Problem

Codex reviewed the last revision of hyperpolymath/standards#1308 after its merge and raised five findings on the K9 conformance lane. All five are real on main at 764b7b3:

  1. On a push event BASE_SHA was empty, so the changed-file list and the ledger-growth list stayed empty: a direct push to a ledgered failing contract stayed advisory, and a direct ledger addition was never checked for a Ratchet-exception.
  2. The renderer's esc escaped HTML, pipes and backticks only, so a contributor-named file such as [x](https://e.invalid/i).k9.ncl rendered as an image in the lane's own comment.
  3. A result whose findings array held a non-object (["bad"]) reached .severity and made jq exit, leaving no report or artifact.
  4. The validator was called with the path straight after --quiet, so a tracked file whose name starts with - was parsed as an option.
  5. *.k9.lock was in the corpus and the path filters although K9-CONTRACT-SPEC.adoc reserves .k9 and .k9.ncl only.

Change

  • .github/workflows/k9-conformance.yml: BASE_SHA is the PR base or, on a push, github.event.before (an all-zero before, a new ref, is "nothing to compare"); the checkout is fetch-depth: 0 on every event; the enumerate step's range is the merge base of base and head as before, which on a push is before itself. -- precedes the path in the validator call. *.k9.lock leaves git ls-files and both path filters.
  • scripts/lib/k9-grid.jq: esc turns \ [ ] ( ) * _ ! ~ into entities as well, so no Markdown can be written through an id or a reason; a findings array with a non-object element is an "Unexpected, duplicate or invalid result" row (orange), never a jq error.
  • 1-formats/k9/tools/CONFORMANCE-REPORTING.adoc: the reproduce recipe drops *.k9.lock.
  • scripts/tests/k9-grid-test.sh: six new assertions (non-object finding is orange and names its file; image, link, HTML and backslash injection in an id and a reason are escaped and still legible).

Verification

bash scripts/tests/k9-grid-test.sh                -> k9-grid-test: 67 passed, 0 failed
ruby -ryaml -e 'YAML.load_file(".github/workflows/k9-conformance.yml")'  -> ok
bash scripts/check-lock-sync.sh .github/workflows -> in sync (no uses: changed)
bash scripts/check-workflow-duplicate-keys.sh     -> 61 workflow file(s) clean

The self-run of the lane on this PR exercises the escaping on the real corpus (every .machine_readable/... id now carries _ entities, displayed as _).

Follow-up

rsr-template-repo#248 (WO-9 part 2) pins the lane at 764b7b3; once this merges it moves to this PR's merge commit before it lands, so the template's first consumer run carries these fixes.

Generated by Claude Code

…ings, end options

Codex's third round on #1308, applied after the merge:

- A push event now ratchets too: BASE_SHA falls back to the push's `before`
  (an all-zero before, a new ref, means nothing to compare), the checkout is
  full on every event, and the range is before..sha, so a direct push to a
  ledgered failing contract is blocking and a direct ledger addition needs
  its Ratchet-exception like any other.
- The renderer escapes every Markdown and HTML metacharacter in ids and
  reasons as an entity (`[ ] ( ) * _ ! ~ \` join `& < > | ` ` and newlines):
  a contributor-named file cannot write a link or an image into the lane's
  own comment.
- A findings array holding a non-object is an invalid record (orange), not
  a jq error that leaves no report.
- The validator is called with `--` before the path, so a tracked file whose
  name starts with `-` is validated, not parsed as an option.
- `*.k9.lock` leaves the corpus and the path filters: K9-CONTRACT-SPEC
  reserves `.k9` and `.k9.ncl` only.

k9-grid-test: 67 assertions (was 61).

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Conformance checks now run for .k9 and .k9.ncl files, excluding lock files, and compare changes against the appropriate base revision for both pull requests and pushes.
    • Reports identify malformed validator findings as invalid output and display contributor-provided file names and messages without allowing Markdown or HTML formatting to alter the report.
  • Documentation
    • Updated the reproducible conformance corpus listing to reflect the supported file types.

The K9 conformance workflow now compares changed files for pushes and pull requests, and excludes .k9.lock files. The grid now rejects malformed findings and escapes additional Markdown characters in generated reports.

