Rust public bindings unchanged: the PyO3 methods, _native.pyi, and Python wrapper files are unchanged. The Rust profile reader now accepts schema versions 1 and 2, requires generation_ops only for aggregated version-2 profiles, and preserves version-1 behavior; the documentation matches these rules at docs/perf-model/methods/op-level.md:57-65,139-156. Python dataset preparation remains generic and the added test covers aggregated profile preparation and reload. The package and artifact contract is unchanged: Cargo.toml, crates/core/Cargo.toml, python/aisimulate/pyproject.toml, and the maturin one-extension configuration are unchanged; both Python and crate versions remain 0.13.0. The downstream Dynamo consumer uses the documented schema-2 aggregated shape and pins aisimulate-core as a separate crate (Dynamo 84b0d27a8bda0b20c8f3ca0275e6d4a2c3b8e1e0, components/src/dynamo/planner/tests/integration/test_ais_dataset_profiles.py:40-129, Cargo.toml:54-55). No new Dynamo dependency or Dynamo-only runtime coupling appears in the changed files.
Full details: Review Evidence
Explanation
The PR description names the validation areas and results: 2,288 Rust tests, 520 native Python/parity tests, 220 Dynamo Planner tests, plus formatting and lint checks. It includes boundary and negative validation for v1/v2 coordinates, missing cells, opaque mixed scopes, invalid profiles, and single-phase queries. It distinguishes native/local tests, frozen parity suites, non-mocked equivalence tests, source integration, and the still-required published release. It does not claim results from inactive nested workflows as hosted CI evidence.
Full details: Cross-Layer Contract
Explanation
A stale public documentation contract remains. The PR changes schema-v2 execution-profile totals to the common forward-pass path: runtime.rs:1379-1398 uses common metrics for v2, while runtime.rs:1320-1326 limits homogeneous-total rejection to v1. The changed tests also cover ragged v2 totals and the separate v1 decode coordinate. However, docs/perf-model/methods/whole-forward.md:196-197 still says execution profiles reject non-divisible totals and broadly says total decode queries preserve the native FPM coordinate. The PR does not change this document, so the whole-forward documentation conflicts with the Rust behavior and the updated op-level contract.
Resolution
Update docs/perf-model/methods/whole-forward.md lines 196-197. Qualify homogeneous-total and decode-coordinate statements by query source and profile version. State that schema-v1 external profiles retain homogeneous totals and the legacy decode coordinate, while schema-v2 profiles use the common API integer-mean coordinates. Preserve the direct-FPM total-coordinate description where it applies. Review nearby whole-forward table wording for the same distinction and add or update documentation checks if required.
Full details: Modeling And Data Evidence
Explanation
The PR changes model selection and query coordinates in runtime.rs (legacy_profile, schema-v2 dispatch, mixed-operation checks, and decode-total routing at lines 397-447, 1379-1398, and 2951-2974). The new output checks use hand-authored synthetic cells and arithmetic, such as 2.0 * 3, 11 + 3 + 5, and 5 + 2 + 7 in test_external_execution_profile.py:353-390, 414-429, 450-480 and test_dataset_contracts.py:195-249. The built-in parity test takes builtin.estimate_forward_pass_time_ms() as its expected value at test_external_execution_profile.py:565, 624-632; it does not record base/head outputs or use an independent predictive oracle. The changed-file inventory has no committed measurement, golden, or machine-readable evidence artifact. The documentation also states that the structural check does not validate measurements against silicon (docs/perf-model/methods/op-level.md:694). Therefore the PR does not supply the required provenance and reproducible before/after evidence.
