Completes quest/m1/fetch-abandonment.md.

Summary

#4531 made the lite publisher stop serving a FETCH once the requester FINs or resets. The Rust and JS lite subscribers did not always send that close when their readers left, so a relay could keep its upstream FETCH open. Both now cancel an abandoned FETCH at every stage, and the release crosses every relay hop.

Rust (rs/moq-net)

  • FetchServeRun watches demand for the whole fetch, not just until the answer:

    • While waiting for the answer (open, send, answer), demand is the group::Request. When the last fetch_group leaves, the FETCH stream is reset with Cancel.
    • Once answered (ingest), demand is any reader of the group, plus joined fetches that have not yet picked it up from the cache. Completion always wins: abandonment is only checked while the group is still short of its FIN. When nobody is left, the partial group is aborted with Error::Cancel and the FETCH stream is reset with Cancel, so a truncated group is never cached as complete. This matches the SUBSCRIBE idle cancel and fix(net): a truncated spliced group fails instead of ending cleanly #4689's rule that a truncated group never ends clean.
    • The abort is atomic with a new reader arriving (group::Producer::abort_unused, pub(crate), the same write_unused pattern as track::Producer::abort_unused). A cache hit that races the last reader leaving keeps the group alive instead of reading Cancel.
  • group::Request::poll_unused (new, public): ready once no fetch_group waits on the request. It also withdraws the attempt under the fetch lock, so a fetch that races the last one leaving either keeps the request alive or queues a fresh one, never joins a dead one. It mirrors track::Request::poll_unused.

  • group::Request::accept now writes NotFound to the joined fetches' result channel. Previously, closing the channel alone told a joined caller that the cached group can't cover (a wider start) to fail. Since the subscriber now keeps the channel open to track joined demand, the write is what fails that caller; the outcome is the same as before.

  • Cache handoff, so an abandoned fetch's abort never reaches a reader that wants the group:

    • A fetch_group that hits the cache holds the group consumer until it is polled, instead of dropping it and re-looking-up later.
    • A cache lookup goes through group::Producer::try_consume (pub(crate), kio's consume_open), so a group aborted mid-lookup is a miss rather than a consumer that reads Cancel.
    • group::Request::accept starts the group at the request's frame_start before caching it. A wider fetch that looks it up before the handler writes now misses, instead of getting a reader that later skips the head it asked for.
    • A rejected Fetching re-checks the cache once more, so an accept that lands between its two checks still resolves it.

JS (@moq/net)

  • The subscriber already cancelled before the answer: untilAbandoned covers the TRACK_INFO and FETCH wait.
  • Mid-response, #runFetchResponse used to break on group.unused() and then group.close() plus stream.close(), which ended the truncated group cleanly. It now resets the stream and aborts the group with a Cancel error.

Tests

  • rs/moq-net/tests/fetch_cancel.rs runs a publisher, one or two relays, and a reader over the mock transport (lite-05, lite-06). It covers three stages:
    • Unanswered: the reader drops a FETCH the publisher holds unanswered. The publisher's group::Request must become unused.
    • Mid-response: the reader reads the first frame and leaves. The publisher's group must become unused, so its serve ended. A fresh fetch must then read the whole group, so no hop cached the truncated head as complete.
    • Drained: the reader reads every frame and leaves at the same instant the FIN arrives (timed with mock link latency). The whole group must stay cached: once the publisher's copy is aborted, a refetch still reads it. This fails if abandonment is checked before ingest completion.
    • Each stage fails without its fix.
  • Model test fetch_request_unused_once_every_fetch_leaves covers the withdrawal.
  • fetch_widens_or_fails_cleanly now keeps the result channel open past the accept and leaves the group unfinished. The uncovered wider caller must still get NotFound; without the accept write it hangs.
  • Model tests fetch_hit_keeps_the_group_wanted (fails without the held hit), fetch_misses_an_abandoned_group, accepted_group_starts_at_the_request (fails without the pre-start), and abort_unused_pairs_with_try_consume (deadlocked with the first try_consume).
  • JS test "the last reader leaving mid-response cancels the fetch" fails (times out) without the change.

