feat(keys): add next and previous profile shortcuts - #342
Add profile.next and profile.previous to cycle through persistent profiles in roster order, with wraparound. Both commands appear under Profiles in Keyboard & accessibility and can be rebound.
This replaces #288 after recreating my fork and rebases the change onto current main. It also addresses the queued-switch review feedback: repeated steps while Settings returns to Browse now start from the queued destination, so a second keypress is not lost.
Why
Switching between work and personal profiles currently requires the mouse. These commands provide a keyboard route without changing the private-window shortcuts.
Proposed defaults are Ctrl+Cmd+P / Ctrl+Cmd+Shift+P on macOS and F9 / Shift+F9 on Windows. These defaults are proposed for maintainer review in #287, not yet agreed. Happy to adjust them.
The queued-switch regression test failed before the fix and passed afterward. It starts in profile A, queues two Next steps while the browser-return barrier is pending, and verifies that the eventual destination is C. Other coverage checks three-profile next/previous ordering and wraparound, a single profile, missing-window and unrostered-profile rejection, leaving private browsing without cycling through the incognito profile, and rebinding Previous profile through the keyboard UI.
The shell tests use a fake engine and the WebKit tests use mocked native bindings. The screenshot below comes from that component test, not a packaged-app run. Native interactive QA and Windows runtime testing have not been repeated for this revision. Local workspace Clippy also includes pre-existing Wry build-feature edits; those edits are not part of this PR.
Checklist
cargo fmt --all --check and cargo clippy --workspace --all-targets --locked -- -D warnings are clean
Relevant tests pass and new behavior is covered, including the deny path for anything security-sensitive
pnpm --dir frame check is clean (frontend changes)
Screenshots or a recording attached (visual changes)
Docs updated where behavior or architecture changed
No new telemetry, network path or heavy dependency without prior discussion
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Added keyboard shortcuts to cycle through profiles in roster order, wrapping at either end. Private browsing switches from the associated regular profile, and repeated shortcuts can build on a pending profile switch.
Added a Profiles section to keyboard settings, where the shortcuts can be viewed and customized.
Documentation
Documented the profile shortcuts and their behavior.

Walkthrough
The change adds next- and previous-profile keyboard commands with platform-specific defaults. The shell cycles through rostered profiles, and Keyboard settings lists the commands for rebinding.

The command registry adds platform-specific shortcuts. The shell selects the adjacent rostered profile, wraps at either end, handles queued switch destinations and private sessions, and rejects missing or unrostered current profiles. Tests cover cycling, deferred steps, rejection cases, and private windows.
Expose profile shortcuts in Keyboard settings frame/messages/en.json, frame/src/features/settings/lib/keymap-model.ts, frame/src/features/settings/tests/*, docs/design/settings.md
Keyboard settings adds a Profiles section with localized titles for both commands. Tests verify the section, shortcut controls, and rebinding. The design documentation describes the shortcuts and cycling behavior.
zephium-browser/Zephium#288: Implements the same profile commands and settings entries. This PR also covers queued-destination handling and adds broader tests.
Direct tests may fail until messages are regenerated. The change is mergeable with this workflow limitation understood.

Explanation
Issue #287 requires profile.next and profile.previous, roster-order cycling with wraparound, rebindable commands in a Profiles settings section, and proposed platform defaults. The reviewed changes register both commands, implement forward and reverse roster cycling with wraparound, cover queued destinations and private browsing, add English labels and Profiles grouping, and add shell and component tests. The command defaults match the issue: Ctrl+Cmd+P and Ctrl+Cmd+Shift+P on macOS, and F9 and Shift+F9 on non-macOS platforms. The issue leaves final default approval open, so no approval decision is required for coding compliance.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The changes stay within issue #287. Registry updates, shell behavior, regression tests, settings labels and grouping, component tests, and settings documentation directly implement or verify the requested keyboard commands. The documented screenshot supports the settings UI and does not add unrelated product behavior. No unrelated source, telemetry, network path, or dependency change is identified in the reviewed summary.
Full details: One Logical Change
Explanation
All 10 changed files support the single profile-shortcut feature: command dispatch and roster cycling, command registry, localized settings grouping, focused tests, documentation, and the related screenshot asset. The only deletions update test indices for the new Profiles section. The diff shows no unrelated refactor, rename, or reformatting.
Full details: Linked Issue For Larger Changes
Explanation
The PR adds a user-facing profile shortcut feature across shell, commands, settings UI, tests, and documentation. Its description explicitly states “Closes #287,” and the linked issue requests this feature.
Full details: Tests Cover Changed Behavior
Explanation
Tests cover the changed Rust and TypeScript behavior. profiles.rs runs both command IDs through Command::Run, verifies next/previous order and wraparound, queued-step accumulation, private-window handling, and rejection for no focused window and an unrostered profile. The core registry's generic default-parsing and collision test also exercises the new shortcuts. keymap-model.test.ts checks the Profiles section and localized titles, and KeyboardPage.component.test.ts checks display and rebinding.
Full details: Generated Files Follow Their Source
Explanation
The pull request does not change frame/src/shared/ipc/bindings.ts, Cargo.lock, pnpm-lock.yaml, or generated files under frame/src/shared/i18n. It changes the message catalog at frame/messages/en.json, but no generated i18n output. None of the explicit failure conditions applies.
Full details: Privileged Boundary Intact
Explanation
No privileged-boundary failure is introduced. The PR changes only command registration, shell profile cycling, settings labels/model, tests, and documentation. It adds no Tauri/Wry IPC handler, custom protocol, CSP change, or release devtools change. The new command IDs are exact Rust match arms in operation_run_command; the profile operation derives its target from the roster and operation_switch_profile rejects unrostered profiles. The existing Rust run_command path also requires the Main caller, bounds the ID, and accepts only registered commands.
Full details: Performance Impact Stated
Explanation
The PR adds keyboard-triggered execution paths: Command::Run calls operation_run_command, which now dispatches profile.next and profile.previous; the new operation scans the profile roster and runs on each shortcut activation. This matches the check’s per-keystroke hot-path definition. The PR description lists tests but states no performance impact and provides no performance measurement.
Resolution
Update the PR description with the performance impact or a measurement for the new shortcut path. Include the roster-scan complexity and, preferably, measured shortcut handling time for a representative roster size.

Generate i18n messages before direct Vitest commands.
test and test:component can reuse an ignored generated module from before this PR. That module does not contain keymap_group_profiles, so keymapSections can call section.title() on undefined. The direct test commands then fail, while check and build regenerate messages through their existing paths.
