Summary

Advisor currently provides little visibility into its extra model calls and cannot automatically ask for help after a repair fails. Add recent consultation activity and an opt-in adaptive policy: initial advice follows orientation evidence (a tool call or result); failed-repair advice requires a failed validation, a completed file edit, and a new failure of the same command in the same directory. Repeated command failures alone do not qualify for failed-repair advice.

  • Keep initial and failed-repair claims separate, attach bounded source evidence, and deduplicate concurrent events. Unknown commands, ambiguous output, arbitrary Code Mode programs and shell-based edits supply no automatic trigger.
  • Reserve an adaptive task allowance of 1–3 attempts before dispatch, including manual calls. Private SQLite storage preserves the allowance across requests, restarts and worker changes; a missing stable identity disables automatic adaptive calls. The task window expires after 24 hours.
  • Show up to 100 process-local activity records with trigger, status, models, requested → adapter-mapped effort, duration and reported tokens. Retain metadata for at most 24 hours. Task text, commands, advice and thread IDs are excluded. Unknown effort/usage remains unreported.
  • Preserve versioned sharing consent, lazy activation, separate user-role advisory data, normal loopback routing, three consultations per request and four worker continuations. Add CLI/API access, all 11 GUI locales, translated docs, and narrow-screen form/table behavior.

This is the observability and evidence-trigger follow-up to the merged Advisor runtime. Model selection remains with #7114; semantic stagnation detection, completion review, monetary budgets and adoption scoring are outside this change.

Verification

Core tests use the repository-pinned Bun 1.4.3. The focused set covers 283 cases across Advisor, management routing, layout/surface guards, file-size limits and native Chat policy. Five native Chat socket cases were rerun successfully with loopback-listen permission after the sandbox refused the bind. Final source follow-ups passed 23 budget/adaptive/wiring cases and 43 evidence/legacy-plan cases.

GUI: cd gui && bun test tests/advisor-save-feedback.test.tsx (5 passed, pinned Bun), bun run build, bun run lint:i18n, and bun run lint passed. Docs: frozen install reported no changes; bun run build completed for 577 pages and validated 81,224 internal links. git diff --check passed.

Playwright checked the actual Advisor component with real settings/activity handlers and deterministic local expert fixtures: save 2 → 3 consultations, reload with server/UI both reporting 3, initial/failed-repair/budget-blocked activity, 1280px desktop and 390px mobile. Mobile controls remain inside the panel and the activity table scrolls independently. Fixture calls incurred no provider charges and used temporary state.

The user requested core tests only. Full-suite/import-graph-wide validation remains for CI; live paid-provider behavior has not been exercised. Independent maintainer security review is pending for the management read and capability-gated reasoning diagnostics. Ready for review with this documented focused-validation exception. Hosted required CI still needs maintainer workflow approval; it is not passing evidence yet. Maintainer security review remains required before merge.

Readiness audit: fixed repair-event deduplication across history shifts by deriving event identity from the paired tool-call IDs rather than message positions. The regression failed before the fix and passed afterward. On 2779b709aa71fb5fd749ad2c79074948969d2a81, the evidence/adaptive/Responses-wiring core set passed 38 tests, and typecheck, structure checks and privacy scan passed. The unchanged GUI and documentation results above remain applicable.

No inline bot findings or submitted reviews were present at the readiness check. CodeRabbit skipped review while this PR was Draft; review automation runs independently after Ready.

Advisor lane verification (2026-10-15)

Head: 82ee7f6e7b48016c1059c1ed858c42556fd9a122.

  • Fixed refusal reporting: per-request consultation exhaustion now returns/records limit, independently of durable task budget refusals. The activity badge says “Blocked” in every locale rather than assuming all refusals are budget failures.
  • Regression check before runtime fix: bun test tests/advisor/advisor-adaptive.test.ts — 8 passed / 1 failed on the updated request-limit assertion; after the fix, bun test tests/advisor/ tests/server/advisor-routes.test.ts — 183 passed / 0 failed.
  • (cd gui && bun test --isolate tests/advisor-save-feedback.test.tsx): 5 passed / 0 failed, including the refusal badge regression.
  • bun run typecheck, bun run structure:check, bun run privacy:scan, bun scripts/file-size-ratchet.ts, git diff --check: exit 0.
  • bun run build:gui passed on the original feature tree; after the locale fix, (cd gui && bun run build && bun run lint && bun run lint:i18n) passed.
  • Full cross-platform CI: https://github.com/lidge-jun/opencodex/actions/runs/38713051807 (exact final head on ci/pr-7124; supersedes the run for e00fe1292).