API / wire

  • Public API: adds moq_net::group::Request::poll_unused (additive). It lets a Dynamic handler stop serving an abandoned fetch, and the cross-crate test needs it. It is not yet mirrored in moq-ffi's MoqGroupRequest; a follow-up quest will plan a unified Demand handle.
  • Behavior: a joined fetch_group that the accepted group can't cover still fails with NotFound. It now gets that from an explicit write rather than from the channel closing.
  • Behavior: the group::Producer returned by group::Request::accept already starts at frame_start(). A handler that calls start_at(frame_start) as documented sees no difference, and one serving from elsewhere can still move it before the first frame. The frame_start() doc is updated to match.
  • JS: no API change. A fetched group abandoned mid-response now closes with a Cancel error instead of ending cleanly.
  • Wire: none.

The Rust lite subscriber held its upstream FETCH until the publisher
answered, even after every downstream fetch_group gave up. Watch the
group request's demand for the whole wait and reset the FETCH stream
once it leaves, so the release crosses every relay hop.

Adds group::Request::poll_unused, which also withdraws the abandoned
attempt so a later fetch queues a fresh one.

Quest outcome: implemented; just check passes. Left as draft for review.

Open decisions:

  • The quest said "Public API: none", but the cross-crate relay-chain test needs to observe the publisher's request, so this adds group::Request::poll_unused (mirrors track::Request::poll_unused). Recommend keeping it: any Dynamic handler serving fetches wants it. The alternative is pub(crate) plus an in-crate test only.
  • Abandonment is only watched until the publisher answers. Once accepted, the group lands in the shared cache and is filled to completion. Recommend keeping that: the cached group can serve later readers.

Suggested follow-ups:

  • Expose poll_unused on moq-ffi's MoqGroupRequest and the language bindings, once a binding consumer serves fetches.
  • Do the same for the IETF subscriber's FETCH path, if it has the same gap.

(Written by Claude Opus 5.5)

Watch demand through ingest too: once the last reader of a fetched group
leaves, reset the FETCH stream and abort the partial group with Cancel
instead of caching it as complete. @moq/net did the cancel but closed
the truncated group cleanly; it now aborts it.

Revised per the maintainer's decisions:

  1. group::Request::poll_unused stays public. A follow-up quest will plan a unified Demand handle; not done here.
  2. Abandonment is now watched through ingest as well, the same way SUBSCRIBE goes idle. When the last reader leaves after the answer, the FETCH stream is reset with Cancel and the partial group is aborted with Error::Cancel, so it is never cached as complete (matches fix(net): a truncated spliced group fails instead of ending cleanly #4689's rule). The relay-chain test now also abandons mid-response, asserts the publisher's serve ends, and checks that a refetch reads the whole group.
  3. The JS fix is folded in: #runFetchResponse aborts a group abandoned mid-response with a Cancel error instead of closing it cleanly. There is a new test that fails without the change.

just check passes.

Review in Change Stack →

Navigate logical layers of code changes, visualize relationships, and explore their blast radius.

Walkthrough

Rust and JavaScript subscribers cancel FETCH streams when demand ends before the response completes. Rust group and fetch-request models track unused demand and handle requests that cannot resolve to a matching group. Tests cover abandonment before a response, during a partial response, and after draining, including relay paths. The FETCH abandonment quest entry and document were removed.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 84e96

Only 32-bit builds are affected, and only when a peer sends an oversized frame offset. The affected fetch fails with NotFound. Validating the value at the wire boundary would close the gap, and it is not a blocker for merge.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 84e96

The inspected cancellation paths preserve active demand and prevent abandoned, incomplete groups from appearing successfully completed. No introduced security issue was established, but incomplete baseline and deployment coverage leave some uncertainty.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The security-relevant scope is outstanding FETCH work and partial group state along a relay path. Downstream abandonment can release upstream work at successive hops; the inspected controls remain tied to the associated track, group and request.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Request withdrawal rechecks demand under the same fetch lock used for joining and matches result-channel identity before removal. Group abort is conditional on unused state, and closed groups refuse new consumers. These controls prevent stale cleanup from withdrawing replacement attempts or cancelling an active reader.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Incomplete response failures abort the group rather than finalize it. Aborted Rust cache entries become misses, permitting fresh requests; JavaScript retains an outstanding decode across demand rearming and aborts both group and stream on cancellation errors.

