Starvation finished on this line (#4298), so drop it from Required and from the new final-lag-sample and lag-dashboard dependencies.

The frontier held each source only by a Weak to its track, so when the
track died first (the subscriber's state dropping before its stats guard,
or a group serve dropping its group before its Delivery), the final sample
failed the upgrade and discarded the bytes since the last tick. Sources now
hold the track's Production strongly and use the Weak only for liveness.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Registry::report read every entry out, then pruned those only the map
still held. A guard whose last bump (such as a frontier's final lag
sample) landed between the two was retired without that bump reaching
any per-broadcast report. Each tier now decides it is done before its
readout, so a racing bump lands in this readout or the next.

fix(net): sample a closing subscription's lag once more

Re-applies the egress lag frontier on main's route-copy resume (#4741): a
logical subscription watches its serving route's copy and unwatches a
replaced one. Production records move into group::Producer::open_frame.

Merged origin/main into the line (a1e80a2) and marked it ready; the line's remaining children stay open for later.

Notable conflict resolutions:

  • rs/moq-net/src/model/resume.rs: main rewrote the resume as reading route copies (fix(net)!: resume route changes by reading the routes' copies; a path is one broadcast #4741), which replaced the splice segments the frontier hooked into. I took main's file and re-applied the lag tracking on top of it. Each Copy now carries the reader's stats::Frontier. A copy watches its track once its subscription answers, as long as it still serves. When a switch replaces it, it unwatches. I ported lag_weighs_every_segment as lag_weighs_the_serving_copy.
  • rs/moq-net/src/model/track.rs: Subscribing::poll_ok keeps main's Inner::{Plain, Resume} shape and wires stats_sub into it. Subscriber::watch/unwatch now match on Inner.
  • rs/moq-net/src/model/group.rs: main moved frame opening into open_frame, so the production().record call moved there too.
  • Quests: starvation.md stays deleted (it is finished on the line). starvation-frames.md follows main's move to m2, keeps /quest/m2/quic-ack-hook.md and drops the finished Starvation blocker. I also removed the stale Starvation links from quest/m1/quic/README.md and track-priority-scope.md. quest check passes.

just check passes (moq-net: 5641 tests).

Open child PR still targeting this branch: #4381.

Review in Change Stack →

Walkthrough

The change adds publisher-only lag and dropped-media metrics to traffic reports. Production tracking, acknowledged subscription frontiers, and group-stream delivery outcomes supply the measurements. The change updates aggregation, serialization, tests, and a sampling benchmark. Documentation explains the fields and their sampling behavior. Several QoS quest documents and related links are removed or revised.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 9c518

This branch now marks the QoS line as ready to land even though the splice-lag requirement it previously depended on is no longer tracked. Merging it could therefore ship lag metrics with known route-switch inaccuracies. Smaller robustness issues in stats aggregation and subscription bookkeeping should also be addressed.

Automated review by review (OpenAI)

Reviewed commit: a1e80a2 (full current PR diff; no previous attributed review).

  • P2 — Preserve deferred lag weight when a replacement source has no timestamps. In rs/moq-net/src/stats.rs:1913–1931, sample() takes unsampled before newest?. A route switch unwatches the old source (model/resume.rs:463–470), preserving its remaining bytes only in unsampled. If a stats tick runs while the replacement is pending or has not produced its first frame, newest is None and those bytes disappear permanently, including from the final drop-time sample. Retain the old source's final timing information or defer the weight without consuming it; test a switch followed by a tick before the replacement's first frame, and closure during that gap.
  • P2 — Count bytes actually written rather than the frame's declared size. rs/moq-net/src/lite/publisher.rs:2788,2818 and rs/moq-net/src/ietf/publisher.rs:2817,2847 call Delivery::wrote before draining the payload. A partially produced frame, or a stream that blocks while flushing its header and then expires, can therefore report the entire frame as dropped despite writing little or none of its payload. Account payload bytes as poll_write succeeds and track frame timestamps separately; cover a reset with zero/partial payload written in both publishers.

