Description

Fixes #882.

Swift and React Native rejected contextLength and ordered backend preferences even though ModelLoadRequest can carry both fields. They also accepted a required backend preference without representing that constraint on the wire.

Both bindings now forward the context length and complete preference list, reject required preferences, and retain the existing rejection of threads and accelerator options. Context values must be non-negative and fit int32; React Native also rejects fractions and non-finite numbers before encoding. Shared core validation rejects negative values from direct native callers too.

React Native reports the backend returned by native loading rather than the first requested backend. A lone unspecified preference leaves the optional framework field absent so Commons can honor the catalog's preferred framework, even when it differs from the model framework. An unspecified entry before later preferences preserves the caller's ordering. Swift capability reporting exposes the remaining required-preference limitation.

The branch incorporates main at f8aabbbf5, retaining the accepted upstream streaming documentation and newer native/schema features. Its documentation-only schema change uses IDL version 1.5.1, with SCHEMA_LOCK regenerated from the complete final set of 41 schemas.

Context configuration remains advisory at the engine boundary, as required by the existing engine contract. MLX and QHexRT do not currently configure session creation from this request field. Native warnings are surfaced through fallbackReason; adding adjustable context support to those runtimes is outside this binding fix. No public runtime callback ABI or SDK release version is changed.

Reviewer guidance: inspect the encoded request, the lone/mixed unspecified preference cases, React Native's actual-backend mapping, and the schema lock relative to main.

Type of Change

  • Bug fix
  • New feature
  • Documentation update
  • Refactoring

The small Swift request-builder extraction makes the production mapping directly testable; it adds no public API.

Testing

  • Lint passes locally
  • Added/updated tests for changes

Completed on Windows on the local merge of main at f8aabbbf5, retaining the published 14be8154e fixes:

  • React Native core lint and typecheck, including test-source typechecking, passed using Yarn 3.6.1 through the installed Corepack entry point.
  • The complete React Native core Jest suite passed: 15 suites, 85 tests. The focused load-options suite includes 16 passing tests.
  • Pinned TypeScript/C++ generation completed with protoc 35.1: bash idl/codegen/generate_all.sh --only ts,cpp.
  • The schema lock was regenerated from the merged 41-proto inputs with bash idl/codegen/schema_lock.sh --update. Consistency and version-bump validation passed against the exact captured main lock: bash idl/codegen/schema_lock.sh --check --require-bump build/pr950-review/SCHEMA_LOCK.main.
  • The final core/src/core/model_lifecycle.cpp passed a C++20 syntax-only compilation using the configured MinGW compiler and regenerated headers. This was not a linked native build or native test run.
  • git diff --check and git diff --cached origin/main --check passed. The contribution-scope audit compares the final result with the captured main, rather than treating accepted upstream changes as part of this fix.

The commit-time hook reported that Lefthook was unavailable on PATH; the checks listed above were run directly rather than through that hook.

Exact package/test entry points used:

# From bindings/react-native
node "C:/Program Files/nodejs/node_modules/corepack/dist/yarn.js" workspace @runanywhere/core lint
node "C:/Program Files/nodejs/node_modules/corepack/dist/yarn.js" workspace @runanywhere/core typecheck

# From the repository root
node bindings/react-native/node_modules/jest/bin/jest.js --config bindings/react-native/packages/core/jest.config.js --runInBand --silent --json --outputFile build/pr950-review/rn-core-main-tests.json

# Focused syntax-only compilation with the configured compiler/includes
powershell -NoProfile -File build/pr950-review/check-model-lifecycle-syntax.ps1

The full Jest suite passed on the merged tree without new test changes. The source-text assertions use canonical checkout bytes; their files have no contribution diff.

Seven Swift tests cover encoded request mapping, context bounds/default presence, required-preference rejection, capability reporting, and backend ordering. The single-unspecified case uses differing model and preferred frameworks and checks that framework absence survives protobuf encoding. They cannot be executed on this Windows host. Full generate_all.sh was attempted on the merged 41-proto set and stopped at missing protoc-gen-swift; the separate TypeScript/C++ generation above passed. Full all-language generation and its drift gate still require CI validation, and lock consistency alone is not claimed as proof that every language was regenerated locally. Swift builds/tests and strict SwiftLint also remain unverified locally. The existing swift-spm job performs them, and pr-build.yml is eligible to run on a new update now that this PR targets main; check that the jobs actually run and pass before treating Apple validation as complete. The overall lint checkbox remains unchecked because SwiftLint has not run locally. No linked native build, native test execution, device inference, or MLX/QHexRT execution is claimed for this integration.