ITERATE (reviewed bc4d2f93d6dcb20d1c5fd26aae3f24b64666bbef)

First Grok review (PR left draft earlier; now ready). Completes fetch-abandonment: Rust FetchServeRun watches demand through open/send/answer/ingest and resets with Cancel; mid-response abort matches #4689 (truncated group never ends clean); adds public group::Request::poll_unused + relay-chain tests; JS #runFetchResponse throws Cancel instead of clean-closing an unused mid-group.

Blocking

  1. rs/moq-net/src/lite/subscriber.rs (FetchServeRun::poll): abandon checked before ingest completion can abort a fully received group.
poll_abandoned runs at the top of every loop turn. On Ingest, that is joined unused ∧ producer unused. FrameIngest::poll returns Ready(Ok(())) only when the stream FINs on a frame boundary — i.e. the group is complete and should be finish()ed into cache. Common end path: every frame is already in the producer, the reader drains and drops, FIN is already buffered; the next poll sees unused first and takes the abandon arm (stream.writer.abort(Cancel) + producer.abort(Cancel)) instead of finish(). Result: a complete group is discarded as Cancel, hops cannot serve a later fetch from cache, and upstream work is wasted. The PR text correctly targets partial groups; this path is not partial.
Fix: For Ingest, let ingest completion win. e.g. match ingest.poll(...) — on Ready, finish/abort as today; on Pending, only then if poll_abandoned cancel upstream and abort the group. Keep the existing top-of-loop abandon for Open / Send / Answer only.
Same race in JS js/net/src/lite/subscriber.ts (#runFetchResponse): race([pending, group.closed, unused]) can let unused win over an already-resolved FIN/undefined and throw Cancel instead of group.close() + stream.close(). Prefer stream completion when the decode/FIN is already ready (or treat !next before the idle/Cancel branch).
Worth a regression: drain the full group, drop the reader, assert the cached group finishes (or a refetch is a cache hit / publisher is not asked again), in Rust and JS.

Non-blocking

No separate alternative worth exploring — watching demand through ingest like SUBSCRIBE idle is the right shape; completion must outrank abandon when the FETCH has already FINed.

[P2] Preserve completion of an accepted request's result channel. rs/moq-net/src/lite/subscriber.rs:4318–4321 retains request.result throughout ingest, although Fetching::poll relies on that channel closing to reject callers the accepted cache entry cannot cover. On lite-06: pop a fetch starting at frame 5, let a frame-0 fetch join before the answer, then accept/start the group at 5. The wider caller misses the cache and now stays Pending instead of receiving NotFound. If the original reader leaves, this unsatisfiable caller also keeps joined used, preventing abandonment while a long-lived/stalled group remains open. Preserve the accepted-result signal separately from demand tracking. Extend fetch_widens_or_fails_cleanly through this subscriber path, with the narrower group still unfinished.

I also independently confirm the existing ingest-TOCTOU observation: lines 4153–4154 release the demand lock before 4188–4190 abort. A concurrent cache hit can acquire a reader in between and have its wanted fetch cancelled. Coordinate cancellation atomically with reader acquisition, following the existing track abort_unused approach, before resetting upstream; merely polling ingest first does not close this race. No duplicate inline comment.

Direction: whole-lifetime cancellation and aborting truncated groups are appropriate. The pre-answer locked withdrawal is sound; the JS change uses the existing abort path without expanding the API. Rust adds the documented public request method; wire framing is unchanged.

Verification: static inspection of all changed files plus model/coalescing, kio locking/refcounts, publisher and stream teardown paths. These are source-traced cases, not executed reproductions. Rust/Bun/Nix/just are unavailable here; no local tests, loom or interop ran. Exact-head Check/WASM are queued and Platform is running.

Check ingest abandonment only while the group is still short of its FIN,
and abort atomically with a new reader arriving. The accepted request
writes NotFound for joined fetches it can't cover, since the subscriber
now keeps the result channel open to track their demand.

