fix(web): honor model load options and backend routing - #785
It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.

Walkthrough
Model loading now validates supported options and encodes context length and backend preferences in ModelLoadRequest. Lifecycle loading selects framework-compatible adapters and worker routes. Worker ownership records the framework used for a load, and embedding loading can use that framework.

Load option validation and request construction bindings/web/packages/core/src/Public/API/Namespaces/models.ts, bindings/web/packages/core/src/Public/API/Options.ts, bindings/web/packages/core/tests/unit/Public/API/Namespaces/models.toProgressEvent.test.ts
Load options retain backend preferences, reject retired threads and required backend preferences, and accept integer context lengths within the supported range. Request construction includes context length and mapped backend preferences. Tests cover request encoding and validation.
Lifecycle loading selects adapters and worker routes using framework preferences and capabilities. Worker ownership records the execution framework, which current-model and embedding paths use when available. Tests cover routing, worker loading, framework reporting, inference, and unload behavior.

fix(web): forward contextLength and backendPreferences on model load
fix(web): honor model load options and backend routing
Aug 25, 2026
ModelLoadRequest carries context_length (tag 6) and backend_preferences (tag 9) in the IDL, so the obsolete rejection of contextLength and the hardcoded empty backendPreferences list dropped real placement knobs. Forward both; keep rejecting threads only (retired from the load ABI -- reserved tag 7) and mark it deprecated on LoadOptions.
Align the import specifier with the mocked specifier.
Line 29 imports getActiveBackendWorkerHost from '../../../../src/runtime/BackendWorkerHost'. Line 34 mocks '../../../../src/runtime/BackendWorkerHost.js'. Vitest keys the mock registry by resolved module id. If the resolver does not unify the extensionless and .js specifiers, the binding imported at line 29 is the real function while RunAnywhere+ModelLifecycle.ts receives the mock. vi.mocked(...).mockImplementation at line 158 would then configure the wrong function and the assertions at lines 174-181 would not describe the code under test.
The coding guidelines also require relative imports in this package to name the emitted .js path.

Snapshot validated load options before the asynchronous acceleration step.
models.load validates options before await Runtime.setAcceleration(...), but this code later rereads options.contextLength and the caller-owned backendPreferences reference. If the caller mutates options during that await, the request can contain values that did not pass validation or a different backend order.
Copy the validated request inputs into ResolvedLoadOptions and build the request only from that snapshot.

Thanks for this, @shubhamsinnh! Web models.load() now honors contextLength and an ordered backendPreferences fallback instead of rejecting or silently dropping them, which also fixes a real base bug where a llama.cpp GGUF embedding model could load on the ONNX worker while inference went to the llama worker.
Before we merge, a couple of things to sort out:
bindings/web/packages/core/src/Public/Extensions/RunAnywhere+ModelLifecycle.ts:108 — selectModelLoadRoute picks the first backendPreferences entry whose WASM module is registered at all, without checking the module can actually serve the request's category. An STT load with backendPreferences: [llamaCpp, sherpa] locks onto the llama.cpp module (if it's registered) and never falls through to Sherpa/ONNX, even though llama.cpp has no STT primitive. Could you add the same modality check onnxWorkerModality/isLlamaWorkerEligible already do, before a candidate is picked as the route?
bindings/web/packages/core/src/Public/Extensions/RunAnywhere+ModelLifecycle.ts:300 — a worker-routed load discards result.framework (the proto's own comment calls it "the actual backend that executed the load, not the catalog/request pin"). Once backendPreferences can route a model to a different WASM module than its catalog framework, currentModel()/ensureLoaded() keep matching against the stale catalog value — e.g. an ONNX-catalogued embedding model force-routed to llama.cpp is later looked up under ONNX and dispatched to the wrong backend. Threading result.framework back into the registry snapshot (or keying lookups off listBackendWorkerOwnedModels()'s backendId) would fix it.
Not blocking this PR: I opened #881 for the native contextLength-on-already-loaded-model gap, #882 for the Swift LoadOptions parity gap, and #883 for GPU acceleration silently no-oping on non-llama.cpp backends — you're welcome to pick any of these up if you're interested.
Once that's in we'll take another look. Thanks again!

