fix(chat): retain verified Copilot history on failed refreshes - #2068
Copilot transcript page failures were returned as successful empty scrollback responses, replacing messages already displayed in Chat. Gap-fill failures could also discard the held timeline.
Return 503 conversation_read_pending only when a fresh ownership check, current binding and transcript file generation still agree with the requested conversation. The response has Cache-Control: no-store and no ETag.
Echo the displayed history_id on newest refreshes without changing the existing ETag/cache key. A session switch or file replacement before the failed request must not retain the old conversation: a mismatching displayed history gets 409, clears the view/cache and reloads. A client without a displayed identity or bound cursor keeps the existing fail-closed fallback.
Let failed gap reads reach the existing refresh-error handler instead of treating them as unjoinable history. Retain the same mounted messages and opened tool details, and reuse the existing retry/backstop machinery.
Keep parser failures, revoked ownership and changed files out of the retryable path. Late responses after a read deadline cannot clear the cached answer either.
This reuses Ovis's existing failed-request retention, cursor rejection, error footer and refresh scheduler. It adds no UI setting, new cache or external/copied UI implementation.
This is independent of #2061 and is not stacked on it. It deliberately does not solve initial session discovery, missing native Herdr reports, or durable session bookmarks. No production deployment is included.
Focused Copilot/parser and conversation-fetch unit tests: 92 passed, including displayed identity, ETag reuse, retention on 503, rejected-history cache eviction and late-response deadline behavior.
Isolated Copilot HTTP contracts: 5 passed, 154 assertions. Covers newest/from/before read failures and recovery, legacy-client fallback, malformed records, revocation, session switches and file replacement both before and during a failed read. The new paginated-revocation regression failed against the pre-fix code (200 instead of 409).
Existing React/browser history QA passed with added same-node retention, expanded work/tool preservation, recovery, failed gap reads, and an unpaged 409 followed by an unavailable fresh retry. Chromium ran with its sandbox explicitly enabled; no live panes or real transcript contents were used.
Independent code review found no blocking issues after the displayed-history fix and the paginated ownership/file-revalidation fix.
Latest UNIT_TEST_WORKERS=2 bun run check fast: 7,721 passed, 0 failed, 28 skipped. Workflow syntax, generated files, typecheck and build also passed. Earlier runs had unrelated installer/browser/markdown timing failures; no assertions, timeouts or security controls were weakened.
GitHub fork workflow approval remains separate from local validation.
Reuse existing failed-request retention for verified Copilot page reads and gap-fill failures. Bind retention to the displayed history, reject changed identities, and keep late timed-out responses from evicting current cache entries.

Bug Fixes
Copilot Chat now keeps displayed messages and expanded work or tool details visible while retrying a failed history read, when the conversation is still the same.
A failed read between pages no longer discards messages already shown; the conversation can recover when history becomes available again.
If the conversation changes, the old messages are cleared to avoid showing history from the previous session.
Copilot conversation reads now distinguish retryable transcript failures from changed history. The server reports pending reads when the conversation remains verified. The client retains displayed messages for retryable failures and clears stale history after a 409.
The server adds ConversationReadPending and the history_id page cursor. After a transcript read failure, it rechecks the pane, binding, and history identity. Matching reads return a no-store 503; changed history returns a conflict for paged requests. Tests cover retries, ownership changes, session switches, and transcript changes.
Retain and refresh the displayed history src/lib/api.ts, src/components/ChatView.tsx, src/lib/conversationFetch.test.ts, scripts/chat-history-browser-qa.ts, changelog.d/copilot-refresh-retention.md
The client sends history_id during refresh, clears cached pages after a 409, and propagates other failures. Browser and polling tests check retention during pending reads, recovery, and clearing after a history mismatch.
devswha/ovis#1574 — The PR changes the Copilot conversation read path so eligible failed reads do not fall back to terminal scrollback.

Merge Risk: Low · previous review f282a
Older clients that send no displayed-history identity can get an error response instead of the usual scrollback fallback when the herdr service is briefly slow or failing during a transcript read failure. The case is rare and self-recovers on the next poll. The main behavior change looks sound, so the PR is mergeable with a small follow-up.

