Why and what changed

Dynamo's Planner tunes its AIS forward-pass model online (tune_with_fpms).
Planner retune replays recorded traffic in separately spawned AISimulate-backed
replays, whose engine timing is built in Rust through
ForwardPassPerfModel::best_available from a JSON config. Configuration only
rebuilds a cold model, so those replays could not use the tuned model.

This PR adds a state snapshot that any model kind can save and that both the
wheel and the Rust crate restore, bit-for-bit, through the existing canonical
constructor:

  • Save: ForwardPassPerfModel::save_state_snapshot(path, &StateSnapshotOptions) /
    RustForwardPassPerfModel.save_state_snapshot(path, *, include_perf_db=False) atomically
writes a new directory (staged next to it; every staged file and directory is
fsynced, then renamed into place and the parent synced, best effort) and returns the pinned
    canonical configuration (also path/config.json).
  • Restore: only best_available(config); Python adds
best_available(state_snapshot=path), which reads config.json and calls the same Rust
constructor; path must be the directory the snapshot was saved to
(os.path.samefile), otherwise ValueError. The canonical field is
    estimator_config.state_snapshot = {path, sha256, on_tune: reject|continue};
normalization makes path absolute lexically (std::path::absolute, ./..
removed, symlinks kept, as for fpm_learned paths, so a mount alias stays
valid) and pins sha256 to manifest.json read with a size bound.
  • Format: manifest.json (schema v1, state_layout_version 1, producer
    aisimulate_core_version + engine_spec_schema_version + encoding, kind,
pinned identity, diagnostics, per-store readiness, file digests),
config.json, state.bin (bincode 1 fixint, bounded, trailing bytes
    rejected), plus kind-specific files.
  • Kinds (all 10 state shapes plus from_learned): native op_level /
    fpm_interpolation / execution_profile with fixed, dynamic-local or hybrid
correction; regression linear (incl. error threshold), selected D=1..6,
spline periodic/adaptive; learned frozen (artifact bytes copied, or the
checkpoint forest exported unchanged); learned online (v5 runtime checkpoint
inside the snapshot); causal selector (frozen expert, adaptive runtime
checkpoint, every calibration store and all 12 selector keys, which the
standalone checkpoint/export APIs still reject); from_learned (forest,
options and corrections under a documented placeholder identity, restored
    without identity checks).
  • Native data: the manifest records the EngineSpec digest captured when
the engine was built (new Engine::spec_sha256; every data location excluded,
including the parquet path the Python compiler embeds in
extra.estimator_config) and the performance-data fingerprint taken when the
process first loaded that systems root (memoized per root, system and external
parquet, so a sweep hashes once per process). Taking it (and the restore
check) stops sharing tables that other engines in the process parsed earlier
for that root and system, because the shared table memo is keyed by paths,
not content. The fingerprint follows loader semantics: top-level files, the
data_dir joined onto the root verbatim (so .. follows symlinks; directories
included, a missing one recorded as absent, dangling links recorded unread,
dot-prefixed and non-UTF-8 names skipped like every resolver listing) and an
external fpm_parquet_path with its sidecar. save_state_snapshot recomputes it and fails
if the data changed since load; restore verifies the data on disk before
loading any of it and also rejects a process that loaded the root before it
changed. include_perf_db=True packs exactly the fingerprinted entries
(directories, links, external parquet and sidecar) and repoints
systems_paths/fpm_parquet_path. The hardware YAML is copied unchanged, so
packing requires a data_dir of plain relative names; one with .., an
absolute path or outside the root can be referenced but not packed.
  • Replay: engine replay's AIC timing applies a tuned model's online correction
(a restored snapshot's) to every prefill and decode phase it prices from the native
engine, identically with and without capture_performance_diagnostics; before,
decode applied it only while capturing and prefill never did. Phase-only timing
uses the pure prefill and decode corrections; operation evidence and energy scale
with the factor, so power is unchanged. Untuned models skip the lookup.
  • Fail closed: explicit estimation_mode and fallback_policy: deny are
required; manifest/file digests, versions (read from a lenient header first, so
a newer manifest reports its version rather than an unknown field), typed
identity, engine spec and perf data must match; recorded sizes are checked
before reading; decoded state is validated against stores freshly built from
the configuration (no panics on corrupt input); from_learned restores from the
verified bytes; restored diagnostics must match. on_tune: reject makes tuning
an error; continue resumes exactly. Snapshot I/O errors are
AicError::StateSnapshotIo, raised in Python as OSError subclasses through
both state_snapshot= and config=, never the skippable PerfDataNotAvailableError.
  • Replay gates (Rust + Python, read-only): readiness_report() (per-store
estimation readiness with reasons and correction readiness, all kinds),
deployment_topology(), inspect_state_snapshot(path) (no model load), and
    EngineLaunchConfig::timing_config_mismatches / engine_launch_mismatches,
which run launch's own input validation first (invalid inputs raise launch's
message) and then return every identity conflict; an empty list means launch
    accepts.

