fix(web): surface native fallbackReason and warnings on LoadedModel (#1041) - #1050
Passes ModelLoadResult from SDKCore.loadModel into toLoadedModel in bindings/web/packages/core/src/Public/API/Namespaces/models.ts.
Surfaces result.fallbackReason ?? result.warnings?.[0] ?? Runtime.degradedReason ?? undefined on LoadedModel.fallbackReason. This ensures skipped backend preferences and advisory options reach the caller, maintaining honest runtime state parity with React Native (bindings/react-native/packages/core/src/Public/Api/Models.ts:392).
Exposes toLoadedModel under the __testing__ seam for focused unit verification.
Adds comprehensive unit tests to models.toProgressEvent.test.ts.
Testing & Validation
Added 6 dedicated unit test cases in bindings/web/packages/core/tests/unit/Public/API/Namespaces/models.toProgressEvent.test.ts:
Surfacing native fallbackReason when present.
Falling back to warnings[0] when fallbackReason is absent.
Proving native fallbackReason wins over Runtime.degradedReason.
Proving native warnings[0] wins over Runtime.degradedReason.
Falling back to Runtime.degradedReason when native result carries neither.
Leaving fallbackReasonundefined when neither exists.
Ran tests & linters:
npm test -- models.toProgressEvent.test.ts (9/9 passed)
npm run typecheck -w packages/core (passed, zero errors)
npm run lint -w packages/core (passed, zero warnings)
Fixes LoadedModel.fallbackReason in the web bindings to report the actual reason a model load degraded, instead of only the global runtime degraded reason.
Passes the native ModelLoadResult into toLoadedModel, preferring result.fallbackReason, then result.warnings[0], then Runtime.degradedReason.
Exposes toLoadedModel under the __testing__ seam and adds unit tests covering precedence and undefined cases.
Written for commit 25b6dc6. Summary will update on new commits.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Model load results now show the most relevant fallback reason available: the specific reason reported during loading takes precedence, followed by the first warning and then the runtime’s degraded-state reason. If none of these reasons is available, no fallback reason is shown. This makes the information displayed after a model loads more accurately reflect the outcome.
…unanywhereAI#1041)
- Pass ModelLoadResult into toLoadedModel in models.load
- Prefer native result.fallbackReason, followed by result.warnings[0], then Runtime.degradedReason
- Export toLoadedModel under __testing__ seam
- Add unit tests verifying fallbackReason surfacing and precedence over Runtime.degradedReason
FixesRunanywhereAI#1041
The web models API now uses fallback information from the model load result when it constructs a loaded model. Tests cover precedence among the native fallback reason, the first native warning, and the runtime degraded reason.

toLoadedModel selects the load result’s fallback reason, its first warning, or the runtime degraded reason, in that order. models.load passes the result to toLoadedModel. Tests cover the precedence and the case where no reason is available.
RunanywhereAI/runanywhere-sdks#1043: This issue concerns missing TypeScript checks for web test files and relates to type errors reported in the new tests.

RunanywhereAI/runanywhere-sdks#785: It forwards backend preferences to model loading; this change surfaces fallback reasons from the resulting load.
RunanywhereAI/runanywhere-sdks#1159: It adds the test TypeScript project to the core typecheck script, which validates the test changes here.

Explanation
Directly linked issue #1041 requires that web LoadedModel.fallbackReason surface native load degradation data and take precedence over Runtime.degradedReason. At the reviewed head, models.load passes the ModelLoadResult into toLoadedModel. toLoadedModel sets fallbackReason to result?.fallbackReason ?? result?.warnings?.[0] ?? Runtime.degradedReason ?? undefined, which matches the precedence in the issue. The test file models.toProgressEvent.test.ts adds unit tests for: native fallbackReason surfaced; warnings[0] used when fallbackReason is absent; native fallbackReason beating Runtime.degradedReason; native warnings[0] beating Runtime.degradedReason; runtime fallback when the native result is empty; and undefined when no source exists. These cover the #1041 done-when items. The mapping surfaces whatever the native result reports. The request at models.load sends backendPreferences: [] at the reviewed head. Whether commons reports a skipped preference for this request was not verified, because the whole-PR models.ts diff could not be read (changed blobs missing from checkout). The reviewed head file content was read instead. The PR summary states that only the mapping, the testing export, and the tests changed in models.ts. The reviewer-reported test type errors appear corrected at head (MODEL_CATEGORY_LANGUAGE, INFERENCE_FRAMEWORK_LLAMA_CPP, numeric loadedAtUnixMs). No validation run after those corrections is recorded.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The PR changes three areas. In models.ts it changes the toLoadedModel fallbackReason mapping, passes the load result into it from models.load, and exposes toLoadedModel through testing. In models.toProgressEvent.test.ts it adds unit tests for the same mapping and imports the helpers those tests need (afterEach, ModelCategory, InferenceFramework, setRuntimeDegradedReason). All of these changes connect directly to #1041. No unrelated production behavior or unrelated file change was identified in the reviewed evidence. The whole-PR models.ts diff was not readable, so this verdict relies on the head file content and the PR summary for that file.

