Newly created iOS Simulators have no usage timestamps. The pinned expo-device-hub 0.19.1 filters them out of /api/devices, so T3 cannot list them or resolve their IDs before opening them.
Fixes#16083. The same defect affects a fresh Simulator created after other devices have already been used.
Change
Supplement the recent-device inventory with the hub's existing /vendor/serve-sim/grid/api inventory on iOS-capable local and SSH hosts. This keeps the hub's availability and single-device restrictions, preserves existing entries, and accepts only iOS runtimes. A failed supplemental request retains the original inventory and reports a warning.
SSH availability stays lazy so newly available Xcode tools can reveal fresh Simulators without reconnecting. Each listing shares one availability result for both platforms, including when neither is available. Missing iOS tools are rechecked only on macOS; Android checks remain active on every supported host. The existing boot, stream attachment, and session paths remain in use.
Scope and approval
This is one focused repair of an obvious discovery bug, within the guide's small bug-fix exception: expose available Simulators through the established device workflow without requiring a first-boot workaround. It adds no setting, client workflow, wire contract, dependency patch, or migration.
The existing triage identifies the timestamp filter. This verification answers the request to recheck a newer hub on macOS against 0.19.1; it does not claim prior approval of this implementation. Related alternative: #24027 enumerates simctl separately; this patch uses the hub's existing session-aware API.
Verification
The new local/SSH adapter regression failed before the repair because the fresh iPhone was absent. It now discovers that device and verifies the normal boot and stream-attachment request bodies. Other cases cover duplicate precedence, non-iOS exclusion, unavailable-platform gating, failed/malformed grid responses, and recovery without losing existing inventory or diagnostics.
The SSH host regression also failed before lazy availability was added: installing iOS tools after connection still returned no fresh iPhone. The existing test now covers iOS and Android availability transitions, avoids repeated positive probes, and verifies exactly one probe per refresh when both platforms are unavailable. Repeated negative refreshes still discover newly installed tools immediately.
vp test run src/device/SshDeviceHost.test.ts src/device/sshDeviceScript.test.ts src/device/DeviceHubOperations.test.ts from apps/server: 13 tests passed, including a Linux host that avoids probing permanently unavailable iOS support.
vp run check:changed: 87 tests across 7 files passed, plus format, lint, knip, GraphQL generation, and affected-package typechecks. Independent primary review passed after the SSH finding was fixed. The clarity pass required no further source changes.
Runtime discovery check on macOS arm64 with a real, task-owned iPhone 18 Pro / iOS 27.0 Simulator in a private CoreSimulator device set. Its plist had neither lastUsedAt nor lastBootedAt. A read-only xcrun shim routed inventory requests to that private set. The actual pinned hub request handler and current T3 adapter produced:
Fixture: available, Shutdown, no usage timestamps
GET /api/devices: simulators=[]; errors=[]
T3 DeviceHubOperations.list: fresh iPhone present, booted=false, version="iOS 27.0"
Same adapter with hub restricted to another device ID: devices=[]
The fixture was never booted and was removed afterward. No live installed dependency, live T3 userdata, shared service, or other session's devices were changed. Actual Simulator boot, stream rendering, Device panel interaction, and a real SSH host were not exercised; boot/attachment requests and SSH routing are covered at the integration boundary.
Rollback is a code revert. This changes local/SSH iOS discovery only and persists no new data. It adds one grid inventory request on iOS-capable hosts; supplemental failure preserves the existing listing.
Implemented and verified with GPT-6.1 Sol (high reasoning) in the Codex harness through T3 Code.
Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — Device discovery now includes never-used iOS simulators on local and SSH hosts without automatically starting them. Existing results remain available if the additional discovery request fails.

Walkthrough
The device hub adds valid iOS simulators from the grid to its inventory when iOS is available. Local and SSH hosts report platform availability. Grid failures retain existing devices and add a warning.
Local hosts check whether xcrun simctl help succeeds. Local and SSH hosts provide iOS and Android availability. SSH probe responses include the host platform. Tests cover availability changes and update fixtures.

