What

Adds POST /play: the robot streams a WAV to the speaker while an animation runs, then goes back to what it was doing.

curl -X POST http://tiny-engineer.local/play --data-binary @clip.wav
curl -X POST http://tiny-engineer.local/play/thinking --data-binary @hmm.wav
  • Streaming: the body is played as it arrives (about 1.5 KB buffered), paced by I2S. The reply comes when the clip ends. Anything but 16-bit mono PCM at SAMPLE_RATE gets 415 before any sound.
  • Animation: /play runs the new talking; /play/{name} runs talking, typing, reading, thinking or none. Animations with their own sound get 400. Afterwards the robot returns to the loop it was in, otherwise none.
  • talking: a continuous speaking fidget (head beats, neck drift, the odd hand gesture, its own eyes). Also selectable through /anim.
  • Path, not query: WebServer doesn't parse the query string for a streamed body.
  • CLI: tiny-engineer-claude-code play clip.wav [--name thinking].
  • Skill: skills/tiny-engineer-play (SKILL.md plus a curl script) lets Claude Code, Cursor and Antigravity agents speak through the robot.

Checks

  • Title is type(scope): summary
  • Breaking HTTP / pins / NVS / servo defaults / hook CLI called out as type!: plus a BREAKING CHANGE: footer (nothing breaking; new route and animation)
  • Firmware: pio run, pio run -e ota, pio run -e expression-demo and pio test -e native pass
  • Packages: npm test passes for all three packages; the skill's script is shellcheck-clean and tested against the robot
  • HTTP: HTML index + docs/api.md, README and docs/hardware/testing.md
  • Settings: no raw access_token in logs
  • CAD: N/A
  • Pins: N/A
  • Servo ranges not widened
  • Hardware tested: robot with speaker, flashed over OTA. Clips play in full and return to the previous loop; bad names get 400, wrong formats 415.
  • No .env, tokens, or Wi-Fi passwords in logs or screenshots

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Stream spoken WAV audio to the robot with POST /play; it animates while the clip plays. The default animation is talking, with other supported animations selectable.
    • Send WAV clips using the play command in the Claude Code CLI or shared skill script, and view the robot’s response when playback finishes.
    • The talking animation adds speaking-inspired movements and a happy kaomoji expression.
  • Documentation
    • Added API, setup, and usage guidance, including supported audio formats and playback behavior.

The request body is parsed as it arrives and written straight to I2S, so a
clip of any length plays with about 1.5 KB of buffering. I2S backpressure
paces the upload to real time; animation, eyes and LED keep updating between
speaker writes because loop() is blocked while the body streams.

Accepts 16-bit mono PCM at SAMPLE_RATE and answers 415 with the reason
otherwise. Auth and Wi-Fi checks run before any audio plays.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
The X-Anim request header carries a JSON array of steps run against the
audio playback clock:

["sleep", ms] advance the script clock
["preset", name] run an /anim animation without its sound
["move", servo, to, ms?] reach pose position -1..1 within ms
["eyes", mode] switch the eye mode

Moves do not block, so moves without a sleep between them run together.
The whole timeline is validated before any audio plays and rejected with
400 and the failing step. Presets that play their own audio, or sleep,
are not allowed. When the clip ends the previous continuous animation is
restored, otherwise the robot returns to idle.

WEBSERVER_MAX_LINE_LEN is raised to 8192 so the header fits about 250
steps.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
New timeline steps:

["look", x, y, ms?] move the gaze, -1..1 on each axis
["open", amount, ms?] lid opening, 0 closed to 1 normal
  ["blink"] blink once
["face", name] show an expression from the expressions library

look and open draw through the current eyes_style, so the kaomoji style
ignores them. A face replaces the eyes until the next look, open, eyes or
preset step; eyes and preset steps clear all scripted eye state.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
`tiny-engineer-claude-code play clip.wav --anim '[...]'` streams a WAV to
POST /play with the timeline in X-Anim. Unlike hook mode it reports back:
the robot's reply on stdout, the reason on stderr and exit code 1 on any
failure, so an agent can correct its timeline. --anim-file reads the
timeline from a file and is squashed onto one header line.

The tiny-engineer-play skill teaches Claude to make a clip with the
machine's text-to-speech (or silence), convert it to the robot's WAV
format, time a timeline against the speech, and send it with the play
command. scripts/play resolves its real path so the skill also works
when symlinked into ~/.claude/skills.