Checklist

  • Code follows project style guidelines
  • Self-review completed
  • Documentation updated (if needed)

No public API migration is required. Previously unsupported required/threads/accelerator options still fail preflight, invalid context values are rejected, and valid requests retain their complete preference order. The runtime context limitation and unperformed platform checks are described above; no changelog or release bump is needed for this existing bug-fix contribution.

Screenshots

No UI layout or rendering changes. Mobile, tablet, and desktop screenshots do not demonstrate the request-encoding and routing behavior; validation evidence is provided under Testing.

Four lessons from cutting v0.20.33, which took four candidates. Two were real
defects that would have shipped an SDK where TTS does not link.

The expensive one: a new NeuRT archive must be added in FOUR places, and three
only fail in a build configuration a dev Mac never produces. Miss the force-load
lists and every native job is green while validate_consumer_flutter dies an hour
later on `Undefined symbol: _g_neurt_tts_ops` -- the engine registers, all CMake
targets compile, only a CONSUMER's link fails. Miss the `#if RAC_NEURT_ROUTABLE`
guard on the vtable entry and the opposite happens: routable builds are fine and
every PR job without NEURUN_TOKEN fails, because the non-routable shell still
references a symbol nothing defines. A machine with the payload staged is
routable and reproduces neither.

This file already notes that prose alone did not stop the checksum-staleness bug
recurring twice, so the archive-list half now has a mechanism:
`neurt_assert_no_unlisted_archives` fails packaging by name. The vtable guard has
none -- hence the instruction to audit all ten slots, and the note that moving
core/third_party/neurt aside reproduces a non-routable build in one step.

Also recorded: reuse_native_web_run_id is same-version-only (the wasm embeds
RAC_VERSION_STRING, and a skipped native_web leaves the candidate unusable for
publish_from_run_id); checksum verification must match by NAME as well as URL,
because a URL-only cross-check validates 9 of 15 sites and reports success; and
`rcli backends --json` against the OSS kit lists no neurt at all, so a
routability check there passes cleanly and proves nothing.

ModelLoadRequest already carries context_length (tag 6) and the ordered
backend_preferences list (tag 9), so requireCarriableByLoadABI() was a false
preflight: it rejected both knobs and silently dropped
BackendPreference.required while claiming the native load ABI could not carry
them.

Forward both knobs on the load request (contextLength clamped into the wire
int32) and fail preflight on a `required` preference, because
backend_preferences carries framework enums only. `threads` (retired, reserved
tag 7) and `accelerator` stay rejected, and the now-stale loadOptions entries
leave RunAnywhere.capabilities().unavailable.

Aligns the Swift load path with Web (RunanywhereAI#785), Flutter (RunanywhereAI#786) and Kotlin.

Swift forwards the full preference list but omits a leading .unspecified value from legacy framework. The native resolver then prepends the model framework before it reaches later explicit preferences, so [.unspecified, .llamaCpp] can select the model default before .llamaCpp, unlike React Native, which skips UNSPECIFIED and continues in list order. Preserve the leading enum in framework or reject .unspecified so the ordered preference list has the same behavior across bindings.

loadResolved() skipped options.backendPreferences.first whenever it was
.unspecified and fell through to the catalog's model.framework, pinning the
legacy RAModelLoadRequest.framework field to the catalog backend. That pin
outranks the later entries in the ordered backend_preferences list, so a
caller's declared backend order was silently broken.

Keep the first preference regardless of its value and only fall back to
model.framework when no preference was supplied, matching React Native
(framework: requestedBackend.backend) and Kotlin
(requestedBackend?.backend ?: registered.framework.takeIf { it.value != 0 }).

500-500: 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Reject out-of-range contextLength values before conversion.

RAModelLoadRequest.context_length is an optional int32, and load_options_json forwards that value to the native layer. Int32(clamping:) changes values outside the Int32 range to Int32.min or Int32.max, so the native request can contain a different context length. requireCarriableByLoadABI() does not validate this field. Use an exact conversion and throw invalidConfiguration when the value is not representable. The inspected contract does not establish a non-negative requirement, so enforce only the Int32 range here.

