Mocked Temporal tests do not exercise the real workflow sandbox or detect replay incompatibility. This adds real time-skipping workflow coverage and a default-suite replay gate without changing production workflow behavior.

This resubmits the unchanged implementation from #279, at acb0d4730f9602f68f45f2b8c4d64849e28b8711. That PR was closed when the maintainers ended the bounty programme. The programme's closure is acknowledged; this submission makes no bounty or payment claim.

Changes

  • Cover all eight production workflows with 44 real time-skipping sandbox cases and stub activities, including both supervisor branches, signals, timers, retries, continuation boundaries, and carried state.
  • Replay nine synthetic histories, including the legacy supervisor branch, against production workflows. A test-only extra timer proves replay rejects nondeterminism.
  • Pin direct worker devDependencies @temporalio/testing, @temporalio/common, and @temporalio/proto to 1.24.0, with the lockfile updated.
  • Preserve older fixture generations within replay discovery during intentional patched changes. Exclusive archive creation protects existing files; failed publication removes only this invocation's archive and preserves the original error.
  • Add ten recorder regression cases and fixture maintenance documentation. Production workflows and committed history payloads remain unchanged.

Recorded verification

These are assistant-executed October 23, 2026 results, not fresh executions on this resubmission date. Environment: Ubuntu under WSL, Node 22.22.2, npm 10.9.7, Temporal SDK 1.24.0.

Revision Verification
Current head acb0d473 12 focused tests passed: ten recorder regressions and two real replay tests, including all committed histories and the nondeterminism negative control. Strict test types, changed-file lint, worker check/build, fixture integrity, whitespace, and hygiene passed. Tested and committed Git trees matched exactly.
Parent 1ad241b8 280 worker tests passed. Root check/build passed. Complete suite: 10,112 passed, 3 failed, 20 skipped.

The three full-suite failures were API browser control lease (BROWSER_CHROME_UNAVAILABLE), ClipboardDock completion count, and terminal upload's resize assertion. The exact web cases were compared with untouched 953adbf: ClipboardDock passed isolated on both; terminal upload failed identically on both. No unrelated API/UI code was changed.

The full worker and repository-wide suites were not rerun after the final archive cleanup correction. At submission, this branch is 38 commits behind upstream main (d9059c14); compatibility with that current base has not been freshly validated. The added runtime on GitHub ubuntu-latest remains unmeasured. Prior PR Actions ended with zero jobs; their failed run conclusions do not represent executed test results. No workflow approval or security control was bypassed.

The two original CodeRabbit findings were resolved in the prior PR. The final archive cleanup correction has focused regression coverage; no fresh completed CodeRabbit review of that final head is claimed.

This is AI-assisted work. The three commits retain Bradley Grubbs's Signed-off-by trailers.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Tests
    • Expanded checks for turn processing, room-agent supervision, and memory maintenance workflows, including retries, failures, interruptions, and follow-up handling.
    • Added replay checks for recorded workflow histories to verify compatibility with current workflows and detect unexpected behavior changes.
    • Added safeguards to verify that history recordings are complete and existing recordings are preserved when new recordings fail.

Declare direct @temporalio/common and @temporalio/proto development
dependencies at 1.24.0 and update the workspace lockfile consistently.
Archive replaced histories byte-for-byte under unique top-level JSON names,
retaining replay discovery and duplicate workflow-ID validation.

Add recorder regressions for initial publication, ordinary overwrite refusal,
repeated archival, and failed or incomplete recording. Existing fixture JSON
files and production workflows remain unchanged.

Validation on Node 22.22.2/npm 10.9.7 under Ubuntu WSL:
- Recorder regressions: 5 passed; archival control fails on the old recorder.
- Worker suite: 280 passed in 35 files, including replay and negative control.
- Check, build, hygiene, strict Temporal test types and changed-file lint pass.
- All nine committed history hashes remain unchanged; duplicate archive IDs
are rejected by the existing replay validation.
- Full npm test: 10,112 passed, 3 failed, 20 skipped. Chrome is unavailable;
  terminal upload's resize-message assertion also fails on untouched 953adbf;
ClipboardDock's full-run failure passes isolated checks on both heads.

GitHub ubuntu-latest runtime is not measured by these local results.

Signed-off-by: Bradley Grubbs <103287760+bgrubbs1@users.noreply.github.com>
Create archives with an exclusive file handle so failed writes or publication
remove only the archive created by this recorder invocation. Preserve existing
archives on collisions and retain the original error if cleanup also fails.

Add regression coverage for publication failure, archive collisions, partial
writes, and secondary archive/staging cleanup failures.