Review map

  • Risk level: medium (new serialized contract; perf-model construction path)
  • Start with:
    • crates/core/src/perfmodel/fpm/model_snapshot.rs (save_state_snapshot, restore,
      check_state, causal-selector and from_learned restoration)
    • crates/core/src/perfmodel/fpm/snapshot.rs and snapshot/perf_db.rs
(manifest, version gate, atomic stage, fingerprint/pack)
    • the validate_restored / restore_snapshot invariants in samples.rs,
      correction.rs, dynamic_correction.rs, regression*.rs, spline*.rs,
      selector.rs, combined.rs
    • model.rs: best_available → select split, require_tunable,
      readiness_report, deployment_topology
  • Public or serialized contract changed: yes — new estimator_config.state_snapshot
field (omitted when absent, so existing configs serialize unchanged); new
    snapshot directory format; new public Rust types/functions and Python methods;
    best_available and config_engine_launch_mismatches gain keyword state_snapshot=; new Engine::spec_sha256 (internal);
new AicError::StateSnapshotIo variant (AicError is not #[non_exhaustive],
so exhaustive downstream matches need an arm).
  • Compatibility or rollback concern: snapshots load only in the same
aisimulate-core version (crate and wheel must match), and state.bin is
positional — any encoded-type change must bump STATE_SNAPSHOT_LAYOUT_VERSION
(guarded by an independent layout decoder test). Older binaries reject the new
config field as unknown (fail closed).
  • Known limitations: snapshots embed absolute paths and restore only from their
saved directory; native restoration recompiles through Python (python
feature); the load-time fingerprint memo lives for the process, so after the
data under a loaded root changes, that process can neither save nor restore
native snapshots of the root until it restarts (fails closed with a message
saying so); online learner state is always saved (≈194 MB for a 150-tree gym
forest); fpm_interpolation is covered with synthetic external parquets
    (fixed / dynamic-local / hybrid), not a production profile; from_learned
    snapshots use the placeholder identity from_learned/from_learned/vllm;
launch compatibility reuses only the rules launch enforces (KV block size and
correction limits are reported by deployment_topology() but not checked).

Evidence

  • Tests (local, head 9c30895c7; review fixes in 43c0e80a3..9c30895c7 on top of
35bf1c58f; Python env rebuilt from that head with
uv sync --project python/aisimulate --extra dev --reinstall-package aisimulate):
    • cargo test --workspace — 2,519 passed, 0 failed, 1 ignored (19 binaries).
      Snapshot tests: cargo test -p aisimulate-core --lib -- fpm::model::persist fpm::snapshot
      selects 35 (28 round-trip/fail-closed tests in fpm::model::persist::tests, 5
fingerprint/pack tests in fpm::snapshot::perf_db, 2 codec tests); launch helper
tests are engine::launch (3), the spec digest test is
content_digest_ignores_every_data_location. (A bare cargo test snapshot filter
      misses the persist module.)
    • cargo test --manifest-path crates/tests/public-api/Cargo.toml — 21 passed
    • pytest -c python/aisimulate/pytest.ini python/aisimulate/tests/unit/sdk/test_fpm_state_snapshot.py
      — 19 passed (1 integration: native Qwen3-32B/h200, cross-process)
    • Python unit suite from python/aisimulate (empty global git config,
      PYTHONPATH=., -n 8): 12,227 passed, 30 skipped, 3 failed, all
environmental (scikit-learn not installed; two test_support_cli.py subprocess
tests need an absolute PYTHONPATH and pass with PYTHONPATH=$(pwd))
    • pytest crates/core/parity_tests/perfmodel/test_engine_step_parity.py crates/core/parity_tests/perfmodel/test_compile_engine_parity.py — 389 passed,
      goldens untouched
    • cargo clippy --workspace --all-targets and the same with --features python —
      0 new diagnostics vs 63f6074a5 (133 and 134 file/message diagnostics before and
after, identical multisets); cargo fmt --check; rustfmt (edition 2021) of the new
      public-api test; ruff check/format; check_copyright.py (1,635 files);
check_documentation_links.py (81 Markdown files); git diff --check — clean
    • Every commit builds: 43c0e80a3 checked alone (cargo check -p aisimulate-core --all-targets --features python on an exported tree); later commits change only
Python and docs after 36f645707, whose crates equal the head's.
  • Cross-process evidence (fresh interpreter, different PYTHONHASHSEED, compared by
exact float bits and state-file bytes against the uninterrupted model):
regression spline (agg/decode), error threshold, selected (A, M, n), learned frozen
    • hybrid, from_learned, learned online and causal selector (decode; both roles
in-process in Rust) with default learner settings (structural rebuilds asserted
before the save), fpm_interpolation with an
external parquet and no data_dir under fixed / dynamic-local / hybrid correction,
native op_level h200 packed restore, packed fpm_interpolation restore after the
source parquet changed, a fresh process saving after a data change that the
loading process must refuse, an op_level model built (and a snapshot restored)
after another engine in the process parsed the original tables and the data
changed, a reference restore of a data_dir spelled with .., and replay of a
restored fixed snapshot (one 512-in/3-out request) with diagnostics on and off,
identical to each other and slower than the untuned model in TTFT, TTST and
      end-to-end latency (the review's TTST 7.125 vs 14.25 ms reproduced on 9350006b5).
  • Fast CI: pending on 5545f21ba (replay corrections, Linux-only non-UTF-8 test); 9350006b5 had the first review fixes; 69fe9893f renamed to_file to save_state_snapshot and file= to state_snapshot=; 9c30895c7 failed only the cross-package best_available signature contract, updated in 7d668c4b3
  • Full CI: not run
  • CodeRabbit reviewed commits: 9c30895c7 (3 inline findings fixed in 7d668c4b3), 7d668c4b3 (docs finding fixed in d7312fe8f; post-construction re-hash declined because tables load lazily), d7312fe8f (2 outside-diff docs findings fixed in 7742fc3c9) and 7742fc3c9 (from_learned relocation docs fixed in f1e433ba9)
  • Codex reviewed commit: pending
  • Human review (diffractiongoo) on 69fe9893f: 3 P2 findings (cached-table provenance,
packed data_dir resolution, learned-member I/O classification), each reproduced
against that build and fixed in 9350006b5
  • Human review (simone-chen) on 9350006b5: replay applying restored corrections only
with diagnostics (major) and the non-UTF-8 test on macOS (minor), fixed in 5545f21ba
  • Negative or boundary cases: digest/version/identity mismatches (error names the
first differing field), newer manifests with extra fields (version reported),
    auto/allow/legacy fallback rejected, truncated / trailing / byte-flipped state,
recorded size u64::MAX and a sparse 4 GiB + 1 state file rejected before reading,
    a sparse 64 MiB + 1 manifest, declared lengths beyond the bytes, a continue-mode
corruption fuzz (restore, query, tune, report, re-save) for every kind and for the
online checkpoint behind re-pinned digests (no panics), bucket key out of range
or wrong, totals, bounds, dynamic rows outside bounds and cached-factor drift,
spline knot count/order and clocks, store kinds/order, selector evidence, foreign
state kind, engine spec change, perf-data change/addition/removal and new empty
version directories, external parquet and sidecar changes, data changed after load
(save refused; restore refused in that process), dangling links, non-UTF-8 and
dot-prefixed names (the non-UTF-8 fixture on Linux only), ./ and .. and absolute data_dir (.. through a symlink
and a missing intermediate directory resolved like the loader), packing rejected
for .., absolute and outside data_dir, packed-copy tamper, tampered learned and
online-checkpoint files, a missing learned artifact or online-checkpoint manifest
    (FileNotFoundError, never PerfDataNotAvailableError),
copied snapshot passed as state_snapshot=, symlink alias accepted, missing snapshot
(FileNotFoundError through state_snapshot=, config= and inspection), a destination
below a regular file (OSError), existing destination, missing provenance, invalid launch
    inputs (dp_size: 0, tensor_parallel_size: 0, gpu_memory_utilization: 2.0,
    startup_time: -1).
  • Expected-value derivation: none of the assertions recompute production math;
every check compares a restored model with the uninterrupted original on the
same inputs (f64::to_bits, errors included). Cold controls compare estimates
only: the tuned model must differ from an untuned model at save time and from a
model fed only the continuation afterwards (diagnostics and counts excluded).
training_state_bytes (allocation) and history_grouping_ms (load wall clock,
serde-skipped) are the only online diagnostics excluded from equality.
  • Before/after output: on the recorded Dynamo planner stream (calls3000, 1,698
calls, 63 tunes) every variant restored bit-exactly in-process and continued
bit-exactly in a fresh process with byte-identical final state. Rows marked v2
were rerun on this head with estimate-only cold controls; for dedicated roles each
filtered tune is preceded by an estimate of its first iteration, so their tails
carry estimates. v1 rows (online learner, causal selector, 62-tune runs) were not
rerun; their v1 cold control compared every call, including diagnostics.