Addressed the Codex and Grok reviews of bc4d2f93:

  • Completion vs abandonment (Grok, blocking): fixed in Rust. Ingest now polls the stream first and checks demand only while the group is still short of its FIN, so a whole group is finished and cached, never cancelled. The new Drained stage in fetch_cancel.rs uses mock link latency to make the FIN arrive at the instant the reader leaves. It fails with the abandon-first ordering.
  • Ingest TOCTOU (both): fixed. The abort goes through a new group::Producer::abort_unused (pub(crate), the write_unused pattern from track::Producer::abort_unused). A reader arriving after the unused check keeps the group alive, and the run goes back to waiting.
  • Retained result channel (Codex P2): fixed in group::Request::accept, which now writes NotFound to the joined result channel. A joined caller the cached group can't cover fails exactly as it did when the channel closed, even while the subscriber holds the channel open to track demand. That caller then drops, so it no longer keeps joined used. fetch_widens_or_fails_cleanly now keeps the channel open and the group unfinished; without the write it hangs.
  • Same race in JS (Grok): no change. The JS fetched group is a standalone producer whose only readers are the callers' mirrors, with no cache behind it, and the coalescing entry is dropped on close. Once every reader has left, ending it with Cancel or with a clean close is unobservable, and resetting a stream the publisher already FIN'd is harmless.
  • Open abandon writes Dropped (Grok nit): left as is. No waiter remains to read it.

just check passes.

MERGE (reviewed bd33b36566c733d9f178bc34c572ee29c125141e)

Re-review after push from bc4d2f93. Addresses the prior blocking completion-vs-abandon race in Rust: ingest now polls the stream first and only checks demand while still short of FIN; group::Producer::abort_unused makes the mid-ingest abort atomic with a new reader; Request::accept writes NotFound for uncovered joined fetches while the result channel stays open; new Drained stage in fetch_cancel.rs regresses the FIN-at-drop ordering.

Blocking

None.

Non-blocking

  • CI: Check / Test / Platform / WASM / Android / etc. still queued or in progress on this head; no failure observed yet. Land once green.
  • JS race left as-is: #runFetchResponse can still let unused win a race over an already-resolved FIN and Cancel a fully written local group. Acceptable for now: JS fetch groups are not cache-backed, the coalescing entry dies on close, and no remaining reader observes Cancel vs clean close. Matching Rust's completion-first would still be a cheap consistency win if JS ever caches fetched groups.
  • IETF / ffi: Still out of scope (quest: plan Demand everywhere and IETF FETCH abandonment #4696 / Demand unification).

Prior findings: Rust abandon-before-ingest (blocking) and ingest TOCTOU — fixed. JS same-race — intentionally open, unobservable without a cache. Open-abandon Dropped nit — left as is.

Reviewed commit: bd33b36

Delta from bc4d2f9 (one commit, unchanged base): the retained-result-channel finding is fixed. The explicit NotFound in track.rs:3104–3109 releases uncovered joined callers, and the extended test correctly keeps the result channel open and group unfinished. Polling ingest before abandonment also preserves an already-readable FIN.

[P2, earlier handoff finding only partially fixed] Protect the cache lookup through consumer acquisition. group.rs:789–796 protects a consumer already counted, but track.rs:638–643 checks coverage and then calls consume separately. An unused group can be aborted between these calls; group.rs:932–937 still mints a consumer for that closed channel, so a new fetch receives Cancel. The kio write_unused contract specifically requires closed-channel refusal on the acquisition side.

There is also an unprotected handoff before the returned future's first poll: fetch_group:2827–2835 drops its temporary cache-hit consumer and queues no request. Create that future for an unfinished cached group, drop the original reader, allow abandonment, then poll the future. It now has neither a cached group nor a request; Fetching::poll:3240–3248 can wait indefinitely while a handler remains. Preserve cache-hit demand in the returned handle, and make live/coverage validation plus acquisition atomic, with regressions for both interleavings. This continues the prior cancellation finding, not a duplicate inline comment or a claim that this latest commit introduced it.

Direction: reusing write_unused and the existing outcome channel is focused; the remaining work is the end-to-end demand handoff. No additional public API or wire change in this delta.

Verification: source inspection of the four changed files and surrounding cache, kio and ingest paths. The interleavings above are source-traced, not executed reproductions. Rust/Bun/Nix/just are unavailable; no local tests, loom or interop ran. Exact-head Check/Platform/WASM are queued; the author's reported just check pass was not independently reproduced.

