Dependencies and merge order

Independent feature; proposed landing position 9, after #1827. We will update this branch to preserve authorization-aware FileExporter dispatch and propagate job.cancel into the shared job constructor, set cancel: None in the preflight ExportJob initializer, and retain both appended render_settings test groups. These resolutions already exist in the tested combined tree but are not yet on this independent branch. The Cargo.lock overlap with #1891 merges cleanly.

Full nine-PR index, merge instructions, audited heads and validation evidence. The first five positions are independent, not a serial dependency chain. Combined CI evidence is not a claim of nine standalone full-suite passes.

An export to an existing filename previously truncated the old output before rendering finished; cancelling could then delete it. This change renders into sibling temporary files and uses the existing tempfile library to publish completed outputs.

The Render UI asks once before replacing existing movie or image-sequence outputs. Cancelling confirmation preserves the files; accepted overwrites work for ordinary users. The CLI exposes --overwrite, and command/API callers use the same preflight confirmation flow. Failed or cancelled encoding cleans owned temporary files and preserves previous media. Replacement errors are reported with the affected destination.

This revision replaces the earlier custom security adapters and removes the audit-privilege requirement. It uses normal library replacement semantics, without promising preservation of exact ownership, ACL/audit metadata, or a whole-sequence transaction. Image sequences publish per file; unrelated files and trailing frames are not deleted. No custom crash-recovery or filesystem transaction implementation is included.

Validation: the frozen combined companion-PR candidate passed cargo xtask ci (3,721 passed, 0 failed, 33 ignored), including strict workspace/all-targets Clippy, formatting, policy checks, and WASM checks for 32 crates. Focused host/CLI/audio acceptance passed 10/10 with no ignores. This standalone export branch also passed a targeted host-library compile against its existing API. The backend owner separately passed 28 Windows export unit tests, 21 render-settings tests, strict Clippy, and locked-destination failure/retry checks. The full-suite result is for the combined candidate, not nine independent full-suite runs.

Contributor: @TimotheusG.

Unix outputs use normal creation permissions for new files and retain existing mode bits on replacement. Long fresh sequences are bounded by authorization size rather than the existing-output collision count; regressions cover more than 100,000 fresh paths, including overflow alternatives.

📝 Walkthrough

The export pipeline now preflights destinations and stages native output before publication. The render queue supports one-shot authorization for existing outputs. The UI and CLI use confirmation flows, with tests and documentation covering output handling.

Changes: Render output safety

Layer / File(s) Summary
Export preflight and staged publication
crates/export/..., docs/export-output-safety.md, .github/workflows/export-filesystem.yml
The export crate inspects destinations, validates authorization, stages native files, and publishes or discards staged output. Tests, documentation, dependencies, and cross-platform CI cover the lifecycle.
Render-queue preflight and authorization
crates/engine/..., crates/host/...
The engine stores one-shot reviews, validates confirmation and overwrite inputs, and passes authorization to local or offloaded workers. The host exporter exposes preflight and authorized export paths.
UI overwrite confirmation
crates/ui-egui/..., docs/control-protocol.md
UI render requests use preflight. A collision dialog offers replacement or cancellation.
CLI overwrite option and write confinement
apps/effectcraft-cli/..., crates/automation/...
The CLI limits --overwrite to render commands and uses confirmation. Automation confines render preflight writes.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 2889d

Exports to unusual filesystems that support neither no-replace rename nor hard links can spend the full render before failing at publication. Existing outputs are preserved and normal destinations are unaffected, so merge-readiness risk is low.

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 2889d

Staged publication substantially improves protection against cancelled or failed exports. However, replacing an existing file can change its ownership and access rules, potentially exposing newly exported media to additional local readers in shared directories. Sequence publication and crash recovery also have explicitly limited guarantees.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: Authorized replacement can broaden local access to exported media. The base opened and truncated the existing file, retaining its ownership and access policy; the head replaces it with a sibling temporary file and preserves only Unix mode bits. For example, an existing group-readable file assigned to a restricted group can be replaced by a file inheriting a broader group from a setgid directory. File-specific ACL restrictions can similarly be lost. Preserving mode bits and documenting ordinary replacement semantics are meaningful counterevidence, but neither preserves the original effective reader set. This concern is conditional on such directory and file policies; it is not evidence of an observed disclosure.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated security-sensitive scope is the native export process's filesystem authority over requested movie, audio, sequence, and configured overflow destinations. The access-policy concern can affect every replaced file in an authorized export. Exposure requires directory traversal and read permissions for additional local principals; no cross-tenant or remote-service escalation was established.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A local reader excluded by an existing output's group or file-specific ACL may gain access to newly rendered media when the replacement inherits broader directory policy. Unlike the base's in-place truncation, sibling-file replacement changes the security-bearing inode. Explicit overwrite consent and retained Unix mode bits limit the concern but do not establish equivalent effective access.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The command boundary accepts a confirmation identifier and explicit overwrite intent, not caller-supplied authorization JSON. The engine retains the destination snapshot and consumes the review before execution. Automation confinement includes preflight in implicit render-output path checks and rejects implicit-path operations embedded in confined batches.
  • inferred — The low-level JSON authorization is a destination snapshot supplied by a trusted host, not an authenticated capability proving user consent. Direct library callers can construct it, but that alone does not establish an attacker crossing a new trust boundary. The reviewed command flow keeps the snapshot internal; external trust guarantees for other embedders remain unestablished.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Normal cancellation and rendering failures preserve prior destination media and remove only owned staging. New destinations use no-clobber publication. Process termination and uncooperating external writers remain outside those guarantees, so normal cleanup must not be interpreted as crash recovery or filesystem compare-and-swap.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — For outputs whose confidentiality depends on file-specific ownership, group, or ACL policy, define an explicit replacement policy that preserves effective access or refuses replacement when equivalence cannot be established without additional privilege. Validate that policy against shared-directory, setgid-group, and restrictive-ACL cases.

