quest(m1): plan #4349 follow-ups after the reporter's re-run - #5325
Conversation
The re-run against cdn.moq.pro clears the cross-relay-bursts condition: no loss and no failed FETCH. What remains is cross-node announce flapping after a clean close, and `internal error` replies from fronts that end on Error::Dropped. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

WalkthroughThe M1 quest list and cluster-routing reference now point to a new quest about reproducing cross-node announce flapping. The previous cross-relay-bursts quest is removed. The dropped-sources plan adds a decision to trace in-flight subscription endings to the source error and records proposed error-conversion handling and regression-test expectations. Priority: ⬇️ Low Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to This PR changes quest plans, not relay behavior, but the current wording could close the CDN issue before release verification and leave the planned regression unable to detect an error-propagation failure. Correct these bounded plan gaps before relying on them. Pre-merge checks |

[P2] Preserve draining subscriptions in the abort quest — front-abort-codes.md:19–38 incorrectly says Action::End passes its error to every unfinished track and requires an active subscription to return Unroutable when its broadcast closes. Action::End deliberately preserves active source copies. The existing regression closes the source before its final group arrives, then requires that group and normal completion. Aborting that case would lose valid trailing data and violate ANNOUNCE_END semantics. Scope Unroutable/Cancel to requests and tracks the front actually aborts, retain draining copies, and split the proposed relay test accordingly. Changing front Dropped values alone cannot guarantee the stated active-subscription outcome.
Direction: the reporter's rerun supports retiring the condition quest, and reproduction before another routing fix is sensible. Reuse or extend mesh_withdraw.rs, which already checks one retraction on a time-mocked 34-node partial mesh. Keep the proposed release-tree positive control before treating a passing main drill as evidence this scenario is fixed.
Verification: all five changed files, #4349's rerun, relevant front/origin/error code, protocol text, withdrawal tests, and #4642/#4741/#4914 inspected through GitHub. No tests or production reproduction run.

Trace active subscriptions instead of remapping front ends
For the reported clean-close case with an active subscription, origin::run_front does not pass the Action::End error to every unfinished track: when a used track has a source copy, the arm calls io.routes.conclude() and returns it in in_flight, so its eventual error comes from that copy. Replacing the front's Dropped values with Unroutable therefore will not fix this scenario, and the proposed relay assertion would encode the wrong layer's behavior. Trace the source-copy termination and consolidate this with quest/m1/dropped-sources.md, which already requires preserving the source's real error rather than remapping Dropped.

Useful? React with 👍 / 👎.
In-flight subscriptions end with their source copy's error, not the front's, so remapping front ends alone cannot fix #4349's case; the existing dropped-sources quest already owns preserving the real error. The flapping drill extends mesh_withdraw and needs the release tree as a positive control. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Keep #4349 open until the release is verified.
If the drill passes on main, this plan closes #4349 before the reporter verifies a release on cdn.moq.pro. Keep the issue open until that rerun confirms the reported behavior is resolved.

Specify and assert the source-copy error in the regression.
The plan states that in-flight tracks end with the source's error, but the regression step does not specify how the source copy returns a non-clean result or which error the test must assert. Do not use the existing clean track-ending sequence as the regression.

The #4349 reporter re-ran their A/B/C/D comparison against current cdn.moq.pro (comment). This clears the condition on
quest/m1/cross-relay-bursts.md: 0 lost messages and 0 failed FETCH across about 31k per-request records, and no path still announced at the end of any run. This PR deletes that quest and plans what remains.quest/m1/cross-node-flapping.md, takesCloses #4349). When the publisher and subscriber are on different nodes, a clean close toggles Announced/Retracted about 1140 times over about 2 s. The report ran against the release. The quest builds a time-mocked drill with 3 or more relays and runs it onmain, then either lands it as a regression test or fixes the cause at the source.quest/m1/dropped-sources.md, existing quest, Plan extended). Fronts currently end onError::Dropped, which falls through the_ => Internalcatch-all and reaches subscribers asinternal error. Under the extended plan, front-aborted requests and tracks end withUnroutable, orCancelon a local shutdown. In-flight copies drain and end with the source's own error, and the conversions match every error variant explicitly. No wire change. Not planned: the self-hosted two-relay rejoin stall on 0.17.2. It is probably changed on
mainby #4741 and #4914, and the flapping quest's Plan records it.Decisions

Reviews found that a separate abort quest overlaps dropped-sources and would remap the wrong layer for in-flight subscriptions. How should that be resolved?
