fix(web): default model row shows Mixed when environments resolve the automatic default differently - #28017
In Settings → Threads with All projects across All environments, the new-thread Model row showed the representative environment's automatic default (for example "6 Astra / Medium") with an effort picker, even when another selected environment resolves its automatic default to a different model. Changing the effort then failed with "Default model not saved: This model is unavailable on ." The row only compared saved values, and two automatic defaults (null) compare equal.
Reproduced on main (961026c) with two real servers paired into one web client: environment A with Codex and Claude, environment B with Codex turned off. Both use the automatic default. All environments shows "6 Astra / Medium"; B alone shows "Opus 5.5 / Medium"; choosing Extra High at All environments is rejected with the toast above.
Change
The Model row now also counts as mixed when the selected environments resolve their default to different models. Each environment's default is resolved against its own providers and model preferences, with the same resolution the row uses for display. The row then behaves as it already does for differing saved values: it shows "Mixed", hides the effort picker, and choosing a model is still checked against every selected environment. Environments whose providers have not loaded yet are skipped.
Focused tests in apps/web/src/components/settings/ProjectDefaultsSettings.browser.test.tsx, 3 passed:
"shows the automatic default model as mixed when environments resolve it differently" fails on main: AssertionError: model picker labelled Mixed: expected null not to be null.
"keeps the shared automatic default editable when environments resolve it alike" covers different catalogs whose hidden defaults land on the same visible model: no Mixed, effort editable.
"resolves each environment against its own model preferences" covers one environment hiding a model through its own preferences while the other does not: Mixed.
vp run check:changed passed: format, lint, knip, typecheck, tests, react compiler.
Manual check in the real web client: the dev server plus a second t3 serve, paired through Settings → Environments, on fresh databases. Environment A has Codex and Claude. Environment B has Codex turned off. Both use the automatic default. A synthetic repository registered as a project on both environments covers project scope.
Rendering: the T3 Code preview browser (Chromium), no device emulation, freeform viewports 1440×1000 and 390×844, prefers-color-scheme light or dark. Frames are saved at the browser's screenshot scale. Before frames run main's version of the one changed component on the same servers. After frames are 6f90719; the PR head only adds a merge of main, which touches neither changed file.
Each attached sheet is Before | After | Diff0 (zero threshold) | DiffT (10% fuzz), captioned with its SHA. The only changed pixels outside the Model row are the Snooze rows' clock times in the All-environments frames at 1440, which advanced between captures.
Recordings (GIF):
On main, at All environments: open the effort menu, pick Extra High. The toast "Default model not saved: This model is unavailable on fs-43…" appears, and the row stays at Medium.
After the fix, with Codex on in both environments: the row is "6 Astra / Medium". Pick Extra High: no toast. Switch the scope to environment B alone: it shows "6 Astra / Extra High", so the edit saved on both.
Not checked: the desktop shell, which wraps the same web component.

These tests reproduce #27997: with every selected environment
on the automatic default model, the Model row compares only the saved nulls,
so it shows the representative environment's resolved model and effort picker
even though another environment resolves to a different model.

Resolve each target's default through the same hidden-model normalization the
row displays, so environments that land on the same visible model stay editable.

Merging targets with the representative's merged settings leaked its model
preferences into environments that store none.

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — The default-model row now shows Mixed when environments resolve the same saved setting to different models. This changes settings presentation without changing saved defaults or model-selection behavior.

Walkthrough
The settings panel now compares resolved default models across scoped environments. It marks the model picker as mixed when targets resolve to different providers or models. Browser tests cover differing and matching resolutions, including environment-specific hidden-model preferences.

Summary
Resolve and compare scoped default models apps/web/src/components/settings/ProjectDefaultsSettings.tsx, apps/web/src/components/settings/ProjectDefaultsSettings.browser.test.tsx
The settings panel merges target settings with client settings, resolves each target’s displayed default model, and compares provider and model selections. Browser tests cover when the picker is mixed and when it remains editable.
Different automatic defaults now show Mixed. An incompatible model may still reject an effort change, as before.

Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue #27997 requires the Model row to expose different automatic defaults across selected environments and to prevent a misleading effort edit. ProjectDefaultsSettings.tsx now resolves each target with that target's merged settings and provider list, compares the resolved provider/model values, shows Mixed, and hides TraitsPicker when they differ. It skips targets without loaded providers. setModel still uses useScopedModelDisabledReason for all selected targets. The added browser tests cover differing resolutions, equal visible resolutions, and environment-specific model preferences.

Explanation
The pull request changes only ProjectDefaultsSettings.tsx and its focused browser test. The implementation and tests directly support issue #27997. No unrelated product behavior or files are changed.

Use the all-target availability guard in mixedModel.
resolvedDefaults compares only instanceId and model, so it can treat selections with different drivers as equal. The same selection can then remain editable while useScopedModelDisabledReason rejects it. That guard also detects disabled, unavailable, or missing model options.
Include the guard result for the representative selection. It skips targets whose providers have not loaded, so those targets are not treated as mismatches.

Cross-linking #28005, a parallel fix for #27997. The overlap is also noted on that PR.
The cases covered there include environment-specific model preferences, project-specific provider enablement, and hiding effort controls when the displayed model cannot be applied to every selected environment. Flagging these for consolidation into one fix.
Closing because main now resolves each environment’s automatic model using its own settings, shows “Automatic (mixed)” when the models differ, and hides the effort control. The merged fix and its tests cover the reported failure. #28005#27997