Direction: periodic byte-weighted sampling, cumulative aggregation, and final sampling are a sensible foundation, but the route-switch and partial-write accounting above should be corrected before relying on these metrics.

Verification limits: static inspection of the diff and relevant source paths only; no tests or benchmarks run. The author's reported just check pass was not independently verified.

Automated review: moq#4133 (QoS questline parent)

This lands the QoS line's egress telemetry on main. Each egress subscription gets an acknowledged frontier that moves forward when a group stream's FIN is acknowledged. Each Registry::report tick samples a byte-weighted lag histogram from it, and a dropped counter records group streams that ended unacknowledged. Both ride the existing moq-stats publisher rows and are summed across nodes. CI is green on this head and the PR merges cleanly.

Findings

  1. Blocker (questline): Required children aren't done. quest/m1/qos/README.md still lists two Required quests, Lag dashboard (quest/m1/qos/lag-dashboard.md) and Publisher timeliness (quest/m1/qos/publisher-timeliness.md). Neither has a child PR open or merged against quest/m1/qos/README. The PR body says the line stays a draft until that list is empty. On top of that, draft quest(qos): block the line on the #4298 splice lag findings #4381 (audit/qos-blockers) records a 09-28 maintainer ruling that two feat(stats): per-broadcast viewer lag and dropped media on egress rows #4298 splice-lag findings block this line from reaching main. That quest (lag-splice.md) hasn't been merged into the line, and one of its two bugs is still present (see 2).

  2. Medium: lag weight is lost across a route switch while the new copy has no frame yet.

    • When Reader::sync (rs/moq-net/src/model/resume.rs:469) replaces a copy, it calls unwatch, which moves the old copy's unsampled bytes into state.unsampled (stats.rs:1896).
    • FrontierInner::sample then empties unsampled (stats.rs:1913) before it knows any source has a frame. With the new copy still Sub::Pending, or answered but empty, let newest = newest?; (stats.rs:1931) returns None and those bytes are gone.
    • On a relay, a fresh upstream copy is typically empty for about one RTT after a switch. Any tick, or a final drop-time sample, that lands in that window under-counts the subscription.
    • lag_weighs_the_serving_copy doesn't catch this because it writes b2 before ticking.
    • Fix: on the early return, put the weight back (state.unsampled = weight), or keep the retired source's last newest/first edge so the weight can still be bucketed. Add a sibling test that ticks between the switch and the new copy's first frame.
  3. Low: a timestamp regression hides a stalled viewer.

    • Production::record keeps the newest timestamp with fetch_max (stats.rs:1795), and Delivery::acked only moves the frontier forward (stats.rs:1994).
    • Say a caught-up viewer has acked == newest == M and the publisher's timestamps then step back (encoder restart on the same track). newest stays at M, so behind = newest - acked (stats.rs:1938) is zero.
    • The wall-clock fallback only runs when behind is non-zero. So the viewer reads as being in the 50ms bucket for every new byte, even if it stops acknowledging entirely, until the new timeline passes M.
    • Publisher timeliness plans to count these regressions, but egress lag should at least not report "healthy". For example, run the wall-clock arm whenever the frontier hasn't moved while weight arrived, not only when behind > 0.

Nits (non-blocking)

  • open_frame (model/group.rs:700) adds the declared size to Production up front. A chunked frame aborted mid-stream still weighs lag with bytes that were never produced.
  • On IETF, each subgroup stream gets its own Delivery, so dropped.groups counts abandoned subgroup streams, not groups. The rustdoc says "streams", but doc/concept/stats.md says "groups".

Verdict: ITERATE (reviewed head a1e80a2)

Automated review by review (OpenAI)

Delta review at 1b195ac, following a1e80a2.

The updated plan is better: quest/m1/qos/README.md:47–49 now explicitly blocks this line on lag-splice, and lag-splice.md:26–46 describes the pending-weight and retired-source cases plus final sampling. Separating telemetry from the undecided health verdict also keeps scope clear.