Explanation
The title "fix(chat): retain verified Copilot history on failed refreshes" matches the main change. The PR keeps displayed Copilot messages when a transcript-page or gap-fill read fails for a verified conversation, instead of replacing them with empty scrollback. The title is concise and specific, and it uses a conventional commit prefix.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the template. It has a Change section that describes the problem (empty scrollback replacing displayed messages, gap-fill failures discarding the timeline), the resulting behavior, and a link to issue #2066. It also has a Validation section that lists the focused unit tests, the isolated Copilot HTTP contract tests, the browser history QA, and the full check run. The template comment asks for contract-test coverage on HTTP changes, and the description reports 5 contract tests passing, so that requirement is met. The changelog entry in changelog.d/ is present in the diff, which matches the template's CONTRIBUTING.md reference.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue #2066 requires (1) retaining displayed messages and expanded tool details during retryable transcript-page and gap-read failures, only while the failure stays attributable to the same verified conversation; (2) reuse of the existing refresh machinery; and (3) no retention of a previous session after a session, ownership, or transcript-generation change, including a switch before the failed refresh.
Evidence at head f282ae5 (whole-PR diff, merge base 3b5d099):
Retryable path: server/conversation.ts wraps the page read in paneConversation. Only a transcript_missing ConversationUnavailable on a Copilot transcript with a bound prefix enters the retry path. It re-resolves the pane snapshot and binding, rereads peer claims, and compares path, binding, and history identity. A match on a paged request throws ConversationReadPending (503, no-store, no ETag per pane-routes/protocol changes). Unpaged requests with no history_id keep the original read error (scrollback fallback).
Session change before failure: a mismatching history_id, or a changed path, binding, or file identity on a paged request, throws HistoryChanged (409). ChatView (src/components/ChatView.tsx) now sends history_id on newest refreshes and resets state and cache on 409 for any newest or gap request. This satisfies the requirement to clear the old session.
Gap reads: ChatView's gap-read catch now rethrows every error except ApiError 409, so failed gap reads reach the existing refresh-error handler instead of returning null (unjoinable). This matches the issue's second path.
Race and peer checks: the fail-closed peer-process check (cached exited peer PID throws no_session_path) and the binding reread after peer claims close the session-switch and peer-replacement gaps. These run only inside the retry path, so they do not affect the normal read.
Tests reported in the PR and visible in the change summary cover retention on 503, recovery, 409 on session switch and file replacement, malformed records, revocation, and late-response deadlines. I did not execute these tests. I relied on their described content and the production code above.
No concrete unmet coding requirement was found. Parser-failure exclusion is supported by the catch condition, which only retries ConversationUnavailable with transcript_missing. The inner stream-read wrapper also rethrows ConversationUnavailable unchanged, so parser or unrelated ConversationUnavailable errors are not converted into the retry path by this change. I did not inspect the full parser code path, so this is based on the diff context only.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
Every changed area maps to #2066:
server/conversation.ts, server/conversation-shared.ts, server/pane-routes.ts: ConversationReadPending, history_id cursor, the retry path, and the 503/409 mapping that implement the retention contract.
server/conversation.ts (peer-process cache and exited-PID check): part of the ownership and binding revalidation that gates retention. It fails closed and does not add a new feature.
src/components/ChatView.tsx, src/lib/api.ts: history_id on newest refresh, gap-read error propagation, and 409 cache and view clearing. These implement the expected client behavior.
shared/protocol.ts: API contract documentation for 503 conversation_read_pending and 409 history_id mismatch.
changelog.d entry: describes the user-visible change.
Tests (server/copilot.test.ts, server/copilot.contract.test.ts, src/lib/conversationFetch.test.ts) and scripts/chat-history-browser-qa.ts: validate the requested behavior using synthetic fixtures.
The reviewed changes do not add initial session discovery, native Herdr report recovery, durable bookmarks, UI settings, a new cache, or external UI code. These are excluded by #2066. No unrelated production behavior was found. The reported unrelated timing failures in installer, browser, and markdown tests are test-environment results and not code changes in this diff.

…ng history
A failed page read revalidated the pane's binding before awaiting its peers' process checks, so a session switch during those checks passed revalidation and the 503 kept the previous session on screen. Read the pane's own binding again once the peer claims are in.
Thanks for this fix. The merge pass's review found one MEDIUM, which I fixed on the branch in 43535fd:
After a failed page read, the revalidation read the pane's own Copilot binding before awaiting the peer panes' process checks. A session switch during those checks passed revalidation, and the 503 kept the previous session's messages on screen. The pane's binding is now read again after the peer claims are in.
