Closes #152. Closes #101. Closes #100. Closes #99. Closes #98.

  • wally update -c checks for a new version and asks before installing, and a one-line notice shows when a newer release is out. Works on Windows too. --nightly is removed.
  • wally uninstall keeps downloaded models unless you say yes, and removes itself on Windows.
  • Claude Code shows the model's thinking and reports cache reads. OpenCode, OpenClaw and Prime Agent get the cache-read price.
  • wally models list --cloud lists your cloud models, --all adds them to the local catalog, and --local shows the catalog alone.
  • docs/ENGINES.md matches the commands this release ships.

Tested manually on macOS and Windows ARM64, against prod for the cloud parts.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Added update checks, automatic update notices, and a version-only check mode for installers.
    • Added --local and --cloud model listings; --all now combines local catalog and cloud models.
    • Added --delete-models to uninstall; downloaded models are kept by default.
    • Reasoning content is now available as thinking blocks, and cached-token usage and pricing are reflected in supported integrations.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Improved in-place updates and cleanup of replaced installation files.
    • Windows uninstall can now remove the installation automatically.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The installers add version-only checks and replacement handling. Wally adds update checks and notices, expands model listing and uninstall options, and changes reasoning and cached-token translation and pricing.

Changes

Release updates and notices

Layer / File(s) Summary
Installer version checks and replacement
install.sh, install.ps1
Both installers can resolve and print a version without installing. The PowerShell installer replaces existing files in place and emits the PATH warning only when it adds the install directory.
Update command and release checks
src/commands/cmd_update.rs, tests/golden/expected/*update*, tests/golden/README.md
wally update replaces --nightly with --check-for-updates. The check prompts before installing a newer release. The command adds version lookup, comparison, installer invocation, and caching.
Cached notice dispatch
src/app.rs, src/commands/cmd_update.rs, src/commands/mod.rs
Selected commands and help paths display cached update notices. Wally skips notices in JSON, quiet, CI, and non-interactive modes. Startup sweeps replaced files.

Model discovery

Layer / File(s) Summary
Model listing scopes and output
src/commands/cmd_list.rs, README.md, docs/MODELS.md, tests/golden/*
models list supports downloaded models by default, local catalog models with --local, account cloud models with --cloud, and both with --all. Cloud rows appear in table and JSON output. Help and output fixtures reflect the new scopes.

Uninstall and retained models

Layer / File(s) Summary
Uninstall selection and platform cleanup
src/commands/cmd_maintenance.rs, src/app.rs, tests/golden/expected/*uninstall*
Downloaded models are retained by default. --delete-models includes them in removal; interactive runs ask about models separately. Windows uninstall schedules removal of the verified installation directory after Wally exits.

Reasoning and cached-token accounting

Layer / File(s) Summary
Reasoning blocks and cache usage
src/anthropic/translate.rs, tests/test_wally_unit/shim.rs, tests/cpp_case_exceptions.txt
Anthropic responses translate nonempty reasoning into thinking blocks. Streaming tracks block order and closure. Cached-token usage is separated from input tokens when present.
Cached-input price propagation
src/account/console.rs, src/harness/catalog_models.rs, src/harness/agents.rs, src/harness/opencode.rs, tests/test_wally_harness.rs, tests/test_wally_opencode.rs, docs/EDITORS.md
Catalog data carries cached-input prices. OpenCode, OpenClaw, and Prime Agent use those prices for cache-read cost settings.

