Summary

An expired Kiro account could keep showing Logged in after AWS SSO rejected its refresh with HTTP 400 invalid_request. Preserve that exact refresh-response discriminator separately from terminal grant errors, try matching rotated Kiro CLI credentials first, then persist attention evidence fenced to the failed credential generation. Account summaries project needsReauth: true and the active provider projects loggedIn: false after that access token expires. Internal refresh eligibility remains available; successful refresh or credential replacement clears the evidence.

Desktop input errors, unrelated CLI identities, network failures and 5xx responses do not independently create attention. Existing terminal grant quarantine and verify_account behavior are retained. No GUI files changed. Update the OAuth owner contract and English provider documentation.

Closes #6701

Verification

Canonical health follow-up (8b4e44838c4bb55cd85cb3b3f6885ce1f606699d)

Canonical stored OAuth health now reuses the login-status generation/expiry attention predicate, passing its supplied now. /api/oauth/accounts returns reauth_required / refresh_failed, the Refresh failed label and login action; collected CLI health and ocx doctor report the same attention. Internal terminal quarantine and refresh eligibility are unchanged. The existing focused test file gained four cases, so both test-layout registrations remain valid without edits.

  • Red before this follow-up's production fix: bun test ./tests/oauth/oauth-kiro-refresh-attention.test.ts: 19 pass, 3 fail. Canonical expiry-boundary health, collected CLI health and /api/oauth/accounts incorrectly returned healthy instead of reauth_required. Log retained in local ignored .tmp/health-followup/red.log.
  • bun test ./tests/oauth/oauth-kiro-refresh-attention.test.ts ./tests/providers/kiro/kiro-oauth.test.ts ./tests/oauth/oauth-status-privacy.test.ts ./tests/oauth/oauth-reauth-bind.test.ts ./tests/oauth/oauth-health.test.ts ./tests/service/doctor-oauth.test.ts ./tests/cli/cli-status-oauth-health.test.ts: 158 pass, 0 fail. Covers supplied-time expiry boundary, stale generation and non-Kiro exclusion, API health/label/summary/action, collected CLI health and doctor warning/action, read-only store behavior, credential privacy and existing terminal-quarantine/verification behavior.
  • bun test ./tests/test-layout.test.ts ./tests/test-layout-tooling.test.ts ./tests/ci-workflows/file-size-ratchet.test.ts: 27 pass, 0 fail. layout.json remains 1,998 lines, with no caps raised.
  • bun run typecheck: passed.
  • bun run structure:check: passed; the OAuth owner contract now names canonical health and doctor attention.
  • bun run privacy:scan: passed.
  • git diff --cached --check: passed before the commit.

The full local suite was not run under the explicitly bounded parallel-lane scope and shared-resource exception; focused regressions and the requested static checks completed. No GUI files changed. Hosted CI was not awaited, rerun or cancelled; final-head CI and independent review remain coordinator integration gates. Earlier docs-site build evidence below belongs to the initial implementation; this follow-up changes only the structure contract.

Initial implementation (fe9078f831c68abd813c04023af59fdc8a35c665)

  • Red before implementation: bun test ./tests/oauth/kiro-refresh-attention.test.ts (the regression's initial filename): 8 pass, 7 fail. The exact expired AWS SSO rejection and management-status cases expected loggedIn: false but received true. The test was subsequently named oauth-kiro-refresh-attention.test.ts to match its OAuth domain seed.
  • bun test ./tests/oauth/oauth-kiro-refresh-attention.test.ts ./tests/providers/kiro/kiro-oauth.test.ts ./tests/oauth/oauth-status-privacy.test.ts ./tests/oauth/oauth-reauth-bind.test.ts: 108 pass, 0 fail, including 18 new regressions. Covers expiry, still-valid access, non-refresh desktop input errors, unallowlisted codes, 5xx/network failures, matching/unrelated CLI recovery, failed desktop fallback, transient recovery, terminal-grant parity, replacement race, restart persistence, pause, successful recovery/explicit replacement clearing, and token-safe status API projection.
  • bun test ./tests/oauth/oauth-kiro-refresh-attention.test.ts ./tests/test-layout.test.ts ./tests/test-layout-tooling.test.ts: 33 pass, 0 fail (before three additional recovery/parity cases were added; the final focused command above includes those). Both layout maps include the test; layout.json remains 1,998 lines.
  • bun test ./tests/ci-workflows/file-size-ratchet.test.ts: 9 pass, 0 fail. No caps raised.
  • bun run typecheck: passed.
  • bun run structure:check: passed against the final staged change.
  • bun run privacy:scan: passed.
  • bun install --cwd docs-site --frozen-lockfile: passed, no lockfile changes.
  • bun run --cwd docs-site build: passed, 561 pages; internal link validation passed.
  • git diff --cached --check: passed.