A fetch_group that hits the cache now holds the group consumer until
polled, so an abandoned upstream fetch can't abort the group in
between. A cache lookup never hands out a consumer for a group aborted
mid-lookup, and a rejection re-checks the cache an accept may have
just filled.

Addressed the reviews of bd33b365 in 3820db2d:

  • Codex: unprotected handoff before the first poll: fixed. fetch_group now holds the cache-hit consumer in the returned Fetching and resolves from it, so the group stays wanted until the caller polls. Regression: fetch_hit_keeps_the_group_wanted, which fails without the change (abort_unused succeeds and the fetch is lost).
  • Codex: lookup vs consume not atomic with the abort: fixed. poll_fetch_cached goes through a new group::Producer::try_consume. It consumes first, so a later abort_unused sees the reader, then refuses if the abort already landed, so the lookup counts as a miss and queues a fresh request. This is the acquisition-side pairing from the write_unused contract. fetch_misses_an_abandoned_group covers the outcome; the exact interleaving isn't reachable deterministically from a test.
  • CodeRabbit: re-check the cache before failing with a rejection: applied. A rejected Fetching looks at the cache once more before returning the error. No test, since it is an interleaving between two locks.

Re-review after push from bd33b365. Closes the cache-hit vs abandon race: a fetch_group that already resolved from the track now holds the group consumer until polled (FetchingKind::Plain.hit), try_consume turns an abort that lands mid-lookup into a miss, and a rejection re-checks the cache before failing so an accept that filled between the two polls still wins. Model tests cover both sides.

Blocking

None.

Non-blocking

  • CI: Replay passed; Check / Test / Platform / WASM / Android / Release JS still pending on this head. Land once green.
  • group::Producer::try_consume (group.rs ~959): Implemented as consume() then is_closed, not via kio::ProducerWeak::try_consume / consume_open. Sound today because abort_unused's write_unused Idle guard holds the state lock across close, so the mint either bumps before teardown (Used) or observes closed and is dropped. Prefer the weak/consume_open path so the pairing matches kio's loom invariant and stays correct if abort ever stops going through write_unused.
  • Prior still open (unchanged): JS FIN-vs-unused race left by design; IETF / moq-ffi Demand unification still out of scope.

Prior findings: Rust completion-vs-abandon + ingest TOCTOU — still fixed. This push adds the held-hit / miss-on-abort handoff the relay path needed once abandonment could race a cache hit.

[P2] Drop the read guard before rejecting the temporary consumer. In rs/moq-net/src/model/group.rs:959–961, the temporary returned by state.read() holds the mutex through the entire then_some call (Rust temporary-scope rules). If abandonment already closed the group, then_some drops its consumer argument while that guard is still held. This is the last consumer, and kio::Consumer::drop:158–172 locks the same mutex to wake unused waiters: a self-deadlock. It is reachable when abort_unused wins between the coverage check and acquisition, precisely the race this helper handles.

Store the open/closed boolean in a separate statement so the guard drops before then_some. Add a direct regression that aborts an unused group and calls try_consume(), expecting None. The new fetch_misses_an_abandoned_group test does not exercise this branch: covering_group rejects its already-aborted slot before calling the helper.

Prior findings: holding the cache-hit consumer in track.rs:2838–2843 fixes the pre-poll demand gap. Acquiring demand before testing closure is the right pairing with abort_unused, subject to the destructor issue above. The cache recheck before returning a rejection also addresses the existing CodeRabbit observation; no duplicate inline finding.

Direction: focused fixes using existing ownership and locking primitives; keep this approach. The two-file delta adds no public API or wire change.

Verification: static review against bd33b36, one commit with unchanged base, including kio guard/refcount/drop behavior and the new tests. This deadlock is source-traced, not an executed reproduction. Rust/Bun/Nix/just are unavailable here; no local tests or loom ran. Exact-head Check/Platform/WASM are queued; the author's reported just check pass was not independently reproduced.

try_consume dropped the rejected consumer while still holding the group
lock, deadlocking when an abort won the race. Use kio's consume_open,
whose closed check and count share the write_unused lock.