Save ≈ 30 ms for KB snapshots (fsync of every staged file and directory
included), ≈ 0.10 s native (includes re-fingerprinting the 18 MB h200 data),
0.95 s for 194 MB learner state (v1, measured before every staged file was
fsynced); restore ≈ 1 ms regression, ≈ 0.09 s native
(fingerprint check plus in-process table cache), 1.0 s online learner.
Load-time fingerprint cost (Qwen3-32B/h200 op_level, two fresh processes): first
best_available 0.96–1.0 s including compilation and the one-time fingerprint,
second and third 0.010 s (memo hit, no rehash); save_state_snapshot 0.095 s including the
re-fingerprint. The one-time cost is bounded by that save time, not measured
separately.

Modeling or data provenance

N/A for timing values: no operator, table, interpolation or selection rule
changes; parity goldens are untouched. The probe stream is a recorded Dynamo
planner session (calls3000.pkl, regression agg, unprofiled); native rows
reuse its FPMs against Qwen3-32B/h200 op_level; learned rows use the gym
150x15 fpm5 seed. Sizes are measurements of this branch, not projections.

Two building blocks for restoring saved forward-pass models in replay.

A compiled Engine keeps no spec bytes, so a digest taken at save time
would only describe whatever the saving process recompiles. Engine now
records EngineSpec::content_sha256() when it is built: the SHA-256 of the
bincode wire encoding with the storage locations (systems_path,
fpm_parquet_path) cleared, so a relocated copy of the same data compiles
to the same digest while any change to the op graph or identity does not.

EngineLaunchConfig::validate stops at the first conflict between the
engine arguments and a canonical AIS timing identity. The same rules now
live in timing_identity_mismatches, and timing_config_mismatches applies
them to launch arguments with a given timing configuration substituted,
deriving omitted dp_size, tensor_parallel_size and aic_nextn exactly as
launch does. It returns every conflict, so callers such as a Dynamo
retune gate can check a saved model against engine args without copying
the rules. Launch validation keeps its existing first-error messages.

Dynamo's planner tunes its AIS perf model online, and retune replays run in
separate processes that must time candidates with that tuned model.
Configuration alone rebuilds a cold model, so tuned state had no route
from one process to another.

