docs: add estate-wide upstream dependency watch list - #1311
hyperpolymath wants to merge 2 commits into
Conversation
Records dependency advisories that no estate repository can clear alone because the fix must ship upstream first, with the release that unblocks each one so a re-check is a single crates.io lookup. Watching: - W1: zvariant, zbus_names, zvariant_derive unmaintained (RUSTSEC-2026-0370/0371/0372), via eframe -> accesskit -> atspi -> zbus 5. Unblocks when atspi moves to zbus 6. - W2: ttf-parser unmaintained (RUSTSEC-2026-0192), via winit -> sctk-adwaita -> ab_glyph. - W3: unsafe-libyaml unmaintained (RUSTSEC-2024-0449), via serde_yaml. Locally fixable by moving to serde-saphyr, listed because it recurs. Resolved: - R1: quick-xml 0.38 (RUSTSEC-2026-0194/0195), cleared by a lockfile bump of zbus_xml to 5.2.1 and wayland-scanner to 0.31.11. Kept as the worked example of checking the newest compatible release before planning an upstream fix. Review comments at @docs/UPSTREAM-DEPENDENCY-WATCH.adoc:
- Around line 53-55: Update the Cargo.lock scan loop to use a crate variable in
the grep pattern instead of hard-coding “zvariant”, allowing callers to search
for any crate while preserving the repository-name output.
- Line 147: Update the quick-xml version guidance in the upstream dependency
watch documentation to cover every version below 0.41.0, including 0.40, or
explicitly state that exact affected range while preserving the existing cargo
audit context.
- Around line 29-30: Update the procedure around the *Unblocking release* lookup
to verify every release gate in the dependency chain: atspi,
accesskit_atspi_common, accesskit_unix, accesskit_winit, egui-winit, and eframe.
Require each gate’s newest release dependency requirement to be checked before
considering the entry unblocked, rather than stopping after checking one crate.
- Around line 115-119: Update the W3 entry’s status and placement so a locally
remediable advisory is not marked as upstream-blocked; move it to the
local-remediation/resolved workflow, or explicitly define this exception in the
scope and status rules while preserving the existing replacement guidance.
- Line 22: Update the Debtfile reference in the documentation to use the
per-repository machine-readable path `.machine_readable/Debtfile.a2ml` instead
of the specification path `docs/DEBTFILE-SPEC.adoc`, while preserving the
surrounding explanation.

Check every release gate in a dependency chain.
This procedure checks one crate only. W1 requires releases through atspi, accesskit_atspi_common, accesskit_unix, accesskit_winit, egui-winit, and eframe. A new atspi release does not clear the entry by itself. Require the re-check to verify every gate listed under Unblocking release.

Parameterise the Cargo.lock scan.
The procedure claims to find repositories carrying any crate, but the command only searches for zvariant. It misses W2, W3, and R1 unless the reader edits the command manually. Use a crate variable in the lockfile pattern.

Do not list a locally fixable advisory as upstream-blocked.
W3 states Blocked on | Nothing upstream and gives a local replacement. The scope excludes advisories that a repository can fix itself and says those entries move to Resolved after the fix. Move W3 to a local-remediation section, or define this exception in the scope and status rules.

Update the W3 entry’s status and placement so a locally remediable advisory is
not marked as upstream-blocked; move it to the local-remediation/resolved
workflow, or explicitly define this exception in the scope and status rules
while preserving the existing replacement guidance.

Search the full pre-0.41.0 range.
The advisories mark >= 0.41.0 as patched. The current follow-up mentions only 0.38 and 0.39, so it omits 0.40. A repository on 0.40 can remain affected and escape this documented check. Change the condition to quick-xml below 0.41.0, or state the exact affected range. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Stop directing new debt into retired A2ML
When a maintainer follows this instruction for a tolerated advisory, the linked Debtfile specification requires adding an entry to .machine_readable/Debtfile.a2ml; that extends an A2ML file despite AGENTS.adoc:21-26 declaring A2ML retired and explicitly prohibiting such extensions. Point this guidance to the current deed/K9 replacement rather than instructing estate repositories to create new data in the retired Debtfile format.

Cover the full vulnerable quick-xml range
The estate follow-up singles out only versions 0.38 and 0.39, but both listed RustSec advisories mark every quick-xml version below 0.41.0 as affected. A repository pinned to 0.40—or an older version through another dependency chain—therefore falls outside the documented follow-up condition even though cargo audit reports the same vulnerabilities; describe the affected range as <0.41.0.

Restrict the zbus path to AccessKit-enabled GUIs
This overstates the affected population: standalone egui makes AccessKit optional and does not enable it by default, while eframe users can disable its default accesskit feature, so many Linux egui/eframe GUIs never resolve accesskit_unix or zbus at all. The published egui feature definition confirms that accesskit is opt-in; restrict this claim to builds that enable the platform AccessKit integration so the estate census does not classify unaffected GUIs as blocked.

Document the available local W2 workaround
When an affected GUI can omit Adwaita client-side decorations, this advisory is not blocked on an upstream release: sctk-adwaita/ab_glyph is pulled in only by winit's optional wayland-csd-adwaita feature, which winit includes through its default feature set, while eframe allows consumers to disable defaults and re-enable Wayland/X11 and their chosen renderer individually. The current entry tells maintainers only to wait and update later; record disabling winit/default while retaining the required explicit eframe features as a local remediation, or qualify the blocker as applying only when Adwaita CSD must be preserved.

Adds
docs/UPSTREAM-DEPENDENCY-WATCH.adoc. It lists dependency advisories that no estate repository can clear alone because the fix has to ship upstream first. Each entry names the release that unblocks it, so a re-check is one crates.io lookup rather than a fresh investigation.Entries