Addressed the reviews of 3820db2d in 086a810c:

  • Codex P2: try_consume self-deadlock: fixed. The old then_some dropped the rejected consumer while the read guard was still held. try_consume now goes through kio's ProducerWeak::try_consume (consume_open), which checks closed and bumps the count under the same lock as write_unused. This also covers Grok's note about matching kio's loom-checked pairing. New regression abort_unused_pairs_with_try_consume calls try_consume on an aborted group; it deadlocks with the old version.
  • CodeRabbit: recheck the held hit's coverage before returning it: declined. A held group's first frame can't rise, so coverage checked at creation still holds. And because the hit is held, abort_unused can't take it. Only a real abort can, and that error is the right answer for the caller.
  • Release JS Packages failure on the previous head was a nix cache download error (HTTP 416), not this change.

just check passes.

MERGE (reviewed 086a810c8c9e424d16647319ef93108b1aa2c5a2)

Re-review after push from 3820db2d. Fixes a real deadlock in group::Producer::try_consume: the old consume() + is_closed/then_some path dropped the rejected consumer while the read guard from the closed check was still held, so an abort that won the race could block forever on Consumer drop. It now goes through kio::ProducerWeak::try_consume → consume_open, so the closed check and count share write_unused's lock. New model test abort_unused_pairs_with_try_consume covers both sides.

Blocking

None.

Non-blocking

  • CI: Still pending/queued on this head (Check / Test / Platform / WASM / Android / Replay / Release JS); no failure observed yet. Land once green.
  • Prior still open (unchanged): JS FIN-vs-unused race left by design; IETF / moq-ffi Demand unification still out of scope.

Prior findings: Rust completion-vs-abandon, ingest TOCTOU, and cache-hit handoff — still fixed. The previous NB on preferring kio's consume_open path — fixed, and turned out to be load-bearing (deadlock), not just style.

Reviewed commit: 086a810

The try_consume self-deadlock is fixed: group.rs:939–940 uses kio's locked closed-check/count acquisition, without constructing a consumer on the rejected path. The new abort_unused_pairs_with_try_consume test directly covers the previously deadlocking case.

Existing P2 coverage finding remains actionable. I independently confirm CodeRabbit's held-hit observation, rather than adding another inline comment. A held consumer prevents abort_unused, but does not freeze the group's starting offset: Producer::start_at:488–497 can still raise it before any frame is written, regardless of readers.

A deterministic model case is: accept a request starting at frame 3; before the handler calls start_at(3), construct a frame-0 fetch for that cached group; then start/write the group and poll the held fetch. insert_group_request:1233–1239 initially publishes the empty group at offset 0, and Fetching::poll:3240–3245 later clamps the held reader to 3 and returns success, silently skipping the requested head. The lite subscriber also calls accept before start_at. Establish stable coverage before publishing the cache entry, or revalidate the held hit and arrange a real miss/error path; add this regression. This issue predates this one-file delta.

Direction: the atomic kio acquisition is simpler and appropriate; no new defect found in that fix, and no additional public API/wire change. The prior result-channel and held-demand fixes remain intact.

Verification: static inspection against 3820db2, one commit with unchanged base, plus cache publication, cursor and kio internals. The coverage case is source-traced, not executed. Rust/Bun/Nix/just are unavailable; no local tests or loom ran. Exact-head Check/Platform/WASM are running; Release JS, Android and Audio quality succeeded.

The group was cached at offset 0 until the handler called start_at, so
a wider fetch looking it up in between got a reader that later skipped
the head it asked for. Start it before it is visible.

Addressed the Codex review of 086a810c in 84e965dc:

  • Held hit coverage, before start_at (Codex, confirming CodeRabbit): fixed at the source rather than by revalidating the hit. insert_group_request now calls start_at(frame_start) before the group is cached, so the accepted group never appears to begin at 0. A wider fetch in that window misses and queues its own request. This was already possible on main for a fetch polled in the window; holding the hit just made it easier to reach. Regression: accepted_group_starts_at_the_request (Codex's case), which fails without the change.
  • This changes the public contract slightly: the producer accept returns already starts at frame_start(). Handlers that follow the documented start_at(frame_start) see no difference, and start_at can still move it before the first frame. The frame_start() doc now says so.

just check passes.

Reviewed commit: 84e965d

No new actionable findings in the one-commit delta from 086a810; the base is unchanged.

