Release 0.14.2

Squash-merge with chore(release): 0.14.2 to trigger trusted publishing.

The review fix preserves the complete detected npm version, including prerelease and build metadata. Numeric parts remain available for compatibility checks. Existing tests cover parsing, template rendering and the create-command path.

On Node.js 22.18.0, which ships npm 10.9.3, create-prisma 0.14.1 stops before it writes any files:

$ npx create-prisma@latest my-app
npm 10.9.3 is unsupported. Required: npm 11.6.0 or newer. Older npm releases can crash while resolving Prisma dependencies. Run npm install --global npm@11, then retry create-prisma.

Decision

The Prisma team decided on 2026-10-08 that every Prisma 8 tool, create-prisma included, supports what Prisma ORM supports: Node.js 22.18+ or 24.11+, with the npm those Node.js releases ship. On Node.js 22 that is npm 10, so create-prisma now accepts npm 10. This PR removes the npm 11.6.0 minimum, makes CI test with npm 10, and stops generated projects from declaring an npm that Node.js 22.18 cannot run.

Why the check existed

  1. npm 10 used to crash while installing Composer's dependency tree, with Cannot read properties of null (reading 'edgesOut').
  2. The fix in npm's resolver (npm/cli#8448) shipped in npm 11.6.0.
  3. So create-prisma checked the npm version before scaffolding and asked users on older npm to upgrade.

Why it is safe to remove now

Node.js 22.18.0 still ships npm 10.9.3, and npm 10.9.3 now installs every project create-prisma generates. The crash depended on the shape of the dependency tree, so the tree has probably changed since the check was added. I did not compare the old and new trees.

The evidence covers the versions this release pins: Composer 0.28.0 (@prisma/composer and @prisma/composer-prisma-cloud) and prisma 8.0.0-rc.21. Later pins are covered by the CI change below.

Each run used a fresh node:22.18.0-bookworm-slim container (Node.js 22.18.0, npm 10.9.3) on linux/arm64, as an unprivileged user. create-prisma was built from this branch and ran with --package-manager npm --no-deploy, so it ran npm install itself. Then I deleted node_modules and package-lock.json and installed again from scratch.

Template Provider create-prisma, including its npm install Second install from scratch
minimal (default) PostgreSQL passed, 450 packages passed
minimal MongoDB passed, 465 packages passed
hono PostgreSQL passed, 452 packages passed
hono MongoDB, TypeScript contract passed, 467 packages passed
next PostgreSQL passed, 732 packages passed
turborepo (npm workspaces) PostgreSQL passed, 453 packages passed
astro, elysia, nest, nuxt, svelte, tanstack-start PostgreSQL passed (run by the reviewer) passed

All 10 templates pass with PostgreSQL. MongoDB was tested with minimal and hono only. No run hit the edgesOut crash. In every run, the prisma orm init, prisma contract emit and (for PostgreSQL) prisma migration plan steps also passed through npm exec on npm 10.

One batch of 5 parallel runs stalled on the second install from scratch, with no error. Its first install had also been three times slower than usual, so I suspect the network. Two more batches of 5, one on npm 10 and one on npm 11.6.0, all passed. Nothing ties the stall to npm 10.

Changes

  • src/utils/package-manager.ts: remove the npm minimum. The check that npm is installed and reports a version stays. The Yarn 4.10 minimum stays.
  • Generated package.json files declared "packageManager": "npm@12.2.0", which needs Node.js ^22.22.2. The projects support ^22.18.0. They now declare the npm version create-prisma detected when it is npm 10 or 11, which run on every supported Node.js release. Otherwise they declare npm@10.9.3, the npm Node.js 22.18.0 ships. The field stays because Turborepo needs it. The check before scaffolding writes the same fallback into its probe directory.
  • .github/workflows/publish.yml: both publish jobs installed npm 11.6.0 before the packed CLI smoke test, so CI never used npm 10. The npm 11.6.0 install now runs just before npm publish, where trusted publishing needs it. The smoke test scaffolds the default template, which runs npm install, then builds and typechecks it. It now does that on Node.js 22.18.0 with npm 10.9.3, so a future pin that brings back the crash fails CI.
  • scripts/smoke-node.mjs: fails unless the generated packageManager is the npm the smoke test ran, and names that npm in its success message.
  • tests/install.test.ts: the npm test is split into "accepts any npm version and returns it" (10.9.3, 11.6.0, 12.2.0) and "rejects npm output that is not a version". A new test checks the declared npm for detected npm 10.9.7, 11.6.0, 12.2.0, 9.9.4 and no detected version. The template matrix test checks npm@10.9.3. A test of the create command with a stubbed npm 11.6.2-pre.1 checks that the detected version reaches package.json. A test fails if the minimum Node.js version changes without the npm fallback being updated.
  • README.md: replace the npm 11.6 requirement with a note that the npm shipped with a supported Node.js release works, including npm 10 on Node.js 22.

The CLI now declares and checks ^22.18.0 || ^24.11.0 || >=26.0.0. It skips this check on Bun and Deno. Generated template engines are unchanged; Nuxt keeps its higher range.

