Closes #101. Closes #100.

wally uninstall now asks about downloaded models separately and keeps them unless you say yes. With --yes, models are only deleted with --delete-models. On Windows it now removes its own install folder and PATH entry after it exits, instead of asking you to delete it by hand.

docs/ENGINES.md now uses the commands this release ships (wally models pull, wally run) and drops the speech, image and serve claims that no longer hold.

Tested manually on macOS and Windows ARM64.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • wally uninstall now offers a --delete-models option. Downloaded models are kept by default, with interactive users prompted separately about removing them.
    • On Windows, uninstall now removes recognized Wally installations automatically; removal failures are reported.
  • Documentation
    • Updated command guidance for running models and pulling models.
    • Clarified that wally serve is available in every build for models supported by that build’s engines.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The uninstall command adds an option to delete downloaded models, which are kept by default, and schedules recognized Windows install-directory removal after Wally exits. The engine documentation updates command examples and platform descriptions.

run_uninstall accepts a model-deletion option. The command registers --delete-models, the shortcut passes its default value, and golden outputs list the option.

Uninstall availability checks include model directories. Models are listed for deletion only when selected; otherwise interactive runs prompt separately, and --yes keeps them. Recognized Windows install directories are retained for deferred removal.
Removal reporting and Windows cleanup

Removal reporting handles selected paths. On Windows, a hidden PowerShell process waits for Wally to exit, retries install-directory removal, and removes that directory from the user PATH.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 1d03a

Model retention and Windows self-removal work as described. On Windows, a locked install folder can remain after uninstall reports success, with no message. The serve documentation overstates availability. Neither issue blocks merging.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 1d03a

Default model retention is protective, but explicit deletion can select a different store than the requested home. Windows cleanup can also affect a replacement installation or report success before cleanup finishes. These risks are local to the invoking account’s permissions, rather than a new remote or elevated access boundary.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: Explicit --home does not control uninstall selection when RUNANYWHERE_HOME contains an existing model store: models_directory searches the environment location first, although resolve_home and the uninstall contract give the explicit override precedence. With --yes --delete-models, this can delete a shared store outside the requested home. Interactive display and confirmation mitigate the mismatch, but do not restore the selection contract. The selection behavior is now connected to model deletion by this PR.
  • Medium · reliability · inferred: The new deferred helper is bound to a pathname rather than the consented installation’s identity. A reinstall at that same path can therefore be removed by an older helper. Cleanup also removes the PATH entry after exhausted deletion retries, while the parent reports success based only on process creation. This weakens replacement-state ownership and failure containment; canonical recognition at initiation does not protect later replacement state.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The newly affected assets are the selected shared model directory, the recognized Windows installation, and that account’s PATH. Effective destructive reach is limited by the invoking process’s filesystem permissions; the inspected launch requests no elevation. Shared models can affect other local applications using the same store.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — An environment-selected existing model store can take precedence over an explicit --home and reach deletion when model deletion is authorized. This is a destructive target-selection mismatch, not demonstrated remote exploitation or privilege escalation; it requires the conflicting local inputs and deletion consent.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Model deletion requires explicit flag selection or interactive confirmation; --yes alone preserves models. Windows cleanup edits the User PATH, and its exact case-insensitive directory comparison matches the expanded path form written by the installer.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Bounded retries limit helper activity but do not make cleanup atomic or generation-aware. Exhausted retries can leave installation files after PATH removal, and replacement or repeated lifecycle operations can compete over the same pathname without a completion or ownership handshake.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Derive destructive model selection from the authoritative resolved home, preserving explicit override precedence rather than searching unrelated existing stores first.
  • proposed — Bind deferred cleanup to installation identity and coordinate it with replacement operations. Verify removal before changing PATH, and distinguish scheduled cleanup from completed cleanup with a recoverable result.

Explanation

The PR implements part of [#101]: it keeps models by default, adds explicit --delete-models, lists selected paths, handles recognized Windows installs, and updates uninstall golden outputs. The reviewed code does not establish the required dry-run mode, protection for models used by another install, or interrupted-cleanup handling. The reported tests cover help and argument output only, not prior downloads, symlinks, platform removal, or cleanup interruption. For [#100], docs/ENGINES.md updates wally models pull, wally run, and public versus overlay platform claims. The PR does not update or test the required installer login and harness descriptions, and it does not establish fixture validation for all documented command and model examples.

Resolution

For [#101], add a documented dry-run path with ownership-aware model selection and preserve shared models unless explicitly selected. Add automated coverage for prior downloads, symlinks, each supported platform, and interrupted cleanup. Document remote sessions separately from local deletion. For [#100], update the relevant installer, editor, and harness documentation, validate documented commands and model IDs against the fixture catalog, and add or record automated validation.

**Windows ARM64** (Snapdragon): public kit has no llama.cpp/ONNX/Sherpa. The QHexRT overlay runs Hexagon NPU models from a local `*_HNPU` tree. Do not expect `mlx-*`, GGUF, or `sd15` on that binary.

`wally serve` is macOS and Linux.
`wally serve` is in every build and serves any model the binary has an engine for.

Qualify serve availability by build configuration.

serve is registered in every binary, but a build without server support returns an error instead of serving a model. Update the statement to identify server-enabled builds and the LLM-only server scope.

Suggested documentation fix
-`wally serve` is in every build and serves any model the binary has an engine for.
+`wally serve` is available in builds with server support and serves supported LLM models for which the binary has an engine.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Do not report success before the deferred removal finishes.

The function prints "wally is uninstalled" and returns 0 after the helper process starts. The helper ignores every error and stops after 20 attempts (about 5 seconds). If the folder is still locked after that, for example by an antivirus scan or another open wally process, the folder remains and the user receives no message. Either extend the retry window, or say in the message that removal is best-effort.