The reported accept/start_at coverage window is fixed at its source: track.rs:1233–1243 establishes frame_start before publishing the group. A frame-0 fetch can no longer hold that newly accepted frame-3 group as a whole-group cache hit. The new accepted_group_starts_at_the_request regression checks that a wider fetch queues its own request in that window. This addresses the existing CodeRabbit finding independently confirmed in my previous review; no duplicate inline comment.

Direction: pre-initializing the group is simpler than adding revalidation/retry machinery to held hits. The documented behavior change is appropriate: accept now returns a producer already positioned at the requested frame; existing matching start_at calls remain valid. No wire change. The earlier demand-retention, result-channel and deadlock fixes remain intact.

Verification: static inspection of the full delta, cache replacement/publication and the lite/IETF handler paths. Rust/Bun/Nix/just are unavailable here, so I did not execute the regression, repository tests or loom, nor independently reproduce the author's just check pass. Exact-head Check/Platform/WASM are running; Release JS, Android and Audio quality succeeded.

MERGE (reviewed 84e965dc50568a15e0fce02c8496bba58fc1c04d)

Re-review after push from 086a810c. Starts the accepted fetch group at the request's frame_start before it is visible in the cache, so a wider fetch cannot get a reader that later clamps past the head it asked for.

Prior findings: completion-vs-abandon, abort_unused, cache-hit hold-until-polled, and try_consume/consume_open deadlock remain fixed. JS FIN-vs-unused still by design. The Codex/CodeRabbit held-hit coverage gap this push targets is closed.

Blocking

None.

Non-blocking

  • CI: Replay / Android / Release JS Packages passed; Check / Test / WASM / Windows / macOS still pending on this head. Land once green.
  • start_at fail after claim_sequence: insert_group_request can now return BoundsExceeded after removing a non-covering prior slot and before commit_group. Only realistic for a ludicrous frame_start (usize::MAX); exotic, not worth blocking.
  • Redundant handler start_at: Callers like libmoq's group_request_accept still call start_at(frame_start) after accept; idempotent before the first frame and matches the updated docs. Fine to leave.

No new issues in the delta beyond the NBs above.

Reject out-of-range frame_start before accepting the request.

The shared u64 decoder does not apply a usize bound. On 32-bit targets, a wire value at or above usize::MAX can reach group::Producer::start_at, which returns BoundsExceeded.

insert_group_request claims the sequence first. Request::accept then removes the request and reports NotFound to joined fetches when insertion fails. Reject the value before Request::accept, at the applicable wire/request boundary. Moving only the check before claim_sequence would not fix the NotFound result propagation.

On the 84e965dc reviews:

  • CodeRabbit: validate frame_start against usize at the wire boundary: declined here. Before this PR, the same out-of-range start failed in the handler's own start_at right after accept. It now fails inside accept, and the lite subscriber already aborts the stream on an accept error. The only extra cost is the one Grok noted: a non-covering prior slot is evicted first, which only happens when frame_start reaches usize::MAX. Validating at decode time across lite and IETF is a separate change, if wanted.
  • Grok non-blocking notes: acknowledged. The redundant handler start_at calls are harmless and match the updated docs.

Merge summary for 84e965dc:

  • Changes:
    • Rust lite FetchServeRun cancels an abandoned FETCH at every stage (before the answer, and mid-response with an abort of the truncated group), and a FIN that has arrived always wins over abandonment.
    • The fetch cache handoff keeps demand intact: held hits, try_consume/abort_unused pairing, the accept writes NotFound, and accepted groups pre-start at frame_start.
    • JS aborts a group abandoned mid-response instead of closing it cleanly.
  • Decisions (maintainer): group::Request::poll_unused stays public; a unified Demand handle is a follow-up quest. Cancel after the answer too, aborting the partial group. The JS fix is folded in.
  • Declined review items: the JS FIN-vs-unused race (unobservable, since there is no JS cache), wire-boundary usize validation of frame_start, and revalidating the held hit's coverage (fixed at the source instead).
  • Follow-ups: a unified Demand handle (incl. moq-ffi), and IETF FETCH abandonment (quest: plan Demand everywhere and IETF FETCH abandonment #4696).

CI green, Codex: no findings, Grok: MERGE. Enabling auto-merge.
