Part of #1335 (docs/gaps.md gap 25, Accessibility): the first slice. An audit test that makes accessibility measurable, and a pass over Effects & Presets, Settings and the Render Queue (with its Templates dialog), following what #780 did for the Project panel.

The audit

crates/ui-egui/tests/ui_accessibility_audit.rs renders panels headless (egui_kittest), walks the AccessKit tree and checks every control (button, check box, radio, text input, combo box, slider, spin button, colour well, tree / list item, tab, menu item, link, and any widget you can click or focus whose role is Unknown):

  • a non-empty name,
  • a role that says what it is,
  • the state that role needs: checked for check boxes, a number for sliders and spin buttons, a value for combo boxes, selected for tree and list items,
  • bounds (a node without them cannot be placed by assistive technology).

It prints a per-scenario and per-panel table (--nocapture). Project, Effects & Presets, Settings (all 19 pages) and Render Queue (empty, queued, expanded, a menu open, both Templates dialogs) must be at zero, and must show a minimum number of controls so "zero" cannot mean "looked at nothing". Every other panel is counted, not fixed, against a BASELINE ratchet in the test (findings and unnamed controls per scenario) that can only go down.

Before / after, from running the same test file on upstream/main (fails) and on this branch (passes):

Panel upstream/main: findings (unnamed) this branch controls looked at
Effects & Presets 135 (69) 0 75
Settings, 19 pages 829 (449) 0 601
Render Queue + Templates 64 (39) 0 79
Project 3 (2) 0 16

(Project had an unnamed search field and an unnamed scroll bar; both fixed by the shared changes below.) The other panels' numbers are in the test output; the baseline was measured after the shared-widget changes, so it is not an upstream number (Timeline 111 findings on upstream, 83 here). Timeline has about 55 unnamed controls; Properties 28; Composition 14.

crates/ui-egui/tests/ui_contrast.rs is separate and small: the WCAG 2 contrast ratio of the theme tokens (text, accent, focus, borders) against the backgrounds they are drawn on, for all three themes. 13 of 48 pairs fall short (white text on the accent button 3.46:1, error text, control borders, the Light theme's warning colour 1.85:1). They are listed with their measured ratios as a ratchet.

What changed

  • src/a11y.rs: helpers that write role, name, value and state onto a widget's AccessKit node after it is made (egui only fills bounds and actions for focusable widgets, so these add them for the rest), plus the pending-focus handshake the lists use.
  • Effects & Presets: rows are tree items (name, selected, depth, open state for folders); one Tab stop for the list (the cursor row, and its favourite star); Up / Down, Home / End, Page Up / Page Down, Right / Left (open, close, step into and out of a folder), Enter and Space (apply an effect or preset, open or close a folder); the focus follows the cursor and the row is scrolled into view; a focus ring. The search field and the options button are named; the options menu entries are menu items with checked state, and the menu takes the keyboard when opened with it.
  • Settings: the page list is a list (position in set, selected), one Tab stop, Up / Down / Home / End change page and move the focus; every control gets the name its label shows plus its value (spin buttons, drop-downs, text fields, colour wells, the Labels page, Appearance).
  • Render Queue: items are tree items ("1. Main, Queued": number, comp, status; selected; open); Up / Down / Home / End, Right / Left, Enter / Space (open or close), Delete (which already existed for the mouse's selection) now also with a focused row; named Render / Notify check boxes, twirls, Render settings / Output Module / Log / Output To drop-downs (with their current value), output file button and field, a progress indicator; popup lists take the keyboard when opened from it and give it back to the drop-down; Templates dialog controls named.
  • Shared widgets (widgets.rs): twirl, check box, drop-down, text button, icon button, icon toggle and text fields now carry a role (and state) and draw a focus outline; scroll bars and the dialog title grip are mouse-only (no longer Tab stops that no key can move).
  • Arrow keys no longer nudge selected layers while Effects & Presets or the Render Queue has the focus (as Project already did), and Enter in those panels is the panel's (as in Project), not the Timeline's layer rename.
  • A pick from a menu or drop-down with the mouse leaves no widget with the keyboard focus (egui pauses the application's shortcuts while one has it); only keyboard use moves the focus into and back out of a popup. Tests for both.

Tests added: ui_accessibility_audit, ui_contrast, ui_effects_presets_keyboard (8), ui_settings_keyboard (4), ui_render_queue_keyboard (8).