🟡 Minor · Do not serialize .unspecified as an explicit framework. · bindings/swift/Sources/RunAnywhere/Public/API/Namespaces/ModelsNamespace.swift:495-499

495-499: 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Do not serialize .unspecified as an explicit framework. ModelLoadRequest.framework is a proto3 optional field, so assigning .unspecified marks it present. preferred_framework_for then returns .unspecified instead of model.framework. Native selection skips that value, tries later backend_preferences, and uses primitive priority only when no candidate has a registered engine. This can select a different backend or fail instead of honoring the model framework.

        if let backend = options?.backendPreferences.first?.backend,
           backend != .unspecified {

existing behavior for valid backend preferences and avoid assigning .unspecified

…s LLM and VLM headers (RunanywhereAI#929, RunanywhereAI#923)

Update stale "Called for each generated token" docstrings to describe
delivery as UTF-8-safe text runs generated by the model.

Applies the correction consistently across:
- core/include/rac/features/llm/rac_llm_component.h
- core/include/rac/features/llm/rac_llm_types.h
- core/include/rac/features/vlm/rac_vlm_component.h

- bindings/swift/Sources/RunAnywhere/CRACommons/include/rac_vlm_component.h
- bindings/swift/Sources/RunAnywhere/CRACommons/include/rac_vlm_types.h

Closes RunanywhereAI#929, RunanywhereAI#923.
ModelLoadRequest.context_length uses zero as the model-default sentinel, so negative values have no valid meaning. Reject them at the shared lifecycle boundary before registry or backend work so every binding follows the same contract.

Refresh the tracked schema digest after documenting the context_length validity contract in model_types.proto.
The model_types.proto contract changed, so advance the patch schema version and keep SCHEMA_LOCK metadata synchronized.

RunanywhereAI/RCLI was renamed to RunanywhereAI/wally, and both install
scripts now install a binary called wally (install.sh:147,154 and
install.ps1:144 on wally main 02d8d06). So every `rcli ...` example in
the README failed for anyone who followed it end to end.

This renames the binary, the repo links and the install URLs in the
quick start, the terminal details section, the SDK and feature table
rows, the OpenAI-compatible server section and the platform table. The
commands and flags themselves are unchanged. wally main still registers
pull (an alias of models download), run with --no-think and --image,
tts, stt, voice, vad, embed, image, lora, serve on port 8080, and a
global --json.

The Homebrew lines are removed. runanywhereai/tap still has only
Formula/rcli.rb (0.20.24, last commit e9c777b on Aug 18), which installs
rcli, not wally, and wally's own README documents only the two install
scripts. The brew line can come back once the tap ships a wally formula.

Left as is on purpose:
- The "RCLI WORKS" string in the transcript is the recorded model output
for that prompt, and it hasn't been re-captured under wally.
- The MetalRT paragraph and the "Real projects" entry describe RCLI as a
MetalRT-powered voice assistant with 40+ system actions. wally's own
AGENTS.md calls MetalRT retired, so a straight rename would make a
claim about wally that I can't back.

- `wally serve` is LLM-only and registers /v1/chat/completions and
/v1/models (plus /health), not the Python server's full endpoint set.
- install.sh only ships linux-x86_64; any other Linux arch fails with
"x86_64 only", so drop aarch64 from the requirements table.

wally 0.6.0 has no top-level `pull`: register_models_aliases() is
defined in cmd_models.cpp but never called from app.cpp, so only the
`models pull` subcommand is reachable.

🟡 Minor · Honor contextLength in the MLX creators. · Models.ts:356-364

🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Honor contextLength in the MLX creators.

When contextLength is positive and the router selects MLX, the React Native and Swift mappings send context_length to the backend. The MLX llm_create and vlm_create functions discard config_json and call create_session without the requested context length. The core guard rejects unsupported primitives, but it does not reject this MLX path. The load can therefore succeed with the model’s default context instead of the requested context.

Consume context_length when creating the MLX session. If MLX cannot support an explicit context length, reject the request before session creation instead of silently using a different context.