ForwardPassPerfModel::to_file(path, options) atomically writes a new
directory (staged next to it, then renamed) and returns the pinned
canonical configuration, also written to config.json. Restoration has no
new constructor: best_available restores whenever
estimator_config.state_snapshot {path, sha256, on_tune} is present.
Normalization canonicalizes path and pins sha256 to manifest.json; the
manifest pins every other file and records the aisimulate-core version,
state layout version 1, engine spec schema, kind, the pinned identity,
diagnostics and per-store readiness.

state.bin (bincode 1 fixint, bounded, trailing bytes rejected) holds every
field tune_with_fpms mutates, so restored models predict bit-identically
and continue tuning to byte-identical state, across processes:
- native op_level / fpm_interpolation: correction stores (fixed, dynamic
local, hybrid); the engine is recompiled and must match the spec digest
recorded at construction and a content fingerprint of the systems root
(top-level files plus the system data_dir), optionally packed into the
  snapshot; execution profiles are copied;
- regression linear (incl. error threshold), selected D=1..6 and spline
  (periodic/adaptive): samples, fits, statistics and clocks;
- learned frozen: the forest (exact artifact bytes, or the checkpoint
  forest exported unchanged) plus correction stores;
- learned online: a v5 runtime checkpoint written with its source paths
  cleared so identical state writes identical bytes;
- causal selector: frozen expert, adaptive runtime checkpoint, every
calibration store and all selector keys (standalone checkpoints still
  reject it);
- from_learned: forest, constructor options and corrections under a
placeholder identity, restored without identity checks.

Restoration fails closed: explicit mode and fallback deny are required;
digests, versions, typed identity, engine spec and perf data must match;
decoded state is validated against stores freshly built from the
configuration (bucket keys and bounds, totals, dynamic rows and recomputed
factors, spline knots and clocks, store kinds and order, selector
evidence) so corrupt input is an error instead of a panic; restored
diagnostics must equal the saved ones. on_tune=reject makes tuning an
error; continue resumes exactly.

readiness_report() adds per-store estimation readiness (with not-ready
reasons) and correction readiness for every kind; deployment_topology()
and inspect_state_snapshot() expose identity and readiness for gates
without loading a model.

RustForwardPassPerfModel.to_file(path, *, include_perf_db=False) saves the
complete tuned state and returns the pinned configuration as a dict.
best_available(config=None, *, file=None) takes exactly one of them; file
reads the snapshot's config.json and passes it unchanged to the same Rust
constructor, so there is no Python-side construction logic or default.

Gates for replaying a saved model are exposed without loading it:
readiness_report(), deployment_topology(), inspect_state_snapshot(file),
and engine_launch_mismatches / config_engine_launch_mismatches, which
apply the engine launch rules through Rust and return every conflict.

Python tests compare restored models with the uninterrupted original by
exact float bits: file, dict and dataclass restoration agree; continued
tuning in a fresh interpreter (different PYTHONHASHSEED) reproduces
predictions and state.bin bytes, with a cold control that differs; native
Qwen3-32B/h200 snapshots recompile to the recorded spec digest in another
process, packed snapshots survive changed referenced data while reference
snapshots reject it; execution profiles are copied; from_learned restores
without identity. A public-API test covers the Rust surface.

Add estimator_config.state_snapshot to the configuration page's estimator
namespaces with a field table and a section covering saving, restoration,
what each model kind stores, the fail-closed checks, the performance-data
fingerprint and packing, limitations (same aisimulate-core version, no
relocation, from_learned placeholder identity) and the readiness, topology
and launch-compatibility helpers.

Update the online regression, learned configuration and causal selection
pages, which stated that configuration cannot preserve tuned state and
that combined models cannot be saved.

The snapshot round-trip tests exercise fingerprints through a fake systems
root but never configure an external fpm_parquet_path. Pin the fingerprint
definition directly: it covers the hardware YAML and the system's data_dir
(trailing slash tolerated), excludes other systems' data, includes an
external FPM parquet and its metadata sidecar, and rejects a data_dir that
escapes the systems root. Packing copies exactly the fingerprinted files,
both external FPM files, and reproduces the source fingerprint.

timing_config_mismatches reported dp_size 0 and tensor_parallel_size 0 as
identity conflicts and accepted gpu_memory_utilization 2.0 or a negative
startup_time. Split launch validation into input checks and the rules that
relate the timing identity to the engine; the helper now runs the input
checks first and raises launch's own message, so an empty list means launch
accepts the arguments.

- Fingerprint native performance data when a process first loads a systems
root (memoized per root, system and external parquet) and keep it with the
engine-spec digest. to_file recomputes it and fails if the data changed
since load; restore checks the data on disk before loading any of it and
rejects a process that loaded the root before it changed.
- Exclude the FPM parquet path the Python compiler embeds in
extra.estimator_config from the engine-spec digest, so packed and
  relocated external parquets restore.
- Fingerprint like the loader resolves: data_dir joined onto the root
(./x, x/../y and absolute paths), directories (empty version directories
change resolution), dangling links recorded unread, dot-prefixed and
non-UTF-8 names skipped, a missing data_dir recorded as absent. Pack
recreates directories and links, copies the external parquet and sidecar,
and refuses a data_dir outside the root with a clear error.
- Report snapshot I/O as AicError::StateSnapshotIo, raised in Python as an
OSError subclass, never the skippable PerfDataNotAvailableError.
- Check manifest versions from a lenient header before the strict parse,
bound manifest and recorded-file reads (saturating, size checked first),
record snapshot paths lexically (std::path::absolute plus . and ..
removal, symlinks kept), fsync staged files and directories before the
publishing rename, and build from_learned restores from verified bytes.
- Tests: load-time drift, external parquet fingerprint and pack, loader
semantics, oversized manifests and states, newer manifests, default
online and causal-selector settings with structural rebuilds, learned
frozen with fixed corrections, estimate-only cold controls at save and
after continuation, and a continue-mode corruption fuzz for every kind
and for the online checkpoint behind re-pinned digests.

best_available(file=X) restored from the path pinned in X/config.json, so a
copied snapshot silently restored the original. Require X to be that
directory (os.path.samefile) and raise ValueError otherwise.