Testing

  • Published create-prisma@0.14.2 verified in a fresh directory on Node 22.18.0 with npm 10.9.3: scaffolding, dependency installation, build and typecheck pass. The generated app declares npm@10.9.3. Telemetry was disabled.
  • Final Windows CI, npm 10 packed-package CI and trusted-publishing release workflow pass. All review threads are resolved.
  • bun run typecheck, bun run check (format and lint) and bun run test:unit: all pass (106 tests).
  • The e2e test for a missing npm passes.
  • node scripts/smoke-node.mjs passes in node:22.18.0-bookworm-slim with npm 10.9.3, and with npm 11.6.0 installed (the project then declares npm@11.6.0).
  • A turborepo project generated on npm 10.9.3 declares npm@10.9.3, and one generated on npm 11.6.0 declares npm@11.6.0. Both install.
  • The npm 10 installs above.

Alternatives considered

  • Lower the minimum to an npm 10 release instead of removing it. No npm 10 release is known to fail on today's tree, so any npm 10 cut-off would be arbitrary. A minimum would also turn away users on a supported Node.js release, which goes against the policy.
  • Keep the check and tell Node.js 22 users to upgrade npm. This makes create-prisma stricter than Prisma ORM, and new users on Node.js 22 fail on their first command.
  • Always declare npm@10.9.3 in generated projects. This is simpler, but under Corepack it would switch users who chose a newer supported npm back to npm 10. Recording the detected version keeps their choice.

Agent: maui-32

create-prisma supports what Prisma ORM supports: Node.js 22.18+ or 24.11+ with the npm those releases ship. It refused npm older than 11.6.0 because npm 10 used to crash with "Cannot read properties of null (reading 'edgesOut')" while installing Composer's dependency tree. npm 10.9.3 on Node.js 22.18.0 now installs every generated project, so drop the npm minimum. The missing-npm check, the Yarn minimum and the Node.js 22.18 check stay.

Both publish jobs installed npm 11.6.0 before the smoke test, so CI never ran create-prisma or a generated project's npm install with npm 10. Install npm 11.6.0 just before `npm publish`, where trusted publishing needs it. The smoke test now runs on Node.js 22.18.0 with npm 10.9.3 and reports the npm version it used.

Generated projects declared `packageManager: "npm@12.2.0"`, but npm 12.2.0 needs Node.js ^22.22.2, and the projects support ^22.18.0. Write the npm version create-prisma detected when it is npm 10 or 11, which run on every supported Node.js release. Otherwise write npm 10.9.3, the npm Node.js 22.18.0 ships. The pre-scaffold probe uses the same fallback. Split the npm version test into its accept and reject cases.

A unit test runs the create command with a stubbed npm 11.6.2 and checks the generated package.json declares it. The CI smoke test checks the generated packageManager matches the npm it ran. The probe test checks the exact parsed version. The npm fallback and allowed majors now sit next to the Node.js version they assume, and a test fails if the minimum Node.js version changes without them.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • New projects record the detected npm version when using npm 10 or 11; other npm versions use npm 10.9.3 in the generated manifest.
    • Supported runtimes include Node.js 22.18.0 or newer, 24.11.0 or newer, and 26 or newer. Bun and Deno bypass the Node.js version check.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Project creation verifies that the generated manifest’s npm version matches the installed version.
    • Preview and release checks run the packed-CLI smoke test before installing npm for publishing.
  • Documentation
    • Clarified supported package managers and Nuxt’s Node.js requirements.

Walkthrough

Package-manager verification now returns the detected version. Project scaffolding uses it to select the generated packageManager value, retaining detected npm 10 and 11 versions and using npm 10.9.3 as the fallback. Smoke tests check that the generated manifest matches the installed npm version. Preview and release workflows run the smoke test before installing npm 11.6.0. The README updates its npm guidance.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Merge Risk

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to acb0f

The change broadens Node.js and npm support and writes the detected npm version into generated projects. Only a narrow, unverified risk remains: an npm 10 release newer than the tested 10.9.3 may fail to install a generated dependency tree. Owners should be aware of this, but it is not a blocker.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to acb0f

The changes remain within the existing project-creation and publishing flows. Version validation and validation-before-scaffolding ordering are preserved, and publishing still uses the required npm upgrade. No introduced security issue was established; uncertainty remains around compatibility across the broader accepted runtime and npm versions.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The changed version flow affects the caller-selected project manifest and its downstream package-manager tooling. Installation retains the caller's existing subprocess authority. Publishing still runs in the existing privileged release jobs; the PR does not add permissions or newly admit fork PRs to preview publishing.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Manifest-based manager detection retains its supported-manager allowlist. Probing uses the selected manager with fixed version arguments, and subprocess execution passes command and argument arrays without enabling a shell. The newly preserved version string is manifest data, not an executable name or installation argument.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Version propagation is isolated between ordinary invocations, but it is not an atomic guarantee that the same executable remains installed between probing and installation. Concurrent target-directory mutation and executable replacement remain pre-existing local-environment assumptions, not established new privilege-escalation paths.

create-prisma accepted any Node.js from 22.18, including Node.js 23 and 24.0 to 24.10, which Prisma ORM does not support. The startup check now accepts `^22.18.0 || ^24.11.0 || >=26.0.0`, names that range in its refusal message, and `engines.node` declares it. The check applies only on Node.js: Bun and Deno report their own Node.js compatibility version, which says nothing about the user's Node.js. The README states the supported Node.js versions, package managers and the Nuxt exception in one place.
