Closes #98.

wally models list --cloud lists the cloud models on your account, tagged [cloud] in blue. --all now shows the local catalog plus those cloud models, and --local shows the local catalog alone (what --all used to do). The cloud lookup gives up after 3 seconds and falls back to the last saved list, so the command never hangs offline.

Tested manually on macOS, online and with the console unreachable.

Summary by cubic

wally models list now separates local and cloud models: --cloud lists your account's cloud models (tagged [cloud]), --local shows the whole local catalog, and --all shows both. Previously --all only listed the local catalog.

New Features

  • Cloud lookups time out after 3 seconds and fall back to the last saved list, so the command never hangs offline.
  • --json rows now include a cloud field marking cloud models.

Written for commit e42eb9d. Summary will update on new commits.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • wally models list now supports separate --local and --cloud filters, with --all combining local catalog and account cloud models. The default continues to show downloaded models.
    • Cloud models appear in table and JSON output when available. If cloud lookup fails, combined listings still show local results; cloud-only listings report an error when no cached results are available.
  • Documentation

    • Updated command help and guides to explain model listing filters and clarify the different model scopes.

Walkthrough

The models list command now supports downloaded, local, cloud, and combined scopes. Cloud lookups use a bounded request and can fall back to cached account model IDs. JSON, table output, help text, documentation, and golden outputs reflect the updated scopes.

Changes

Model listing

Layer / File(s) Summary
Bounded cloud model lookup
src/account/console.rs
fetch_models delegates to the new fetch_models_within method with a timeout of zero. The new method applies the supplied timeout to the models request.
Scope selection and cloud retrieval
src/commands/cmd_list.rs
The command supports downloaded, local, cloud, and combined scopes, and rejects conflicting scope flags. Cloud-inclusive scopes use a three-second lookup and cached account model IDs when available. Lookup failure returns an error for cloud-only scope and is reported but ignored for combined scope.
Model output and documented scopes
src/commands/cmd_list.rs, README.md, docs/MODELS.md, tests/golden/README.md, tests/golden/expected/*
JSON rows include a cloud field, and cloud models appear in JSON and human-readable output. Empty-result guidance, help text, documentation, and golden outputs reflect the new scope behavior.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to e42eb

An authentication failure in models list --cloud can show stale cloud models labelled as an unreachable service. The advertised 3-second bound can also be exceeded when the token needs refreshing. Both are localized to this command and should be fixed before merge.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to e42eb

The new cloud listing can present cached models after an authentication rejection, and its three-second timeout does not cover refreshing the account session. The demonstrated effects are limited to listing metadata and delayed local output; additional cloud access privileges were not established.

Retained concerns

  • Low · security · observed: The new cloud-list fallback treats authorization rejection like connectivity failure and returns cached IDs as successful cloud results. JSON carries no cached or unverified marker, weakening the account-list contract without granting additional server-side authority.
  • Low · reliability · observed: The new cloud dependency is not contained by a three-second operation deadline. Session opening or a 401-triggered refresh uses the existing 30-second default before completion or retry, delaying even the local results requested with --all. Session-opening failures also bypass the cache fallback.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • observed — The demonstrated exposure is console-supplied or profile-cached model identifiers emitted to the invoking user or JSON consumer. The new command also inherits credential refresh and persistence, but its added cloud operation requests model metadata rather than inference execution or entitlement changes.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • observed — A signed-in session that opens successfully can receive a forbidden response or remain unauthorized after refresh, yet return cached cloud rows with success when the cache is nonempty. Human output describes this as connectivity failure; JSON provides no degraded-authority marker. This is a newly introduced listing-contract weakness, not evidence that server authorization is bypassed.
  • inferred — Logging into another account in the same profile can leave the prior account's cached IDs when best-effort cache refresh fails. A later failed listing call can then attribute those IDs to the active account. The missing cache identity binding predates this PR; the new account-list output inherits it. Sensitivity of the IDs and remote exploitability are not established.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Session opening rejects unsigned credentials, and the console's authentication checks remain intact. Ordinary logout removes credentials and then clears the cache. Existing cached-ID display in the inspected harness path follows a successful live cache refresh, providing counterevidence against treating local cache storage itself as a new disclosure.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Timeout zero means the existing 30-second transport default, not an unlimited request. Nevertheless, the new three-second models-request timeout excludes session refresh and does not establish an end-to-end deadline, weakening containment of cloud failure for combined local-and-cloud output.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Preserve authorization rejection separately from availability failure. Permit offline fallback only under an explicit policy, bind cached data to account and console identity, and expose cached provenance in JSON as well as human output.
  • proposed — Use one operation deadline across session opening, refresh, models lookup, and retry so cloud failure cannot consume the longer default budget before local output or permitted cache fallback becomes available.

Explanation

Issue [#98] requires entitled hosted IDs with context and price provenance, distinct unreachable/unauthorized/empty handling, environment/profile verification, and shared metadata. This PR adds cloud IDs, local/cloud scopes, a 3-second request timeout, and cached-ID fallback. In cloud_models, the response maps ModelInfo to IDs only. The JSON and table rows use synthetic names and omit context and price provenance. ConsoleSession errors are all handled by the same cached fallback path, so unauthorized and unreachable results are not distinct when a cache exists. The code opens the saved session but does not verify environment/profile selection. Added unit tests cover flag mapping and tag formatting only; they do not validate these cloud behaviors.

Resolution

Implement the #98 catalog contract. Preserve and display hosted metadata, including context and price provenance. Classify unreachable, unauthorized, and empty responses separately. Verify and report the selected environment and profile. Use shared metadata rather than reducing cloud rows to IDs. Add automated tests for successful metadata output, each failure class, selection verification, timeout, and cache fallback.

Bound the complete models list --cloud lookup.

CLOUD_LOOKUP_TIMEOUT_MS applies only to fetch_models_within. ConsoleSession::open can refresh an expiring token first, and that refresh uses the 30-second transport default. A 401 can trigger the same refresh before the request is retried. The cached fallback can therefore run well beyond 3 seconds.

Pass a timeout or deadline through session setup and the 401 refresh path, or document that 3 seconds applies only to the models request.

Do not use cached cloud models after an authentication rejection.

ConsoleSession::call returns an authentication error after the refreshed session is rejected. cloud_models treats every error as a cacheable failure, so it can return stale model IDs. The caller then labels them "could not reach Wally Cloud", which misrepresents an authentication failure.

Use cached IDs only for connectivity or unavailable errors. Return authentication errors unchanged.