The earlier implementation findings remain open (#4133 (review)). In particular, the new prerequisite is not a fix: stats.rs:1913 still consumes unsampled before the missing-timestamp early return. The separate partial-write accounting finding is not covered by lag-splice: lite/publisher.rs:2818 and ietf/publisher.rs:2847 still charge next.size before draining the payload. Keep both corrections as landing blockers; the simplest path is focused fixes and negative-control tests rather than changing the histogram design.

Verification: reviewed the updated QoS plan and checked those source paths at this head. This is a focused delta review, not a fresh review of every main-merge change; no tests run. No duplicate inline findings added.

Resolves cluster-routing/README.md against #4946 (main's audit edits win,
the epoch wording stays). Also applies the audit decisions this PR owns:

- Delete quest/m0/wildcard/README.md and transcode-group-start.md: claim
workers mint their own epoch, so they are never spliced, and #4403
landed the rest of the line. Remove every link to either.
- m0 README: Wildcard landed in #4403.
- hop-removal: drop the NO_CAPACITY bullet (#4403 removed it), and `moq`
mints the epoch when --epoch is omitted.
- cluster-routing/selection: identity is path plus epoch.
- stats-split: relate the QoS line (#4133 rebases onto its tracks).

Automated follow-up review: moq#4133 at head 9c5189be, a re-review after the push from a1e80a24 (last Grok review). The push has two parts. 1b195acd is a merge of main. 9c5189be lands #5009 into the line: a retired route's unsampled bytes are now kept per source, together with the edge they were produced at (Folded in stats.rs:1894-1916). sample records them even when the replacement has no frame yet, and also on drop. lag-splice.md is deleted, along with its references in the qos README and quest-flat-lines.md. This was a static review; I ran no tests.

Earlier findings

  • 2 (lag weight lost across a route switch): fixed. sample no longer drains a shared unsampled before newest?. Each Folded item is recorded at state.lag(item.newest, now) before the live-source early return at stats.rs:2001, and Drop for FrontierInner goes through the same path. lag_weighs_the_serving_copy now ticks between the switch and B's first frame and checks both the total and the 500ms bucket, which is the negative control I asked for. lag_ignores_a_track_replaced_before_its_first_frame covers the second feat(stats): per-broadcast viewer lag and dropped media on egress rows #4298 finding. The trade-off that frames written into a held group after the switch go unweighed is documented at resume.rs:488-491 and tested.
  • 1 (questline blocker): the splice hold is cleared, but the landing order has changed on main. With lag-splice done, the two remaining Required quests (Lag dashboard, Publisher timeliness) are covered by the 10-04 "land partial now" decision in quest-flat-lines.md, so they don't block on their own. See the new blocker below.
  • 3 (a timestamp regression hides a stalled viewer): still open. The new FrontierState::lag (stats.rs:1929-1941) keeps the same early Duration::ZERO return when newest - acked is zero. That means a frontier that stops moving after the publisher's timestamps step back still reads as healthy.
  • Nits: still open. open_frame still records the declared frame size up front (model/group.rs:700). The publishers still charge next.size to Delivery::wrote before the payload is drained (lite/publisher.rs:2818, ietf/publisher.rs:2847, the same point as the OpenAI P2). I didn't re-check the IETF subgroup-vs-group wording for dropped.groups, and this push didn't touch it.

Blocking

A. The branch conflicts with main, and main has since put stats-split ahead of this line. The PR is CONFLICTING, 155 commits behind main. Only Quest (queued) and Auto-merge (skipped) report at this head, so none of the Rust checks have run on #5009's code merged with current main. The bigger problem is the 2026-10-06 audit on main (#4946), which adds this to quest/m1/qos/README.md: "stats totals and prefix tracks lands first ... #4133 rebases its histograms onto stats-split's totals and prefix tracks rather than the per-path publisher.json and subscriber.json map rows it writes today". quest/m0/broadcast-epoch/stats-split.md is still open on main, and I found no PR for it. Read literally, that decision holds this PR until stats-split lands, and then needs a rework of where the lag histogram and dropped counters are published. That's more than a merge.

