test(aisimulate): exercise DGD outputs through real CLI cases - #17588
Test that a real AISimulate search produces correct Dynamo deployment files: search → selected Candidate → DGD output adapter → YAML. The mocked success tests we replace could miss failures between those steps.
Current layout: 4 dedicated DGD cases under components/src/dynamo/aisimulate/tests/dgd/e2e/; the original 19 Replay cases are unchanged.
Add real end-to-end coverage. Four CLI scenarios cover aggregated, disaggregated, router/Kustomize, and Pareto output. Check generated DGDs and Frontend router settings against selected Candidates; compare two complete YAML goldens.
Remove redundant mocks and helpers. Keep focused error, backend, and atomicity tests. The manual comparison runner matches known failures against real diagnostics and preserves live logs.
Review output changes individually. Changed goldens produce .new.yaml proposals and unified diffs in failure logs. Original files stay untouched; each change needs explicit review and acceptance.
Actually run the suite in CI. Copy AISimulate tests into the Planner test image. Rename the DGDR Run adapter suite to test_dgdr_run_adapter.py so pytest cannot silently substitute the DGD adapter module.
Validation
Linux ARM64 Planner environment, Python 3.13 and main's AISimulate nightly 87: 175 passed in 24.27s, zero skipped, using the CI selector pre_merge and planner and gpu_0 with -n 2 --dist=loadscope.
Joint collection verifies 24 DGD + 68 DGDR Run tests, unique node IDs and matching module paths. Both lifecycle cases (complete, failure) are collected and executed exactly once; they also pass explicitly. Before the rename, pytest loaded the DGD module twice and omitted the DGDR Run suite.
Regression probes cover shared-search behavior, missing inputs, CI-visible golden diffs and 18 router-output mutations. Repository hooks and independent reviews pass; reviewed goldens remain unchanged.
Issues and Ongoing Work
Part of #13545; refs DGH-1426. Unrelated Profiler/Replay import cleanup is separate in #17594.
Fix the adapter-suite collection collision moved from #17308; the rename preserves all existing test contents.
The changes update the manual DGD comparison runner, revise DGD materialization tests, and add unified CLI recommendation cases that generate and validate DGD artifacts against selected YAML goldens.
Changes
Manual comparison corpus
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Render-only corpus and recipe scope components/src/dynamo/aisimulate/tests/dgd/comparison/{DESIGN.md,README.md,run_cases.py,testsuite-issue-8469.yaml}
The comparison runner and suite remove deployment variants and related recipe-discovery behavior. Recipe files are described as provenance for human comparison. The documentation identifies the corpus as manual and points to the CLI end-to-end tests for automatic Recommend-to-DGD coverage.
Broken exceptions can specify a regex, and failures count as expected only when the message matches it. Sweeper search errors use a matching case-wide exception. Tests cover matching and non-matching failures.
DGD materialization tests
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Direct materializer candidate arguments components/src/dynamo/aisimulate/tests/dgd/test_renderer_direct.py
Tests assert candidate-derived arguments for aggregated and disaggregated backends, including tensor-parallel width and TRT-LLM attention-DP values.
Shared finalizer and adapter tests components/src/dynamo/aisimulate/tests/dgd/{test_renderers.py,test_adapter.py}
Renderer tests use the shared DGD finalizer and check manifest preservation. Adapter tests retain validation coverage and remove assertions for configuration defaults and Pareto output materialization.
Test collection and imports components/src/dynamo/aisimulate/tests/dgd/{test_adapter.py,test_renderer_direct.py}, components/src/dynamo/profiler/tests/{integration/test_profile_sla_dgdr.py,unit/test_dgd_generation_ais.py,unit/test_dgd_materialization.py}, conftest.py, tests/report_pytest_markers.py
DGD and profiler tests skip outside Python 3.11–3.13 and import project modules directly. Test startup and marker reporting include AISimulate modules.
Unified CLI DGD end-to-end coverage
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Recommendation configurations and DGD goldens components/src/dynamo/replay/tests/e2e/configs/unified_cli/recommend/dynamo/*.yaml, components/src/dynamo/replay/tests/e2e/configs/unified_cli/goldens/dgd/*.yaml
Recommendation cases add DGD output settings for aggregated, disaggregated, router, and Pareto runs. Two deployment YAML files provide golden outputs.
CLI artifact validation and golden updates components/src/dynamo/replay/tests/e2e/test_unified_cli_dynamo.py, components/src/dynamo/replay/tests/e2e/configs/unified_cli/README.md
The end-to-end tests request DGD output when configured and validate generated artifacts against candidates and selected goldens. The README documents test scope and golden regeneration.
The CLI DGD cases have no established artifact-contract mismatch. Two bounded test-workflow gaps remain: expected profiler failures cannot be matched by their diagnostics, and some Python 3.14 tests are skipped. These can be addressed before merge or accepted as follow-up work.