* docs: record the v0.20.33 release traps
Four lessons from cutting v0.20.33, which took four candidates. Two were real
defects that would have shipped an SDK where TTS does not link.
The expensive one: a new NeuRT archive must be added in FOUR places, and three
only fail in a build configuration a dev Mac never produces. Miss the force-load
lists and every native job is green while validate_consumer_flutter dies an hour
later on `Undefined symbol: _g_neurt_tts_ops` -- the engine registers, all CMake
targets compile, only a CONSUMER's link fails. Miss the `#if RAC_NEURT_ROUTABLE`
guard on the vtable entry and the opposite happens: routable builds are fine and
every PR job without NEURUN_TOKEN fails, because the non-routable shell still
references a symbol nothing defines. A machine with the payload staged is
routable and reproduces neither.
This file already notes that prose alone did not stop the checksum-staleness bug
recurring twice, so the archive-list half now has a mechanism:
`neurt_assert_no_unlisted_archives` fails packaging by name. The vtable guard has
none -- hence the instruction to audit all ten slots, and the note that moving
core/third_party/neurt aside reproduces a non-routable build in one step.
Also recorded: reuse_native_web_run_id is same-version-only (the wasm embeds
RAC_VERSION_STRING, and a skipped native_web leaves the candidate unusable for
publish_from_run_id); checksum verification must match by NAME as well as URL,
because a URL-only cross-check validates 9 of 15 sites and reports success; and
`rcli backends --json` against the OSS kit lists no neurt at all, so a
routability check there passes cleanly and proves nothing.

* fix(swift): forward contextLength and backendPreferences, reject required on load
ModelLoadRequest already carries context_length (tag 6) and the ordered
backend_preferences list (tag 9), so requireCarriableByLoadABI() was a false
preflight: it rejected both knobs and silently dropped
BackendPreference.required while claiming the native load ABI could not carry
them.
Forward both knobs on the load request (contextLength clamped into the wire
int32) and fail preflight on a `required` preference, because
backend_preferences carries framework enums only. `threads` (retired, reserved

leave RunAnywhere.capabilities().unavailable.

two knobs commons can honor and models.load() hardcoded an empty
backendPreferences list, dropping ordered fallback entirely.
BackendPreference.required was accepted but silently ignored.

* docs(swift): correct models.load doc for forwarded load options
* fix(swift): preserve first backend preference even when unspecified
loadResolved() skipped options.backendPreferences.first whenever it was
.unspecified and fell through to the catalog's model.framework, pinning the
legacy RAModelLoadRequest.framework field to the catalog backend. That pin
outranks the later entries in the ordered backend_preferences list, so a
caller's declared backend order was silently broken.
Keep the first preference regardless of its value and only fall back to
model.framework when no preference was supplied, matching React Native
(framework: requestedBackend.backend) and Kotlin
(requestedBackend?.backend ?: registered.framework.takeIf { it.value != 0 }).
* fix(swift): reject unrepresentable model context lengths
LoadOptions.contextLength uses Swift Int while ModelLoadRequest.context_length uses int32. Int32(clamping:) silently changed values outside the wire range. Use an exact conversion and reject unrepresentable values with invalidConfiguration instead.
* docs(core,swift): propagate UTF-8 text-run streaming docstrings across LLM and VLM headers (#929, #923)
Update stale "Called for each generated token" docstrings to describe
delivery as UTF-8-safe text runs generated by the model.
Applies the correction consistently across:
- core/include/rac/features/llm/rac_llm_component.h
- core/include/rac/features/llm/rac_llm_types.h
- core/include/rac/features/vlm/rac_vlm_component.h
- core/include/rac/features/vlm/rac_vlm_types.h
- bindings/swift/Sources/RunAnywhere/CRACommons/include/rac_vlm_component.h
- bindings/swift/Sources/RunAnywhere/CRACommons/include/rac_vlm_types.h
Closes#929, #923.
* fix(core): reject negative model context lengths
ModelLoadRequest.context_length uses zero as the model-default sentinel, so negative values have no valid meaning. Reject them at the shared lifecycle boundary before registry or backend work so every binding follows the same contract.
* chore(idl): refresh schema lock
Refresh the tracked schema digest after documenting the context_length validity contract in model_types.proto.
* chore(idl): bump schema version
The model_types.proto contract changed, so advance the patch schema version and keep SCHEMA_LOCK metadata synchronized.
* docs(readme): rename rcli to wally and drop the Homebrew line
RunanywhereAI/RCLI was renamed to RunanywhereAI/wally, and both install
scripts now install a binary called wally (install.sh:147,154 and
install.ps1:144 on wally main 02d8d06). So every `rcli ...` example in
the README failed for anyone who followed it end to end.
This renames the binary, the repo links and the install URLs in the
quick start, the terminal details section, the SDK and feature table
rows, the OpenAI-compatible server section and the platform table. The
commands and flags themselves are unchanged. wally main still registers
pull (an alias of models download), run with --no-think and --image,
tts, stt, voice, vad, embed, image, lora, serve on port 8080, and a
global --json.
The Homebrew lines are removed. runanywhereai/tap still has only
Formula/rcli.rb (0.20.24, last commit e9c777b on Aug 18), which installs
rcli, not wally, and wally's own README documents only the two install
scripts. The brew line can come back once the tap ships a wally formula.
Left as is on purpose:
- The "RCLI WORKS" string in the transcript is the recorded model output
for that prompt, and it hasn't been re-captured under wally.
- The MetalRT paragraph and the "Real projects" entry describe RCLI as a
MetalRT-powered voice assistant with 40+ system actions. wally's own
AGENTS.md calls MetalRT retired, so a straight rename would make a
claim about wally that I can't back.