New unit test in server/copilot.test.ts ("does not retain the old history when the session switches while a failed read rechecks its peers"). It fails on 591ef1a and passes on 43535fd.
Verified on 43535fd: bun run check fast passes (7722 unit tests, typecheck, build), and server/copilot.contract.test.ts passes 5/5 in the CI image (herdr 0.9.3). Both reviewers re-review this head before the merge.
The recheck reused the peer claims it had gathered before its last own-process call, so a peer that claimed the session during that call was missed and the 503 kept history whose ownership was already disputed. Keep the peers' process info from the first pass and read their lifecycle claims again right after the pane's own binding, with no herdr call between those reads and the comparison.
…as exited
The recheck reads peers' claims from the process info it cached in its first pass. A peer whose Copilot exited during the pane's last process call may have been replaced by one that claims this session, and the cache never names it: such a recheck now rejects the read instead of retaining history.
Two more fixes on the branch, from the merge pass's review rounds 2 and 3:
cad5804: the recheck reused the peer claims it had gathered before its last own-process call, so a peer claiming the session during that call was missed. Peers' process info is now cached from the first pass, and their lifecycle claims are read again right after this pane's own binding, with no herdr call in between.
f282ae5: a peer whose Copilot exited during that call could have been replaced by a process the cache never names. Such a recheck now fails closed: paged requests get 409, and unpaged requests keep the scrollback fallback.
Each has a regression test in server/copilot.test.ts that fails on the previous head and passes here. bun run check fast on f282ae5 had one failure in an untouched file, server/codex-processes.test.ts; that file passed 3 of 3 runs on its own, on this head and on main alike. A final review round of the new code runs before the merge.

…allback before any recheck
A request that names no displayed history and no cursor can never be retained, yet it still waited on the herdr recheck, and a herdr error there replaced its scrollback fallback with an error. Such a request now takes the fallback before the recheck. Suggested by CodeRabbit.
Note: CodeRabbit is an incremental review system and does not re-review already reviewed commits. This command is applicable only when automatic reviews are paused.
… recheck
The legacy-fallback assertion left the read-failure flag set, so the next request switched sessions during its first resolution instead of the recheck, and the case no longer caught a recheck that reads the binding once.
Thanks for this fix. Before merging, the merge pass reviewed it strictly (external PR) with omo-native-code-reviewer and Codex, reproduced every finding, and fixed them on this branch:
43535fd: after a failed page read, the recheck now reads the pane's own Copilot binding after the peer checks, so a session switch during them is not retained.
cad5804: peers' lifecycle claims are read again right after that binding, with no herdr call in between, so a peer claiming the session during the last call is caught.
f282ae5: a recheck whose cached peer Copilot has exited fails closed.
5d40580 (from CodeRabbit's review): an unpaged refresh that names no history keeps its scrollback fallback before any recheck.
b76515c (test-only): keeps the session-switch case switching inside the recheck.
Each fix has a regression test in server/copilot.test.ts that fails on the previous head. Both reviewers pass 5d40580. b76515c changes only that test, and it was checked against the mutation it guards. The required checks are green. CodeRabbit reviewed f282ae5; its one thread is resolved. The remaining LOW notes go to a follow-up issue.
## Release 0.4.20
The release PR, prepared by step 1 of
[docs/development.md#releasing](https://github.com/devswha/ovis/blob/main/docs/development.md#releasing),
initially on main `bd676637a16471e8744d62c7311026ddb43a39eb` (#2335,
xterm 6), then merged with final-scope main
`ef482f2e66b3344658fb548fa1110744a92929c9` (#2338) and test-only
follow-up main `269e9ce19558b8d197959250075da56b25b9668f` (#2345):
- **Version:** `version` is 0.4.20 in `package.json` and
`herdr-plugin.toml`.
- **Changelog:** `bun scripts/changelog-fold.ts 0.4.20` initially folded
122 fragments into the 2026-10-29 section of `CHANGELOG.md`, linked
their PRs, and deleted the fragments. After merging main, the modified
`letta-native-chat.md` from #2338 was folded by hand with its current
wording and PR link. No other late fragment landed; `changelog.d` holds
only `README.md`. Four additional entries for external PRs without their
own fragments bring the section to 157 entries.