When you do merge main, watch for these:

Non-blocking

B. A serving copy dropped during a no-route gap stays watched. This carries over from my #5009 follow-up. When the route goes to none, Reader::sync returns at resume.rs:479 before the replaced-copy loop, so the old copy keeps until == None and stays watched. If the reader is caught up, let_go (resume.rs:519) drops that copy without unwatching it. When B arrives, the loop never sees A, so A's source stays in FrontierState::sources for as long as A's cache track is alive, which on a relay can be a long time. Every frame A publishes afterwards then weighs this reader's lag. Fix: in let_go, unwatch a copy that's being dropped while until.is_none(). Test: serve A, drain, serve none, drain, serve B, write to A, and assert the weight doesn't move.

Verdict: ITERATE (reviewed head 9c5189be02cadb222ee3a91249d5d78c1635674a). The splice fix is correct and well tested. What's left is merging main and settling the stats-split ordering decision, plus finding 3 and B as small fixes.

Keep #4133 blocked by the splice quest.

Although #4381 is closed, its description says #4845 supersedes it and that #4133 remains held until lag-splice.md is fixed. The reviewed diff removes both the QoS requirement and the landing hold, while lag-splice.md is absent at this revision.

Qualify the freshness guarantee for unsupported backends.

Line 43 says that backends without poll_acked retain group-granularity Delivery. Lines 6–9 state the one-frame freshness guarantee without this exception. Limit that guarantee to backends that support poll_acked, and state that other backends retain group-level resolution.

to apply only to backends that support `poll_acked`; clarify that backends
without `poll_acked` retain group-level `Delivery` resolution.

Define frontier behavior for reordered timestamps.

Line 29 assigns the frontier to each acknowledged frame's timestamp. quest/m1/qos/publisher-timeliness.md, Lines 35–37, states that B-frame reordering can make timestamps non-monotonic within a group. An acknowledged frame can therefore move the frontier backward. The dropped.duration span at Line 31 can then use an incorrect starting point. Define a reorder-aware frontier rule and apply it to the dropped-span calculation.

Use a saturating add for Dropped::duration in Dropped::add.

Overflow in Duration's += panics in release builds as well as debug builds. Traffic::add calls Dropped::add, and moq-stats calls Traffic::add through Mergeable::merge on rows that serde decoded from node broadcasts. A node can publish a very large "dropped":{"duration":...}, from a bug or a corrupted counter. DurationMilliSecondsWithFrac<f64> accepts any value up to Duration::MAX. If two such rows merge, the aggregator task panics instead of reporting a large total. Today's u64 counters only wrap in release builds, so this field adds a new crash path.

Update Dropped::add to combine duration with saturating addition so merging

Bound Counters::frontiers when Registry::report is not called.

Each egress subscription pushes one Weak<FrontierInner> into Counters::frontiers. Only Counters::sample removes entries, and only Registry::report calls Counters::sample. Registry::snapshot never prunes. A registry that is drained only through snapshot(), or drained rarely, keeps one dead Weak allocation per closed subscription. Subscription churn on a long-lived broadcast therefore grows this vector without limit. resume::Consumer::subscribe already uses the sweep-at-capacity pattern for the same problem. Apply that pattern here, so pushes stay amortized O(1) and the vector tracks the live count.

Review comment at @rs/moq-net/src/stats.rs around lines 1863 - 1868:
Update the frontier registration path identified by `Counters::frontiers` to
sweep dead weak references when the vector reaches capacity, following the
existing sweep-at-capacity pattern in `resume::Consumer::subscribe`. Then append
the new frontier so pushes remain amortized O(1) and stored entries track live
subscriptions even when `Registry::report` is not called.

Automated review by review (OpenAI)

Reviewed commit: 9c5189b

Incremental review of #5009's landing since 1b195ac. The earlier lost-weight P2 is fixed: stats.rs:1894–1916 retains each retired source's weight and edge, and :1996–2005 records it before the missing-live-edge return, including on drop. The replacement-before-first-frame and A → B → A tests cover the serving-copy policy. Omitting post-switch frames in held old groups is the documented approximation.

