Summary

aggregate::Merged kept every sticky traffic node forever, so a long-lived aggregator grew with every distinct node path ever announced. Now:

  • An unannounced node records when it departed. A reannounce within aggregate::Config::grace (default 10 minutes) clears it and resumes the node's own counters, so a reconnect with intact counters is not new traffic.
  • Once the grace elapses, the node's last counters fold into one retired total per key and the entry is dropped. Merged = retired + live nodes, so totals stay exact and monotonic.
  • A still-announced node whose reader failed never folds.
  • Folding happens on poll. No timer is needed: only an announce adds a node, and an announce triggers a poll.
  • The node map shrinks after a churn peak, so walking it each frame costs the live set, not the peak.

Tests

  • return_within_grace_resumes_counters: exact 160 (100 + 20 + 40), nothing folded
  • return_after_grace_counts_twice: exact 260 (retired 100 + returned 120 + 40), which pins down the decision below
  • restart_after_grace_adds_to_the_total: exact 170, no regression
  • failed_reader_does_not_fold_while_announced
  • churn_keeps_nodes_bounded: 64 distinct nodes churn, nodes stays within the grace bound, the total stays exact, and everything folds at the end

All time is mocked (start_paused). just check passes.

Benchmark

The new cargo bench -p moq-stats --bench aggregate measures us per merged frame over live x departed nodes. never disables the fold, which matches the old behavior.

live departed grace us/frame
   1 0 1s 38.7
   1 256 1s 39.2
   1 256 never 115.7
   1 4096 1s 32.9
   1 4096 never 3449.9
  16 4096 1s 40.6
  16 4096 never 7120.6
 128 0 1s 118.7
 128 4096 1s 115.1
 128 4096 never 2278.0

With the fold, cost tracks live nodes and stays flat as departed nodes increase.

Public API / wire

  • New aggregate::Config::grace: Duration field and Config::with_grace. Config is #[non_exhaustive], so this is additive.
  • Wire: none.

Decision

A path that returns after the grace with its counters intact double-counts its pre-departure traffic. The test asserts the exact 260. Accepted (maintainer, 2026-10-05): an acceptable bounded error; no per-path baseline. The error is bounded (once per such return) and rare when the grace exceeds reconnect times. After stats epochs it also requires a same-epoch return after a 10+ minute outage. The alternative is a per-path baseline kept after the fold. Bounding that baseline brings back the memory problem this PR removes.

Within the grace, a node that returns with lower counters (a restart under the same path) still regresses the merged total. That is the existing reset contract, and stats epochs remove it by giving every restart a new path.

The repo's "max(wall, pts)" rule doesn't apply here because the fold has no media timestamp, so it uses a mockable monotonic Instant.

Follow-ups

  • Stats epochs (/quest/m0/broadcast-epoch/stats-epoch.md) now builds on the retired total. Its plan is updated to match.

The aggregator kept every sticky node it had ever seen, so a long-lived
aggregator grew with every distinct node path (scale-outs, renames, and
soon every epoch). An unannounced node now waits `aggregate::Config::grace`
(default 10 minutes) for its path to return, then its last counters fold
into one retired total per key and the entry is dropped. Merged totals
stay exact and monotonic.

Adds an aggregate benchmark swept over live and departed node counts.

Walkthrough

The stats aggregate adds a configurable grace period for departed nodes. It retains their last traffic frame during that period, then folds expired contributions into retired per-key totals and removes the node entries. Reannounces within grace resume the retained contribution; returns after grace add counters alongside retired totals. Tests cover return and restart behavior, reader failures, and churn. A benchmark measures merged-frame processing across live and departed node counts and grace settings. Related quest documents were updated or removed.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 4f8b9

Departed stats nodes are supposed to be folded and freed after the grace period. However, cleanup runs only when new activity polls the aggregate, so an idle aggregate can keep departed entries in memory indefinitely. The memory documentation also overstates the bound, and one benchmark case measures a slightly different setup than intended. Fix the cleanup wake-up before merging.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 4f8b9

The change reduces retention under node churn, but historical traffic keys remain indefinitely. Repeated departures can therefore accumulate state even when node identities stay bounded. Post-grace returns also intentionally duplicate earlier counters. Production input limits and downstream accounting uses are not established.