Tests cover fpm_interpolation with an external parquet and no data
directory for fixed, dynamic-local and hybrid corrections (frozen restore,
continuation in a fresh process with identical bits and state bytes,

📝 Summary

Risk level: Elevated

Three areas need the most human attention:

  1. Snapshot restore validation across model state, identity, versions, and saved files.
  2. Native performance-data fingerprinting, optional data packing, and staged snapshot publication.
  3. Python file-based restore behavior and launch-compatibility checks.

Changes and public contracts

The PR adds versioned save-and-restore snapshots for forward-pass performance models. Rust adds snapshot save and inspection APIs. ForwardPassPerfModel::best_available restores a snapshot when the configuration pins one. Python adds best_available(file=...), snapshot save and inspection, and launch-mismatch reporting.

Snapshots record model identity, digests, estimator state, and version information. Native snapshots fingerprint performance data and can optionally pack it. Restore validates identity, snapshot kind, recorded files, state layout, and estimator-specific compatibility. The tuning policy controls whether a restored model rejects or continues tuning.

estimator_config.state_snapshot requires an explicit estimation mode and fallback_policy='deny'. Python requires exactly one of config or file; file-based restore reads config.json and checks that the requested directory is the snapshot’s pinned directory. The launch-compatibility helper reports timing-identity mismatches and returns errors for malformed or independently invalid launch inputs.

Evidence supplied

The change summary reports cargo test --workspace with 2,519 passed, 0 failed, and 1 ignored; 35 selected snapshot tests; and 19 targeted Python tests, with one integration test not run. It also reports 12,227 Python unit tests passed, 30 skipped, and 3 environmental failures. These results were not independently verified.

The reported environmental failures were due to unavailable scikit-learn and two support-CLI subprocess tests that required an absolute PYTHONPATH. Fast CI was pending, and full CI was not run. No current review findings were supplied, so review severity counts are unavailable.

The source checks confirm the restore path and identity checks, snapshot configuration constraints, Python file contract, and launch-mismatch rules. They do not independently verify test results or CI status.

Technical quality and merge readiness

The supplied change summary describes extensive state and integrity validation. Test evidence and CI completion remain author-reported or unavailable. Treat bot review as neither approval nor merge-readiness evidence.

This change adds versioned state snapshots for forward-pass performance models. It adds state serialization and restoration checks, native performance-data and engine identity checks, snapshot APIs, readiness and topology reports, and engine-launch timing compatibility checks.

Possibly related issues

  • ai-dynamo/dynamo#17225: Adds snapshot save and restore through best_available, which supports reuse of saved model state in separate AISimulate replays. The issue’s dataset and aggregate phase-query work is not covered here.

Possibly related PRs

  • ai-dynamo/aisimulate#585: Adds AFD fields and an execution plan to EngineSpec. These fields affect the engine identity used by native snapshots.
  • ai-dynamo/aisimulate#567: Changes learned FPM defaults and configuration deserialization. Those changes can affect snapshot identity and restore compatibility.
  • ai-dynamo/aisimulate#413: Changes package and crate versions. Snapshot manifests record the core version and validate version identity.

Full details: Modeling And Data Evidence

Explanation

The PR supplies reproducible, non-binary modeling evidence. Deterministic synthetic streams and query sets are defined in crates/core/src/perfmodel/fpm/snapshot/tests.rs:38-163; round-trip tests compare exact prediction bits, diagnostics, readiness, continuation behavior, and cold controls in :253-340. Python tests repeat this across processes and compare machine-readable prediction bits and readiness reports (python/aisimulate/tests/unit/sdk/test_fpm_state_snapshot.py:126-229). Provenance is exercised through pinned engine-spec and performance-data fingerprints, manifest records, and change detection (crates/core/src/perfmodel/fpm/snapshot/tests.rs:572-850). The execution-profile test includes an explicit synthetic oracle (python/aisimulate/tests/unit/sdk/test_fpm_state_snapshot.py:360-379). The checks also include an independent state-layout decoder (crates/core/src/perfmodel/fpm/snapshot/tests.rs:2564-2727). No unexplained model refresh or binary-only validation is introduced.

Full details: Compatibility Boundaries

Explanation

No compatibility-boundary failure is introduced. The Rust PyO3 methods and _native.pyi declarations match for all added methods, including defaults and return shapes (crates/core/src/perfmodel/py.rs:2355-2403, python/aisimulate/src/aisimulate_core/_native.pyi:198-204). The Python facade preserves positional best_available(config) and adds the documented keyword-only file; Dynamo’s current consumers continue to pass a configuration (ai-dynamo/dynamo@e14686d5cdb738f497e5fd20e0460640a583cb2f, components/src/dynamo/planner/core/perf_model/engine_query.py:211-222). Wheel, crate, and workspace versions remain synchronized at 0.13.0, with no version-manifest changes in the PR. The release contract remains one aisimulate wheel and one publishable aisimulate-core crate (scripts/release/build_release_artifacts.py:57-71, 155-161). The source contains no new Dynamo or Aiconfigurator dependency; Dynamo remains an external consumer.

Full details: Cross-Layer Contract

Explanation

The previous stale-signature failure remains unresolved. RustForwardPassPerfModel.best_available declares config=None and keyword-only file=None in python/aisimulate/src/aisimulate_core/sdk/rust_engine_step.py:411-416, but python/aisimulate/tests/cross_package/test_core_public_api.py:124-126 checks only parameter names and keyword-only status. The contract test does not verify either default, so a public default regression can pass.

Resolution

Update test_core_public_api.py to assert best_available["config"].default is None and best_available["file"].default is None, while retaining the parameter-order and keyword-only assertions.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the required template and provides detailed scope, review guidance, compatibility risks, test results, boundary cases, and provenance. However, the medium-risk change lists the required Codex review commit as "pending", so the required review evidence is incomplete.