Changes: K9 conformance

Layer / File(s) Summary
K9 file selection and workflow comparison
.github/workflows/k9-conformance.yml, 1-formats/k9/tools/CONFORMANCE-REPORTING.adoc
The workflow and reporting corpus exclude .k9.lock files. The workflow fetches full history and uses the pull request base or push before commit for change comparison. It also ends option parsing before passing each filename to the validator.
Grid result validation and escaping
scripts/lib/k9-grid.jq, scripts/tests/k9-grid-test.sh
The grid marks findings arrays with non-object elements as invalid validator output. It escapes additional Markdown-significant characters in generated reports. Tests cover both behaviours.

Two red checks on this PR are not this PR's; both are red on main at 764b7b3 for the same reason:

  • scan / Hypatia Neurosymbolic Analysis and governance / Validate Hypatia Baseline: Hypatia's lock parser rejects .github/workflows/actions.lock format v0.0.3 ({:unsupported_version, "v0.0.3"}) and reports it as two high findings. This PR does not touch the lock. The fix is fix(actions_lock): accept gh-actions-lock v0.0.3 lockfiles hypatia#932 (open, blocked on hypatia's own lock repair); nothing to port here.

Neither is a required check on main. The K9-SVC lane is green on this head, with the new escaping exercised on the real corpus. I cannot re-run checks from this session.

P2 Badge Diff force pushes from before, not their merge base

On a non-fast-forward push, github.event.before and HEAD_SHA can diverge, so their merge base is only the fork point—not the state the push replaced. For example, if the old tip removed a debt-ledger entry and the force-pushed tip restores the entry from their common ancestor, the diff and ledger comparison here are empty, allowing the restored exemption without a Ratchet-exception; reverted ledgered contracts can likewise remain advisory. Keep the merge-base comparison for pull requests, but compare BASE_SHA directly with HEAD_SHA for push events.

Agreed, fixed in the next commit on this branch: pull requests still diff from the merge base, but a push now diffs and reads the ledger from before itself, so after a force push a restored ledger entry counts as growth.

P2 Badge Escape mentions before posting contributor text

The new escaping still leaves @ untouched, so a contributor can add a failing path such as @organization/team.k9.ncl; its ID is copied into the bot-authored grid comment and parsed as a team mention. GitHub documents that mentioning a team in a comment subscribes and notifies its members (GitHub formatting documentation), allowing untrusted filenames or validator text to generate notifications under the lane account. Encode @ along with the other active characters.

Agreed, fixed in the next commit on this branch: @ is now escaped as @ with the other active characters, and a test renders an @org/team id and an @someone message and checks that neither is a live mention.

P2 Badge Harden the validator before accepting dash-leading paths

The added -- only gets a root-level name such as -dash.k9.ncl through the validator's own option parser; the validator then passes that bare name to utilities without their own option terminators. In particular, check_l0 runs cmp -s - "$f", which interprets -dash.k9.ncl as an option and records a false K9-E002 failure, while later head, sed, and dirname calls have the same problem. Thus a conforming tracked file in the exact scenario this change claims to support still fails the lane; either make all validator file consumers option-safe or normalize the filesystem path without changing the logical filename emitted in JSON.

Reproduced (cmp, sed and dirname all read -dash.k9.ncl as options, giving a false K9-E002). Fixed at the source in the next commit on this branch: validate_one hands every check a ./-prefixed path when the name starts with -, and the JSON and messages keep the logical name. A copy of a conforming contract under a dash-leading name now reaches the same verdict as an ordinary copy, and the validator self-test still passes.

…e, escape @

Codex's review of fce28b0:

- k9-validate.sh hands every check a `./`-prefixed path when the name
  starts with `-` (the JSON and messages keep the logical name), so cmp,
  head, sed, grep and dirname no longer read `-dash.k9.ncl` as an option
  and record a false K9-E002. With the workflow's `--`, a dash-leading
  tracked file is validated end to end. Self-test still passes.
- On a push the lane compares with `before` itself, not the merge base of
  before and sha: after a force push the fork point is not the state the
  push replaced, so a ledger entry the old tip removed and the new tip
  restores is growth and needs its Ratchet-exception.
- The grid escapes `@` as well, so a file named `@org/team.k9.ncl` or a
  validator message cannot mention anyone from the lane's account.

k9-grid-test: 68 assertions.