Retained concerns

  • Low · security · inferred: Retired state is not bounded by the live or grace-retained node set. An accepted stats source can reuse one node path after successive grace expiries with disjoint traffic keys; each previous key remains in retired totals and is cloned into subsequent merged frames. The base replaced that same node's last snapshot instead. This introduces lifetime key accumulation under bounded node identity, with potential memory and per-frame work growth. Existing distinct-node retention was already unbounded, and ordinary fixed-key churn improves; attacker authority and upstream cardinality controls are not established.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated resource exposure is one aggregate instance and the memory and processing capacity of its hosting process. Broader tenant or service exposure depends on caller-selected origin scope and deployment sharing, which are not established here.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A source able to publish accepted node snapshots and repeatedly depart beyond grace could accumulate disjoint traffic keys in retired state while reusing one node identity. Subsequent outputs clone that history. This is a conditional availability path; unauthorized publication, production reachability, and privileged downstream outcomes have not been verified.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The PR preserves caller-provided origin authority, node-path recognition, and the existing request and subscription mechanisms. It does not add a new authorization bypass in those inspected flows. Publisher trust and external consumer policies remain outside the demonstrated coverage.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — A reader error is isolated to its node rather than terminating the entire merged view. An announced failed reader remains retained without folding, preserving its contribution. This containment behavior predates the PR and is explicitly exercised by the new grace test.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Define the supported lifetime traffic-key budget and enforce it at a trusted boundary, with explicit accounting behavior when exceeded. Validate same-node, distinct-key churn across grace expiry. Before using merged totals for billing, quotas, or other authoritative decisions, establish whether consumers reconcile the documented post-grace duplication.

[P2] Honor expiry before rearming a returning path — rs/moq-stats/src/aggregate.rs:397–402.
The announce loop runs before the expiration sweep, and the occupied-entry branch clears departed unconditionally. After observing a departure, an otherwise idle aggregator can wait beyond grace and next wake on that same path's return. The expired entry then escapes folding. With A=100 and B=40, a restarted A=30 yields 70 instead of the intended 170; intact A=120 yields 160 instead of the documented 260. Both after-grace tests explicitly call settle between advancing time and reannouncement, hiding this ordering. Check expiry before clearing the timestamp and cover reannouncement as the first wake after grace.

Direction: the bounded retired total and documented post-fold double-counting tradeoff fit the goal. The new grace configuration is additive; no wire change. The main-branch merge leaves the aggregate implementation unchanged and does not fix the finding.

Verification limits: static review of all eight PR file diffs, aggregate lifecycle/tests, and relevant repository guidance; no tests or benchmarks executed.

Automated review: moq#4874 at b9eb3ae359e53e35de487f85e000682dc968fda3

The fold looks correct. It runs after the announce drain in the same poll, so a return that arrives together with its grace expiry clears departed first and wins. The values it folds have already been retired by depart(), so folding doesn't change the merged view. Failed-but-announced nodes never fold. The tests pin exact totals for all three return cases. I found no blocking issues. CI is still queued on this head.

Non-blocking

  1. The double count is a whole relay's lifetime, and until stats epochs land it's not limited to same-epoch returns (aggregate.rs Config::default, grace: 600s). Node paths are stable names on main today. So any relay whose stats announce drops for more than 10 minutes without a restart (a partition, a cluster or origin link outage) comes back as a Vacant entry, and retired plus its intact counters adds its entire boot-lifetime traffic twice. Main never double counts in that case, so this is a behavior change for billing-style consumers such as the moq.pro aggregator, even though the API change is additive. A departed node only costs its last frame, so a much longer default (an hour or more) is cheap at the churn your benchmark shows. Also consider a tracing::debug!/info! on each fold with the path, so a later double count can be traced.
  2. retired bounds nodes, not keys. Every broadcast path ever reported stays in retired forever and is cloned into every merged frame (merged() starts from self.retired.clone()). That's no worse than main, where the sticky entries held the same keys, and stats-split retires the per-path maps anyway. But the new Consumer doc ("memory follows live nodes, not every node ever seen") reads as a full bound. A clause like "per-key entries still accumulate until stats-split" would keep it accurate. The benchmark reuses the same 16 keys on every node, so it doesn't measure key growth either.
  3. A repeated End for an already-departed path restarts its grace. The unannounce branch sets node.departed = Some(Instant::now()) unconditionally. If the announce stream can emit a second End for the same path (for example after an Update on an Ended node whose re-resolve failed), the fold is pushed back. Using node.departed.get_or_insert_with(Instant::now) keeps the first departure time.
  4. Cross-PR: docs(quest): stats per-broadcast tracks become on-demand prefix tracks #4870 edits quest/m0/broadcast-epoch/README.md one line below the line deleted here, and it still shows the stats-aggregate-bound.md line as context. Whichever PR merges second may need a trivial rebase. The other inbound links (stats-epoch.md, stats-split.md, stats-linger.md) are all removed here, and I found no remaining references in the repo.