Still open:

  • P2, partial-write accounting from the earlier review: lite/publisher.rs:2788,2818 and ietf/publisher.rs:2817,2847 still charge the whole payload before writing it. A zero/partial-write reset overstates dropped bytes; count successful payload writes and test both publishers.
  • P2, retire a watched copy across a no-route gap. Independently confirmed finding B already reported here: resume.rs:478–479 skips unwatch when the route becomes absent, then :524–543 can discard the drained copy. A later replacement cannot unwatch it; an A track kept alive by another reader continues contributing unreachable bytes. Unwatch a discarded, still-uncapped copy and test A → none → B with subsequent writes to A. This is a carried issue, not introduced by the new Folded representation. No duplicate inline comments added.

Direction: the splice fix is useful, but these accounting gaps remain. The branch conflicts with main. Its recorded stats-split-first order also requires moving these histograms from per-path maps onto totals/prefix tracks; review that integration after reconciliation.

Verification: GitHub-only static delta/source/regression review; no tests or benchmarks run. No Rust workflow result was returned for this exact head. Open/non-draft state, head, reviews and discussion rechecked before submission.

Rebase note from the 2026-10-08 quest audit: main's quest/m2/starvation-frames.md already dropped its Required on the deleted /quest/m1/qos/starvation.md. Keep main's link-free version and layer your stats::Traffic / Registry::report / dropped.duration wording on top.

/quest-iterate stopped before merging main. Nothing was pushed, and the head is still 9c5189be.

Why. Per main's quest/m1/qos/README.md (2026-10-08), the egress histogram is now its own quest, viewer lag histogram. It lands only after stats-split. But everything this branch adds over main is that histogram: Production, Frontier, Delivery, Dropped, Histogram, the moq-stats merge, the bench, and the docs. The other quest edits are already on main, because starvation, final-lag-sample, and lag-splice were deleted there. So, apart from the histogram, the line has nothing left to land.

The merge is also more than a merge. A trial merge needed only simple resolutions in cache.rs (wakes next to production), group.rs (skip Production::record for untimed frames), and stats.rs. It then failed to compile against main's sans-IO time model (#4437):

  • model::clock lost its frozen test clock, which the sampler tests use (clock::advance).
  • The sampler reads wall time in four places: Registry::report, opening a Frontier, Delivery acks, and the final sample in Drop for FrontierInner. main expects caller-supplied time. The Drop sample has no caller to supply it, so it needs a redesign rather than a mechanical port.
  • Smaller fixes: Delivery::wrote now gets an Option<Timestamp> (untimed tracks, feat(net)!: carry untimed tracks faithfully #4822), with_max_age became with_max_delay (feat!: name subscriber staleness max_delay; publisher retention keeps max_age #4917), and the lite publisher test needs a new runtime field.

Decision for the maintainer:

  1. (Recommended) Close quest(qos): Broadcast health and congestion #4133 without landing it, as the flat-lines quest did with the code-free lines. Keep this branch, or a renamed ref, as the starting point for lag-histogram. Record in lag-histogram.md the time port above and the findings still open here: Grok 3 and B, the OpenAI partial-write P2, and CodeRabbit's Dropped::add saturation and frontier sweep.
  2. Port to main's time model now and land quest(qos): Broadcast health and congestion #4133 with the histogram. That reverses the 2026-10-06 and 2026-10-08 decisions, and stats-split would then have to carry it.
  3. Port now on the line but hold it open until stats-split lands. That keeps a line branch alive, which goes against the flat-lines plan.

Closing without landing, per the decision in #4133 (comment) (option 1, taken under /recommended): every code change this line has over main is the egress lag histogram, which main already split into quest/m1/qos/lag-histogram.md (requires stats-split). The code is preserved on wip/4133-lag-histogram (same commit, 9c5189b), and #5096 folds the time-model port and this PR's open review findings into that quest. Reopen if you'd rather keep the line.