Commands actually run

  • cargo test -p effectcraft-ui-egui --no-fail-fast: 740 passed, 0 failed, 11 ignored
  • cargo clippy --workspace --all-targets -- -D warnings: clean
  • cargo fmt --all --check: clean
  • cargo xtask layers: ok
  • cargo xtask wasm: ok (32 crates)
  • the audit test against upstream/main (fails with the counts above) and against this branch (passes)

Not run: the full cargo xtask ci (tests of the other crates, assets), the app on a display, any screen reader.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Accessibility

    • Screen readers can identify controls, names, values, and states in Effects & Presets, Render Queue, Settings, and template dialogs.
    • Added keyboard navigation for lists and queues, including selection, folder or row expansion, and control activation. Focused items are outlined and brought into view.
    • Keyboard-opened menus now focus an entry.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Enter and arrow-key actions are handled by the focused panel in more cases, reducing unintended timeline interactions.
    • Nudging no longer moves layers or mask vertices while Project, Effects & Presets, or Render Queue is focused.

…tion for Effects & Presets, Settings and Render Queue

ui_accessibility_audit walks the AccessKit tree and counts unnamed or roleless controls per panel (zero required for Project, Effects & Presets, Settings and the Render Queue; a ratchet for the rest). Rows are named tree items with selected / open state, the page list is a list with positions, controls carry label and value, the lists take the arrow keys, Home / End, Enter and Space, popup lists take the focus when they open. ui_contrast checks the theme tokens against WCAG 2.

The merge of main brought a double-click label hit area on the Properties
transform rows that had no accessible name; give it one so the audit ratchet holds.

Merged current main into this branch (b4c1569); the conflicts were in effects_presets.rs and settings.rs, and I kept both sides.

Two changes beyond the conflict markers, so they don't surprise you in the diff:

  • effects_presets.rs: preset_row now takes on_apply as impl Fn(), because main made the apply argument a closure and the old .clone() on it no longer compiles.
  • properties.rs: main added a double-click hit area on the transform rows (Null layers: the Video switch hides them in the Composition viewer, as in After Effects #1332) without an accessible name. That pushed this PR's audit test over its baseline (Properties:default: 55 findings, 45 allowed). I gave the hit area a button role and the property name; the test passes again.

Checked: fmt, clippy -D warnings, layers, assets, and the full effectcraft-ui-egui test run.

Resolve conflicts in the Effects & Presets panel, the arrow-key nudge and the
docs; update two a11y tests to the prefs-based favourites.

Merged upstream/main into this branch. Conflicted: crates/ui-egui/src/panels/effects_presets.rs (kept the keyboard navigation, took main's PresetRef drag-and-drop and prefs-based favourites), crates/ui-egui/src/menus.rs (nudge: kept the panels that own the arrow keys, took main's mask-vertex nudge #1288), docs/gaps.md and docs/ui-parity.md (kept both sides' header text and changelog rows). Two tests (ui_accessibility_audit, ui_effects_presets_keyboard) adapted to favourites living in session.prefs. Checks run: cargo fmt --all --check and cargo check --workspace --all-targets, both pass. No tests were run locally. Note: #1341 contains this branch, so the same merge was made there.

Keyboard users may be unable to Tab into the Effects & Presets list while its Tab-stop row is scrolled out of view. The impact is limited to a narrow accessibility case with a mouse-click workaround, so the change is mergeable with awareness of this follow-up.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

The list loses its only Tab stop when the Tab-stop row is not drawn.

Nav::tab_stop makes exactly one row focusable. That row is the cursor row, or the first row when there is no cursor. folder_row, effect_row and preset_row return before ui.interact when the row is outside list. The star is focusable only on the Tab-stop row, so it disappears with that row.

Trigger: the user moves the cursor to a row, then scrolls it out of view with the wheel. Another trigger is no cursor while the list is scrolled down. In both cases no row in the list has a focusable sense. Tab goes from the options button past the whole list. A keyboard user can only reach the list again with a mouse click on a row.

Fix: choose the Tab stop from the drawn rows. Make the cursor row the Tab stop only if it is drawn this pass, otherwise use the first drawn row. One way is to store the cursor row's top from the last pass and compare it with the visible range before you push rows. Another way is to compute the visible range from nav.offset and list.height() and test top against it in tab_stop.