"x86_64 only", so drop aarch64 from the requirements table.

* docs(readme): use `wally models pull` in the quickstart
wally 0.6.0 has no top-level `pull`: register_models_aliases() is
defined in cmd_models.cpp but never called from app.cpp, so only the
`models pull` subcommand is reachable.

* fix(swift): preserve catalog preference for unspecified backend
Leave the optional framework field unset for a single unspecified backend
preference so native resolution can use the catalog's preferred framework.
Keep explicit pins, empty preferences, and ordered multi-entry behavior.
Cover differing catalog frameworks and framework absence after encoding.

Resolved the __testing__ export conflict by keeping BOTH sides: main s probe
exports (probeAvailableRamBytes / probeAvailableStorageBytes /
KNOWN_EXHAUSTED_BYTES_SENTINEL) are consumed by models.probes.test.ts, and the
PR s request helpers (makeModelLoadRequest / resolveLoadOptions /
validateLoadOptions) by the load-path tests. Dropping either breaks the other.
Maintainer merge.
Hi @shubhamsinnh — I merged the current main into your branch (resolved a small conflict in bindings/web/packages/core/src/Public/API/Namespaces/models.ts) and retargeted the PR from temp/development to main.
The conflict was in the __testing__ export block, and it was worth being careful about: main exports probeAvailableRamBytes / probeAvailableStorageBytes / KNOWN_EXHAUSTED_BYTES_SENTINEL (consumed by models.probes.test.ts), while your branch exports makeModelLoadRequest / resolveLoadOptions / validateLoadOptions. Keeping only one side would have broken the other's test file, so I kept both and ran the suite on the merged result: npm run typecheck + eslint --max-warnings 0 + vitest → 60 files / 284 tests passed (up from 282, because both your new tests and main's probe tests now run).
I also retargeted the base to main. Your branch descends from main and the change lands there — your React Native and Swift counterparts of this are already in via #950 — so the base is now the branch you are actually building on.
One thing still open from my earlier review, which is the reason this is a needs-author rather than an approval — both items are in RunAnywhere+ModelLifecycle.ts:
selectModelLoadRoute (:108) picks the first backendPreferences entry whose WASM module is registered without checking it can serve the request's category, so an STT load pinned to llama.cpp never falls through to Sherpa/ONNX.
A worker-routed load (:300) discards result.framework, so once preferences can route a model to a different module than its catalog framework, currentModel()/ensureLoaded() keep matching the stale catalog value.
Nothing needed from you on the merge itself; CI is re-running on the refreshed head.

preference so native resolution can use the catalog's preferred framework.
Keep explicit pins, empty preferences, and ordered multi-entry behavior.
Cover differing catalog frameworks and framework absence after encoding.