Resolution

Complete the Codex review and replace "Codex reviewed commit: pending" with the reviewed commit SHA, or document an approved exception for the required medium-risk review evidence before merging.

Full details: Review Evidence

Explanation

The supplied PR description is truncated before the evidence section. The objective summary reports several commands and results and states that Full CI was not run, but it does not establish the authored distinctions between local, fake-runner, parity, and production evidence or the complete negative/boundary results. The reviewed diff changes no workflow files. Repository policy also states that workflows below python/aisimulate/ are provenance, not hosted-CI evidence (REVIEW.md:138-140), but the unavailable remainder of the description prevents checking whether it makes such a claim.

Resolution

Provide the complete authored PR description, especially its Evidence section. Verify exact commands and results, negative or boundary validation, evidence provenance labels, and any hosted-CI claims about nested workflows.

Collapse the nested if let in validate.

Clippy flags this if statement as collapsible. If CI runs clippy with -D warnings, this blocks the build. The repo already uses let chains in config.rs, so the fix is consistent with existing code.

⚠️ Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

Remove measured figures from docs/.

These lines state measurement results: "245 files (about 18 MB)" for h200_sxm, and "tens of megabytes to above a gigabyte" for learner state. They have no supplied evidence and go stale when the data changes. The repository rule keeps measured results out of docs/.

Replace the figures with a qualitative statement. For example: packing copies every fingerprinted entry, so size depends on the system's data. Put any measured size under benchmarks/evidence/.

As per coding guidelines: "Keep run logs, investigation notes, and benchmark results out of docs/; measured evidence belongs under benchmarks/evidence/."

## Performance Model Changes

Before changing a performance model, its configuration, or a caller in Rust,
Python, CLI, Sweeper, Replay, or Planner, MUST read and follow
[`perfmodel-api.md`](python/aisimulate/.claude/rules/perfmodel-api.md).
This includes new features and configuration migrations.

Learning: In `python/aisimulate`, the consolidated public SDK package is `aisimulate_core.sdk`. Documentation examples that import `ForwardPassPerfModelConfig` and `RustForwardPassPerfModel` must use `from aisimulate_core.sdk import ...`; the previous `aiconfigurator_core.sdk` package assumption does not apply after PR #274.

Multi-repo context ai-dynamo/dynamo, ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator

Linked repositories findings

ai-dynamo/dynamo

  • Dynamo pins AISimulate exactly at 0.13.0-dev.202610240000000082 in Cargo and Python/container packaging, so the new snapshot APIs require synchronized publication and pin updates. [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::lib/bindings/python/Cargo.toml:58-63] [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::container/deps/requirements.aisimulate.txt:4-6]
  • Planner constructs models through RustForwardPassPerfModel.best_available(ais_config) and enforces matching worker_type; changes to config parsing or best_available compatibility affect this downstream path. [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::components/src/dynamo/planner/core/perf_model/engine_query.py:210-229]
  • Dynamo passes complete ForwardPassPerfModelConfig objects through ForwardPassPerfModelConfig(**config).to_dict(), explicitly relying on upstream preservation of estimator controls and policy fields. [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::components/src/dynamo/common/configuration/groups/ais_perf_args.py:98-116]
  • Replay delegates engine-argument normalization to AISimulate’s public materialize_engine_launch_config, making launch parsing/default changes relevant to replay compatibility. [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::components/src/dynamo/replay/simulation.py:344-359]
  • Dynamo’s AIS interpolation path explicitly materializes TP, MoE TP/EP, and attention-DP launch arguments, which should remain aligned with the new launch timing-identity checks. [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::components/src/dynamo/profiler/utils/dgd_generation.py:441-468]

ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator

  • The frozen compatibility SDK still exposes the older best_available(config, options=None) API, forwarding exactly two JSON arguments to its Rust extension. [::ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator::aic-core/src/aiconfigurator_core/sdk/rust_engine_step.py:166-185]
  • Its native Python stub and PyO3 binding likewise retain only (config_json, options_json=None), with no snapshot, readiness, topology, or launch-mismatch methods. [::ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator::aic-core/src/aiconfigurator_core/_aiconfigurator_core.pyi:156-165] [::ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator::aic-core/rust/aiconfigurator-core/src/py.rs:1394-1405]
  • The repository identifies itself as a version 0.12.0 compatibility distribution whose active development moved to AISimulate; this PR’s new APIs should therefore remain AISimulate-specific rather than requiring compatibility-repository changes. [::ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator::aic-core/pyproject.toml:4-11] [::ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator::docs/aisimulate_migration.md:6-19]

Comment thread crates/tests/public-api/src/lib.rs Resolved
- Restore's fingerprint check seeds the process's load-time fingerprint,
so native selection reuses it instead of hashing the same data again.
- Concurrent first loads of one systems root share a per-key OnceLock
cell and hash the data once.
- The cross-package contract now expects best_available's keyword-only
  file parameter.
- The public API snapshot test writes under a tempdir guard.
- Collapse the nested launch check into a let chain.
- Describe packed and learner snapshot sizes without measured figures.

