fix(web): warn before updates interrupt running tool calls - #26424
Updating a remote desktop app restarts it and kills its running tasks and tool calls, but the per-server and Update all prompts didn't say so, and both went ahead if no confirmation dialog could be shown. Update everything only warned once that machine's threads had loaded, so it often showed no warning at all. Refs #25963
Change
The per-server, Update all, and Update everything prompts all say "Updates interrupt tasks and tool calls." whenever a desktop app will restart. Update everything no longer waits on loaded thread counts to decide, and the warning is part of the dialog's accessible description.
Per-server and Update all desktop updates now need an explicit Confirm. If no dialog can be shown, nothing updates.
Provider-only updates are unchanged and show no restart warning.
This doesn't fix the repeated relaunches also reported in the issue.
Verification
Captures from packaged Linux clients connected to a real macOS desktop host with a pending update, at b909d74, the head before the main merge. The prompt code hasn't changed since; main only added managed-policy eligibility checks around it.

Tests that fail on main and pass here:
ServerUpdateAction.browser.test.tsx: a desktop update, alone or in a batch, is not sent when no confirmation dialog can be shown.
SidebarUpdatePill.browser.test.tsx: Update everything shows the warning, visibly and in its accessible description, before any threads have loaded.
vp run check:changed passed at 0b7ab6d (Boat job 3z4hi3olpdifumid), and required CI passes at that head.
Earlier native recordings at b909d74 (before the main merge) also showed Cancel leaving a real running tool alive with no update request sent, and Confirm installing through the real Linux desktop updater: main / head Cancel runs, Update everything install, batch install. Maria's check repeated this with a real Codex shell.
Not shown: the prompts re-captured at the current head (a re-run on 2026-11-07 couldn't get an isolated desktop host up on corex or shiv), a successful macOS install and relaunch, the repeated relaunches from the issue, relay/T3 Connect connections, and an interrupted tool resuming.

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — Update dialogs now consistently warn that updates interrupt tasks and tool calls, including for assistive technology. Desktop updates also stop when confirmation is unavailable; update execution and permissions remain unchanged.

Walkthrough
Desktop update prompts now use an interruption warning and require confirmation to proceed. The batch-update dialog displays the warning for app updates when no disabled reason is present, and associates it with the accessible description.

Summary
Desktop update warnings and confirmation apps/web/src/components/ServerUpdateAction.tsx, apps/web/src/components/ServerUpdateAction.browser.test.tsx
Individual and bulk prompts use a shared interruption warning. Browser tests cover missing confirmation hosts, cancellation, and confirmation.
The dialog displays a fixed interruption warning for app updates when no disabled reason is present. The warning is linked to the accessible description and no longer depends on running-thread counts. Tests cover warning visibility, disabled reasons, and confirmation outcomes.
Desktop updates now warn about interruptions and require confirmation. The remaining non-desktop behavior predates this change, so no identified issue blocks merging this focused change.

…d a confirmation
Updating a desktop app from another client closed and relaunched it after a
dialog that never mentioned running tasks, and went ahead without asking when
no confirmation dialog was mounted. Both the per-server and the batch actions
now say running tasks and tool calls will be interrupted (and that thread
continuation cannot resume tool calls in progress), and only dispatch after
an explicit confirmation.

…ing work
The Update everything dialog only mentioned interrupted threads when the
client had loaded a running count for the restarting machines, so a remote
desktop with no loaded thread snapshot relaunched with no warning. It now says
running tasks and tool calls will be interrupted whenever any machine restarts,
and keeps the thread counts as extra detail. Provider-only updates stay quiet.

the verification rule is not met for the desktop update confirmation path. the description explicitly says connected native linux/macos warning and cancellation, preservation of in-flight tools, and affirmative dispatch at the current head are not shown. the historical web recordings use mocked update requests and cannot establish that a desktop update requires confirmation. attach a focused real-client check showing cancel prevents dispatch and affirmative confirmation reaches the intended update action, with current before/after captures and a short interaction recording, then request reconsideration. preserve the useful missing-warning report; provider-only updates need no unrelated restart proof.
verified as-is at b909d7447b3e931002f8ee99617184c4a7e17db8. no source changes or pushes.
reproduced on github/main (15fe28327278) in a separate worktree: per-server and batch desktop confirmations omit the tasks/tool-call warning; update everything has no interruption warning before remote threads load.
ran the exact pr head with vp i and a background dev server. used repo playwright with /usr/bin/google-chrome, paired to the official linux 0.1.5 appimage in isolated state. no mocked requests, fixtures, or demo data. created the project through the app, pointing at the real git checkout.
all three dialogs now say "Updates interrupt tasks and tool calls." update everything also includes it in the accessible description before remote threads load.
ran real codex gpt-6.1-sol turns through the client and desktop-hosted server. while a shell tool ran printf cancel-check-start; sleep 90; printf cancel-check-finished, cancelled update everything, update all, and per-server update. passive websocket capture saw zero update rpcs; the tool stayed running and completed with cancel-check-finished.
confirmed the per-server update: the client sent server.updateServerWithProgress and server.commitDesktopUpdate; the native updater downloaded 0.1.6 and relaunched. the same environment endpoint reported serverVersion: 0.1.6; the client reconnected with thread history intact. a real codex shell turn then returned post-update-provider-ok.
blacksmith ran the two changed browser test files: 21 tests passed. head ci: 32 successful, zero failing or pending.
an initial native startup blocked on this vm's new-keyring prompt. i stopped the task-owned app and restarted with --password-store=basic, then repeated the successful update without interacting with the keyring.
before/after dialog crops use the same real desktop host and update target. each pair is main, then pr.
cancellation recording removes the idle wait before the tool finishes.
github renders the screenshots but treats the external mp4 embeds as images. both uploaded clips were played and inspected in t3, including seeking; inline playback in the github comment is unavailable.
macos, windows, native ios/android, relay/tunnel connections, or a batch spanning multiple machines.
provider-only updates and a missing confirmation host have existing automated coverage, but were not reproduced through the real app here. this installation exposed no provider-only update; normal app navigation mounts the confirmation host.
resuming interrupted tools after an affirmed restart. the affirmative update ran after the cancellation turn finished; this verification makes no tool-resumption claim.