- Added 22 `by @login` credits across all 19 outside-contributor PRs in
the release range. Preserved the existing credit to @Yoonwoo-Ha for
#1634. See the complete ancestry-based audit below.
- **Release summaries:** en, ko, ja and zh each have 5 new, 5 improved
and 5 fixed lines, matching 0.4.19's shape. They include the xterm 6
improvement: terminal frames no longer mix old and new output. Every
English line is at most 80 characters.
- **Remote bundle:** `REMOTE_BUNDLE_VERSION` rises from 38 to 39 because
the bundle inputs changed since remote-v38.
- **Telemetry:** the guard confirms no Worker deploy or deployed
fingerprint update is needed.
- **iOS upload note:** CURRENT_PROJECT_VERSION raised to 3 for App and
OvisNotifications (last uploaded: 2, source: `docs/native-app.md:99`,
commit `54fdadc1c65da5d50a6afef411e3ed8f23b6c255`). Both targets inherit
project-level Debug and Release settings, and every
`CURRENT_PROJECT_VERSION` entry is 3. `app/store/ios.md` now records the
prepared build. This is the last documented upload, not a live App Store
Connect query; check for later uploads before uploading. The marketing
version remains 1.0.
- The changelog explicitly distinguishes delivery: removing WebKit's
form bar (#2109) requires the new iOS app build, while Korean
composition (#2307) comes with the PC update and needs no new iOS build.
The Korean-input summary says the same in all four languages, with no
change to list counts.
## Validation
- Final `dori heavy release-check -- bun run check fast`: passed, exit
0; workflow syntax, generated types/themes, typecheck, build and unit
suite (8,591 pass, 0 fail, 34 platform skips in 549 files). This is the
merged tree containing #2338, #2345, the contributor corrections and iOS
build 3.
- `bun test scripts/changelog-fold.test.ts
server/release-notes.test.ts`: 33 pass, 0 fail.
- `bun scripts/release-notes.ts 0.4.20`: passed, with all patch-note
lists and the full changelog.
- `bun scripts/release-guards.ts` and CI mode with `--base
ef482f2`: passed on the final merged
tree: "Release 0.4.20: remote bundle, telemetry Worker and release
metadata are in order."
- `bun scripts/release-guards.ts --release 0.4.20`: expected exit 1 only
because "remote-v39 is not published." The merge pass publishes it after
merging.
## Merge pass
**Do not merge before the owner's OK.**
- [ ] Merge only after the owner's OK and required checks pass.
- [ ] After merging, push `remote-v39` on the merged commit and wait for
the **Remote PC bundles** workflow to publish the manifest and all
archives.
- [ ] Then run **Release** on `main` with version `0.4.20`, without `v`.
The Release workflow creates the app tag; do not push it by hand.
- [ ] From this PR's merge until the Release run is done, merge nothing
touching `server/`, `shared/`, `bun.lock` or `patches/`.
- [ ] A changelog fragment merged after this PR must be moved into
0.4.20 by hand.
This lane stops at the open PR. No tag, workflow dispatch, merge or
telemetry deploy was performed.
**Completed release follow-up:** merged main `ef482f2e` including #2338
(`fix/letta-no-live-box`), folded its revised fragment into 0.4.20, and
retained the contributor-credit commit `184dc120` and iOS-build commit
`0ffa3d45`. The Letta summary already describes conversation support
without promising a live-terminal box, so it needs no change.
Merged test-only #2345 from main `269e9ce1`: the two usage browser
checks now wait for the earlier shared account-order save and start the
sign-in check from a cleared order. No product behavior or late fragment
was added; `changelog.d` still contains only `README.md`. The iOS
delivery clarification and resolved review thread are retained.
## Complete external-contributor audit

Change
Fixes #2066.
Copilot transcript page failures were returned as successful empty scrollback responses, replacing messages already displayed in Chat. Gap-fill failures could also discard the held timeline.
503 conversation_read_pendingonly when a fresh ownership check, current binding and transcript file generation still agree with the requested conversation. The response hasCache-Control: no-storeand no ETag.history_idon newest refreshes without changing the existing ETag/cache key. A session switch or file replacement before the failed request must not retain the old conversation: a mismatching displayed history gets 409, clears the view/cache and reloads. A client without a displayed identity or bound cursor keeps the existing fail-closed fallback.