Thanks @shubhamsinnh! This needs a rebase before it can land: idl/VERSION and idl/SCHEMA_LOCK now conflict with temp/development.

The idl/VERSION side is straightforward — this branch bumps it to 1.2.0 and the base has moved on. The SCHEMA_LOCK file is the one to be careful with: it records a digest over every .proto, so it has to be regenerated from your final schema set rather than hand-merged. After rebasing, bash idl/codegen/schema_lock.sh --update rewrites it correctly.

Could you rebase onto temp/development (or merge it in) and let the lock regenerate? We'll look again as soon as it's updated.

Reviewed with help from Claude Code and Codex.

Merge temp/development and regenerate the schema lock at IDL 1.3.1.
Validate context values before encoding, preserve ordered preferences,
and report the actual backend and advisory warnings from native loading.
Expose required-preference limits and cover request mapping boundaries.

Do not set framework for one .unspecified preference.

With exactly one .unspecified preference, the current condition falls through to model.framework. The shared resolver treats that field as authoritative and does not consult model.preferred_framework. If those catalog values differ, the loader can select model.framework instead of the catalog-preferred backend.

Keep the existing multi-entry behavior, but only use model.framework when no backend preference was supplied.

Leave the optional framework field unset for a single unspecified backend
preference so native resolution can use the catalog's preferred framework.
Keep explicit pins, empty preferences, and ordered multi-entry behavior.

Cover differing catalog frameworks and framework absence after encoding.

Thanks @shubhamsinnh! This needs a rebase before it can land: idl/VERSION and idl/SCHEMA_LOCK now conflict with the base.

The idl/VERSION side is straightforward. The SCHEMA_LOCK file is the one to be careful with — it records a digest over every .proto, so it has to be regenerated from your final schema set rather than hand-merged:

./idl/codegen/generate_all.sh && git add idl/SCHEMA_LOCK

Could you rebase onto main (or merge it in) and let the lock regenerate? We'll look again as soon as it's updated.

Reviewed with help from Claude Code and Codex.

Merge the current main branch while preserving the load-options fixes and
accepted upstream changes. Retain the updated streaming documentation.

Advance the comments-only schema revision to 1.5.1 and regenerate the
schema lock from the final 41-proto set.

Thanks a lot for this, @shubhamsinnh! Carrying contextLength and the ordered backendPreferences list across the wire closes a gap the previous comment had documented as "throws rather than being silently dropped" — and doing it by extracting a shared modelLoadRequest(...) builder (ModelsNamespace.swift:531) so explicit and automatic loading build the same request is the right shape: one place constructs it, both paths get the fix, and the SDK can no longer drift from what the native ABI actually accepts.

Checked: CodeRabbit reviewed the latest commit · CI green, no failures · merged into main and compiled the changed core translation unit locally · two independent code reviews. A few specifics worth recording:

  • contextLength reaches the core. Swift assigns it at ModelsNamespace.swift:531, React Native at Models.ts:376; both serialize the whole request and forward the bytes to rac_model_lifecycle_load_proto. Nothing drops it on the way down.
  • Order is preserved. resolvedBackendPreferences returns the caller's list verbatim, and the core consumes it in the listed order at model_lifecycle.cpp:878 (pin_candidates), selecting the first registered engine for the primitive. An empty or unspecified preference behaves as before — no silent reordering of existing behaviour.
  • The IDL change is comment-only and the lock is honest. No field added, removed or renumbered, so wire compatibility is unchanged; schema_lock.sh --check reports ✓ 1.5.1 / 54812f1f… (41 protos) against the protos it ships with, including the deliberate 1.5.0 → 1.5.1 bump.
  • The core addition is a negative-context_length guard (+10 lines), paired with requireValidContextLength on the RN side rejecting non-integers, negatives and values above 2^31-1 before the wire. It does not touch the reload decision that #949/#980 own in the same file, so the two compose rather than collide.

One thing from the review worth knowing, not blocking: the ordered list selects among available engines — it does not retry if a chosen backend fails to initialize. That matches the current ABI and is the sensible reading of "preferences"; if you ever want true fallback-after-failure, that is a core change rather than a binding one.

Follow-ups, not blocking: the threads/accelerator knobs still fail preflight here, and the docstring now says why, which is the honest state.

