fix(desktop): macOS apps on a read-only volume turn updates off instead of failing at install - #31261
On macOS, T3 Code opened from its mounted disk image, from a read-only drive, or from App Translocation (an app opened from Downloads with the quarantine flag) still checks for and downloads updates. The install then fails inside quitAndInstall, after the backends have already been stopped. Squirrel.Mac checks for a read-only volume (SQRLUpdater -isRunningOnReadOnlyVolume) only when the native checkForUpdates runs. Because the desktop sets autoInstallOnAppQuit(false), electron-updater's MacUpdater reaches that call only inside quitAndInstall.
Change
At startup, a packaged macOS build checks whether it can write to its .app bundle (two levels above resourcesPath). If the check fails with EROFS, getAutoUpdateDisabledReason reports automatic updates as off: "Automatic updates are off because T3 Code is running from a read-only location, such as a disk image. Move T3 Code to the Applications folder and open it from there."
The existing disabled state stops the update check, download and install. Settings shows the message, and remote desktop-update requests already read the same reason.
Any other failure, such as EACCES for a bundle the user cannot write, leaves updates on as before, because ShipIt can ask for authorization.
Moving the app to Applications and reopening it turns updates back on.
Installs on a writable external drive are unchanged.
apps/desktop/src/updates/DesktopUpdates.test.ts, test turns updates off only when the macOS app runs from a read-only volume. It covers two cases:
A bundle check that fails with EROFS must leave updates disabled, with a message, and no check after a minute. On main the test fails with expected 'checking' to equal 'disabled'.
A bundle check that fails with EACCES must still run a check. Treating every failure as read-only fails this case with expected 'disabled' to not equal 'disabled'.
Result: 41/41 passed.
vp run check:changed passed: format, lint, knip, typecheck of 2 packages, and tests in 1 file.
Runtime transcript: the same probe run through the real @effect/platform-nodeNodeServices file system on Linux, against a tmpfs remounted read-only, a writable directory and a missing path. A read-only mount maps to _tag: "Unknown" with an EROFS cause:
probe.mjs copies the isReadOnlyMacBundle expression from DesktopUpdates.ts and runs it under Effect.runPromise with NodeServices.layer.
Evidence table: no captures. The change adds no render path. The message appears in the existing "Updates unavailable" slot in Settings, and only on macOS.

cannot-verify macos: nobody has run this against a mounted disk image or a translocated app. XNU returns EROFS from access(W_OK) on a MNT_RDONLY mount, the same flag Squirrel's statfs check reads. If it did not, behaviour would be the same as on main.

…read-only volume
A macOS bundle on a read-only volume (mounted disk image, App Translocation)
reports updates as idle, checks and downloads, and only fails in
quitAndInstall. These tests reproduce #31244: the harness gains a
readOnlyBundle option whose write-access checks fail with EROFS as Node
reports it, and the test expects updates disabled with a reason and no check.

A Mac build opened from its disk image, a read-only drive, or App
Translocation checked for and downloaded updates, then failed inside
quitAndInstall after the backends had already stopped: Squirrel.Mac
refuses to replace a bundle on a read-only volume.
At service construction, packaged macOS builds probe the .app bundle
for write access. Only an EROFS failure counts. getAutoUpdateDisabledReason
then reports updates as off, with a message telling the user to move
T3 Code to the Applications folder. Other access failures leave updates on.

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — Read-only macOS installations now disable updates upfront and explain how to restore them, instead of failing during installation. A human must accept this change to default update availability for affected installations.

For packaged macOS apps, the updater checks whether the bundle’s parent directory is writable. An EROFS failure disables automatic updates with a read-only-location message. Tests distinguish this case from EACCES, which does not disable updates.

The updater checks write access for packaged macOS apps and disables updates when the check fails with EROFS. The test harness simulates EROFS and EACCES, and the test verifies the distinct update behavior for each error.
pingdotgg/t3code#30784: Both changes disable updates and provide a reason when the installed app cannot self-update. This change covers read-only macOS locations, not Linux package capability reporting.
pingdotgg/t3code#10685: Both concern update replacement reliability. This change addresses read-only macOS locations and does not address writable external-volume replacement.

Explanation
The description covers the required Problem, Change, Scope and approval, and Verification sections. It explains the behavior, test coverage, validation results, issue scope, and the unverified macOS scenarios. Minor template details, such as an explicit approval comment and agent model and harness, are not included, but the description is otherwise complete and on topic.

Explanation
All changed files support the read-only-location objective in [#31244]. The changes are:
DesktopUpdates.ts: a macOS bundle write check and the EROFS-based disabled reason.
DesktopUpdates.test.ts: tests for the EROFS and EACCES cases.
updatesTestHarness.ts: the bundleWriteError option, used to simulate the write failure in tests.
The PR does not change the install path, ShipIt handling, or unrelated update behavior. No unrelated production change was found in the summaries. The reviewed diff was not read in full. The assessment uses the whole-PR summary, which is consistent with the current description.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Directly linked issue [#31244] has two coding objectives.
Objective 1, read-only location: Met. DesktopUpdates.ts checks the packaged macOS app bundle for write access. Only an EROFS failure sets the disabled reason. The message names the read-only location and the Applications folder. The existing disabled state stops checks, downloads, and installs. DesktopUpdates.test.ts covers the EROFS case (updates disabled, no check) and the EACCES case (check runs). This matches the issue's "automatic updates are off and Settings explains why" for disk images and App Translocation.
Objective 2, writable external drive: Not met. The issue requires the copy on an external drive to be replaced in one step and to relaunch. The issue describes a cross-volume EXDEV fallback in ShipIt that is not atomic. The PR description states that installs on a writable external drive are unchanged. The change summaries list no code for atomic replacement, staging on the target volume, or interruption handling. No test covers this path. The PR description still says "Fixes #31244", which claims the whole issue.
Note: the EACCES case leaves updates enabled. The issue says updates should be off when the app cannot replace itself. This is a deliberate design choice in the PR, and it is documented.
Resolution
Choose one of these before approval:
Implement the writable external-drive replacement objective from [#31244]. Add an automated test that covers an install from a writable non-startup volume. The test must show that replacement happens in one step, or that interruption leaves the bundle intact.
Split the external-drive objective into a separate issue. Link this PR to [#31244] as partial work, for example with "Refs" instead of "Fixes", and state in the PR that the external-drive objective remains open. Update the linked-issue relationship to match.

The stub fails every writable access call, whatever the path. The test therefore cannot tell whether DesktopUpdates checks the app bundle ("/" in this harness) or another writable path. A change that checks the wrong path would still pass the EROFS case. Gate the failure on the bundle path so the test fails when the checked path changes.

Check the directory containing the app bundle.
resourcesPath is <app>.app/Contents/Resources, so the current path resolves to <app>.app. ShipIt replaces that bundle entry in its containing directory. If the bundle is writable but its containing directory is not, this check succeeds and quitAndInstall can fail after the update downloads.