CodeRabbit asked for an end-to-end case on #1310. The self-test copies a
valid fixture to `-dash.k9.ncl` and asserts no L0 failure, a pass at L1
and the logical name in the JSON. Against the validator before 28ef760 it
fails with K9-E002, as the bug did.

hyperpolymath/standards#1310 carries the lane's review fixes: pushes
ratchet against `before`, the grid escapes Markdown and @-mentions, a
malformed finding is orange rather than a jq error, and the validator is
safe for dash-leading names. Every standards pin moves from 764b7b38 to its
merge commit; actions.lock relocked with relock-standards-pin,
complete-job-refs, close-lock and prune-stale, check-lock-sync in sync.

P2 Badge Flatten standalone carriage returns

When contributor-controlled text contains a bare \r, this final substitution leaves it intact because it only matches LF and CRLF. For example, an edited debt-ledger entry containing evil\r\r---\r\r# fake reaches the stale-exemption row unchanged; Markdown normalizes those carriage returns as line endings, allowing the bot-authored <details> content to be broken into a horizontal rule or fake heading. Replace standalone CR characters as well as LF so every rendered value remains on one Markdown line.

P2 Badge Preserve PR-body exemptions on the merge push

When ledger growth is authorized only by the supported Ratchet-exception in the PR body, the PR run clears the growth, but the post-merge push run now compares before to the merged SHA and detects it again. A push payload has no .pull_request.body, and squash/rebase or configured merge messages need not retain that body or the original trailer, so lines 248–251 leave the growth undeclared and turn main red immediately after an accepted merge. The push path needs to recover the associated PR exemption or otherwise avoid invalidating an exemption already accepted by the PR run.

…reusable lanes (#248)

## Summary

WO-9, part 2 of 2 (hyperpolymath/standards#1058; the work order is
`docs/reorg/2026-10-14-tidy/WORK-ORDERS-2026-10-19.adoc` in standards).
Stacked on
[#247](#247),
which brought every K9 record up to contract v1.0.0; this PR makes CI
check that with the canonical tools, at one standards commit, and
retires every second validator in this tree.

Before: `dogfood-gate.yml` validated the deed and the K9 files with the
`deed-ecosystem` and `k9-ecosystem` actions at `@main`, and
`deed-validate.yml` / `k9-validate.yml` did the same again. None of them
ran the canonical validator, so the 16 non-conforming files of #247 were
green here for months. The pre-push hooks were a third copy, grep-based.

After: the two reusable lanes of hyperpolymath/standards,
`deed-conformance.yml` and `k9-conformance.yml`, pinned with every other
standards call at `b3ce78e1` (the merge of
[hyperpolymath/standards#1310](hyperpolymath/standards#1310),
which follows the k9-conformance merge in
[hyperpolymath/standards#1308](hyperpolymath/standards#1308)),
`require-files: true` on both. One validator per family, pinned by the
caller (standards `docs/CONTRACTILE-DESCRIPTILE-VALIDATION.adoc`).

