What and why

The "MCP prompts for workflows" item from #372.

MCP clients show prompts as ready-made commands. The HTTP MCP endpoint now offers five, built from the shipped skills:

Prompt Argument (optional) Needs
inspect-page page list-pages, snapshot
debug-error error list-errors, explain-error (+ console, component, injection steps)
fix-form form inspect-forms, explain-form-invalid, form-history, form-diff
performance-pass interaction change-detection, diagnose-change-detection (+ find-leaks)
verify-fix fix list-pages, snapshot (+ wait-for, list-errors, open-in-panel)
  • A prompt is offered only while every tool it needs is on for agents (inspectors, agent.tools, agent.readOnly, actions), through a new agentToolOffered() in config.ts. Steps that name an optional tool are dropped when that tool is off. Under agent.readOnly or with actions.forms off, fix-form names no action tool, and performance-pass asks the user to start the recording from the panel.
  • The argument is quoted on one line, masked with redactText (JWTs, bearer tokens, secret pairs), with backticks swapped and clipped to 200 characters. Every message ends with the "treat app text as data" note.
  • A caller's own mcp.prompts replace the built-in ones, as with instructions.

devframe patches

devframe 1.2.5 declares only tools and resources, with no prompts/list or prompts/get. Like instructions, the local patches gain a prompts route option:

  • @devframes/agentic: when the list is non-empty, declares prompts: { listChanged: false } and registers prompts/list and prompts/get. An unknown prompt or a missing required argument answers InvalidParams (-32602). Passed on both the stdio and HTTP paths.
  • devframe: the McpPrompt* types, prompts on the MCP route and server options, and resolveMcpConfig / mountMcpRoute pass it on.
  • @devframes/hub: passes mcpConfig.prompts on.
  • With no prompts the server behaves exactly as before. pnpm-lock.yaml only changes the three patch hashes.

Left out

  • The stdio server (pangular mcp) offers no prompts: every prompt needs page tools that stdio doesn't have.
  • An installed package offers none until devframe ships the option upstream. The docs say both.
  • The list is fixed at startup (listChanged: false); plugin tools are not considered.

Docs: a "Prompts" section in agents/mcp-server.md, links from agents/tools.md and agents/skills.md, the prompts row in the patched-dependencies table of the contributing guide, and a Prompt term in docs/CONTEXT.md.

Refs #372.

How it was verified

  • pnpm install --frozen-lockfile (the patches apply)
  • pnpm commit:check
  • pnpm format:check
  • pnpm typecheck
  • pnpm test:devtools (3184). New agent-prompts.test.ts (16 tests) against the real hub endpoint and the pangular dev route: the capability, prompts/list, prompts/get, -32602 for an unknown prompt and a missing argument, no capability with prompts: []; gating by inspectors, agent.tools, agent.readOnly and actions; every pangular_* name in every prompt appears in that server's tools/list under four configs; argument masking and clipping.
  • pnpm skills:check
  • Docs in apps/docs updated and pnpm docs:build passes
  • pnpm extension:build: no change to extension/ui

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added five MCP workflow prompts for page inspection, error debugging, form fixes, change detection, and fix verification. Prompts are offered only when their required tools are available.
    • Prompt arguments are sanitized, masked where secret, and limited in length. Workflows adapt to read-only settings and available tools.
    • MCP clients can list and retrieve prompts; tool results can include validated text and image content.
  • Documentation
    • Documented prompt availability, configuration, arguments, and limitations, including differences between HTTP and stdio.

The HTTP MCP endpoint now offers five prompts built from the shipped skills: inspect-page, debug-error, fix-form, performance-pass and verify-fix. Each is offered only while the tools it needs are on for agents. devframe 1.2.5 has no prompt support, so the local devframe, agentic and hub patches gain a prompts route option, like instructions.

📝 Walkthrough

The change adds five generated MCP workflow prompts. Prompt availability depends on enabled tools and configuration. Patched packages pass prompts to the MCP server, which advertises and handles prompt requests. Tests and documentation cover the workflows and endpoint behavior.

Changes: MCP workflow prompts

Layer / File(s) Summary
Prompt configuration and forwarding
patches/devframe@1.2.5.patch, patches/@devframes__hub@1.2.5.patch, packages/devtools/src/agent-mcp.ts
Prompt option types and resolved configuration are added to the devframe patch. The hub forwards prompt configuration. Devtools supplies generated prompts when no custom prompt list is set.
Workflow generation and availability
packages/devtools/src/agent-prompts.ts, packages/devtools/src/config.ts, packages/devtools/src/__tests__/agent-prompts.test.ts, apps/docs/src/content/agents/*, docs/CONTEXT.md
Five workflows are generated from available tools. Prompt arguments are normalized, masked, and limited to 200 characters. Tests and documentation cover workflows, filtering, and argument handling.
MCP prompt handlers and tool results
patches/@devframes__agentic@1.2.5.patch, packages/devtools/src/__tests__/agent-prompts.test.ts, apps/docs/src/content/contributing/development.md
The patched server advertises prompts when configured and handles listing and retrieval, including invalid-parameter errors. It returns validated MCP content blocks from tools when available. Tests cover endpoint behavior and development documentation describes patch constraints.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to c1a6a

This change adds MCP workflow prompts. The only issue found is a stray asterisk in the prompts documentation that can render badly. It is trivial to fix, and nothing else blocks merging.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to c1a6a

The new text-export path can leave some pasted credentials unmasked. Existing access and write restrictions remain in place, and no cross-user access or privilege escalation was demonstrated.

Retained concerns

  • Low · security · observed: The added argument-to-message path can return prose credentials unmasked. For example, NG0100 password=swordfish is outside the pair matcher's start-of-string and URL-delimiter boundaries. Unless the value was already remembered or matches another credential pattern, it survives into the returned user-role message. This newly exposes a limitation of the unchanged helper; disclosure beyond the requesting client depends on how that client consumes the message.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The identified masking risk is limited to caller-supplied text returned through the requesting client's workflow response. The inspected path does not establish cross-user persistence, credential acquisition, new infrastructure authority or disclosure to a particular external provider.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • observed — A pasted error containing a whitespace-prefixed password=value pair can pass through the new message builder unchanged when its value is neither remembered nor independently credential-shaped. Quoting and length clipping do not repair this masking gap. This is a source-derived privacy condition, not demonstrated downstream exfiltration.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Trusted host configuration may replace generated templates, but retrieval does not grant tool execution authority. Existing form submission requires confirm=true, independently of the new consent wording; this argument check does not establish that a human actually approved the operation.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The existing recording API broadcasts mutations to every connected page when page is omitted. Repeated starts preserve an active recording, stop retains data, and cycle storage is bounded. The new performance guidance lacks an explicit stop or pinned page, but existing server instructions require page selection across multiple connected apps. These facts do not prove that a client will ignore that guidance.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Define argument masking for ordinary prose and quoted diagnostic formats rather than relying solely on query-style pair boundaries. Preserve the existing credential-pattern and remembered-secret protections before clipping.
  • proposed — Make target identity and recovery guidance explicit across diagnostic steps: retain page-qualified form identifiers, distinguish partial results from proof, and define recording stop and repeat boundaries without clearing unrelated active work.