Verdict: MERGE once CI is green.

…weep

A reannounce cleared the departure stamp before the poll's sweep, so a
path returning as the first wake after the grace escaped the fold: a
restarted node regressed the merged total.

Addressed the P2 from the automated review in 4f8b939: a reannounce now folds an expired entry (shared Node::fold_expired) before clearing departed, so a return that is the first poll after the grace starts over. restart_after_grace_adds_to_the_total no longer polls between the grace and the return; it failed with a regression (170 -> 70) before the fix.

Automated follow-up review: moq#4874 at 4f8b93970b84fbe0cbcb4723b04d8397b2ad7314

This is a re-review after one push, 4f8b9397 ("fold an expired node when its path returns before a sweep"), on top of the last reviewed head b9eb3ae3.

The fix is correct, and it fixes something my last review got wrong. That review said a return arriving together with its grace expiry "clears departed first and wins". That was exactly the bug. If the grace had already elapsed but no poll had swept yet, the reannounce cleared departed and kept the stale last frame. A restarted node's fresh, lower counters then replaced it, and the merged total went backwards.

The push moves the fold into Node::fold_expired and calls it from the Entry::Occupied reannounce branch (aggregate.rs ~L408) before clearing departed. The fold moves last into retired, so the merged view doesn't change, and the entry correctly stays in the map as a live node. Both paths use web_async::time::Instant, so the paused-clock tests apply to them. The restart_after_grace_adds_to_the_total test no longer settles after advancing the clock, so the return itself has to do the fold. read_monotonic_until(.., 140, ..) would have caught the old 100-to-30 regression. I found no blocking issues. CI is still queued on this head.

Non-blocking

  1. Still open from the last review: a repeated End restarts the grace (aggregate.rs ~L431, node.departed = Some(Instant::now())). This now matters a little more, because a pushed-back departed also delays the new reannounce-time fold. node.departed.get_or_insert_with(Instant::now) keeps the first departure time.
  2. Still open: the 600s default grace makes a long partition double count a relay's whole lifetime. The new code path counts twice in the same way (an intact-counter return after the grace now folds on reannounce as well as on sweep). The trade-off is the same as before, and a longer default or a log line on each fold would still help.
  3. Still open: the retired key growth doc caveat, unchanged by this push.
  4. Small test gap. The intact-counter, no-sweep-in-between case (the twin of the new restart test) isn't covered. return_after_grace_counts_twice still settles before the return, so it only exercises the sweep path. Dropping its settle into a copy of the test would pin the reannounce fold for both counter shapes.

Verdict: MERGE once CI is green.

No new actionable findings in the delta from b9eb3ae. The prior P2 is addressed: aggregate.rs:403–412 folds an expired contribution before clearing its departure timestamp, preserving the retired total when reannouncement is the first wake after grace. The updated restart-after-grace test removes the intervening poll and covers that ordering.

Direction: this is a focused root-cause fix consistent with the grace-window design and its documented post-fold double-counting tradeoff. No additional public API or wire changes.

Verification limits: static review of the one-file incremental diff and surrounding fold/announce lifecycle, building on the prior full-PR review. I did not run tests or benchmarks; Check/Test and platform CI were queued at inspection.

Merge summary:

  • Decision recorded: a path returning after the grace with intact counters counting its earlier traffic once more is an accepted bounded error; no per-path baseline.
  • Review fix (4f8b939): a reannounce that is the first poll after the grace now folds the expired entry before re-arming, so a restarted node no longer regresses the total (regression test updated, failed before the fix).
  • Review fixes (1c7c625): the bench folds every departed node before measuring; the Consumer doc scopes memory to live nodes plus reported keys.
  • Declined: a grace-expiry timer. An idle aggregator cannot grow its node map, so the poll-time sweep suffices (CodeRabbit withdrew it).
  • Merged main twice: kept quest/m0/stats-linger.md deleted (quest: delete stats-linger now that its release backport merged #4888), deleted stats-aggregate-bound.md, dropped the stale Related links in stats-split.md; quest check passes.

Public API: additive aggregate::Config::grace / with_grace. Wire: none.
