Page loads: self-hosted font, caching that survives deploys, and a check that pages load only what they show - #66
Conversation
… caching headers - Open Sans: the ten variable-weight woff2 files Google served (one per character set, each with its unicode-range, so a page downloads only what its text uses) and their OFL licence under resources/public/fonts/open-sans/, as @font-face rules in Garden (styles.core/open-sans-faces). The page no longer loads anything from Google, so the security policy no longer allows Google's hosts; both policy files say what to add back. - The page links the bundle, the stylesheet and the cookie notice's files with ?v= their content stamp (index/asset-url), so a new build has a new address and a deploy reaches returning visitors at once. - pedestal/static-cache-interceptor, first in the chain ahead of the static file handler, sends Cache-Control: a year (immutable) for stamped files, a week for images, fonts and vendored assets, recheck for unstamped compiled files; nothing in dev mode. Fail state: static-cache-test, with the one-year rule broken: 3 failures. page_load_budget_e2e, with the interceptor removed: all 54 static files the builder loads carried no max-age.
page_load_budget_e2e opens 18 pages signed out and signed in and fails on any request a page's allowance does not list (the shared app shell plus each page's own data, every entry with its reason). It also checks that the spells page loads no rules or conditions, that opening the Orcacle loads each once and opening it again loads nothing, that every static file the builder loads carries a max-age, that Open Sans loads at 400, 600 and 700, and that the compressed app bundle stays under its budget (820,778 bytes on 2026-10-15, plus 5%). PAGE_LOAD_AUDIT=1 prints what every page loads instead of judging. Fail states: on integration's code every page failed on the Google Fonts requests and the combat tracker on two lists not yet allowed; with an eager rules load added at start-up, all 34 page loads and the spells check failed; with the budget set below the bundle, the budget check failed. Three consecutive runs: 42/42.

Merge Risk:
Low · previous review 66026
-
The page-load check could miss an asset with no useful browser cache lifetime. This is a bounded test improvement, not an observed delivery failure.
Security architecture risk:
Moderate · up to 66026
-
The new shared cache can retain attacker-chosen page addresses without a size limit. Unauthenticated requests could therefore accumulate server memory. Moving fonts on-site narrows external access, but does not address this availability risk.
Retained concerns
- Medium · security · inferred: The site-wide interceptor memoizes attacker-controlled nonasset URI identities before determining whether they are static assets. Public parameterized page GETs with a v= parameter can retain distinct missing-resource results indefinitely, creating an unauthenticated memory-growth path in each application process. This state and exposure are introduced by the PR.
Security review details
-
Security Blast Radius
- inferred — The memory-growth path requires no account or write privilege and affects shared application-process availability, potentially disrupting all visitors served by an affected process. Multiple processes would have independent caches; actual instance count and edge controls are unknown. The inspected path does not establish data disclosure or privilege escalation.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
- inferred — An anonymous caller can vary a parameterized public page URI while including v= in each request. The page handler returns 200, the interceptor looks up the nonexistent public resource, and memoization retains the URI and nil result before the policy rejects the page as nonstatic. Distinct URIs accumulate without an application-level bound. Changing only the query string on one URI does not create additional keys.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
- observed — Long-lived immutable caching requires comparison with the resource’s own content stamp rather than merely accepting any v= value. This protects cache lifetime selection, but does not authorize or bound the earlier transition from request-controlled URI to shared memoized state.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
- inferred — Memoized entries persist without visible eviction or reset in the new cache declaration. Repeated lookup of one URI is bounded to one key, while distinct successful URI identities remain retained. Process replacement clears this in-memory state, but request completion and static-policy rejection do not clean it up.
Hardening Proposals
- proposed — Restrict stamp lookup to eligible public assets before touching shared state, and bound any request-reachable cache, including negative results. Validate that distinct dynamic page requests cannot grow the stamp cache while preserving current-versus-stale asset behavior.

The server holds only the current build, so a request for an old ?v= got the new file marked immutable for a year under the old address, in the browser and at Cloudflare. A request whose ?v= matches the file's content stamp is kept a year; any other ?v= is rechecked (no-cache). The stamp function moves to orcpub.pedestal, where both the cache rule and index/asset-url use it. From CodeRabbit's review of #66. The new test failed on the code before this: a stale stamp was given the one-year rule.

An error page loads little, so it passed the request allowance. Each page's HTTP status is now checked first. With a missing page added, the old test passed it; this one fails it with HTTP 404. From CodeRabbit's review of #66.

cookies.js added its own link to /css/cookiestyles.css, which the page already links; once the page's link carried a content stamp the two addresses differed and every page fetched the file twice. The page's link is the only one now. Found by the page-load test's new request counts.
From CodeRabbit's review of #66. Each allowed request may happen once per page load unless its allowance gives more; the signed-in pages run only after the browser holds a session; opening the Orcacle must get both files back successfully, not just ask for them. Each was seen failing: the count on the real app (the cookie stylesheet fetched twice), the login with a wrong password, the Orcacle with the rules file answering 404.

system.clj: kept all three interceptors (static caching, portrait guard, client address; client address stays first). index.clj: kept integration's hiccup 2 h/raw with this branch's stamped asset links and self-hosted font (its faces cover weights 400-700, so the Google link stays out). CHANGELOG.md: kept both. lein test 1264 passed, cljs suite 828 passed, full lein lint 0 errors. page_load_budget_e2e.js: 10 of 106 fail on requests integration added since 2026-10-17 (not merged yet; allowances to be settled).
…rtists bug The budget test printed bundle 870 KB and 10 failures after the integration merge. Fixes: - bundle: hard ceiling 900 KB compressed; size and headroom print on every run. - allowances: my account (/user twice), my content (items); a page's own entry now sets the limit before the shell's. - portrait-artists: allowed as a known bug naming #65, removed when its fix lands. Before: FAIL character builder (signed out|in) ... [2x image GET /image/orcpub-logo.svg]; FAIL my account (signed in) ... [2x xhr GET /user]. After: E2E RESULT PASS checks=116 failed=0.
The portrait placeholder paints the logo with CSS mask-image, a CORS-mode fetch, so the plain header img could not share it and the builder requested orcpub-logo.svg twice.