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01VYDrnWNM6nbcQ1nx8aua93
scripts/say.py is a uv script that runs Kokoro-82M text-to-speech
through a tin-can filter (band-pass with a short resonance, a 60 Hz ring
modulator and a bitcrushed flanger) and writes a 16-bit mono WAV at the
robot's sample rate. It prints each word's start in milliseconds so an
agent can place timeline steps on words. The tiny-engineer-play skill
makes clips with it and falls back to espeak-ng or macOS say without uv.

POST /play docs, the HTML index and the skill now state 22050 Hz, the
SAMPLE_RATE every build uses.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Estimated code review effort: 4 (Complex) | ~45 minutes

Change: Feature

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to e8f32

A configured playback token can be observed on the robot’s network. Resolve or explicitly accept that exposure before merging.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 25c5b

Long playback can block other robot controls. Authorization and audio-format checks are preserved, but existing unencrypted token transport remains a risk. Network isolation and deployed token settings are unknown.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: The new playback path lets a caller passing the optional-token policy occupy the sole HTTP handler for the duration of caller-selected audio, delaying health, settings, and animation-control requests. No playback-duration or byte budget is enforced in the handler, and its periodic robot updates do not service competing HTTP requests. Fixed buffers and the supplied clients’ ten-minute limits do not contain this request-time exposure. External server limits remain unverified.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated failure domain is one reachable robot: its speaker, selected animation, and competing HTTP controls. A tokenless configured device requires no API credential; a token-protected device requires the shared token for accepted playback. Fleet-wide reachability, shared credentials across devices, and Internet exposure are not established.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A caller with playback access can choose a long supported WAV and keep the shared HTTP control path busy while audio is paced to the speaker. Authentication restricts accepted callers when configured, but neither format validation nor bounded buffers limits total occupancy. External request limits may constrain the duration and remain unverified.
  • observed — The retained Security finding concerns bearer tokens sent over permitted plaintext HTTP. The base animation client already attached tokens to the same HTTP-capable URL, so the underlying condition predates this PR. The new playback client and skill inherit it; no broader credential destination or network exposure is demonstrated. A network observer able to read the traffic can obtain the shared API credential.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Caller-controlled animation names and WAV bytes cross into hardware effects through firmware-owned checks. Authorization precedes parser input and speaker effects; unsupported format fields fail before PCM delivery. The API uses one optional bearer credential, not separate user, tenant, or agent identities.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The parser buffers at most a fixed header, carry byte, and 256-sample batch, while the speaker writer uses a fixed conversion buffer. These controls limit per-session buffering, not elapsed execution time. Robot updates during playback maintain animation and activity processing but do not poll the HTTP server.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Enforce a firmware-owned byte or playback-time budget with deterministic cleanup, and preserve a way to interrupt playback without waiting behind its occupied HTTP request.
  • proposed — Protect bearer credentials with an authenticated encrypted transport or an explicitly trusted encrypted gateway, and bind credential forwarding to approved robot destinations. Treat this as hardening of an existing transport condition, not a newly introduced vulnerability.

…ed eyes

- Scripted look and open use anim::EasedMove and eyes::renderEye instead of
a private tween and lid maths; clearScript() resets them.
- A scripted face only flushes the OLED when its frame changes, saving
about two I2C flushes per 100 ms during playback.
- The play session reads the parser's sample count instead of keeping its
  own, and parses X-Anim inline.
- Timeline matches preset/eyes/face from one table and reserves its steps.
- TinyEngineerExpressions gains fromName(), the reverse of name().

…obot()

A move step switches to a new Scripted animation (no motion of its own,
so servos follow their move targets) and look/open switch to a Scripted
eye mode whose pose is the scripted gaze and lids. This replaces the
player's manual-servo branch and the per-frame pose hooks in the eye
controller; only the face override remains. GET /anim reports
`scripted` while it runs, and POST /anim does not accept it.

loop() and POST /play now share tickRobot(), so a streaming clip keeps
the sleep timer, Wi-Fi and provisioning OLED running. The clip counts as
activity, so an idle robot does not fall asleep mid-clip.

The skill ran say.py through a wrapper that reached outside the package,
which broke for an installed package. say.py now lives in the skill's
scripts folder and scripts/say.py is a symlink to it.

perform.py in the tiny-engineer-play skill takes a line with cues in front
of the words they belong to, for example

  {mood: proud}[nod]Build passed. {pause: 300}[happy wave]Ship it!