Explanation
The title "fix(server): discover never-used iOS simulators" matches the main change. The PR adds a supplemental grid-inventory request so that fresh iOS simulators without usage timestamps appear in the device list. The title is short, uses a conventional commit prefix, and names the primary change.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the template sections: Problem, Change, Scope and approval, and Verification. The Problem section states the defect and links issue #16083. The Change section explains the supplemental grid inventory and the SSH availability behavior. The Scope section cites the small bug-fix exception, links the triage comment, and states that no settings, wire contracts, or migrations are added. The Verification section lists focused test commands, a macOS arm64 runtime check with observed output, and stated gaps (no real Simulator boot, stream rendering, Device panel interaction, or real SSH host). The description ends with the model and harness line that the template requests. The Problem section does not give explicit reproduction steps beyond the fresh-simulator condition, and the verification section is detailed rather than terse. These gaps are minor.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
[#16083] requires T3 Code to list iOS simulators that have no usage timestamps, so the user can use them without a first-boot workaround. The whole-PR diff adds a supplemental request to ${origin}${vendorPrefix("ios")}/grid/api in DeviceHubOperations.ts. The request runs only when available.ios is true. Grid devices are added only when their runtime matches ^iOS-\d+(?:-\d+)*$ and they are not already listed as iOS devices, so existing hub entries keep precedence. LocalDeviceHost.ts and SshDeviceHost.ts supply availablePlatforms. The incremental change since the prior review makes local iOS availability require xcrun simctl help to exit 0 without timeout. This matches the SSH behavior. It does not remove the grid listing path. The prior review reported a macOS fixture check where a never-booted iPhone appeared in DeviceHubOperations.list while the pinned hub returned no simulators. The current tests cover fresh-device discovery, duplicate precedence, non-iOS exclusion, availability gating, and failed or malformed grid responses. The issue offered two options. The implementation follows the option that lists the devices. Real Simulator boot, stream rendering, and SSH routing on a real host were not exercised. The listing requirement does not depend on them. The reused prior PASS holds for the listing requirement. Uncertainty remains only for a real Xcode host where xcrun simctl help behaves differently than the tested fixtures.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The reviewed whole-PR diff changes areas that support iOS discovery for [#16083]. DeviceHubOperations.ts adds the grid supplement and replaces androidAvailable with availablePlatforms. The Android utility warning filter and AVD listing keep their behavior and now read available.android. LocalDeviceHost.ts adds the xcrun simctl help availability check, which gates the iOS discovery path and matches the SSH availability behavior. It also supplies availablePlatforms to the hub operations. SshDeviceHost.ts requires hostPlatform in the Started response, and sshDeviceScript.ts emits it for the macOS refresh gate. The test files update fixtures and cover the new availability paths. The diff shows no wire contract, dependency, migration, setting, client workflow, or persisted data change. The PR description does not list the simctl help check by name. It does match the iOS availability gating that the PR describes, so it is not a demonstrated unrelated change.

Merged current main into the existing head again without rebasing (20d61a3). Main's #25971 changed the hub listing to a per-platform platformAvailable callback and added a hub-timeout path. I kept this PR's availablePlatforms result, so SSH still runs at most one probe per listing and skips the iOS probe on non-macOS hosts. The new timeout path now reads incompletePlatforms from that result. The DeviceService test fixture wires its iOS ref into it, defaulting to unavailable so other tests make no grid request. vp run check:changed passes, and so do all 214 device tests.

Require a successful xcrun simctl probe for local iOS availability.
isCommandAvailable("xcrun") only resolves the executable. It does not verify that xcrun simctl works. On a macOS host with Command Line Tools but no Xcode, availablePlatforms.ios can therefore be true, causing the grid request and its misleading failure warning. Require xcrun simctl help to exit successfully before reporting local iOS as available.

Fixed Test Server 3 in 63c116a. CI included a new SSH reconnect test from main whose startup fixture lacked the required hostPlatform field. I merged main (4b87a45), reproduced the failure locally, and added the missing fixture field. The reconnect test and existing discovery tests remain intact.
Verification: 14 focused device tests passed. vp run check:changed origin/main passed 89 tests across seven files, format, lint, knip, GraphQL validation, and affected typechecks.
@coderabbitai Fixed the outside-diff local iOS availability finding in 7e1620c. The existing availability check now requires xcrun simctl help to succeed, matching SSH behavior. A failed or timed-out probe reports iOS unavailable, so discovery skips the iOS grid. Android behavior stays unchanged.
I extended the existing availability test with a private fake executable. It failed before the fix, then passed for successful tools, failed tools, and recovery. Android remains available throughout. No live Simulator or service was touched.
Verification: 33 focused device tests passed. vp run check:changed origin/main passed 89 tests across seven files, format, lint, knip, GraphQL validation, and affected typechecks.

@sreejithraman Thanks for the fix in 7e1620c098. Requiring xcrun simctl help to succeed addresses the local iOS availability concern.
Your reported regression test covers tool success, failure, and recovery while Android remains available. I have not independently verified the commit or rerun the checks.