CLI documentation updates

Layer / File(s) Summary
Engine and editor documentation
docs/ENGINES.md, docs/EDITORS.md
Engine examples and availability descriptions are updated. Editor documentation describes reasoning and cached-token accounting.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 3d4cf

Fix cleanup ownership and model-retention protection before merging: uninstall can delete models it promises to keep, and Windows startup can remove unrelated backups. Cloud listings also mishandle refresh and authorization failures or silently omit cloud results from JSON. Command guidance needs corresponding corrections.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 3d4cf

Routine interactive commands now execute remotely supplied code to check for releases, extending trust beyond an explicit update. Cloud-list fallback can misidentify the current account’s models, and Windows replacement has uncoordinated cleanup and recovery paths.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · observed: Automatic release notices execute a mutable remote installer with the invoking user’s authority. This extends the existing explicit-update trust boundary to routine eligible commands. Compromise of the installer source would therefore reach users who have not requested installation. Version parsing happens after execution, and archive checksums do not authenticate the executing installer.
  • Low · architecture · observed: The new cloud-list fallback presents cached model identifiers without checking their account or console provenance. Login can replace credentials while a failed cache refresh leaves prior identifiers intact; a later request failure can then present them as cloud models, without a stale-source distinction in JSON. The cache ownership limitation predates this PR, but this consumer introduces an additional account-facing output contract that relies on it. No remote authorization bypass or confirmed sensitive-data disclosure is established.
  • Medium · reliability · inferred: The new file-by-file Windows replacement does not coordinate retired-file ownership with startup cleanup. Rollback depends on in-memory lists and silently ignores restoration failures, while another invocation can delete available .old files. Interruption or overlapping invocations can consequently lose rollback material or leave an incomplete executable-and-library set, weakening update recovery.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — Compromise of the selected installer source could execute code with each eligible invoking user’s permissions during background checks, reaching that user’s accessible files and credentials. This is conditional supply-chain exposure, not demonstrated compromise or privilege elevation. Cache misattribution is bounded to consumers sharing the local profile.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — The release-check attack path is installer-source control followed by an eligible command with stale notice state, downloaded script execution, and user-authority effects. The cache path is prior-account cache population, credential replacement with unsuccessful cache refresh, then a failed cloud-list request. The latter establishes identity misattribution, not permission to invoke another account’s models.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Inspected cloud requests validate token safety and console origin before bearer authentication. Update URLs and helper paths are passed as arguments or environment values rather than interpolated into command source. Notices are disabled for JSON, quiet, CI, and noninteractive execution. These controls constrain credential routing and command injection, but do not restrict the authority of downloaded installer code.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Candidate validation reduces replacement risk, but rollback and retired-file cleanup need shared lifecycle ownership to preserve a recoverable executable set under interruption and overlapping invocations. The inspected implementation does not establish that coordination.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Use a data-only release metadata lookup for automatic notices, keeping installer execution behind an explicit update action.
  • proposed — Bind cached model identifiers to the account and console, distinguish authorization denial from transport unavailability, and expose cached provenance in machine-readable output. Coordinate Windows replacement, rollback, and cleanup through an exclusive transaction lifecycle with recoverable state.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #152 is not fully met. On POSIX, run_update() passes --version=<compiled WALLY_VERSION>, so the installer does not resolve the latest release. run_check_for_updates() checks only stdin_is_tty(); it does not require a stderr TTY or suppress checks for CI, JSON, or quiet mode. Issue #101 adds model retention, --delete-models, and deferred Windows removal, but it does not provide the required dry-run mode or protection for models used by another install. The change summary does not establish the required cleanup tests or separate remote-session and local-deletion documentation. Issue #100 updates command and model documentation, but does not establish fixture-catalog validation, rejected-ID removal, installer login behavior, harness support, or the required platform capability table. Issue #99 adds reasoning and cached-token translation, but the reported tests do not establish coverage for all required streaming and nonstreaming cases, including absent, fragmented, and zero-value fields. Issue #98 reduces cloud responses to model IDs. Cloud rows therefore omit context and price provenance, and the implementation does not distinguish unreachable, unauthorized, and empty results or verify environment/profile selection.

Resolution

For #152, let the normal update path resolve the latest release and gate check-only behavior on both TTY streams, CI, JSON, and quiet mode. For #101, add an explicit dry-run and ownership-aware model cleanup, then add coverage for prior downloads, symlinks, platform removal, interrupted cleanup, and remote-versus-local documentation. For #100, validate documented commands and IDs against the fixture catalog and update installer, harness, and platform documentation. For #99, add the complete streaming and nonstreaming reasoning/cache fixture matrix and document unsupported fields and billing boundaries. For #98, preserve hosted metadata such as context and price provenance, and expose distinct unreachable, unauthorized, and empty outcomes with environment/profile validation.

