feat(mux): report each TS elementary stream's access units at export - #4577
Conversation
Export::stats returns ts::Stats with the import's per-PID row for every elementary stream written: units, and quiet on the output's own PCR. The other fields stay zero at egress. `moq export ts` logs a row that stops advancing, as `moq import ts` does. Quest: quest/m2/ts-export-liveness.md. Also corrects the PCR repetition limit to TR 101 290 V1.4.1's 100 ms in the exporter comment and the test/ts grader defaults, and describes the exporter's current padding in test/ts. One P2 finding inline: queued output can be counted and then discarded on an error/resume.
Direction: Reusing the ingest schema and PCR-based meter is a focused approach; the additive Export::stats() API needs no wire change. Keep the span buffering, but tie accounting to returned output (or roll back discarded queued slices); counting during mux would have the same problem. The shared logger avoids unnecessary new policy.
Verification: Read all nine changed files and relevant source, buffering, discontinuity, resume and logging paths. Both new liveness tests pass in the CI Test job; Check, Platform, Android and Interop report success. No local Rust/Nix toolchain was available; the error/resume case below was traced, not executed.

[P2] Commit liveness at the returned-output boundary
emit() only queues these bytes. poll_next() then calls mux() and fill() (lines 891–895) before returning a queued frame, so either can fail after this count advances. For example, a valid AAC frame followed by an 8,185-byte AAC frame causes advance() to queue/count the valid unit, then ADTS framing rejects the next frame and poll_next() returns Err without returning the valid unit. resume() calls rewind(), which clears that queue but leaves liveness intact. Thus units permanently includes unwritten output, and the PCR meter at line 1998 can include discarded clock packets too. Apply the unit/PCR updates when the corresponding output is returned, or roll back discarded queued slices. Please cover the error/resume path with a regression comparing stats against returned PES units.

Fixed in 3c80593. Each queued frame now carries its own tally of PCRs and unit starts, applied in pop() when the frame is returned, so a rewind() that clears the queue drops those counts too. export_stats_skip_output_a_failure_discards covers your AAC case (a valid frame, then one ADTS can't frame, then resume) and checks the stats against the returned PES units after the error and after the resume. It read 10 against 9 before the fix.

The exporter backfills at most a second of PCRs across a media gap, then steps its clock forward unflagged. Liveness dropped that step as a corrupt PCR, so a stopped track's quiet undercounted by the rest of the gap. The exporter's own PCRs now count every forward step; the importer's filter is unchanged. No new findings in the follow-up. The private written_pcr path (rs/moq-mux/src/container/ts/import.rs:1554-1568) counts long output-clock gaps while preserving the importer's corrupt-PCR filter. The five-second-gap regression covers the reported undercount.
The earlier P2 remains: export.rs:1881-1883 and 1998 update liveness before queued output is returned; an error at 891-895 followed by resume() can discard that queue at 1350 without undoing those updates. Commit accounting at the returned-output boundary and cover error/resume. This is the existing finding, so no duplicate inline comment.
Direction: A focused, low-complexity clock fix that keeps the shared meter and adds no public API or wire change beyond the original additive stats API. The queued-output accounting still needs attention.
Verification: Reviewed the three-file follow-up and related clock, discontinuity, buffering and recovery paths. CI Test logs confirm all three export-liveness tests and the importer wrap/discontinuity tests pass. Check, Platform, Android and Interop report success. No local Rust/Nix toolchain was available; the error/resume path was traced, not executed.

emit() credited a span's units and PCRs as it queued them, so an error in poll_next before they were returned, followed by resume() dropping the queue, left the stats counting output that never went out. Each queued frame now carries its own tally, applied when it is returned. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

No new findings. This addresses the earlier P2: rs/moq-mux/src/container/ts/export.rs:940-953 commits PCR/discontinuity and unit tallies only when returning a frame; 1376-1380 drops unreturned tallies on rewind. Unit-start offsets are assigned to the matching output slice at 1988-1995. The regression at export_test.rs:5478-5535 covers invalid AAC followed by resume and compares stats with returned PES starts.
Direction: Focused correction at the output boundary, with private bookkeeping rather than rollback complexity. No additional public API or wire change; the prior long-PCR-gap fix remains intact.
Verification: Reviewed the two-file delta and related mux, slice, clock, drain and resume paths. No local Rust/Nix toolchain was available, so the regression was inspected, not executed here. At review time Android passed; Check/Test, Platform and Interop were still queued.

# Conflicts: # rs/moq-mux/src/container/ts/stats.rs
The T-STD questline (#4640) landed on main, so this branch now targets main. - Harness files merged against the questline head the branch started from. - Quests: delay.md and byte-schedule.md are done and deleted here; references repointed, and the T-STD README records t0ms's CNN grading. - #4577's per-stream export stats ported onto the slot schedule: a unit counts once the slot carrying its first packet is returned. Export::stats returns ts::stats::Export (rows plus the release clock's dropped, drift and out_of_tolerance), with From<stats::Export> for ts::Stats for stats::Log; ts::export is private again. moq export ts logs the release counters. - #4652 skips a stalled group once the next group's start falls the budget behind, so the export's sources skip at half the delay: with the whole delay the group after a skip arrived at its deadline. - The jitter buffer waits only for audio, video and PES tracks, not sparse sections. - At end of stream a past-due unit ignores its decoder buffer, so an oversized last unit cannot hold the stream open. - Tests: a timeline restarting at zero fails the export (#4725); main's new export tests moved to with_delay. Problem
moq export tscan lose one track while everything else keeps going. In #3533 video and primary audio stalled at the exporter while PSI and the other PIDs kept flowing and the relay kept sending. No TS-level check sees that; only a per-PID liveness detector on a subscriber caught it (T27). The importer reports per-PID liveness since #4502; the exporter reported nothing.Approach
Follows quest/m2/ts-export-liveness.md.
Export::statsreturnsts::Stats, one row per elementary stream written:unitscounts the PES (or section) written per frame, quietis the time since the last one on the PCR the exporter writes. Same meter as the importer (Liveness), fed the output PCR, reset on a flagged discontinuity. Units count when a span leaves the mux buffer, so a rewind doesn't count what it drops. Rows are named by the suffix an import of the output would give the PID. Frame-sync fields stay zero.moq export tssamples it once a second throughts::stats::Log, likemoq import ts. No threshold in-tree.compliance.py/pcr-timing.py, and the stale "VBR, no null packets, PCR per frame" sentence intest/ts.Local run, primary audio PID dropped mid-run:
In
out.ts, PID 121 goes to zero after ~19 s while PAT, video, AC-3 and teletext carry on.Impact
Export::stats() -> ts::Stats(additive).moq export tslogs a line when an elementary stream stops.test/ts:--pcr-repetition-msand--repetition-msdefault to 100 instead of 40.pcr-value-intervalis a hard check, so the default gate is looser; the exporter's grid is 25 ms either way.Alternatives
muxtime: simpler, but counts spans a rewind throws away.trackis&'static stron main; the ownedStringcomes with the dev rename (quest/m1/ts-stats-module.md).Follow-ups
ts::stats::Logat its 1 s interval, somewhat more at egress than ingest (21 lines against 16 in the same run). No window in-tree by design, so this is for a consumer or a separate/quest-plan.
