Context

Grouped ZSET reads repeat lock-plan routing and physical-record lookups even when the directory has not changed. Small ranges, boundary counts, and scan windows also allocate a heap lock-plan vector. These costs affect ordinary reads without lock contention.

Behavior before and after

Common small reads build their lock plan once in coroutine-local storage and reuse it when the immutable directory handle is unchanged. A reader that waits through a directory change still revalidates coverage and falls back to key S when its acquired groups no longer cover the request. The selected groups remain locked across payload I/O.

Implementation

  • Keep up to four planned group IDs inline; retain pre-admitted heap storage for larger plans and handle unmetered reservations correctly.
  • Skip the second routing pass and unchanged-view coverage pass for small plans; preserve sorted acquisition and deduplication.
  • Let RefreshLockedGroup optionally return its checked record, retaining all population, logical-version, and commit-status validation. Admission and loaders consume that borrowed record while keeping the returned handle alive.
  • Avoid duplicate ZSCAN directory lookup and manifest lookups for inline records.
  • Cover unchanged and changed routes while waiting for a group lock, plus inline and heap plans before memory-limiter initialization.

Design decisions and alternatives

Immutable handle identity proves that a previously selected route is still valid. Changed handles take the existing validation path. Borrowed record metadata lets immediate callers reuse the checked lookup while physical reads retain normal leases.

Documentation and comments

Updated nearby comments for inline plan ownership, directory identity, and the optional borrowed record. Existing architecture claims about locking, publication, allocation leases, and durable formats remain valid.

Test plan

Release and Debug builds passed. The selected Debug suites passed all 22 unit tests and 22 end-to-end tests, covering lock waits, changed routing, concurrent publication, recovery, external pages, and shared Hash/Set loading paths. Formatting and whitespace checks passed.

Local Release comparison against af6c1bed3 (including the merged ZRANK fix), using identical checkpoint copies to preserve layout and digest seed. Alternating baseline/candidate order across three rounds gives the following changes in median throughput:

Workload 1 key × 1,000,000 members 64 keys × 10,000 members
Top-100 (ZRANGE 0 99 WITHSCORES) +5.5% +0.2%
ZCOUNT, 1,000-score interval +4.1% -0.8%
ZCOUNT, -inf +inf +2.0% +1.7%
ZSCAN, COUNT 100 +0.9% +1.3%

The local harness uses unique integer scores, fixed request sequences, and data stored on disk. Non-default server settings: CPU 0, --max-memory 4G, --defrag-paused, --shutdown-checkpoint, and CONFIG SET tx-cleaner-cooldown-ms 0. The full 64-key series was rerun after a competing compilation was observed; its contaminated runs are excluded from this table.

The clearest gains are the million-member Top-100 and bounded ZCOUNT cases. ZSCAN and the multi-key changes are too small to establish a clear gain; million-member ZSCAN median p99 changed from 1.69 ms to 1.81 ms. These measurements do not establish recovery of the original pre-IS/IX performance. Benchmark scripts and raw measurements remain local.

Risk assessment

The main risks are accepting stale routing after a lock wait and extending a borrowed record beyond its owning handle. Changed-view coverage checks, retained handles, normal read leases, and the targeted tests cover these boundaries. Shared loaders also received Hash/Set and external-page regression coverage.

Rollback plan

Revert this commit; it introduces no durable-format or replication changes.

Reviewer guide

Start with TryConcurrentSortedSetPageRead in zset.cpp, then RefreshLockedGroup and its immediate callers in read.cpp and ordered_io.cpp. The new wait scenarios in storage_write_buffer_test.cpp exercise both sides of the directory-identity shortcut.

Follow-up work

Use the original workload to quantify the remaining regression. Half-full page packing and the resulting cross-page I/O remain separate costs from lock planning.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved reliability of sorted-set range reads that overlap with concurrent updates. Results now reflect the current data, including when a removal changes the range while a read is waiting.
    • Fixed grouped reads for inline and externally stored records, helping prevent missing or inconsistent results.

Explain Change →

Walkthrough

Grouped reads now reuse checked record entries from locked-group refreshes. Sorted-set reads adjust lock-plan storage, coverage validation, and scratch admission for inline and external records. Tests cover range reads during lock waits and unmetered range reads.

Changes

Grouped Read Paths

Layer / File(s) Summary
Reuse checked records in grouped loads
src/storage/engine/impl.h, src/storage/engine/grouped/read.cpp, src/storage/engine/grouped/ordered_io.cpp
RefreshLockedGroup can return the checked record entry. Hash and ordered-page loads reuse it. Ordered-page loads fetch extent metadata only for external records.
Update sorted-set lock plans and record admission
src/storage/engine/grouped/zset.cpp
Plans of up to four lock IDs use a local array. Coverage is revalidated when the current object handle differs from the original. Scratch admission includes extents only for external records.
Test waiting and unmetered range reads
tests/storage_write_buffer_test.cpp
Tests cover range reads waiting on unchanged and changed plans, including prefix removal, and add unmetered range queries.

A rabbit checks the records in the queue,
Then hops through pages, inline or external too.
Four locks fit in a pocket, neat and small,
Range reads wait, then answer one and all.
The lock table clears; the rabbit thumps with cheer.

Distinguish grouped waiting from whole-key fallback.

The range scenarios assert only that read is incomplete. The grouped attempt can return std::nullopt, release its ordered-group hold, and wait on the parent IX lock. After gate.Reset() and before parent.Reset(), add a cleanup-safe nonblocking exclusive probe for the same ordered group. The probe must be unavailable when the reader holds the group and available when the reader has fallen back. Do not probe while gate still owns the group, because that result does not identify the reader’s path.

Check the contents of both unmetered range results.

A range result with duplicated or reordered members can retain the expected count and pass this test. Compare each member and score with the seeded values for both range sizes.