It checks the string first (unknown names and bad values are reported by
column with the closest valid name), speaks each segment with Kokoro,
aligns the cues to the spoken words, compiles them into an X-Anim
timeline and sends it with the play command. Gestures return to the
mood's resting pose; {define} names reusable cue groups. --check
validates without speaking and --dry-run prints the timeline.

The parser and compiler live in chordsheet.py with no dependencies, so
scripts/test_chordsheet.py runs in CI without the speech model. say.py
now loads Kokoro once so perform.py can speak several segments.

…file

eyeMode() is the single accessor for the current eye mode; the internal
duplicate is gone. tickRobot() lives in robot_tick.cpp and reads the clock
itself, so the HTTP layer no longer calls into main.cpp. Sleep resets its
idle clock only through noteActivity(), and the scripted eye state is set
only when the Scripted eye mode starts.

…ce options

chordsheet.py validates and emits named and numeric cues from two tables
instead of one branch per cue, wave and wave_left share one shape, and a
{mood} directive goes through the same check as a mood cue. say.py and
perform.py share their voice options. Parity tests fail CI when the
Python name lists drift from the firmware or the expression manifest.

Thanks for this! The streaming WAV path is what I want on the robot. Parsing the body as it arrives, pacing on I2S backpressure, rejecting a bad format before any sound, keeping tickRobot() alive during the upload, and restoring the previous typing / reading / thinking loop are the right shape for a clip of any length.

However, I would like to land a smaller /play first and leave custom choreography for a follow-up.

/play would stream the WAV and, for the length of the clip, run one named animation. Something like POST /play?name=talking (default talking), with the same body rules you have now: 16-bit mono PCM at the firmware SAMPLE_RATE, Content-Length required, 415 with the live rate when the format does not match. When the clip ends, come back to the continuous animation that was running, otherwise none. Presets that already play their own sound (welcome, ring, attention, error, abort, dead) stay rejected so two clips cannot overlap.

talking should be a normal animation, same family as typing / reading / thinking: a speaking fidget (head, maybe a hand, eyes, LED) with no baked WAV. POST /anim?name=talking can select it on its own. /play only decides which existing animation runs while the stream is open. GET /anim would report talking, not a session-only scripted state. Allowlist for name on /play can stay small: talking, typing, reading, thinking, none.

The reason to stop there: a timeline of move / look / open / face is a second animation runtime beside AnimationId. That has to work for motion in general, including performances with no audio, and it should not be tied to this route. X-Anim, the 8 KB line buffer, and scripted would become compatibility promises as soon as this merges. I want to think that model through on its own (named animations vs a real script, and how either one attaches to a clip). Happy to keep that on this branch, or as a follow-up after the simple route is in.

The Kokoro / chordsheet skill can stay out of this PR. Host TTS is the right place for a voice; it does not need to land with the route.

If you are up for trimming this PR down to streaming playback plus name plus the talking animation, I would review that next. The timeline work is not wasted... it is just a larger change than the first speech API should be.

A continuous speaking fidget with no sound of its own: the head faces the
user just above mid and nods quickly on random beats, the neck drifts,
and the right hand gestures now and then. Its eye mode looks mostly at
the user with short glances away. LED white like the other work loops;
the kaomoji style shows the happy face.

/play now plays the clip while `talking` runs, and /play/{name} picks
talking, typing, reading, thinking or none instead. The animation starts
with the first audio sample and the previous continuous animation comes
back when the clip ends.

The X-Anim timeline, the scripted animation and eye mode, the 8 KB
header limit, ArduinoJson and the Kokoro / chordsheet skill move to a
follow-up; the Claude Code play command takes --name instead of --anim.

WebServer's pathArg() asserts when the matched route has no path
arguments, so a plain POST /play rebooted the robot. Each route now tells
the handler whether it carries a name.

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01VYDrnWNM6nbcQ1nx8aua93
/play accepts none and any continuous animation, since none of those
play a sound of their own, instead of a hand-kept list. The name comes
from the request path, so the two routes share one handler. The WAV
parser only hands over full batches until the body ends, which cuts the
speaker writes per second by about 7%. Talking parks its gesture hand
on a transition, and postPlay drops a status field nothing reads.

Threw together a short audio clip in the same voice as the stock lines. Figured it might be a nicer thing to stream than a test tone, and it already sounds like the robot.

Totally optional, just there if you want something to try.

Trimmed it down. /play now streams the clip while talking runs; /play/{name} picks typing, reading, thinking or none instead. talking is a normal animation you can also pick through /anim. The timeline stuff is parked on a branch.