Validation: 12 recorder/replay tests passed, including real committed-history
replay and the nondeterminism negative control. Changed-file types/lint,
worker check/build, fixture integrity, whitespace, and hygiene checks passed.

Merge Risk: Low · up to acb0d

This adds test coverage and recording tooling without touching production code. Two minor tooling edge cases remain: a failed scenario can still be recorded as a fixture, and a mid-run publication failure can leave mixed fixture generations. Both are recoverable and only affect maintainers re-recording histories, so the merge risk is low.

Nitpick Replace randomUUID() with fixed constants in consolidationRun().

27-28: 📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🔵 Trivial | 💤 Low value

Replace randomUUID() with fixed constants in consolidationRun().

consolidationRun() builds run.id and run.workflowId from randomUUID(). The startMaintenance and startMutation helpers also use randomUUID() for workflow IDs. These values are written into the recorded fixtures: the child workflow ID, the activity payloads, and the top-level workflowId. Each re-record with SPACE_REPLACE_PATCHED_HISTORIES=1 therefore produces new IDs and a noisy fixture diff. Random inputs also make failures harder to reproduce.

Use fixed IDs instead. The workflows are closed when each test ends, so Temporal's default workflow ID reuse policy allows the same ID again. The replay test's duplicate-ID check only compares top-level fixture IDs. The maintenance: and mutation: prefixes keep those distinct.

♻️ Proposed change
- id: `audit:${randomUUID()}`, mode: "REPAIR", triggerKind: "SCHEDULED", status: "SUCCEEDED",
-    workflowId: `consolidation:${randomUUID()}`, dedupeKey: "memory:test:scheduled", sourceHash,
+ id: "audit:memory-test", mode: "REPAIR", triggerKind: "SCHEDULED", status: "SUCCEEDED",
+ workflowId: "consolidation:memory-test", dedupeKey: "memory:test:scheduled", sourceHash,

Apply the same change to maintenance:${randomUUID()} on Line 108 and mutation:${randomUUID()} on Line 121. Then remove the randomUUID import.

Based on learnings: "In test code, avoid using current system time (e.g., now()) or randomly generated IDs/UUIDs as inputs. Use fixed, hardcoded constants instead."

Nitpick Publication is not atomic across the nine fixtures. Roll back already-published files on failure.

35-55: 🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Publication is not atomic across the nine fixtures. Roll back already-published files on failure.

The loop archives and renames one fixture at a time. The catch block removes only the archive of the current file. If rename fails on the second or a later fixture, earlier fixtures stay replaced and their -pre- archives stay in place. The command then exits non-zero and leaves the live set as a mix of old and new generations.

No history is lost, because the archives keep the old bytes. However, the README says a failed run leaves existing fixtures alone. The tests only inject the failure on dotGoalWorkflow.json, the first file in expected, so they do not cover this case.

Track each published file and restore it in the catch block. For example, rename the archive back over the live file, or remove the live file if no archive exists. Then add a test that fails publication on a later fixture.

♻️ Sketch of the rollback

Update the publication loop over expected fixtures to track successfully renamed
files and their prior state. If a later publication fails, roll back earlier
files in reverse order by restoring their archives or removing live files that
had no prior version, while preserving the original error and existing cleanup
behavior. Add a test that injects failure on a later fixture and verifies the
live set remains unchanged.

Minor · Data Integrity & Integration · Quick win

Record the history only after the scenario body succeeds.

recordWorkflowHistory runs in finally. When body(handle) fails an assertion or reaches the wall-time deadline, the history of that failed run is still written as a fixture. When SPACE_REPLACE_PATCHED_HISTORIES=1, that write uses flag "w" and replaces the committed fixture. When the flag is "wx" and the file exists, recordWorkflowHistory throws EEXIST. That error replaces the original assertion error, so the test output shows a write error and not the real failure.

The roomAgentActionWorkflow test at Line 407 records only after all assertions pass. Apply the same rule here. Keep terminate in finally, and move the recording to the success path.

Thanks for the careful work here, and for being clear that this makes no bounty or payment claim.

We're not able to take this PR. Since the bounty programme ended (when #279 was closed), our policy is that code from bounty submissions isn't merged into SpaceApp, including resubmissions; where an issue still needs fixing we write the change ourselves.

Temporal sandbox and replay coverage is on our own list, and we'll build it on top of the existing apps/worker/tests/fixtures/workflow-replay/ harness and the @temporalio/* 1.25 versions the repo now uses.

Closing this one. Thanks again for the thorough write-up.
