…ntel Posterize: round_away decided half-way by subtracting, and drivers may fuse the product that feeds it into one fma (AMD does), skipping the product's rounding. A straight value of 5/6 at level 4 gives 5/6 * 3 = 2.5 exactly in f32 on the CPU but 2.49999994 fused, so the GPU rounded a level down. round_away now compares x with t +/- 0.5 (exact for integer t), which no driver can fuse, and the level divide uses an fma-corrected division (div_rn) like the CPU's. CC Grid Wipe: the cell lookup floor(q / cs) used WGSL's division, which may be off by 2.5 ULP; at q = 7, cs = 3.5 AMD and Intel return just under 2 and pick the neighbouring cell. It uses div_rn too. New test: posterize matches the CPU exactly on every 8 bpc premultiplied colour and alpha at three levels (59715 of 65280 pairs differed before at level 4). RX 6900 XT, Vulkan: effectcraft-gpu 222 passed; the one failure left is CC Hex Tile, fixed by storytold#1776. DX12 + FXC (on storytold#1571): both tests pass. WGSL fma fused multiply add operation contract 2026
💡 Result:
## WGSL `fma` contract (2026)
**`fma(a, b, c)` is not guaranteed to be fused.** WGSL defines it as returning `a * b + c`, component-wise for vectors, but explicitly allows an implementation to compute an ordinary multiplication followed by an ordinary addition—with separate rounding at each step. That can lose precision or overflow in the intermediate product. ([w3.org](https://www.w3.org/TR/WGSL/))
This differs from IEEE-754 `fusedMultiplyAdd`, which computes the product and sum as if with unbounded precision and rounds only the final result. So WGSL `fma` does **not** promise IEEE FMA’s single-rounding behavior. ([w3.org](https://www.w3.org/TR/WGSL/))
WGSL also leaves the rounding direction unspecified, and its general floating-point rules allow implementations to flush subnormal inputs or outputs to zero. ([w3.org](https://www.w3.org/TR/WGSL/))
**Practical takeaway:** use `fma` for the specified `a*b+c` result, but don’t rely on it for exact IEEE fused semantics, overflow avoidance, or bit-identical results across implementations. The current W3C draft is dated September 21, 2026. ([w3.org](https://www.w3.org/TR/WGSL/))

WGSL fma fused multiply add operation contract
💡 Result:
WGSL `fma(e1, e2, e3)` returns `e1 * e2 + e3`, component-wise for vectors. **Despite its name, it is not guaranteed to be fused**: an implementation may do a rounded multiply followed by a rounded add, so the intermediate product can lose precision or overflow. IEEE-754 fused multiply-add, by contrast, computes the exact product and sum before rounding once. ([gpuweb.github.io](https://gpuweb.github.io/gpuweb/wgsl/))
So, don’t rely on WGSL `fma` for single-rounding accuracy or for avoiding intermediate overflow; the actual implementation may fuse it, but the language contract permits it not to. The current WGSL specification’s floating-point accuracy rules also allow rounding up or down and do not specify a rounding mode. ([gpuweb.github.io](https://gpuweb.github.io/gpuweb/wgsl/))

Do not rely on fma being fused in div_rn.
WGSL permits fma to use separately rounded multiplication and addition. If Intel lowers fma(-q, y, x) without fusion, the residual can be lost. div_rn2 can then return a quotient on the wrong side of an integer boundary before floor selects the CC Grid Wipe cell. Confirm the generated Intel operation and test integer-boundary lookups. AMD validation does not establish Intel behavior.

Fixes the two remaining GPU-vs-CPU mismatches in #1605 that show on AMD and Intel but not NVIDIA: Posterize and CC Grid Wipe. (The third, CC Hex Tile, is fixed by #1776.) Shader-only plus one test.
Posterize: a fused multiply–subtract in
round_awayround_awaydecided the half-way case withabs(x - trunc(x)) >= 0.5. Posterize calls it onc = v * lv, and a driver may fuse that product with the following subtraction into one fma (AMD's compiler does; the same card fuses a plaina * b + c). That skips the product's rounding.For straight value
v = 5/6at level 4: in f32,x / ais0x1.aaaaaap-1andv * 3rounds to exactly 2.5, so the CPU rounds up. Fused, it'sfma(v, 3, -2) = 0.49999994, so the GPU rounded a whole level down. Every failing pair in the test is such a tie (15/18, 30/36, 55/66, … all 5/6).Fix:
round_awaycomparesxwitht ± 0.5instead (exact for integert). A product can't be fused into a comparison. The level divide also uses a newdiv_rn(one fma-corrected step, the patternfxs_qdivalready uses), so the output is the CPU's to the bit.CC Grid Wipe: inexact division in the cell lookup
floor(q / cs)picks the cell. WGSL's/may be off by 2.5 ULP. In the failing casecs = 70 × 0.5 / 10 = 3.5and pixel (23, 17) is atq = (7, 7): AMD and Intel return just under 2, sofloorpicks the neighbouring cell and the pixel flips (alpha 0.991 vs 0). NVIDIA returns exactly 2. Fix:floor(div_rn2(q, cs)).Test
