feat(web): ask about selected text in a side chat - #28559
Selecting text in an assistant response only offers Cite, which quotes it into the main thread's composer. To ask a side question about that text without adding to the thread, you have to open a side chat from the + menu or type /side, then find your place and quote the text by hand.
Change
The selection toolbar now has Ask to the right of Cite, joined as one control using the existing ButtonGroup. Ask starts a side chat with the selection cited in its composer and the caret after the citation, so you type your question and send. It sends nothing by itself.
useSideChat.open takes { prompt } or { draft }. /side keeps sending as before. A draft is written before the tab opens, then a workspace focus request targets that side chat's composer. Without it, the panel's default focus landed on Bring back.
The citation keeps pointing at the main thread, where the source message lives.
Closing an unused side chat deletes it, as before, and now clears its draft too. Delete does the same. Otherwise each unused Ask would leave its quote in persisted composer drafts. The delete reply also succeeds when the server keeps a used side chat, so the draft clears only once waitForThreadRemoval sees the thread leave the live shell, the same approach as waitForProjectRemoval.
Ask is hidden wherever side chats aren't offered: inside a side chat, on subagent threads, on servers without the capability, and while a worktree is being set up. It's also hidden when the selection is too long to cite.
It goes through the same fork path as other side chats, so providers need no per-adapter change. No server or contract changes.
Web and desktop share this code. Mobile can't create citations, so it doesn't change.
Scope and approval
There is no prior discussion or maintainer approval for this. It is a small feature, not a bug fix, so I'm not claiming an exception in CONTRIBUTING.md. It's one change that adds an entry point to two existing capabilities, citations and side chats. If it needs an Ideas discussion first, I'm glad to open one.
Verification
Ran in the web dev client against isolated dev state, using the Replay (dev) provider's showcase turn:
Ask opened the side chat tab in about 240 ms locally, with the citation chip in the composer, focus in the composer, and the caret after the chip.
Sending delivered the citation and question as one message, and the reply rendered.
Inside the side chat, the toolbar showed only Cite.
Closing an unused side chat took its draft count from 1 to 0.
Closing a used side chat with an unsent follow-up kept the side chat and the follow-up, checked more than 5 seconds after closing.
Selections were made and buttons clicked by script in the Browser panel. A real double-click also brought up the toolbar.
vp test run src/hooks/useRightPanelSurfaceClose.browser.test.tsx: 8/8 pass. The new cases cover the thread leaving the live shell, the server keeping the thread, a failed delete, and a shell that isn't live. The three cases that must keep the draft failed before the fix. vp run check:changed passes.
Not checked: the too-long selection state in a real client, Tab and Escape on the two-button control, the Electron build, remote or tunnel connections, and real providers.

The pull request adds an Ask action for eligible assistant citations. It opens a side chat with a formatted citation draft and requests composer focus. Side-chat cleanup clears drafts after successful deletion and confirmed thread removal.

The toolbar shows Ask when a side-chat callback is available and the citation is within the length limit. The timeline and ChatView pass the citation to side chat. The side-chat hook accepts prompt or draft seeds, stores a supplied draft, and requests composer focus. The documentation describes the Ask action.

Side-chat closure clears the draft only after successful deletion and confirmed thread removal in a live shell. SideChatPane clears the draft after successful thread deletion. Browser tests cover removal, deletion, and shell conditions.

reproduced the missing action on github/main (b50d8a1b15): selecting the codex reply offered only cite. stopped that server before starting the pr server with the same app-created data in isolated state.
ask opened a side chat with an unsent citation and focused the caret after it. typing and sending reached codex. codex requested t3_thread_read for the cited main thread; after approval through the web client, it answered the question in the side chat. the main conversation stayed unchanged.
go to source highlighted the original main-thread text.
cite still inserted into the main composer. /side still sent immediately and returned a real codex reply. ask was absent inside the side chat. tab focused cite then ask; escape dismissed the toolbar.
closing an unused ask chat cleared its persisted draft. explicit delete did too. closing a used chat preserved an unsent follow-up beyond the five-second deletion wait; reopening restored it.

Conflict: ChatView.tsx kept main's WorkspaceMutationIdContext wrapper and re-added this PR's onOpenCitationInSideChat prop.
