Summary

Optional monitoring now creates a PodMonitor and a metrics ingress policy while preserving access to Gateway data listeners. Monitoring is disabled by default. Invalid selectors fail without granting partial access, and owned monitoring resources are removed when disabled or when no usable listeners remain.

This PR is scoped to monitoring and the reserved metrics port contract it needs:

  • Reserved health/metrics port 9902, served through a dedicated admin.metrics_address so health and metrics no longer need public admin access.
  • Data-plane labels used by the PodMonitor and NetworkPolicy selectors.
  • RBAC for NetworkPolicy and PodMonitor, including the upgrade note for applying RBAC before the image.
  • The monitoring resources, cleanup on disable or with no usable listeners, documentation, and tests.
  • Routeless listeners terminate with a 404 static response, which Praxis 0.7.5 requires instead of an empty router chain.

The HA rollout, rollout-test assets, routing/cluster-name/hostname changes, route parent status, and Deployment rollout-policy changes live in the rollout branch (#24). The Praxis 0.7.5 image bump is required for the metrics contract because generated configuration now uses admin.metrics_address.

Closes #23.

Validation

On Linux x86_64 (Fedora 42, Rust 1.96.0):

  • 474 unit tests and 7 doctests passed.
  • cargo clippy --all-targets -- -D warnings, cargo +nightly-2026-03-28 fmt --all -- --check, and rustdoc -D warnings passed.
  • Unit coverage exercises monitoring disabled without the CRD, enabled with both resources, stale-resource cleanup, selector validation, reserved-port rejection, reserved-port exclusion from listeners and Service ports, and routeless 404 generation.
  • The integration workflow runs the monitoring test in disabled mode before the CRD is installed, enabled mode after installing it, and disabled mode again to verify cleanup; each phase matches the operator Deployment's PRAXIS_MONITORING_ENABLED.

Walkthrough

The operator now targets Praxis 0.7.5 and uses port 9902 for health and metrics. It rejects Gateway listeners on that reserved port and removes owned child resources when no usable listeners remain. Optional monitoring adds PodMonitor and metrics NetworkPolicy creation, reconciliation, and cleanup.

The pinned Praxis image changes from 0.5.2 to 0.7.5. Generated configuration uses admin.metrics_address at 0.0.0.0:9902; Deployment probe expectations and documentation use port 9902 for health and metrics.

Listeners on port 9902 receive PortUnavailable status and are excluded from route and data-plane listener selection. When no usable listeners remain, the operator deletes owned Gateway child resources using UID and resource-version preconditions.

When monitoring is enabled, reconciliation applies a PodMonitor and a metrics NetworkPolicy. When disabled, it cleans up owned monitoring resources. The changes add configuration defaults, selector validation, RBAC permissions, unit tests, and an ignored integration test.

Route-only changes can be reported Accepted before the running pods load the new configuration. Upgrades that skip the updated RBAC can fail Gateway reconciliation even with monitoring disabled. The new integration test uses a routeless Gateway that Praxis 0.7.5 will not start, so it may time out in CI.

Explanation

[#23] Monitoring is opt-in. monitoring.rs builds a PodMonitor and a NetworkPolicy that restricts metrics ingress to the configured monitoring namespace and pods while preserving listener access. Unit tests cover resource generation and enablement. An ignored integration test covers enabled and disabled reconciliation. This assessment did not run the tests.

The summary does not show the separate HA rollout work. Focused diff inspections were unavailable, so this assessment uses the supplied whole-PR summary.

AWS validation for commit 5f42058: cargo test -p praxis-operator --lib passed all 478 tests.

Addressed CodeRabbit findings in this update: routeless 404 response, hostname expansion allocation, strict monitoring selector parsing, monitoring NetworkPolicy listener-port ingress, monitoring child cleanup when disabled/deleted, and RBAC documentation.

The loaded-configuration acknowledgment concern remains open for follow-up because this operator branch has no trustworthy data-plane acknowledgment endpoint/signal to consume; Deployment rollout readiness alone is intentionally not being presented as equivalent.

Derive the metrics port constants from the Deployment constants.

METRICS_PORT and METRICS_PORT_NAME are independent of ADMIN_PORT and the Deployment's "admin" port name. If either Deployment value changes, the PodMonitor and the NetworkPolicy will target the wrong port. Share one constant for each value across monitoring.rs and deployment.rs. A previous review already raised this point.

Addressed the latest review:

  • The requeue selection now uses 15s when the Gateway can accept traffic, 60s for the no-usable-listeners state after delete_children runs, and 2s for every other path. Cleanup still runs on the first pass.
  • monitoring.rs uses ADMIN_PORT and ADMIN_PORT_NAME from context.rs; the PodMonitor and NetworkPolicy target the same port and name as the Deployment.
  • The PR is now scoped to monitoring and the reserved metrics port contract. The HA rollout, rollout-test assets, routing/cluster-name/hostname, route parent status, and Deployment rollout-policy changes were removed and live in feat(k8s): add operator rollout acceptance #24. Tests and clippy/fmt pass after the trim.
  • Added docstrings to the monitoring, cleanup, and reserved-port functions and tests touched by the diff.

Opt-in PodMonitor and metrics-only NetworkPolicy for managed data
planes, with ownership-checked cleanup when monitoring is disabled or no
usable listeners remain. The reserved metrics port 9902 stays out of the
data-plane listeners and Service ports, and a listener requesting it is
rejected without blocking valid siblings.

The metrics contract moves the admin endpoint to a dedicated
admin.metrics_address, so health and metrics no longer need public admin
access. Only this monitoring work and its contract stay in this change;
the HA rollout, rollout-test, routing, hostname, route-status, and
deployment rollout-policy changes live in the rollout branch.

comparing the recreated policy and PodMonitor contents with the expected
resources, rather than only checking existence. Update the assertion flow around
await_monitoring_present to verify both returned resources match their expected
values.
- Around line 1895-1899: Update the Gateway configuration setup for the
routeless published-proxy test so it generates a Praxis 0.7.5-valid chain that
returns HTTP 404 without defining routes. Preserve the existing route-filter
behavior and ensure the Deployment can become ready before the response.status()
assertion.

- Pass the borrowed usable listeners into route attachment and namespace
filtering; both helpers now accept Borrow<GatewayListeners>, so a
reconcile no longer clones every listener.
- Terminate a listener with no routes with a 404 static response, which
Praxis 0.7.5 needs instead of an empty router chain, and update the
  generate tests accordingly.
- Compare the recreated NetworkPolicy and PodMonitor with their expected
specs after the listener is restored, not only their existence.
- Run the monitoring test's enabled and disabled-cleanup phases in CI,
installing the PodMonitor CRD and toggling the operator Deployment's
PRAXIS_MONITORING_ENABLED between runs; the disabled no-CRD phase
already runs with the integration suite.
