test(audio-quality): measure the browser budgets on the nightly runner - #5442
Conversation
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The nightly Audio quality job has failed every night since it landed: its browser ceilings were recorded on a workstation. Re-derive them from the seven scheduled nightly runs of 2026-10-07..13: the worst night times 1.25 plus one runner hiccup, rounded up to two significant figures. Every one of those runs passes under --enforce. Nightly now keeps passing runs too, so the next re-measurement has data. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

| "note": "Measured 2026-09-28 on a shared Linux workstation: two full 60 s runs and one 20 s run, seed 7. Each ceiling is twice the worse run, rounded up to two significant figures, with a floor (5 underruns/min, 20 gap ms/min, 1 skip/min, 100 discarded ms/min, 1% stalled, 1% silence) so one runner hiccup does not fail a clean row; target_ms_p95 is the worst measured plus one 20 ms bucket. The fixed-250 control measured zero on every counter. Every auto row records today's shallow target (#3477: 43 ms for Opus, underrunning thousands of quanta a minute), so its ceilings catch a regression past that floor and nothing better; the jitter target work is expected to tighten them. Not yet measured on the nightly runner, which has no audio device; re-record from its first runs. Updated 2026-09-29: mild and wide now use shared order-preserving Gaussian jitter; bursty and step are new. Those 16 rows were re-recorded for 60 s each, seed 7, on the same shared Linux workstation with concurrent bounded builds. Their ceilings use twice the measurement rounded upward to two significant figures and the same floors above; target_ms_p95 adds one 20 ms bucket. Other rows retain their previous measurements. These remain current-player regression ceilings, not target audio quality; re-record on the nightly runner before tightening them. The replay rows are deterministic, so their ceilings are exactly what they measured on 2026-10-01, through the end of each recording, with no headroom: any regression fails them, and an improvement should be tightened in. Updated 2026-10-04: the replay rows now resolve \"auto\" from the measured arrival estimator instead of the round trip, and were re-measured exactly on the audio-jitter-target line; underruns fell to at most 2 a minute, while a run dry now re-stalls and refills to the target, which shows up as stalled and silent share.", | |||
| "note": "The browser rows are measured on the nightly runner (ubuntu-24.04-arm, headless Chromium, seed 7, 60 s a row): the audio-quality-run artifacts of the seven scheduled Nightly runs on main from 2026-10-07 to 2026-10-13 (37633358782, 37790146216, 37940662573, 38054566400, 38143901976, 38276133321, 38415278161). Each ceiling is the worst of the seven nights times 1.25, plus one runner hiccup, rounded up to two significant figures. The hiccup is sized from the single gaps the 2026-10-08 night put on otherwise clean rows, the fixed-250 control among them: 250 underruns/min, 700 gap ms/min, 3.3 skips/min, 280 discarded ms/min, 0.01 stalled, 0.015 silence, and one 20 ms bucket of target. Budgeted this way, every one of the seven nights passes when it is held out of the measurement except 2026-10-08, whose two-second stall on the Opus mild isolated row is beyond one hiccup; that row's own ceilings include it. These ceilings record today's player as the runner hears it, not target audio quality: the AAC bursty rows stall for about a third of the window and the Opus near-zero isolated row drops up to a second at a time, and both are budgeted as measured. To re-measure, download the same artifact from the latest scheduled nightlies (`gh run download <id> -n audio-quality-run`), which keep every run, and apply the same rule. The replay rows are deterministic, so their ceilings are exactly what they measured, through the end of each recording, with no headroom: any regression fails them, and an improvement should be tightened in. They were last re-measured on 2026-10-04, when they began resolving \"auto\" from the measured arrival estimator instead of the round trip.", | |||

Re-measure against the player revision under test
These ceilings were derived from runs ending at b581c27, but this commit is based on 76d739d; between those revisions, 3dbda44 (#5288) rewrote Container.Consumer delivery and the js/watch audio decoder's reset handling, which are exactly the paths producing the graded underrun, stall, and skip metrics. Consequently, the seven historical runs do not establish that these budgets pass the player this nightly will actually build, or that they represent its current baseline; as the PR body acknowledges, the next nightly may immediately break. Run a branch dispatch at the current revision and derive or at least validate the ceilings against that artifact before marking the budget work complete.

Not fixing in this PR. Nightly is never dispatched from a branch in this repo, so the scheduled runs on main are the only runner measurements available, and the PR body already calls out that #5288 and #5367 are unmeasured.
Merging can't make the nightly worse: with the old workstation ceilings, the Audio quality job fails every night regardless of #5288. The first scheduled nightly after merge grades the post-#5288 player against these ceilings. If it breaches, the fix is to re-measure the moved rows from that run's audio-quality-run artifact, which this PR now uploads on every run.

WalkthroughThe nightly audio-quality workflow now retains run data and uploads the artifact for non-cancelled runs. The browser budget note and Chromium AAC and Opus limits now reflect seven nightly measurements. Related documentation points to the budget note, and the audio-quality budget-planning quest was removed. Priority: ➖ Normal Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to

Qualify the retention claim for cancelled runs.
The workflow skips the upload step when a run is cancelled. Change “every run directory” to “every non-cancelled run directory” so the README matches the workflow.

Problem
The nightly
Audio qualityjob has failed every night since #4395 added it. Its browser ceilings were recorded on a workstation (#4426), but the job runs onubuntu-24.04-arm, so a red job says nothing about regressions.Approach
Measured from the
audio-quality-runartifacts of the seven scheduled Nightly runs onmain, 2026-10-07 to 2026-10-13 (37633358782, 37790146216, 37940662573, 38054566400, 38143901976, 38276133321, 38415278161). No nightly was dispatched from a branch.Rule, per browser row and key: worst of the seven nights x 1.25, plus one runner hiccup, rounded up to two significant figures. The hiccup allowance comes from the single gaps the 2026-10-08 night put on otherwise clean rows, the fixed-250 control among them: 250 underruns/min, 700 gap ms/min, 3.3 skips/min, 280 discarded ms/min, 0.01 stalled, 0.015 silence, and one 20 ms target bucket.
budgets.json'snoterecords this method.grade.ts --enforceagainst the new file.opus mild isolated(PROBE RTT spiked to 227 ms on loopback) is bigger than one hiccup. That row's own ceilings include it, so a repeat on that row passes, but the same stall on another row would fail a night.MOQ_TEST_KEEP=1,if: !cancelled()), not just on failure. Once the job is green, a failure-only upload would leave nothing to re-measure from. About 1.3 MB a night, kept 7 days.quest/m0/audio-quality-budgets.mdand its references.Loosened ceilings (106 loosened, 55 tightened)
Each loosened ceiling is what the runner measures today:
stalled/silence0.01 to about 0.5, skips around 30/min, discarded about 4 s/min. The player re-stalls for 19 to 43% of the window every night (suspected defect, below).stalled0.12 to 0.17. On the runner it stalls 6 to 12% of the window.target_ms_p9563 to 1100. On the runner it ranges 100 to 800 ms with ~1 s gaps, while the plain ring on the same profile holds at 60 ms (suspected defect).target_ms_p95elsewhere: AAC rows sit at exactly 209.2 ms every night, so their ceilings are now 290. Opus rows run 60 to 240 ms, against 63 to 154 before.opus fixed-250 plainsaw one 418 ms gap on 2026-10-08 with no network signal.Underrun ceilings mostly tightened: the current player underruns far less than the workstation-era one.
Not measured: player commits after the 2026-10-13 nightly's head (b581c27), e.g. #5288 and #5367. The next nightly confirms or breaks this.