All lane commands used fresh OPENCODEX_HOME=$(mktemp -d) CODEX_HOME=$(mktemp -d) sandboxes. Focused local coverage was used because independent worktrees are testing concurrently; the standalone full suite was not run on this PR head. Live-provider consultations were not run. Cross-platform CI below is queued, not passing evidence.

Real GUI builds served by sandboxed proxies on ports 18741/18742/18745. Screenshot capture used node /tmp/shot-advisor/capture.mjs with scratch-installed playwright-core. The installed /Applications/Google Chrome.app timed out before browser initialization, so capture used Chromium headless shell 154. Synthetic model-catalog rows are used for the dropdown; no model calls or settings saves were made. No browser page errors or horizontal overflow at 1440×1200.

Advisor adaptive trigger guidance on mobile

Local interaction test: start at origin/dev (7640a942b), merge #7114, then #7134, then #7124. The first two merge cleanly. Adding #7124 requires preserving both changes in gui/src/pages/Advisor.tsx, gui/tests/advisor-save-feedback.test.tsx, structure/advisor.md, structure/gui-and-management-api.md, and tests/advisor/advisor-responses-wiring.test.ts. The locally resolved union passes 248 backend/layout tests, 12 GUI tests, root typechecking and the GUI build. The earlier resolved union also completed bun run test:changed: 15,454 passed / 35 skipped / 0 failed across 628 files; the later refusal-reporting fixes were validated with focused tests. Recommended integration order: #7134 and #7114 first (either order), then resolve #7124 against the landed tree and rerun its exact-head CI. No PR was merged.

#5955 is already integrated as 13212e6ef; #6617 as e2b6eef5c. These are the foundation/admission fixes, not open duplicate PRs.

CodeRabbit fix round (2026-10-15)

Head: ba22700fd43a3df53061bc133225859e165ff830, a normal fix commit on the contributor branch; it already contains current origin/dev (60bf4c7e0, including #7114). Integration still waits for #7134. No PR was merged or marked ready manually.

  • Verified the runtime: initial consultation accepts orientation evidence (a tool call or result); failed-repair evidence requires failure → completed file edit → a new failure of the same validation command in the same directory. Repeated failures alone are not a separate repair trigger. Updated the adaptive note in all 11 GUI locales. All eight docs-site Advisor pages already describe this contract, so docs-site is unchanged.
  • The allowance test now finds “Consultations per task” by label text, follows HTMLLabelElement.control, and asserts that the associated control is a select. Removed the stale “PR1” label from the present-tense structure contract.
  • Replied with the fix SHA and resolved review threads 4283401401, 4283401412 and 4283401422. The repeated-command portion of 4283401412 was qualified against the actual collector rather than adding an unsupported trigger.

Every test/build/check used fresh OPENCODEX_HOME=$(mktemp -d) CODEX_HOME=$(mktemp -d) sandboxes. Local evidence on this head:

cd gui
bun run lint # exit 0
bun run lint:i18n # exit 0
bun ../scripts/test-with-pinned-bun.ts --isolate tests/advisor-save-feedback.test.tsx
# 12 passed / 0 failed
bun run build # exit 0
bunx react-doctor@0.9.11 . --scope changed --base origin/dev --blocking warning --no-supply-chain -y
# 100/100, no issues, exit 0
cd ..
bun run typecheck # exit 0
bun run structure:check # exit 0
bun scripts/test-with-pinned-bun.ts tests/advisor
# 198 passed / 0 failed, 14 files
bun run privacy:scan # exit 0
bun scripts/file-size-ratchet.ts # exit 0
bun run build:gui # exit 0, including package preparation
git diff --check # exit 0

Focused coverage was used because other worktrees run tests concurrently; full-suite and cross-platform coverage remain with CI. No paid-provider calls were made. The current screenshots above come from the real GUI build served by a sandboxed proxy on port 18754; only catalog rows were synthetic, and selecting adaptive changed the unsaved form only. Installed Google Chrome timed out during initialization (browserType.launch: Timeout 15000ms exceeded), so capture used Chromium headless shell 154 via scratch-installed Playwright. Desktop 1440×1200 and mobile 390×1200 have no page errors or horizontal overflow. Screenshot assets are on pr-assets, linked by immutable commit SHA; no image is on the PR branch.

