refactor(storage): assert grouped locking and publication contracts - #446
Internal group-lock misuse and impossible private publication states returned recoverable errors, adding error plumbing to valid grouped operations.
Behavior before and after
Caller-contract violations use assertions. Successful group acquisition returns void, so readers and writers no longer construct or propagate a Status for it. Normal concurrent invalidation, structural fallback, IO errors, storage validation and resource exhaustion retain their runtime handling.
Implementation
Assert acquisition ordering, prohibited upgrades, duplicate pending acquisitions and enum validity. Assert protected Hash leaf versions, private plan/count consistency, fixed-width root encoding and prepared-batch dependency pins. Keep encoding outside assertions so Release still writes every header.
Design decisions and alternatives
IS/IX retain their standard multi-granularity meanings. Comments distinguish parent intention modes from the VLL scheduling intents registered by every mode. RefreshLockedGroup keeps runtime revalidation because select-then-delete operations can release read locks before acquiring mutation locks.
Documentation and comments
Updated the group-lock API and architecture contract, plus nearby publication invariants. No durable or wire format changes.
Test plan
Debug build passed.
77 focused unit tests passed, including death tests and lock compatibility, cancellation and wakeup cases.
27 grouped E2E tests passed, including Hash/Set native-replica TTL fallback, zset selection revalidation, prepared-write failure atomicity and cold recovery.
All 10 changed production translation units passed syntax checks using their configured Release compiler flags with NDEBUG, replacing object generation with -fsyntax-only and omitting PCH/LTO options.
Formatting hooks and git diff --check passed.
Exact build/test/hook commands (the E2E run used NO_PROXY=127.0.0.1,localhost and no_proxy=127.0.0.1,localhost):
The changed checks rely on internal caller contracts in Release. Runtime population/routing revalidation and data-integrity checks remain necessary; the concurrency and failure-injection regressions exercise that boundary.
Rollback plan
Revert this commit. No data migration is required.
Reviewer guide

Summary by CodeRabbit
Behavior Changes
Lock acquisition and grouped data consistency violations are now checked primarily in Debug builds rather than reported as runtime errors. Callers must release held locks before replanning or requesting stronger locks.
Lock acquisition no longer returns a status.
Documentation
Clarified grouped-lock ordering, lock-mode behavior, and consistency requirements for grouped data updates.
Tests
Updated coverage to verify the revised lock and consistency contracts, including Debug-build assertion cases.
Treat invalid group acquisition order, upgrades and overlapping acquisitions
as caller bugs. Return void after acquiring a group and remove Status handling
from every caller. Assert protected Hash leaf versions and private plan,
encoding and dependency-pin invariants while retaining normal concurrent
invalidation, structural fallback, storage validation and resource failures.
Keep standard IS/IX mode names and distinguish them from VLL scheduling
intents in the public lock-mode comments. Update the group lock contract and
cover misuse with Debug death tests.
Validation: Debug build; 77 focused unit tests; 27 grouped E2E tests; NDEBUG
syntax checks for all 10 changed production translation units; pre-commit.
Grouped lock acquisition now returns void, and Debug assertions enforce selected lock-contract violations. Selected grouped-storage publication, mutation, and write invariants also move from runtime error returns to assertions. Callers, tests, and documentation are updated to reflect these changes.
Awaiter::await_resume now returns void. Lock-order, upgrade, invalid-request, and overlapping-pending-acquisition violations are asserted in Debug. Callers and tests no longer check acquisition statuses.