Thanks for this, @shobhitagnihotri69! This closes the gap #1041 describes: models.load now threads the native ModelLoadResult into toLoadedModel, so LoadedModel.fallbackReason reports result.fallbackReason ahead of the global Runtime.degradedReason — a caller whose preferred engine quietly fell through to priority order finally sees why instead of a plain success. The precedence matches React Native's exactly, and the source change is right.
One thing to sort out before we merge:
bindings/web/packages/core/tests/unit/Public/API/Namespaces/models.toProgressEvent.test.ts:113 — the new tests don't typecheck, and CI can't tell. ModelCategory.MODEL_CATEGORY_LLM (12 uses) and InferenceFramework.INFERENCE_FRAMEWORK_LLAMACPP (12 uses) don't exist — the generated names are MODEL_CATEGORY_LANGUAGE and INFERENCE_FRAMEWORK_LLAMA_CPP — and loadedAtUnixMs: 1234567890n (6 uses) is a bigint against a number field. I ran npx tsc -p packages/core/tsconfig.test.json --noEmit: 16 errors on the base, 46 with this PR, 30 of them on this file. Nothing catches it today — packages/core/tsconfig.json:16 excludes **/*.test.ts, ESLint is on the non-type-checked preset, and vitest strips types, so the enum members read as undefined at runtime and the assertions still pass. The rename is mechanical and is the whole fix. (The pre-existing 16 are tracked in Web tests are never typechecked (tsc -p tsconfig.test.json is wired to nothing) #1043 — this just avoids adding 30 more.)
Not blocking this PR: I opened #{issue} for reporting the real placement on LoadedModel (runtimeVersion and abiVersion are still hardcoded undefined while the native result carries them) — you're welcome to pick it up if you're interested.
(The red swift-spm check on this head is a network flake fetching the Sherpa/ONNX inventory, unrelated to your diff — nothing to do there.)
Once the rename is in we'll take another look. Thanks again!
Hi @shobhitagnihotri69, just checking in on this one — the six new unit tests in models.toProgressEvent.test.ts still need to typecheck under the test tsconfig (the enum member names from the review). No rush; if you would rather a maintainer picks it up, say so and we will.

- Rename ModelCategory.MODEL_CATEGORY_LLM to MODEL_CATEGORY_LANGUAGE
- Rename InferenceFramework.INFERENCE_FRAMEWORK_LLAMACPP to INFERENCE_FRAMEWORK_LLAMA_CPP
- Use number literal for loadedAtUnixMs instead of bigint to match type definition

Exercise fallback propagation through models.load.
The added tests call __testing__.toLoadedModel directly, so they do not detect a regression that removes result from the public models.load call. The public path currently passes the native result at models.ts:418, but the inspected public tests contain no models.load coverage. Add one focused test that loads through models.load with a native fallbackReason or warning and asserts the returned LoadedModel.fallbackReason.

Thanks @shobhitagnihotri69, and thanks for pushing the test fixes. The enum names and numeric loadedAtUnixMs look right now, and the fallbackReason change itself looks good. main has moved since you branched and now conflicts with this PR in bindings/web/packages/core/src/Public/API/Namespaces/models.ts (the __testing__ export block, which now also exports makeModelLoadRequest, resolveLoadOptions and validateLoadOptions) and in bindings/web/packages/core/tests/unit/Public/API/Namespaces/models.toProgressEvent.test.ts (the proto imports at the top). Could you merge main into your branch (or rebase) when you get a chance? Keep all the existing __testing__ entries and add toLoadedModel, and merge the duplicate InferenceFramework/ModelCategory imports. We'll look again as soon as it's updated.