[::ai-dynamo/dynamo::components/src/dynamo/planner/core/perf_model/engine_query.py:210-223] [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::lib/bindings/python/src/dynamo/_internal/ais.py:140-143]
  • Replay normalizes engine arguments through materialize_engine_launch_config; launch-default changes should remain aligned with the new timing mismatch validation. [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::components/src/dynamo/replay/simulation.py:344-360]
  • Dynamo pins AISimulate exactly in both Cargo and wheel dependencies, so snapshot APIs require the pinned AISimulate artifacts to be published and synchronized. [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::Cargo.toml:52-55] [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::lib/bindings/python/Cargo.toml:58-63] [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::container/deps/requirements.aisimulate.txt:4-6]

  • The compatibility SDK still exposes the legacy best_available(config, options=None) API and forwards two JSON arguments to its native extension. [::ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator::aic-core/src/aiconfigurator_core/sdk/rust_engine_step.py:166-185] [::ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator::aic-core/rust/aiconfigurator-core/src/py.rs:1394-1405]
  • This is a version 0.12.0 compatibility distribution whose active development has moved to AISimulate, so the new snapshot APIs do not appear to require changes here. [::ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator::aic-core/pyproject.toml:4-11] [::ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator::docs/aisimulate_migration.md:6-19]

Comment thread docs/perf-model/configuration.md Resolved
- A packed native snapshot still needs the configuration that `model`
names; restoration fails if it compiles a different engine spec.
- Explain why restore hashes performance data only before loading:
tables load lazily, and `to_file` rejects data changed after the check.

Document execution-profile copying as conditional.

This row combines op_level and fpm_interpolation, but the implementation copies execution_profile only when one is configured. A normal fpm_interpolation snapshot does not contain this file. 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Scope the relocation restriction to the unmodified file= workflow.

best_available(file=path) rejects a copied directory when its config.json still pins the original absolute path. However, the restore implementation uses the configured state_snapshot.path and does not compare it with a saved destination. Therefore, the statement that snapshots restore only from their original directory is broader than the enforced behavior. Document the exact requirement, or add an explicit destination check. Before changing a performance model, its configuration, or a caller in Rust,
Python, CLI, Sweeper, Replay, or Planner, MUST read and follow

  • This distribution identifies itself as version 0.12.0 and directs active development and migration to AISimulate, so the new APIs should remain isolated from this compatibility surface. [::ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator::aic-core/pyproject.toml:4-11] [::ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator::docs/aisimulate_migration.md:6-19]

- Only best_available(file=path) checks the saved location; a configuration
edited to name a copy restores it after manifest verification, while its
other pinned paths still name the original directory.
- Only a configured op_level.execution_profile is copied.

A from_learned snapshot derives its artifact path from
state_snapshot.path, so editing only that path is an identity mismatch.
Identity snapshots must keep their other pinned paths unchanged.

to_file wrote a directory and file= named one, while the rest of the API
calls it a state snapshot. Rename both before the API ships:

- ForwardPassPerfModel::to_file and RustForwardPassPerfModel.to_file
  become save_state_snapshot.
- best_available(file=) and config_engine_launch_mismatches(file=)
become state_snapshot=; the cross-package contract expects it.
- inspect_state_snapshot's Python parameter is path, matching its stub.

- Taking the load-time fingerprint, and the restore check, stops sharing
performance tables other engines in the process parsed earlier for that
systems root and system, so a model saves and restores the data it read.
- The fingerprint reads data_dir the way the loader joins it, so `..`
follows symlinks and missing intermediate directories; packing requires a
data_dir of plain relative names because the hardware YAML is copied
  unchanged.
- Configuration normalization reports I/O failures of a snapshot's learned
artifact or online checkpoint as snapshot I/O, never missing data.

- Engine replay's AIC timing applies a tuned model's online correction,
such as a restored snapshot's, to every prefill and decode phase it prices
from the native engine. Decode previously applied it only while capturing
diagnostics, and prefill never did. Operation evidence and its energy
scale with the correction, so reported power is unchanged; untuned models
  skip the lookup.
- The non-UTF-8 file name fingerprint test runs only on Linux, because
macOS APFS rejects the name; the dangling-link test still runs on every

#607 corrects replay timing per phase. A vLLM or TensorRT-LLM pass that
computes prefill and decode is one forward, which a tuned model corrects as a
mixed iteration, so the pass must cost what estimate_forward_pass_time_ms()
returns for that iteration. Schedulers now price such a pass once its decode
work is known: TimingModel::predict_mixed_pass_ms returns the prefill and
decode parts of one forward, and the ais provider applies the mixed
iteration's correction to both. Captured FPM evidence keys records by their
correction, since the same prefill totals are corrected differently alone and
in a mixed pass. Passes without both kinds of work, and providers without the
composition, are priced as before.

…amo#607)

* feat: record engine spec digests and list launch timing conflicts

* feat: save and restore FPM model state through best_available

(top-level files plus the system data_dir), optionally packed into the
  snapshot; execution profiles are copied;
- regression linear (incl. error threshold), selected D=1..6 and spline
  (periodic/adaptive): samples, fits, statistics and clocks;
- learned frozen: the forest (exact artifact bytes, or the checkpoint
  forest exported unchanged) plus correction stores;
- learned online: a v5 runtime checkpoint written with its source paths
  cleared so identical state writes identical bytes;
- causal selector: frozen expert, adaptive runtime checkpoint, every
calibration store and all selector keys (standalone checkpoints still
  reject it);
- from_learned: forest, constructor options and corrections under a
placeholder identity, restored without identity checks.

Restoration fails closed: explicit mode and fallback deny are required;
digests, versions, typed identity, engine spec and perf data must match;
decoded state is validated against stores freshly built from the
configuration (bucket keys and bounds, totals, dynamic rows and recomputed
factors, spline knots and clocks, store kinds and order, selector
evidence) so corrupt input is an error instead of a panic; restored
diagnostics must equal the saved ones. on_tune=reject makes tuning an
error; continue resumes exactly.

readiness_report() adds per-store estimation readiness (with not-ready
reasons) and correction readiness for every kind; deployment_topology()
and inspect_state_snapshot() expose identity and readiness for gates
without loading a model.