Explanation
The title "test(aisimulate): exercise DGD outputs through real CLI cases" matches the main change: the PR adds real DGD output coverage to the existing CLI E2E table and removes mocked success tests. It is specific, follows a conventional-commit style, and does not describe unrelated work.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the template sections (Overview, Key Changes, Validation, Issues and Ongoing Work) and gives specific, substantive content. It states the goal: a real AISimulate search that checks search, selected Candidate, DGD output adapter, and YAML. It lists four new CLI cases, the removal of redundant mocks, a manual comparison runner, and a CI change that renames the DGDR Run adapter suite. The Validation section gives concrete results: 175 tests passed on Python 3.13 with zero skipped, and the joint collection counts. It links the work to #13545 and DGH-1426, and it notes that the Profiler/Replay import cleanup is in #17594. The pull request checklist is checked. The template's Closes # line is not used. The PR says it is part of #13545, so it does not close that issue. This is acceptable, but the template's issue-link line is not filled in the way the template expects. The advisory PR Issue Link check is not yet required, so this is minor.

8882d1970b: the Direct evaluation-context test now uses the existing local tiny-model fixture and real finalization, without metadata lookup mocks. The old test failed with an empty offline Hub cache; the fixed module passes with that same cache.
01df0c4a47: profiler stdout/stderr streams live while retaining diagnostics for matching. Python child output is unbuffered; forwarding/read exceptions kill and reap the child before propagating.
Validation: 40 affected tests passed in 3.53s with an empty offline cache, zero skipped. Real-child handshakes prove stdout/stderr is forwarded before exit; the cleanup case proves termination/reaping on output failure. These failure paths were reproduced before the fixes. Pinned hooks and the independent final review pass. The slide remains in the PR description.
Isolated the DGD scope in 02340b278d: all four real CLI DGD cases, input YAML, model metadata and individually reviewable goldens now live under components/src/dynamo/aisimulate/tests/dgd/e2e/. This PR has zero Replay or Profiler diff. The required-import cleanup is preserved separately in #17594.
The Planner test image now copies the complete AISimulate test tree into /workspace for normal pytest discovery. Validation: the full AISimulate tree passed (99 tests, zero skipped) and the unchanged original Replay table passed (19 tests, zero skipped), with fresh offline caches. Seven golden/proposal probes, pinned hooks, and an independent review passed. Two goldens were regenerated through the real CLI; only their relocated model paths changed.
Removed the obsolete Performance review request. DGD test paths already allow Planner OR Operator approval; Ops/Runtime still own the small shared pytest/test-image plumbing changes. No ownership policy was changed.

[P3] New: the comparison runner loses the only tests for two properties that its README states. test_case_runner.py:485
Open item from the checklist of this PR: give dgdr_run/test_adapter.py a unique name. main got that file from #17308. container/Dockerfile.test copies the whole tests folder, so after a rebase the planner test image holds both dgd/test_adapter.py and dgdr_run/test_adapter.py for one pytest session.
The block-size item from #17308: all four CLI cases set block_size: 64, so no case runs the unset vLLM path, and this PR does not change that item. Without the block size, the aggregated case fails with candidate.config.agg_block_size must be a positive integer.