Probe hard-link support before rendering.

For a new destination, Staged::publish_inner calls fs::hard_link without a fallback. export_async publishes only after export_with completes, so an unsupported filesystem can spend the full render and encode time before returning an I/O error. The previous File::create path did not impose a hard-link prerequisite.

The documentation already lists hard-link support as a requirement. Therefore, this is an early-failure improvement, not a violation for supported destinations. Add the probe in Staged::create; original and probe are both in scope there.

Suggested early probe

Preserve SACLs during Windows publication.

When a destination has audit ACEs, Policy::read does not request its SACL. The later SetNamedSecurityInfo call also omits S::Sacl, so the supplied sacl pointer does not set the staging file's SACL. The policy comparison can therefore succeed, and publish_inner can replace the destination with different or missing audit ACEs. Add SACL capture and application. Propagate privilege errors so unsupported destinations are rejected.

@coderabbitai review

The full audit-policy concern is addressed in f217793: Windows replacements capture the full SACL, restore its protection state, and verify it before publication. Missing audit privilege refuses replacement before staging rather than falling back to a partial snapshot. New output paths remain usable without that privilege; the application never enables privileges.

The regression matrix includes explicit protected/unprotected audit ACEs, audit changes during rendering, and a separate child process with audit privilege removed. Eight privilege-dependent Windows replacement tests are explicit local skips and are all selected by the Windows CI launcher with --include-ignored. Local gates passed; privileged runner confirmation is pending. The PR description calls out the new overwrite requirement.

Latest head 7fabc35 is ready for maintainer review.

  • CodeRabbit completed review of this exact head with no actionable comments, minimal merge risk, and no retained architecture concerns.
  • Windows, macOS, and Linux filesystem CI passed: https://github.com/TimotheusG/effectcraft/actions/runs/39370124892
  • Windows ran all 9 native and 13 export integration tests with zero ignored, including audit ACE/protection preservation, changed-audit refusal, the 1,536-frame workload, and a separate unprivileged child test.
  • Local strict Clippy and the full integration gate passed. The integration gate used temporary companion-PR fixes for known baseline failures; those changes were removed before committing. Standalone workspace CI still has the previously disclosed baseline Stills warning. CodeRabbit's own Clippy tool timed out; this is not being represented as a passed tool run.

Windows overwrite behavior is deliberately strict: full audit policy must be readable and preserved or replacement is refused. The application never enables privileges; users without enabled SeSecurityPrivilege can export to a new filename. Per-file publication and external-writer limitations are documented.

Updated in 4cf2266 to normal library-based overwrite with explicit UI/CLI confirmation. The custom audit/security adapters and privilege requirement are removed. Existing outputs survive failed or cancelled encoding; completed outputs are published using tempfile. Image sequences publish per file.

The PR description now documents the bounded implementation and validation. The combined full cargo xtask ci gate passed (3,718 passed, 0 failed, 33 ignored), and this standalone branch passed its targeted host-library compile. Focused host/CLI acceptance passed without ignores.

Addressed both findings in 2889d97:

  • New Unix outputs use 0666 filtered by umask; replacements retain the existing mode using the standard File::set_permissions API on the owned staging file. Actual Linux regressions fail before and pass after the fix under umasks 0022 and 0077, including preserving an existing 0664 mode under 0077.
  • Fresh sequence frames and overflow alternatives no longer consume the existing-output collision limit, including the engine's separate destination-count limit. Exact fresh-path authorization remains, bounded by its serialized size. Regressions cover 100001 fresh paths and 100002 candidates with overflow, authorization validation, cancellation before encoding, and no created output files.

49 Windows export tests and Linux native checks passed. The combined companion-PR candidate passed cargo xtask ci: 3,721 passed, 0 failed, 33 ignored; strict all-targets Clippy, formatting, policies and WASM (32 crates) passed. The engine large-sequence regression passed in that gate. No additional filesystem guarantees were introduced.
