What was failing

rust-ci / Cargo check + clippy + fmt is red on every run, main included. Its most recent failure was on #106. The job dies in its first real step:

Run : parse toolchain version
'toolchain' is a required input
##[error]Process completed with exit code 1.

rust-ci.yml pins hyperpolymath/standards at d135b05b. At that commit, rust-ci-reusable.yml calls dtolnay/rust-toolchain by commit SHA and passes no toolchain: input. That action reads the toolchain from its @-ref (@stable). A SHA ref carries no version, so the step fails before any cargo command runs.

Why it came back

#45 already moved this pin past the breakage, to 412a7031. Then the 18 Aug merge of ci/fix-ossf-scorecard-startup (197735c) resolved the pin back to d135b05b, and the check has been red since.

The fix

Re-pin to standards@95de3dfc (current main). Its rust-ci-reusable.yml passes toolchain: stable in all four jobs.

That commit is safe to pin to. The standards scripts/lock-selfcheck.sh warns that a newer standards commit can be less usable when Dependabot bumps an action without regenerating actions.lock. So I checked by hand: every action ref rust-ci-reusable.yml names at 95de3dfc is keyed in that commit's actions.lock, under both workflows: and dependencies::

  • actions/checkout@3d3c42e5
  • dtolnay/rust-toolchain@e2a55d2f
  • goto-bus-stop/setup-zig@abea47f8
  • swatinem/rust-cache@6323deb1

Verified locally

The reusable's own commands, run on Rust 1.97 and on 1.99 (current stable, which CI installs). All pass:

  • cargo check --locked --all-targets
  • cargo fmt --all -- --check
  • cargo clippy --locked --all-targets -- -D warnings
  • cargo test --locked --all-targets

So once the toolchain installs, the job should go green, not trade one red for another.

Not in this PR

Fixes #105

The caller was pinned to standards@d135b05b, whose rust-ci-reusable runs
dtolnay/rust-toolchain by commit SHA without a `toolchain:` input. A SHA
ref carries no version, so the action's "parse toolchain version" step
fails with "'toolchain' is a required input" and `Cargo check + clippy +
fmt` has been red on every run, main included.

#45 fixed this once by moving to 412a7031, but the 18 Aug merge of
ci/fix-ossf-scorecard-startup resolved the pin back to d135b05b.

Re-pin to standards@95de3dfc (main HEAD), whose reusable passes
`toolchain: stable`. At that SHA every action ref the reusable names is
keyed in the same commit's actions.lock (workflows: and dependencies:),
so the callee validates at startup.

Verified locally on Rust 1.97 and 1.99 (current stable): cargo check
--locked, cargo fmt --check, cargo clippy --locked -D warnings and cargo
test --locked all pass.

Fixes #105

The rust-ci job now references a different reusable workflow commit. Comments state that the previous pin fails because toolchain is required and describe the replacement pin in relation to toolchain: stable.

Explanation

Issue #105 requires the rust-ci / Cargo check + clippy + fmt check to be fixed, retired, or accepted with a documented exemption. The PR changes .github/workflows/rust-ci.yml to the 95de3dfc reusable-workflow pin and reports local Rust command success. However, the PR explicitly does not show a green check on main after this change. It also provides no retirement decision or documented exemption. The linked issue therefore remains undetermined under its stated acceptance criteria.

…ate (#108)

## Why

`rust-ci / Cargo check + clippy + fmt` was red for a fortnight on every
PR (#105, fixed by the one-line re-pin
in #107). The red was a setup failure
read as a code failure: a SHA-pinned `dtolnay/rust-toolchain` given no
`toolchain:` input died before a compiler existed.
hyperpolymath/cicd-suite#54 built a Rust gate in which that class cannot
occur (the toolchain is resolved before any action runs and an empty
resolution is refused), made it stricter, and added a parallel Creusot
gate. This PR makes this repository a consumer of both.

## What

* `.github/workflows/rust-ci.yml` now calls
`hyperpolymath/cicd-suite/.github/workflows/rust-ci.yml@9a947fa`
(cicd-suite main, the merge of #54). The job id and the contexts
`rust-ci / Cargo check + clippy + fmt` and `rust-ci / Cargo test` are
unchanged, so existing branch rules keep matching. `rust-ci / Rust CI
verdict` is the context to require from now on: it goes red when any
gate failed **or was skipped while expected**.
* `.github/workflows/creusot-gate.yml`: the Rust deductive-verification
gate. This tree carries no Creusot obligations, so it reports a notice,
not assurance.
* `.github/workflows/track-estate-audit.yml`: weekly PR that moves every
cicd-suite pin here to cicd-suite HEAD, so a fix in the gate arrives as
a reviewable PR. Needs the `AUTOMATION_TOKEN` secret described in its
header to open PRs that trigger CI.

## What the stricter gate found, fixed at source

* **`cargo doc` with warnings denied**: three doc comments in
`plasma-parser/src/zone/boundary.rs` wrote `[project]`, `[[zone]]` and
`[family]` as bare brackets, which rustdoc reads as unresolved intra-doc
links. They are code spans now.
* **The declared MSRV was false**: `rust-version = "1.74"` while a
dependency needs edition 2024. Verified: `cargo +1.78 check --locked`
fails on `edition2024`; `cargo +1.85 check --locked` passes. The gate's
MSRV job builds the declared version, so the declaration now says 1.85.

## Evidence

Run locally on rustc 1.97 against this tree: `cargo fmt --check`, `cargo
clippy --all-targets --locked -D warnings`, `cargo test --locked
--all-targets`, `cargo test --locked --doc`, and `cargo doc --no-deps
--document-private-items` with `RUSTDOCFLAGS=-D warnings` all pass;
`cargo +1.85 check --workspace --locked` passes.

## Not yet witnessed live

This is the first cross-repository call of the cicd-suite Rust gate
since GitHub began validating a called workflow against the callee
repository's `actions.lock` (around 2026-10-15). cicd-suite's gate
workflows are deliberately not keyed in cicd-suite's own lock. If this
PR's `rust-ci` run dies at `Set up job` with "invalid lockfile pin" or a
workflow-file error, the fix belongs in cicd-suite (key the gate
workflows in its lock), not here, and I will report it on this PR.