Cross-platform CI for this exact head: https://github.com/lidge-jun/opencodex/actions/runs/38741937444 — queued, not passing evidence. Cancelled superseded dispatches 38740138880, 38734416454, 38733037618 and 38713051807. Required CI and the previously documented maintainer security review remain outstanding before integration.

📝 Walkthrough

Advisor now supports evidence-based adaptive consultations. Manual and automatic consultations share a persistent per-task budget. The change adds bounded activity metadata through the management API, CLI, and GUI, and records reasoning-effort evidence for Advisor calls.

Changes: Adaptive Advisor consultations

Layer / File(s) Summary
Policy settings and durable task budget
src/advisor/settings.ts, src/advisor/budget.ts, src/types/config.ts, src/cli/advisor.ts, src/server/management/advisor-routes.ts, gui/src/pages/Advisor.tsx, tests/advisor/advisor-budget.test.ts, tests/advisor/advisor-settings.test.ts
Configuration adds the adaptive policy and maxConsultationsPerTask, defaulting to 3 with a valid range of 1–3. Manual and automatic calls share durable SQLite reservations. The CLI, management route, and GUI accept the settings.
Repair evidence and consultation flow
src/advisor/evidence.ts, src/advisor/evidence-tool.ts, src/advisor/context.ts, src/advisor/runtime.ts, src/advisor/consult.ts, tests/advisor/advisor-evidence.test.ts, tests/advisor/advisor-adaptive.test.ts, tests/advisor/advisor-responses-wiring.test.ts
Adaptive consultations use paired tool-call and result evidence for a failed validation, a successful edit, and a repeated failure of the same validation. The runtime applies identity, deduplication, request-limit, and task-budget checks before consultation.
Activity metadata and reporting
src/advisor/activity.ts, src/server/inference/advisor-diagnostics.ts, src/server/management/advisor-routes.ts, src/server/management/companion-routes.ts, src/server/management/route-registry.ts, src/cli/advisor.ts, gui/src/pages/advisor/AdvisorActivity.tsx, gui/src/pages/Advisor.tsx, gui/src/i18n/*, tests/server/advisor-routes.test.ts, gui/tests/advisor-save-feedback.test.tsx
The activity store keeps up to 100 metadata entries for 24 hours. The API and CLI expose snapshots, and the Advisor page polls the API while visible. The server records recognized reasoning-effort evidence for internal Advisor calls.
Documentation and routing descriptions
docs-site/src/content/docs/*/reference/configuration/advisor.md, skills/ocx/references/01_surface_agents-routing.md, structure/advisor.md, structure/gui-and-management-api.md, structure/INDEX.md, structure/manifest.json
Documentation and routing references describe adaptive triggering, the shared task budget, activity reporting, and related limitations.

The dashboard notes about adaptive consultation may mislead users about when automatic consultations fire. A budget-refusal message may also still use request-limit wording. Both are minor and do not block merge, but confirm the refusal wording before merging.

…t limit

A refused task-budget reservation told the worker the per-request consultation limit was reached. It now uses a distinct budget message; the limit wording stays for the request cap.
… evidence

GUI files follow the reviewed union resolution 97d21b763 (lidge-jun#7114's selector inside the adaptive editor rows); structure docs keep both the adaptive budget contract and the dashboard model-selection section.

Stale statement contradicts the new adaptive policy.

Line 223 still says "No semantic stagnation detection exists in PR1." The sentence sits next to the new adaptive section. The remaining claim stays accurate for semantic detection. The "PR1" label is now misleading because the PR adds evidence-based adaptive triggers. Reword the sentence to say that no semantic stagnation detection exists, and drop the "PR1" reference.

This file is a "present-tense contract" doc, so a stale PR label violates the structure rules.

As per coding guidelines: "A doc in this folder states the contract that holds right now, in the present tense, for one subsystem."

- Around line 105-118: Update the test around `mountEditor` to locate the
task-limit select by its accessible label, “Consultations per task,” rather than
the `#advisor-task-limit` ID selector. Keep the existing change and save
assertions unchanged.

…, #7124) (#7219)

Carried from #7134, #7124 (one commit per source PR, original authors preserved).

Remote exact-head validation (hosted GitHub Actions stalled; local tests not run by maintainer rule): union candidate codex/prr-integ-6 (368006f, tree 27fdc37) on mini (Windows) and lidge (Linux), typecheck + full suite, compared with base-dev 4ae4936 on each host.