Limit cleanup to Wally-owned replacement files.

Line 321 runs sweep_replaced_files() before parsing any command. The helper removes every sibling file whose name ends in .old; it does not check that Wally created the file. If an unrelated backup sits beside Wally in a writable install directory, even wally --help deletes it. Restrict the sweep to the exact replacement files created by Wally.

Limit the wally serve claim to server-enabled builds.

Line 68 says that wally serve serves models in every build. src/commands/cmd_serve.rs:211-283 shows that builds with RAC_BUILD_SERVER=OFF instead report that the server is not included and return an error. State that serving requires a server-enabled build.

Suggested wording
-`wally serve` is in every build and serves any model the binary has an engine for.
+`wally serve` serves models supported by the binary when the server is enabled. Builds with `RAC_BUILD_SERVER=OFF` report that the server is not included.

Apply the cache fallback when session refresh cannot reach the console.

If the access token has expired and the network is unavailable, ConsoleSession::open fails during refresh. The ? returns before this function reads cached model IDs. Thus, --cloud fails and --all omits cloud models even when a cached list exists.

Handle unavailable session-refresh errors through the cache fallback. Keep signed-out and rejected-session errors distinct.

The refresh-before-read behavior is defined in src/account/session.rs, Lines 35–149.

Do not treat rejected credentials as an offline lookup.

If refresh rejects the session, or the retried model request returns another 401, session.call returns an authorization error. This branch replaces that error with cached IDs whenever the cache is nonempty. The command then succeeds and reports that the console could not be reached instead of directing the user to sign in.

Preserve the error classification and restrict this fallback to unavailable-service failures.

ConsoleSession::call distinguishes these outcomes in src/account/session.rs, Lines 105–148. The linked Issue #98 requires distinct unauthorized and unreachable results.

Expose cloud lookup failures in combined JSON output.

If a signed-out user runs wally models list --all --json, this branch discards the cloud error. The command returns local rows and exit status 0. The JSON cannot distinguish an unavailable cloud catalog from a successful cloud lookup with no models.

Keep the local results, but include a structured cloud lookup status and error in the JSON response.

The linked Issue #98 requires distinct unreachable, unauthorized, and empty results.

Protect kept models from recursive config removal.

When remove_models is false and the config path contains the models path, report_removal recursively deletes the config path and the kept models. The command then reports that it kept the models.

Canonicalize both paths and check models.starts_with(config) before removing the config target. Skip that target, or remove only config entries that do not contain the models directory.

Update the removal flow in `cmd_maintenance` to protect kept models when
`remove_models` is false: canonicalize the models and config paths, and skip
removing any config target that contains the models directory, or remove only
config entries that do not contain it.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Change the uninstall description to match the new default.

The description for the uninstall subcommand on Line 621 still says "Remove wally, its models and its config". With this change, models are kept unless --delete-models is passed or the person agrees at the prompt. The first line of wally uninstall --help and the new --delete-models line now contradict each other. Reword the description, for example "Remove wally and its config (models optional)". Then regenerate the four uninstall golden files.

Proposed fix
-    let cmd = app.add_subcommand("uninstall", "Remove wally, its models and its config");
+ let cmd = app.add_subcommand(
+ "uninstall",
+ "Remove wally and its config (downloaded models are kept unless asked)",
+    );

Review comment at @src/commands/cmd_maintenance.rs around lines 623 - 626:
Update the uninstall subcommand description in the command setup near the
`--delete-models` flag to clarify that downloaded models are kept by default and
removed only when requested. Regenerate the four uninstall help golden files to
match the revised description.

Superseded: update notice, uninstall-keeps-models, cloud models list, and thinking/cache all merged into #168 (cherry-picked), plus the --home precedence fix from #164. Closing this as redundant — review continues on #168.
