Preserve one replica by default; support the praxis.sh/replicas annotation, zero-unavailable rolling updates, a PodDisruptionBudget, hostname/zone spread, and a five-second preStop delay within the existing grace period.
Generate Praxis 0.7.5-compatible listener-scoped configuration with dedicated metrics-port probes, one worker, and a one-CPU limit.
Roll for listener/TLS topology changes; allow route/filter changes and Secret contents to hot-reload.
Reserve port 9902 per listener while preserving valid siblings. Use the same supported, unreserved, non-conflicting listener selection for config generation and the cleanup decision. Remove only owned proxy children when no usable listeners remain, with UID/resourceVersion deletion guards, and recreate them after recovery.
Reconcile HTTPRoute parent rejection when a Gateway listener moves to or from port 9902, preserving valid sibling parents.
Run the shared acceptance harness against source-built and published default proxy images in separate fresh KIND clusters. Retain diagnostics before cleanup. Keep only the test backends on the KIND control plane so worker drain isolates proxy availability.
Why
Issue praxis-proxy/praxis#1302 requires availability evidence from an operator-managed Kubernetes deployment. Deployment/resource behavior belongs here; the reusable load driver, disruption harness, TLS polling fix, and release gate belong in praxis-proxy/praxis#1494.
Validation
474 operator unit tests and 7 doctests passed. Standard strict all-target Clippy, pinned nightly formatting, integration-test compilation, and actionlint passed. The normal release Containerfile image built successfully.
Both targeted Kubernetes transition tests passed against each proxy image (2 tests per image). They cover initial reserved-port rejection, valid siblings, a protocol-conflicting listener pair, removal of Deployment/Service/ConfigMap/PDB and proxy Pods, recreation after recovery, existing route-parent rejection, mixed valid/reserved parents, and route configuration/status recovery. Route fixtures use a real ready echo backend.
On AWS / four-node KIND / Kubernetes 1.32.2, hot reload with the new operator passed 493,269 requests using the previously validated cached source image, followed by cluster deletion and 386,356 requests using published Praxis 0.7.5: zero failures in both cases. Distinct cluster UIDs confirmed independent cluster state.
The shared suite previously passed all seven scenarios against both source and published images; see test(k8s): add rollout acceptance harness praxis#1494 for that evidence. The full expanded 28-test Kubernetes integration suite was not rerun in this follow-up.
Optional integration-feature Clippy has pre-existing lint debt (87 diagnostics on the assessed prior baseline); standard required Clippy passes. Unrelated test lint cleanup is outside this PR.
Dependencies
Merge praxis-proxy/praxis#1494 first; CI pins the validated companion harness. Runtime config-hash convergence remains dependent on praxis-proxy/praxis#1296. Optional PodMonitor and metrics NetworkPolicy work remains separate in #23.
Upstream fork test workflows require maintainer approval. Fresh CodeRabbit checks may remain pending or rate-limited after pushes.
Listeners without routes return HTTP 404, and scoped route expansion avoids redundant clones. These follow-up fixes passed all 474 unit tests and strict Clippy. The monitoring follow-up PR #25 also verifies the 404 behavior against published Praxis 0.7.5.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Gateway deployments default to one replica and support configurable replica counts, with pods spread across zones and hosts.
Rolling updates keep existing replicas available while new pods start.
Improvements
Route and filter changes can take effect without restarting pods; listener and TLS topology changes trigger a rollout.
Pods allow time for graceful shutdown and use the metrics endpoint for health checks.
The Praxis data plane is updated to version 0.7.5.
Bug Fixes
Listeners requesting reserved port 9902 are rejected without affecting other valid listeners.
Gateway resources are cleaned up when no usable listeners remain, and route status updates when listener eligibility changes.
Documentation
Updated deployment and configuration guidance to reflect replica settings, rollout behavior, and health checks.

Walkthrough
The change updates Praxis to version 0.7.5, revises generated data-plane configuration and cluster names, and changes how listener and TLS topology drives deployment rollouts. It adds reserved-port handling, Gateway replica coverage, integration tests, and a Kubernetes rollout workflow.
Changes: Praxis configuration and Gateway rollouts
Praxis image references change to 0.7.5. Generated configuration uses the metrics address and runtime thread setting, and route chains are scoped to listeners. Cluster and merged backend names use revised formats. Routeless listeners receive only the request_id filter.
The rollout hash uses listener and TLS topology. Deployments use explicit rolling-update settings, zone and hostname spread constraints, a CPU limit, metrics-port probes, and a five-second pre-stop delay.
Port 9902 is reserved, and a listener using it is rejected without blocking valid listeners. When no usable listener remains, the controller deletes owned child resources. Gateway changes trigger route status reconciliation.
Kubernetes rollout test and workflow .github/workflows/rollout.yaml, deploy/rollout-test/*, tests/integration.rs, CHANGELOG.md
The rollout fixture defines a Gateway, routes, backend services, and a test namespace. The workflow runs the rollout suite and attempts to collect cluster details on failure. Integration tests check health endpoints, traffic responses, and replica readiness.

Update the stale config-hash description.
This PR changes the praxis.sh/config-hash annotation to a listener and TLS topology hash (rollout_hash in src/controller/praxis_config.rs). The text still says any configuration change triggers a rolling update. docs/configuration.md Line 157 and the DeploymentParams.config_hash documentation say the opposite: route and filter changes hot-reload.

Prevent the metrics endpoint from colliding with Gateway listener port 9902.
A valid supported Gateway listener on port 9902 reaches Praxis as 0.0.0.0:9902, which overlaps the generated admin.metrics_address. Praxis rejects this configuration before protocol registration, so the data plane cannot start. The Kubernetes container-port deduplication does not prevent the bind conflict.
Reserve 9902 before applying the configuration, or move the metrics endpoint to a port that cannot overlap a Gateway listener and update the related probes and Service wiring consistently.