* feat: expose FPM state snapshots in the Python SDK

RustForwardPassPerfModel.to_file(path, *, include_perf_db=False) saves the
complete tuned state and returns the pinned configuration as a dict.
best_available(config=None, *, file=None) takes exactly one of them; file
reads the snapshot's config.json and passes it unchanged to the same Rust
constructor, so there is no Python-side construction logic or default.

Gates for replaying a saved model are exposed without loading it:
readiness_report(), deployment_topology(), inspect_state_snapshot(file),
and engine_launch_mismatches / config_engine_launch_mismatches, which
apply the engine launch rules through Rust and return every conflict.

* docs: document FPM state snapshots

Add estimator_config.state_snapshot to the configuration page's estimator
namespaces with a field table and a section covering saving, restoration,
what each model kind stores, the fail-closed checks, the performance-data
fingerprint and packing, limitations (same aisimulate-core version, no
relocation, from_learned placeholder identity) and the readiness, topology
and launch-compatibility helpers.

Update the online regression, learned configuration and causal selection
pages, which stated that configuration cannot preserve tuned state and
that combined models cannot be saved.

* test: cover performance-data fingerprints and packing directly

The snapshot round-trip tests exercise fingerprints through a fake systems
root but never configure an external fpm_parquet_path. Pin the fingerprint
definition directly: it covers the hardware YAML and the system's data_dir
(trailing slash tolerated), excludes other systems' data, includes an
external FPM parquet and its metadata sidecar, and rejects a data_dir that
escapes the systems root. Packing copies exactly the fingerprinted files,
both external FPM files, and reproduces the source fingerprint.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

* fix: validate launch inputs before listing timing mismatches

timing_config_mismatches reported dp_size 0 and tensor_parallel_size 0 as
identity conflicts and accepted gpu_memory_utilization 2.0 or a negative
startup_time. Split launch validation into input checks and the rules that
relate the timing identity to the engine; the helper now runs the input
checks first and raises launch's own message, so an empty list means launch
accepts the arguments.

root (memoized per root, system and external parquet) and keep it with the
engine-spec digest. to_file recomputes it and fails if the data changed
since load; restore checks the data on disk before loading any of it and
rejects a process that loaded the root before it changed.

* fix: restore Python snapshots only from their pinned directory

best_available(file=X) restored from the path pinned in X/config.json, so a
copied snapshot silently restored the original. Require X to be that
directory (os.path.samefile) and raise ValueError otherwise.

Tests cover fpm_interpolation with an external parquet and no data
directory for fixed, dynamic-local and hybrid corrections (frozen restore,
continuation in a fresh process with identical bits and state bytes,
packed restore in a fresh process after the source changes, reference
rejection and save refusal after drift), load-time fingerprints across
processes, OSError classes through file= and config=, and child-process
continuation for error-threshold and selected regression, learned frozen,
from_learned, learned online and the causal selector under default
settings.

* docs: describe snapshot fingerprint timing, paths and errors

Document when the performance-data fingerprint is taken, what it covers
like the loader, the sync before publishing, lexical path pinning and the
file= directory rule, OSError classes for snapshot I/O, the two online
diagnostics that are not state, and that launch helpers raise invalid
launch inputs.

* fix: hash snapshot perf data once and update the API contract

- Restore's fingerprint check seeds the process's load-time fingerprint,
so native selection reuses it instead of hashing the same data again.
- Concurrent first loads of one systems root share a per-key OnceLock
cell and hash the data once.
- The cross-package contract now expects best_available's keyword-only
  file parameter.
- The public API snapshot test writes under a tempdir guard.
- Collapse the nested launch check into a let chain.
- Describe packed and learner snapshot sizes without measured figures.

* docs: note that native snapshots read the model configuration again

- A packed native snapshot still needs the configuration that `model`
names; restoration fails if it compiles a different engine spec.
- Explain why restore hashes performance data only before loading:
tables load lazily, and `to_file` rejects data changed after the check.

* docs: scope snapshot relocation and execution-profile copying

- Only best_available(file=path) checks the saved location; a configuration
edited to name a copy restores it after manifest verification, while its
other pinned paths still name the original directory.
- Only a configured op_level.execution_profile is copied.

* docs: separate from_learned snapshot relocation

A from_learned snapshot derives its artifact path from
state_snapshot.path, so editing only that path is an identity mismatch.
Identity snapshots must keep their other pinned paths unchanged.

* refactor: rename the snapshot API to save_state_snapshot

to_file wrote a directory and file= named one, while the rest of the API
calls it a state snapshot. Rename both before the API ships:

- ForwardPassPerfModel::to_file and RustForwardPassPerfModel.to_file
  become save_state_snapshot.
- best_available(file=) and config_engine_launch_mismatches(file=)
become state_snapshot=; the cross-package contract expects it.
- inspect_state_snapshot's Python parameter is path, matching its stub.

* fix: pin snapshot data provenance, packable data_dir and learned I/O

- Taking the load-time fingerprint, and the restore check, stops sharing
performance tables other engines in the process parsed earlier for that
systems root and system, so a model saves and restores the data it read.
- The fingerprint reads data_dir the way the loader joins it, so `..`
follows symlinks and missing intermediate directories; packing requires a
data_dir of plain relative names because the hardware YAML is copied
  unchanged.
- Configuration normalization reports I/O failures of a snapshot's learned
artifact or online checkpoint as snapshot I/O, never missing data.