Resolution
Add committed machine-readable evidence for representative prefill, decode, and aggregated profiles. Record system, backend, version, source data, and queried shapes. Record reproducible base and head outputs, then compare them with an independent oracle or held-out measurements. Add anomaly checks for finite positive latencies, missing or duplicate shapes, outliers, and unexpected deltas. Explain the output diff and cover mixed-step, trajectory, and total-query paths.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the template's main sections: Summary, Compatibility, Validation, and Cost and scope. It explains the behavior change, the v1/v2 compatibility contract, and the test evidence, including commit hashes and a CI run link. Gaps against the template: there is no 'Review map' section (no risk level, no riskiest files, no start-with pointer, no public or serialized contract statement, no rollback concern), the 'Evidence' fields are not in the template's format (no 'Codex reviewed commit' despite a high-effort change, no 'CodeRabbit reviewed commit', no explicit expected-value derivation for the exact numerical assertions such as 57.0 ms or [2, 5, 0] vs [2, 4, 0]), there is no 'Modeling or data provenance' section (the change involves measured performance data and profile hashes), and the 'Tracking' section with Closes/Related links is missing, though the Dynamo #17228 and PR references partly cover related work. The SPDX header is absent from the template's first lines.
Resolution
Add a 'Review map' section with: risk level (high, given the schema-v1/v2 contract split and the decode coordinate change); start-with files (crates/core/src/perfmodel/engine/runtime.rs, crates/core/src/perfmodel/execution_profile.rs, and the Python execution-profile tests); a statement that the public or serialized contract changed (execution-profile schema_version 2 and the aggregated phase); and a compatibility or rollback concern (reloads of v1 profiles, and the requirement to regenerate hashes for migrated profiles). Add 'Codex reviewed commit' because the template requires it for medium or high risk. Add the CodeRabbit reviewed commit, or state that it is not applicable. Add the expected-value derivation for the exact numerical assertions, for example how 57.0 ms and the [2, 5, 0] and [2, 4, 0] coordinates are obtained. Add a 'Modeling or data provenance' section that states the source of the measured profile data, its units, whether it is measured or estimated, and the coverage and anomaly checks, or write N/A with a reason. Complete the 'Tracking' section with closing keywords for completed issues and plain links for related work, including Dynamo #17228. Address the template's SPDX header if the repository requires it for new or edited PR descriptions.

Planner groups live metrics by worker and sends all attention-DP rank metrics together; the engine wrapper requires exactly the configured rank count. An execution-profile model restricted to one rank would therefore be unavailable for profiles configured with attention_dp > 1. [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::components/src/dynamo/planner/core/perf_model/ais_adapter.py:463-500] [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::components/src/dynamo/planner/core/perf_model/engine_query.py:589-620]
Dynamo’s documented role schema exposes attention_dp, while local execution-profile manifests provide the complete canonical configuration and are not documented as single-rank-only. The profile integration fixture exercises only a single-rank profile, so multi-rank profile coverage appears absent. [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::docs/fern/pages/reference/components/planner-configuration.mdx:136-157] [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::components/src/dynamo/planner/tests/integration/test_ais_dataset_profiles.py:125-170]
The downstream branch pins the AISimulate runtime to 0.13.0.dev202610240000000082; profile API changes need to remain synchronized with this wheel and the matching Rust crate. [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::pyproject.toml:15-18]
ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator
Frozen compatibility reference; this is not a runtime dependency.
The established forward-pass contract is one FPM per attention-DP rank, with best_available retaining native-estimator fallback behavior. [::ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator::aic-core/API.md:156-167] [::ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator::aic-core/rust/aiconfigurator-core/src/fpm/model.rs:251-269]
Empty scheduled work returns 0.0; queued fields and wall_time are ignored for prediction. This matches Dynamo’s handling of None as unavailable and its finite-value validation, so the PR should preserve those result semantics. The external-profile query adaptation now lives behind the common AISimulate perf-model interface, addressing the requested ownership boundary. Approved with the two inline findings on v1 decode-coordinate compatibility and opaque mixed-graph admission recorded for follow-up.
Validation: independently rebuilt the native extension at this head; 127 focused profile/dataset tests and 74 Dynamo Planner tests passed. The inline findings were reproduced with additional native probes, including an exact-base comparison for the decode-coordinate change. Broader FPM/queue shape modeling remains a separate follow-up.