Thanks for this, @shubhamsinnh! Forwarding contextLength and the ordered backendPreferences onto ModelLoadRequest closes a real gap — the pre-flight rejection was wrong, and the deprecated framework alias, the retired threads rejection and the honest refusal of BackendPreference.required are all handled well.
Before we merge, two things to sort out:
bindings/web/packages/core/src/Public/Extensions/RunAnywhere+ModelLifecycle.ts:108 — selectModelLoadRoute adopts the first candidate whose WASM is registered, with no test that it can serve the request's category. That route framework is then passed as loadFramework into backendWorkerLoadRoute (:612), where onnxWorkerModality (:156) and isLlamaWorkerEligible (:135) treat it as an override of request.framework/model.framework — so an STT load with [llamaCpp, sherpa] locks to llama.cpp, and because each WASM has its own plugin registry and MEMFS (see the comment at :600-605) the load hard-fails instead of falling through. Could you gate each candidate on whether the module serves the request's primitive, using the capability slots that already exist (getModuleForCapability, runtime/EmscriptenModule.ts:1192), keeping the catalog module as a candidate so an onnx-first preference for an LLM still resolves to the llama WASM? A test with a LANGUAGE model and an onnx-first preference list would pin it.
RunAnywhere+ModelLifecycle.ts:300 — the worker load path decodes ModelLoadResult (which carries the framework that actually executed the load, idl/model_types.proto:557) but records only the ownership and the module, so currentModelFromBackendWorker (:233-241) keeps matching the catalog framework and reports it back (:248). Concretely: your new test at RunAnywhere+CrossWasmModelLifecycle.test.ts:134-183 loads an ONNX-catalogued embedding onto the llama worker, and afterwards Embeddings.ensureLoaded (RunAnywhere+Embeddings.ts:92-106) gets found: true with ONNX, so requireAdapter('onnx') (:164) dispatches embedBatch to the backend that does not own the model. Recording result.framework on the ownership entry (or keying the lookup off the owner's backendId) would close it.
CodeRabbit has one optional point still open that we're happy to leave for later: #785 (review) (snapshot the validated options before the await).
Not blocking this PR: I opened #{issue} for surfacing the native fallback_reason in models.load, and #{issue} for the missing registered-but-can't-serve routing test — you're welcome to pick either up.
One housekeeping note: swift-spm is currently red on main's own pre-existing #979 breakage (a Swift file this PR does not touch). You'll need to merge current main into the branch before the checks can go green.
Once that's in we'll take another look. Thanks again!
Clear worker ownership for both backends after a main-thread load.
clearModelOwnedByBackendWorker(request.modelId) uses the default backendId of 'llamacpp'. If the same model ID was previously owned by the 'onnx' worker, that ownership entry stays after the main-thread load succeeds.
This PR makes the scenario reachable. A request-level backend preference can now move one model between the ONNX worker, the llama worker, and the main thread. For example, you load an embedding on the ONNX worker. You then reload it with a llama.cpp preference while no llama worker host is active. The stale entry stays. currentModelFromBackendWorker keeps reporting the model as loaded under the old framework. getBackendWorkerModelFramework returns the old framework to Embeddings.ensureLoaded.
Apply the same change to the retry path at line 750.

Hey @sanchitmonga22 and @Siddhesh2377, sorry for the delay. I’ve fixed the routing and worker ownership issues and addressed the follow-up feedback. All checks are green now. Please take another look when you get a chance. Thanks!
Hey @Siddhesh2377@sanchitmonga22,
Have addressed the routing and worker ownership feedback and added tests for the fixes.
Please have another look when you get a chance.
Thanks @shubhamsinnh! I re-checked head 8d98aec: the capability gating in selectModelLoadRoute, the worker-reported framework on ownership, and the tests for them are all in place, and CI is green. Treating the earlier asks as addressed and moving this to merge.

Thanks a lot for this, @shubhamsinnh, and for your patience through the review rounds! models.load on Web now sends contextLength and the full ordered backendPreferences, picks the WASM module and BackendWorker from the requested framework (checking each module can actually serve the model's category), and records the framework that really loaded so currentModel() and embeddings stay on the right backend.
Checked: CodeRabbit reviewed the latest commit · CI green · built and linted locally merged into main (Web core typecheck, lint, 310 unit tests, and the repo's fast gates) · two independent code reviews.
Optional, small: Embeddings.ensureLoaded (RunAnywhere+Embeddings.ts:101) only reuses a preference-routed owner when a BackendWorker holds the model; a main-thread load into a non-catalog WASM would be reloaded via the catalog framework on the next embed call. Handled in the follow-ups below rather than here.
Follow-ups, not blocking: #1178 (unload the previous owner when a model's backend changes), #1179 (resolve the main-thread owner in Embeddings.ensureLoaded) — you're welcome to pick these up.
Approved from my side — it merges as soon as a second maintainer signs off.