## Changes

- `.github/workflows/dogfood-gate.yml`: `deed-validate` and
`k9-validate` become calls to the reusables (same job ids, so
`dogfood-summary`'s `needs` list is untouched). New jobs: `k9-verdict`
posts the K9 grid to the pull request under `<!-- verdict-grid:k9
regenerated on every run -->` (one comment, updated in place; the
reusable asks for `pull-requests: read` only, so the caller posts), and
`badges` publishes `badge.json` to `badges/k9.json` on the
`governance-badges` branch on every push to `main`, through the contents
API so the commit is GitHub-signed and no checkout is written to.
- `.github/workflows/hypatia-scan.yml`: a `verdict` job that posts the
Hypatia grid the same way (artifact `verdict-grid`).
- `.github/workflows/k9-validate.yml`, `deed-validate.yml`: deleted.
- Every `uses: hyperpolymath/standards/…` moves from `75bd5994` to
`b3ce78e1`: `governance`, `hypatia-scan`, `mirror`, `rust-ci`,
`scorecard`, `secret-scanner` and the two new calls.
- `.github/workflows/actions.lock`: rewritten by the repair chain, not
by hand: `relock-standards-pin --to b3ce78e1`, `complete-job-refs`,
`close-lock`, `prune-stale`; `check-lock-sync` reports in sync. The
standards record now carries the actions the reusables use at
`b3ce78e1`, the same set as at `764b7b38`
(`dtolnay/rust-toolchain@683b588c`, `ossf/scorecard-action@fa7117db`
replace the older ones). The full chain with `gh actions-lock` was also
run in CI against this branch (echidna run 39336920170, since this
container cannot fetch the extension): the governance gate at `764b7b38`
returns 0 on the result and `check-lock-sync` is in sync, and the result
is this lock minus exactly three dependency records. Two are the
unreferenced `hyperpolymath/{deed,k9}-ecosystem@main` records, which `gh
actions-lock` drops; the third is the
`hyperpolymath/cicd-suite@0da816c0` leaf that the `cicd-suite@55556cf5`
record (`main-estate-audit.yml`) nests, which `close-lock` cannot
regenerate ("cannot resolve a symbolic tag for leaf SHA") and whose
absence is the dangling edge GitHub refuses runs on. This PR keeps the
closed lock; the two stale records go the next time the lock is
regenerated with a resolvable `cicd-suite` leaf, which is `cicd-suite`'s
pin to repair, not this PR's.
- `.github/hooks/validate-k9.sh`, `validate-deed.sh`: thin wrappers over
`1-formats/k9/tools/k9-validate.sh` (strict, L0–L2; L0–L1 when nickel is
absent) and `1-formats/deed/tools/deed_lint.js` from a standards
checkout (`STANDARDS_DIR`, default `../standards`); without one they
skip with a notice and the lanes remain the gate. The `.a2ml`-on-sight
error stays in the deed hook. `pre-push`'s header says so.
- `README.adoc`: the K9 badge (shields endpoint on `governance-badges`).
`.github/workflows/README.adoc`: a section on the lanes and why there is
no second validator.

Not in this PR: `coordination.k9.ncl` stays as #247 left it (it passes
as a component); the deed's `(contractiles …)` clause needs no change
(nothing renamed here). The pin was first `764b7b38` (the #1308 merge);
the first lane run on this PR at that pin was green (13/13). It now sits
at `b3ce78e1`, which adds #1310's fixes: push-event ratchet against
`before`, Markdown and @-mention escaping in the grid, malformed
findings as orange, and dash-leading names in the validator.

## RSR Quality Checklist

### Required

- [x] Tests pass: the two hook wrappers run green against
`/home/user/standards` (13 K9 files L0–L1 locally, 3 deeds), and both
skip cleanly without a checkout.
- [x] Code is formatted: YAML parses (both edited workflows),
`check-workflow-duplicate-keys.sh` 33 files clean.
- [x] Linter is clean: `check-lock-sync.sh` in sync; the governance lock
gate at `764b7b38` returns 0 in CI; no `${{ }}` inside `run:` (values go
through `env`).
- [x] No banned language patterns.
- [x] No `unsafe` blocks without `// SAFETY:` comments.
- [x] No banned functions.
- [x] SPDX license headers present on all new/modified source files.
- [x] No secrets, credentials, or `.env` files included: the posting
jobs use `github.token`; nothing is inherited.

### As Applicable

- [x] Documentation updated for user-facing changes:
`.github/workflows/README.adoc`, the README badge, the hook headers.
- [ ] Repo deed, roadmap, TOPOLOGY, CHANGELOG, dependencies, ABI/FFI:
not applicable.

## Testing

```
bash <standards>/scripts/relock-standards-pin.sh --to b3ce78e1… .github/workflows -> keyed to standards@b3ce78e1 (from 764b7b38, earlier from 75bd5994)
bash <standards>/scripts/complete-job-refs.sh; close-lock.sh; prune-stale.sh
bash <standards>/scripts/check-lock-sync.sh .github/workflows   -> in sync
bash <standards>/scripts/check-workflow-duplicate-keys.sh       -> 33 workflow file(s) clean
INPUT_PATH=. STANDARDS_DIR=<standards> bash .github/hooks/validate-k9.sh   -> 13 file(s), 0 failing
INPUT_PATH=. STANDARDS_DIR=<standards> bash .github/hooks/validate-deed.sh -> 3 file(s), 0 failing
grep -rn 'k9-ecosystem\|k9iser' .github/ -> only the unreferenced lock record named above
```

On this PR the proof is the lanes themselves: `deed-validate` and
`k9-validate` green, a 🟢 K9 grid comment from `k9-verdict`.
`governance.yml` and `hypatia-scan.yml` run on pull requests against
`main` only, so they first run here once #247 merges and this PR
retargets; the `badges` job first runs on the merge to `main`.
