Summary

Publish safe effective model aliases as row IDs in the raw OpenAI-compatible GET /v1/models list when preferModelAliasIds: true; the default remains off. Promoted rows retain the previous qualified ID in native_id and preserve alias_of. Native IDs continue to route.

Keep the qualified ID when a short alias is ambiguous, shadows another route, or would produce a synthetic Fast selector that ingress cannot parse. Codex (client_version) and Anthropic-specific discovery retain their existing identities; this option does not rewrite those catalogs or add duplicate Codex entries.

Maintainer follow-up fixes the alias collision and wrong-provider routing cases, preserves built-in alias Fast discovery, registers the test in both layout maps, and documents the option. Independent follow-up also preserves Cursor Fast remaps, validates the optional boolean in the config schema, and teaches doctor to recognize retained native_id values. Two review rounds using anthropic2/claude-opus-5-5 at high effort pass the final implementation. The original feature is by @rrmlima (source head c64e051d20647699317394ec1e376f4c2aa59b80). The contributor commit is retained.

Verification

All local commands used fresh OPENCODEX_HOME=$(mktemp -d) CODEX_HOME=$(mktemp -d); server tests used OS-assigned ports.

  • bun test tests/server/prefer-model-alias-ids.test.ts tests/providers/provider-model-aliases.test.ts tests/test-layout.test.ts tests/test-layout-tooling.test.ts tests/codex-integration/fast-row.test.ts tests/codex-integration/fast-row-listing.test.ts tests/providers/fast-row-ingress.test.ts tests/providers/cursor/cursor-fast-listing.test.ts tests/codex-integration/doctor.test.ts — 204 pass, 0 fail.
  • bun test tests/ci-workflows/file-size-ratchet.test.ts tests/ci-workflows/structure-ssot.test.ts — 60 pass, 0 fail.
  • bun run typecheck, bun run structure:check, bun run privacy:scan — passed.
  • cd docs-site && bun install --frozen-lockfile && ASTRO_TELEMETRY_DISABLED=1 bun run build — passed, 577 pages.
  • New collision and wrong-provider cases failed on the original PR, passed with the fix, and passed against clean origin/dev. The built-in alias Fast regression likewise failed before the fix and passed on clean origin/dev.
  • Identity comparisons for Codex and Anthropic catalogs ignore native-list ordering: a warm-up-dependent ordering difference reproduced on clean origin/dev.

The full suite and test:changed were not run: other worktrees are testing concurrently, and the focused server/routing/Fast/layout/structure coverage exercises this change. Broader Linux/macOS/Windows validation is delegated to exact-head manual CI; queued CI is not passing evidence. No GUI files are changed relative to dev.

  • Full Linux/macOS/Windows manual CI: run on ci/pr-7173, exact head d29f613214e7f7d39ba6e0b1a50c7c7943520b39 — queued at dispatch; this is not passing CI evidence.

Checklist

  • Scope stays focused and avoids unrelated cleanup.
  • Docs or release notes were updated when needed.
  • Security-sensitive changes were reviewed for secrets, auth, and unsafe defaults.

Review readiness

  • Required local validation passed with its scope documented.
  • Branch is on the latest dev commit.
  • All correct Codex and CodeRabbit findings are fixed.
  • Ready for review.

The author owns the review-readiness attestation; maintainer triage does not tick it on their behalf.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added the optional preferModelAliasIds setting. When enabled, eligible aliases appear as model IDs in /v1/models, with the original provider/model ID available as native_id. Both IDs remain routable.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Model discovery now recognizes original IDs exposed through native_id.
  • Documentation
    • Documented the setting and clarified that models with ambiguous or ineligible aliases retain their existing IDs.

Review readiness checklist

This PR stays in draft until every box below is ticked. Tick all four boxes once the requirements are met:

  • Required local validation passed; commands, results, and any full-suite exception are documented.

  • I pushed my PR to a recent dev commit (at most 10 behind; a maintainer may still ask for the exact tip before merge).

  • I resolved all correct Codex and CodeRabbit findings.

  • My PR is ready for review.

…in /v1/models

When `preferModelAliasIds: true` is set in the config, the `/v1/models`
endpoint publishes each model's effective alias (from `modelAliases` or
builtin patterns) as the row `id` instead of `provider/nativeId`.

The original `provider/nativeId` is preserved in a new `native_id` field
so clients that need the upstream identity can still read it. The existing
`alias_of` field remains for backward compatibility.

**Why:**
Operators who configure model aliases (e.g. `SEK-glm-4.7-flash` instead of
`Seek/glm-4.7-flash`) currently need per-harness synchronization scripts to
propagate those names to every downstream tool (Codex CLI, Command Code,
Claude Code, Hermes). With this flag, the proxy itself becomes the single
source of truth: every client that reads `/v1/models` discovers the
operator-chosen short names directly.

**Default: false** — no behavior change for existing installations.

Includes 3 integration tests exercising the flag on/off and the fallback
for models without aliases.

📝 Walkthrough

The change adds the optional preferModelAliasIds setting. When enabled, /v1/models uses eligible aliases as model IDs and includes the original public ID in native_id. The doctor exposure check also recognizes non-empty native_id values.

Changes: Model alias IDs

Layer / File(s) Summary
Configure and return alias-based model IDs
src/types/config.ts, src/config/schema/config-schema.ts, src/server/index/model-alias-id.ts, src/server/index/serve-options.ts, tests/server/prefer-model-alias-ids.test.ts, docs-site/src/content/docs/reference/configuration/routing.md, structure/config.md, structure/catalog.md, scripts/test-layout/layout.json, tests/fixtures/test-layout-expected.json
Adds the optional setting and promotes an alias only when preview routing resolves it to the row’s provider and model and the Fast-row guard passes. Promoted rows include the original public ID in native_id. Tests cover alias routing, ambiguous and shadowed aliases, Fast siblings, and unchanged discovery identities. Documentation describes the setting and its default.
Include native IDs in doctor exposure checks
src/cli/doctor.ts, tests/server/prefer-model-alias-ids.test.ts
The doctor exposure check includes non-empty native_id values. Invalid or oversized values make the fetch result unusable. A test checks exposure for a catalog row with an alias ID and native ID.
