Selecting /side or /btw from the slash menu required another Enter and left keyboard focus outside the side chat. Now a bare command opens the side chat immediately and focuses its input, so typing can continue there. Closes #29976.

Keep inline /side <question> and trailing-question completion intact, and reuse the existing submit guards. The pane owns its composer handle and focuses it when visible and ready. Web and desktop share this path; mobile has no equivalent creation command. Existing submit helpers move above the selection callback so React Compiler can still optimize the composer.

Verification:

  • Reversing just the production fix makes both alias regressions fail because one Enter does not open a side composer; restoring it passes. vp test run apps/web/src/components/ChatView.browser.test.tsx apps/web/src/composer-logic.test.ts: 64 passed.
  • Final vp run check:changed: all steps pass, including format, lint, both knip checks, affected typechecks, 3 browser tests, and 3 React Compiler checks.
  • Built-in Browser against isolated worktree state, Linux/Chromium, free Replay provider: reproduced the original /sid → Enter insertion; verified both aliases open and focus a side composer with one Enter, subsequent typing reaches it, and inline /side Explain the clamp example. sends the question into a side chat. Native macOS Electron was not run.
Before: one Enter leaves /side in the main composer After: one Enter opens the side input and typing reaches it

Recordings: before, after. Evidence is hosted on the fork, outside the source tree.

Eligibility: a focused fix for an obvious keyboard-flow bug in the existing side-chat capability under CONTRIBUTING's small-bug exception; no new capability or product default.

Approvability

Verdict: Needs Human Approval

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — Bare side-chat slash commands now open and focus the side composer immediately. The new focus effect adds an oxlint suppression in SideChatPane.tsx:51, which requires human review.

Explain Change →

Walkthrough

Selecting /side or /btw without other prompt text now submits the command immediately. When the side-chat pane is visible and its shell is ready, its composer receives focus. Browser tests cover command selection, text preservation, and composer focus.

Changes: Side-chat selection

Layer / File(s) Summary
Submit bare side-chat commands
apps/web/src/components/chat/ChatComposer.tsx
The composer submits /side or /btw when the command is the only non-whitespace prompt content and no queued message is being edited. Otherwise, the command replacement preserves trailing text and focuses the editor. Submission and dictation handling are defined earlier in the component; the duplicate implementation is removed.
Focus the visible side-chat composer
apps/web/src/components/chat/RightPanelSurfaceContent.tsx, apps/web/src/components/chat/SideChatPane.tsx
The parent passes visibility to SideChatPane. When the pane is visible and its shell is ready, the pane schedules focus on its composer and cancels the scheduled frame during cleanup.
Exercise side-chat selection in the browser
apps/web/test/fakeEnvironment.ts, apps/web/src/components/ChatView.browser.test.tsx
The fake environment can advertise and simulate side chats. The browser test checks that trailing text remains in the main composer and that a bare command opens and focuses the side-chat composer.

Explanation

[#29976] ChatComposer submits a bare /side or /btw selection through the existing guards. SideChatPane focuses its composer when visible and ready. Inline questions retain the existing submission path. Browser tests cover both aliases, trailing text, focus, and typing. The author reports that the tests passed.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

[#29976] The composer, pane, and panel changes support immediate opening and focus. The queued-message guard protects an existing editing flow. The browser test and fake environment provide regression coverage. Moving the submit helpers lets the selection handler reuse them.

Merged current main (e6784c4cb3)

main changed submitComposer (dictation submit handling) at the spot this pr moved it from. the merge keeps main's version and places it above onSelectComposerItem, as this pr needs. 559ecfc6a0 also stops a bare /side or /btw selection from auto-submitting while editing a queued message, where submit would save the command as the queued text (CodeRabbit finding). vp run check:changed passed through blacksmith-check, and both /sid and /btw browser tests pass on the merge. the real dev app run below is from e767f8a56b and was not repeated on the merge.

Verified in a real dev environment

verified head e767f8a56b7246106cc745074ac7cb25aa680c75 on linux with the real dev web app, repository playwright, /usr/bin/google-chrome, and codex gpt-6.1-sol through the local provider proxy. no mocks, replay provider, or seeded fixtures. the project and conversation were created through the app against a real git repository.

  • reproduced on github/main (cefb544af3c9): selecting /sid or /btw with one enter left the completed command in the main composer and opened no side chat.
  • stopped main before starting the exact pr head. reused a copy of the real conversation for matching data.
  • both aliases now open a side chat with one enter. the side textbox was the active element, and subsequent keyboard typing reached it without another click.
  • submitted the side question to codex. after approving its parent-thread read through the app, it returned the parent's codeword and number: amber-pine and 37.
  • nearby behavior passed: trailing-text completion preserved /side keep this question in the main composer without opening early; inline /side <question> received 17 in a side chat; a normal parent follow-up received 7; reopening an existing side chat focused its input.
  • vp run check:changed cefb544af3c98224874419198c0359b652ca3c94 passed through blacksmith-check: format, lint, both knip checks, affected typechecks, browser tests, and react compiler checks. no source changes were needed.

before on main: one enter leaves the command in the main composer

after on the pr: one enter opens the side input and typing reaches it

real codex side turn retrieves the parent codeword and number

Add queued-edit regression coverage.

Select a bare /side while editing a queued message and assert that selection does not save it. Then explicitly save the edit and assert that the save succeeds. This covers the guard that prevents menu selection from saving the queued message.