AISimulate test tree, in the planner test image that CI built from this head, with AISimulate 0.13.0.dev202610280000000086 and --network none
99 passed, 0 failed and 0 skipped, in two runs of 41.3 s and 41.8 s. The four CLI cases take 6 to 11 s each.
Writes outside the pytest temp folder
Only /workspace/.benchmarks from pytest-benchmark, and files in the system temp folder. Each CLI subprocess leaves logging-configuration JSON files in /tmp, 24 per run.
Goldens
A changed value in goldens/aggregated.yaml fails the case, writes aggregated.new.yaml and leaves the golden unchanged. A deliberate break that sets the Frontend replicas to 2 in the adapter fails both golden cases. The router and Pareto cases still pass, because they have no golden. After each restore, the cases pass.
conftest.py
import aisimulate takes 0.0154 s cold and 0.0004 s after the other imports. It makes no network call, changes no environment variable, logging or warning setting, starts no thread and writes no file. Without AISimulate, unrelated tests collect as on main. If the AISimulate import raises an error that is not an ImportError, every pytest session now stops at conftest load. The exit code is 4, and the comment in conftest.py describes this.
Without AISimulate
test_dgd_cli.py, dgd/test_adapter.py, test_renderer_direct.py and test_renderers.py now fail at collection instead of skipping. None of the 10 test jobs on this head that this review read reports a collection error.
tests/report_pytest_markers.py
The two new names exist in the pinned wheel, and every module-level AISimulate import in these tests has a stub.
Removed tests
Each removed case has a replacement test, except the two runner tests in the P3 item and the namespace test in test_renderers.py. If no namespace is set, no renderer emits one, so that branch has no current effect.
Merge with main
02340b278d conflicts with maineeda105a01 in components/src/dynamo/aisimulate/tests/dgd/test_renderers.py. main now pins 0.13.0.dev202610290000000087 through #17523. This review ran only ...0086.
CI on 02340b278d at 18:28Z
142 checks: 93 passed, 49 were skipped, and none failed or still ran. planner / CPU Test ran 99 AISimulate tests on amd64 and on arm64, all passed. Both dynamo-runtime / test / parallel jobs ran 85 of them, all passed.
Preserve the merged Profiler/Replay imports and current trace-rendering coverage after rebasing. Remove the redundant E2E module docstring requested in review.

Rebased onto 67b5ff2551 (including merged #17308). AISimulate nightly 87 is inherited from main; this PR does not change the pin.
97767410ca fixes the adapter collection collision with a byte-for-byte rename. Joint collection now loads 24 DGD + 68 DGDR Run tests, with unique node IDs and the correct module file for every item. Before the rename, pytest loaded the DGD tests twice and omitted the Run suite. Both pinned lifecycle cases (complete, failure) are collected and executed exactly once, including a separate explicit run.
672b734a56 retains the comparison runner's shared-search/Candidate contract in the existing failure table and validates paired corpus inputs. Isolated probes catch extra searches, copied Candidates and a missing input.
Final Linux ARM64 Planner validation with main's pin and the CI selector (pre_merge and planner and gpu_0, -n 2 --dist=loadscope): 175 passed in 22.93s, zero skipped. Hooks and independent reviews pass. The Planner test-image COPY includes the renamed suite; reviewed goldens are unchanged. All 14 PR commits are Verified, and all review threads are resolved. No serving, Operator or Kubernetes API changes.
Full CI is queued for the current head: PR pipeline.

[P3] The comparison runner loses the only tests for one search per case and for paired suite inputs. The suggestion on test_case_runner.py:485 restores both.
The checklist of this PR tracks a unique name for dgdr_run/test_adapter.py. main got that file from #17308. container/Dockerfile.test copies the whole tests folder, so after a rebase the planner test image holds both test_adapter.py files for one pytest session.

Measured on this head: the AISimulate test tree in the planner test image (99 passed, twice) and the golden proposal flow. The review also measured the conftest import cost, its failure modes and the coverage of each removed test. Not run: black, and the tests at pin ...0087.
Preserve individually reviewable adjacent proposals while including a unified diff in pytest failure output, so CI does not depend on container files.

Compare the selected Candidate router policy and load controls with the generated Frontend environment. Require the adapter and one Frontend so missing output cannot bypass the assertions.