* docs: record the v0.20.33 release traps

* fix(swift): forward contextLength and backendPreferences, reject required on load

`threads` (retired, reserved
tag 7) and `accelerator` stay rejected, and the now-stale loadOptions entries
leave RunAnywhere.capabilities().unavailable.

Aligns the Swift load path with Web (RunanywhereAI#785), Flutter (RunanywhereAI#786) and Kotlin.

Fixes RunanywhereAI#882

* fix(rn): forward contextLength and backendPreferences, reject required on load

ModelLoadRequest carries context_length (tag 6) and the ordered
backend_preferences list (tag 9), so unsupportedLoadOptionKeys() was rejecting
two knobs commons can honor and models.load() hardcoded an empty
backendPreferences list, dropping ordered fallback entirely.
BackendPreference.required was accepted but silently ignored.

Forward contextLength and the full ordered preference list, and fail preflight
on a `required` preference because backend_preferences carries framework enums
only. `threads` (retired, reserved tag 7) and `accelerator` stay rejected.

Aligns the React Native load path with Web (RunanywhereAI#785), Flutter (RunanywhereAI#786), Kotlin and
Swift.

Fixes RunanywhereAI#882

* docs(swift): correct models.load doc for forwarded load options

* fix(swift): preserve first backend preference even when unspecified

loadResolved() skipped options.backendPreferences.first whenever it was
.unspecified and fell through to the catalog's model.framework, pinning the
legacy RAModelLoadRequest.framework field to the catalog backend. That pin
outranks the later entries in the ordered backend_preferences list, so a
caller's declared backend order was silently broken.

Keep the first preference regardless of its value and only fall back to
model.framework when no preference was supplied, matching React Native
(framework: requestedBackend.backend) and Kotlin
(requestedBackend?.backend ?: registered.framework.takeIf { it.value != 0 }).

* fix(swift): reject unrepresentable model context lengths

LoadOptions.contextLength uses Swift Int while ModelLoadRequest.context_length uses int32. Int32(clamping:) silently changed values outside the wire range. Use an exact conversion and reject unrepresentable values with invalidConfiguration instead.

* docs(core,swift): propagate UTF-8 text-run streaming docstrings across LLM and VLM headers (RunanywhereAI#929, RunanywhereAI#923)

Update stale "Called for each generated token" docstrings to describe
delivery as UTF-8-safe text runs generated by the model.

Applies the correction consistently across:
- core/include/rac/features/llm/rac_llm_component.h
- core/include/rac/features/llm/rac_llm_types.h
- core/include/rac/features/vlm/rac_vlm_component.h
- core/include/rac/features/vlm/rac_vlm_types.h
- bindings/swift/Sources/RunAnywhere/CRACommons/include/rac_vlm_component.h
- bindings/swift/Sources/RunAnywhere/CRACommons/include/rac_vlm_types.h

Closes RunanywhereAI#929, RunanywhereAI#923.

* fix(core): reject negative model context lengths

ModelLoadRequest.context_length uses zero as the model-default sentinel, so negative values have no valid meaning. Reject them at the shared lifecycle boundary before registry or backend work so every binding follows the same contract.

* chore(idl): refresh schema lock

Refresh the tracked schema digest after documenting the context_length validity contract in model_types.proto.

* chore(idl): bump schema version

The model_types.proto contract changed, so advance the patch schema version and keep SCHEMA_LOCK metadata synchronized.

* docs(readme): rename rcli to wally and drop the Homebrew line

* docs(readme): correct wally's serve endpoints and Linux arch

- `wally serve` is LLM-only and registers /v1/chat/completions and
/v1/models (plus /health), not the Python server's full endpoint set.
- install.sh only ships linux-x86_64; any other Linux arch fails with
"x86_64 only", so drop aarch64 from the requirements table.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

* docs(readme): use `wally models pull` in the quickstart

wally 0.6.0 has no top-level `pull`: register_models_aliases() is
defined in cmd_models.cpp but never called from app.cpp, so only the
`models pull` subcommand is reachable.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

* fix(swift): preserve catalog preference for unspecified backend

Leave the optional framework field unset for a single unspecified backend
preference so native resolution can use the catalog's preferred framework.
Keep explicit pins, empty preferences, and ordered multi-entry behavior.

Cover differing catalog frameworks and framework absence after encoding.