The full local suite was not run under the bounded parallel-lane scope and shared-resource validation exception. Broader integration and cross-platform execution belong to the coordinator's final Cross-platform CI. Hosted CI was not awaited, cancelled or rerun. Writer security self-audit checked the response allowlist, identity-bound recovery, locked generation/config/pause fences, evidence clearing and token-safe status projection; independent security review remains required before integration.

Checklist

  • Scope stays focused and avoids unrelated cleanup.
  • Docs or release notes were updated when needed.
  • Security-sensitive changes were reviewed for secrets, auth, and unsafe defaults (writer self-audit; coordinator independent review remains a merge gate).

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Kiro accounts show that reauthentication is needed after an AWS SSO refresh is rejected with invalid_request and matching CLI credential recovery fails, but only after the access token expires. Accounts with a valid token remain logged in.
    • A successful automatic refresh clears this status. Network and server errors do not trigger it, and refresh attempts continue.
  • Documentation
    • Clarified Kiro refresh and reauthentication status behavior.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The Kiro OAuth refresh flow records attention for a specific AWS SSO 400 invalid_request response after CLI credential recovery fails. Status reports reauthentication after the matching access token expires. Successful refresh or credential replacement clears the evidence.

Changes

Kiro refresh attention

Layer / File(s) Summary
Classify rejection and attempt CLI recovery
src/oauth/kiro.ts, src/oauth/index.ts
The Kiro refresh error records attention only for an AWS SSO 400 invalid_request. Rotated CLI credential recovery preserves the original error when fallback returns an unrecognized 400. The refresh handler records attention for the matching credential generation.
Persist evidence and project status
src/oauth/types.ts, src/oauth/store.ts, src/oauth/index.ts, src/oauth/health.ts
The store ties attention evidence to a credential generation and clears it when credentials are replaced or refreshed. Kiro status and health project reauthentication after token expiry without setting the stored terminal flag.
Validate and document behavior
tests/oauth/oauth-kiro-refresh-attention.test.ts, scripts/test-layout/layout.json, tests/fixtures/test-layout-expected.json, docs-site/src/content/docs/guides/providers.md, structure/providers-and-adapters.md
Tests cover rejection cases, recovery, persistence, status, and clearing. Documentation describes the refresh-attention behavior, and the test-layout mappings include the new test.

P2 Badge Preserve attention after definitive fallback rejections

When the stored AWS SSO refresh returns the targeted 400 invalid_request, a matching rotated CLI credential is found, and the recovery endpoint then returns a definitive non-400 client rejection such as 401 or 403 without an allowlisted OAuth error body, this condition throws recoveryError and loses the original refreshAttention evidence. The generic refresh handler consequently records nothing, so even after expiration /api/oauth/status continues reporting the unusable account as logged in, contrary to the documented behavior for unsuccessful matching-CLI recovery. Preserve the original attention error for definitive recovery-side 4xx responses while continuing to exempt transient network, 429, and 5xx failures.

🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Reject attention from a refresh superseded by an identical-token login.

If an explicit login saves the same access token, refresh token, and expiry while an earlier refresh is pending, saveCredentialWithReceipt clears attention and rotates loginId. The earlier refresh can then fail. Its generation still matches at Line 1500, so this write restores attention for the new login. After expiry, status again reports needsReauth: true. Capture and check a credential-write revision alongside the generation. Rotate that revision on replacement, including identical-token replacement. Add a regression test that resolves the old refresh after the replacement.