I went with /play/{name} instead of ?name=: the WebServer doesn't parse the query string for a streamed body.

Your clip is 44.1 kHz so it gets a 415; resampled to 22.05 kHz it plays fine.

Also, how did you make the stock voice clips? I like that voice a lot more than what I've got, would love to use the same for /play.

For me that is the main thing I want to change so that the skill uses the better voice. And of-course tuning the skill

skills/tiny-engineer-play is a plain Agent Skill (SKILL.md plus a curl

skill folders. It tells the agent to make a 22050 Hz clip with any
text-to-speech and send it to POST /play, optionally naming the
animation, and maps each /play error to its fix.

Chat

There are 3 ways to chat with CodeRabbit:

  • Review comments: Directly reply to a review comment made by CodeRabbit. Example:
    • I pushed a fix in commit <commit_id>, please review it.
    • Open a follow-up GitHub issue for this discussion.
  • Files and specific lines of code (under the "Files changed" tab): Tag @coderabbitai in a new review comment at the desired location with your query.
  • PR comments: Tag @coderabbitai in a new PR comment to ask questions about the PR branch. For the best results, please provide a very specific query, as very limited context is provided in this mode. Examples:
    • @coderabbitai gather interesting stats about this repository and render them as a table. Additionally, render a pie chart showing the language distribution in the codebase.
    • @coderabbitai read the files in the src/scheduler package and generate a class diagram using mermaid and a README in the markdown format.

CodeRabbit commands

These commands are invoked using PR/Issue comments.

  • @coderabbitai pause to pause the reviews on a PR.
  • @coderabbitai resume to resume the paused reviews.
  • @coderabbitai review to trigger an incremental review. This is useful when automatic reviews are disabled for the repository.
  • @coderabbitai full review to do a full review from scratch and review all the files again.
  • @coderabbitai review --preview-config to test the unmerged CodeRabbit configuration on a draft PR. The requester must have repository write access; preview results are non-authoritative.
  • @coderabbitai rate limit to show your current review rate limit status.
  • @coderabbitai summary to regenerate the summary of the PR.
  • @coderabbitai track in a human-authored review thread to track the original finding until CodeRabbit verifies it is fixed.
  • @coderabbitai fixed in a tracked review thread to verify the current code against the original finding.
  • @coderabbitai evaluate custom pre-merge check --instructions <custom-checks-instructions> --name <custom-checks-title> [--mode <error|warning>] to validate the custom pre-merge checks instructions. Defaults to error when --mode is omitted.
  • @coderabbitai ignore pre-merge checks to override pre-merge checks and get an approval on PR.
  • @coderabbitai run pre-merge checks to run pre-merge checks on the pull request.
  • @coderabbitai generate sequence diagram to generate a sequence diagram of the changes in this PR.

…celled switch

- The skill's play script only puts a bare lowercase animation name into
the URL, so a name like ../settings/reset cannot reach another route.
- The CLI's --name and --url no longer take the next flag as their value.
- Talking resumes moving when a pending switch is cancelled by asking for
talking again, instead of staying frozen.
- The skill install steps create each platform's skill folder first.

Also, how did you make the stock voice clips? I like that voice a lot more than what I've got, would love to use the same for /play.

@Mechazawa I made the stock clips with ElevenLabs using the "Eleven v4 | Victor - Tec Voice" voice.

Thanks a lot for this contribution! I tested it locally on the robot and it works really well. Streaming audio while the robot animates feels surprisingly natural, and I can already see this opening up some fun use cases. I’m now seriously considering adding a microphone to Tiny Engineer and turning it into a small voice interface for an AI assistant :)

One potentially fun improvement to the talking animation would be to somehow correlate the movement intensity with the audio amplitude, so louder parts of the speech produce slightly more expressive movement and quieter parts calm down. I’m not sure how practical that would be with the current streaming pipeline, but it could definitely be an interesting experiment and might make the animation feel even more natural.

Also, thanks for removing custom animations from this change. I think that area still needs a bit more thought. On one hand, being able to send or stream a custom animation sounds very powerful. On the other hand, I’m not sure I’d want to couple that directly to audio playback... those feel like two separate capabilities.

I’m also still thinking about how much real value custom animations would add on such a mechanically simple robot. There may only be so many meaningfully different movements we can create before the API and implementation complexity starts growing faster than the user value.

So I’m happy with keeping this PR focused on audio streaming + the built-in animation set for now.

Great work, and thanks again for contributing!
