test(worker): exercise Temporal sandbox and gate history replay - #323
Closes#60. The default worker suite exercises Temporal signals, timers, retries and continue-as-new in the real workflow sandbox, and rejects changes that cannot replay the checked-in histories.
Change
Cover all eight production workflows in 31 time-skipping cases, including both supervisor branches, 50-item/250-poll continuations, running-child cancellation, real heartbeat timeout, failure compensation and memory-maintenance children. Mirror the existing continuation assertions with real workflow executions.
Replay nine synthetic histories against the current workflow bundle, including both current and pre-patch supervisor histories. An extra-timer variant must fail with DeterminismViolationError and identify its workflow/history.
Pin @temporalio/testing to 1.24.0 in the worker manifest and root lockfile. Use the exports already built by npm run check or the root public-test command; direct worker tests do not repeat those builds.
Refuse to overwrite recorded histories, with an early existence check and exclusive file creation. --output supports recording to a fresh directory while preserving earlier baselines.
Set the shared continuation fixture's required selectedToolIds field to null, preserving the schema's default for the previously omitted field.
Existing worker tests: 16.76 seconds. Complete npm test -w @space/worker: 265 tests passed in 104.99 seconds. Added time: 88.23 seconds, below three minutes.
Recorder: 31 sandbox cases passed and nine fresh histories written. Existing committed baselines remained byte-identical; attempts to overwrite both the committed baselines and the fresh recording were refused.
Positive and negative replay tests passed in the worker suite.
Local worker validation also passed all 265 tests with canonical macOS TMPDIR=/private/tmp; lint, hygiene and staged secret scanning passed. The full root Linux test suite remains pending upstream workflow approval.
Production workflow code and the nine committed history payloads are unchanged by the review fixes.
Added replay checks for existing workflow histories and detection of behavior changes that could affect replay.
Documentation
Added guidance for running workflow compatibility checks and recording history fixtures, including preserving older histories when making intentional workflow changes.
The worker package adds a Temporal time-skipping sandbox, workflow integration tests, synthetic history fixtures, a history-recording command, and replay tests that check recorded histories and detect workflow determinism drift.
Changes: Temporal workflow testing
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Sandbox harness and workflow bundles apps/worker/package.json, apps/worker/tests/support/*
The worker adds Temporal test dependencies and support for current, legacy, and drift workflow bundles. The sandbox starts workers, captures activity calls, provides workflow and history helpers, and handles cleanup.
The suite exercises workflow timers, signals, retries, continuations, child workflows, memory operations, and current and legacy supervisor behavior. The continuation fixture sets selectedToolIds to null.
History recording and replay apps/worker/package.json, apps/worker/scripts/record-workflow-histories.mjs, apps/worker/tests/workflow-replay.test.ts, apps/worker/tests/fixtures/workflow-histories/*
The recorder validates its output before copying histories to the destination. The fixtures document and record workflow histories, and replay tests check the required fixture set and a determinism failure in the drift bundle.
oll4com/spaceapp#325: Adds overlapping Temporal sandbox coverage, replay baselines, and history recording.
Merge Risk: Low · previous review 45b0a
Adding a documented compatibility fixture can fail the worker replay test unless maintainers also update the replay inventory.

Explanation
The changes remain within issue #60. The package pin, recorder guard, workflow sandbox helpers, synthetic histories, replay tests, fixture adjustment, and documentation support the requested testing and replay gate. The reviewed summary states that production workflow code is unchanged. No unrelated production logic or activity implementation change is shown.

Explanation
Issue #60 supplies coding requirements. The PR adds @temporalio/testing 1.24.0, real time-skipping tests for the eight workflows, synthetic history recording, legacy supervisor coverage, replay tests, and a DeterminismViolationError drift test. The fixture README documents guarded re-recording. The PR reports that the Ubuntu runtime budget and Linux full-suite result remain unverified, so the requirement for less than three added minutes on ubuntu-latest cannot be established.
Resolution
Evidence needed: the GitHub Actions Linux result must confirm the worker tests add less than three minutes and that the required worker test suite passes on ubuntu-latest.

Removed the three unrelated validation-fixture changes and documented the sandbox/replay helpers in 843f69c. The root package-lock.json pins @temporalio/testing to 1.24.0; all nine history JSON files are committed, including both current and legacy supervisor histories. Positive and negative replay tests pass after this update.
The Ubuntu runtime measurement and Linux suite still need GitHub Actions. Could a maintainer approve the CI, Security, Container matrix and Platform matrix workflows for this fork PR?
Thanks, this is a careful submission. It runs the production workflow source on a time-skipping server for all eight workflows and covers every listed scenario, including stop and interrupt, the 50-item and 250-poll continuations on both supervisor branches, a real heartbeat timeout, and the continuation regression assertions. The nine compact histories are synthetic, the replay test names the workflow and the file, and the drift bundle fails with DeterminismViolationError.
The pretest hook rebuilds seven packages on every npm test -w @space/worker. That repeats builds that npm run check and npm run test:public already run, and it counts against the three-minute budget. Please drop the hook or skip it when the builds are current, and give the added time on Linux, which the PR notes is not measured yet. temporal:record-histories copies over the existing baselines, while the README asks contributors to keep the histories of earlier branches. Please make the recorder refuse to overwrite an existing file, so a re-record cannot replace a baseline without anyone noticing.
Please also explain why room-continuation-fixture.ts needs selectedToolIds: [], since that file sits outside the new tests.
The Actions runs wait for maintainer approval after code review; that is not a failure.

Pushed 45b0af0 addressing the build hook and recorder requests.
Removed pretest and the preparation helper. The documented npm run check and existing root public-test command build the exports once; worker tests no longer rebuild them.
The recorder now refuses an existing destination before starting the server and uses exclusive file creation when publishing. --output writes reviewed new recordings to a separate directory. All nine committed baselines remain unchanged; both the existing-file refusal and a fresh nine-history recording pass.
selectedToolIds is required in the inferred CreateSpaceAgentSessionInput type; omitting it produces TS2345 when checking the shared fixture. I changed [] to null, matching the schema's previous default for an omitted field. Both the existing continuation tests and the real sandbox reuse this fixture; production behavior is unchanged.
Ubuntu validation against 45b0af0 passed: timing and recorder run. The existing worker tests took 16.76 seconds; the complete npm test -w @space/worker took 104.99 seconds, an added 88.23 seconds. All 265 tests passed. npm run check, a fresh nine-history recording, and refusal of a second recording into that directory also passed. The validation branch explicitly checks out the PR commit; its workflow is outside this PR.
