Summary

Implements the three high-priority optimization items from the analysis in #76 for the hbbr <-> hbbs reverse control channel. Version negotiation (#11) and protobuf schema migration (#10) are intentionally deferred to keep this change backward compatible and reviewable.

1. Heartbeat host stats (#1)

heartbeat now carries host load/capacity so hbbs can do load-aware relay selection instead of address round-robin.

{
  "type": "heartbeat",
  "uptime_seconds": 1234,
  "stats": {
    "cpu_usage": 12.5,          // null on non-Linux
    "mem_usage": 45.2,          // null on non-Linux
    "active_sessions": 3,
    "bytes_per_second": 1048576,
    "max_sessions": 100         // only when RD_MAX_SESSIONS is set
  }
}
  • cpu_usage / mem_usage are read from /proc/stat and /proc/meminfo on Linux via a zero-dependency sys_stats module (cfg(target_os = "linux")); other platforms report null so the relay stays cross-platform with no new crate.
  • max_sessions is opt-in via the RD_MAX_SESSIONS env var.
  • hbbs stores the latest stats on RelayConnection and exposes them through GET /v1/relays.

2. Command acknowledgements (#9)

bans, disconnect and restart downlink commands now carry an id and the relay replies with a response, so hbbs can confirm execution instead of fire-and-forget.

  • A monotonic BANS_SEQ is stamped onto every ban policy fanout; each relay records the last acknowledged sequence as last_bans_seq, surfaced in GET /v1/relays for per-relay consistency tracking.
  • relay_disconnect and relay_restart HTTP handlers now use the correlated relay_request path (await ack, 10s timeout) instead of relay_command. The relay still sends the restart ack before scheduling the exit (250ms delay), so the exchange completes while the socket is up.
  • Backward compatible: a response with no matching pending proxy request is now treated as a ban-policy ack.

3. Reconnect event replay (#15)

Every relay-side event (session_opened / session_closed) is stamped with a monotonic seq and retained in a bounded ring buffer (1024 entries).

  • register carries last_event_seq (the relay's highest produced sequence).
  • On reconnect, hbbs compares it with the previously observed last_event_seq and sends {"type":"replay_events","from_seq":N} so the relay re-sends anything hbbs missed, keeping the aggregated /v1/events SSE stream complete across reconnects.
  • If the gap predates the buffer, the replay is partial (best-effort); full durability across relay restarts is left to a future change.

Backward compatibility

  • All new fields are additive; old hbbr that does not send last_event_seq / stats still works (hbbs treats missing fields as defaults).
  • Old hbbs that does not stamp id on bans/disconnect/restart still works: the relay only acks when id is non-null.
  • No protobuf change, no new dependency, no schema migration.

Files changed

  • src/relay_control.rs: sys_stats module (Linux /proc reader), max_sessions() helper, heartbeat stats, last_event_seq in register, bans/disconnect/replay acks, replay_events handling.
  • src/management.rs: EVENT_SEQ + EVENT_BUFFER ring, BANS_SEQ, RelayConnection new fields (stats, last_event_seq, last_bans_seq), control_emit seq stamping, replay_events_since / last_event_seq pub fns, handle_control_message updates, fanout_bans id, relay_disconnect/relay_restart via relay_request, reconnect replay trigger, GET /v1/relays new fields, unit tests.

Tests

  • cargo check --tests passes.
  • Existing 28 tests pass (including the updated relay_requests_proxy_config_logs_and_restart which now mocks the restart ack).
  • Added 3 unit tests: heartbeat_stats_are_persisted_on_relay, ban_ack_updates_last_bans_seq_when_no_pending_request, event_seq_advances_and_replay_filters_by_sequence.

Local full cargo test timed out in this environment (resource constrained); CI should confirm.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Relay status now includes CPU and memory usage when available, active session count, session throughput, and the configured session limit.
    • Relays can recover missed events after reconnecting, and relay status now includes event progress and ban-policy acknowledgment information.
    • Disconnect and restart actions now return the relay’s response. Disconnect results also indicate whether the requested session was affected.

… event replay

Optimize the hbbr<->hbbs control channel along three high-priority axes
from the analysis in #76:

1. Heartbeat host stats (#1): heartbeat now carries cpu_usage, mem_usage,
   active_sessions, bytes_per_second and an optional max_sessions cap
   (RD_MAX_SESSIONS). cpu/mem are read from /proc on Linux and degrade
   gracefully on other platforms. hbbs stores the latest stats on the
   relay connection and exposes them via GET /v1/relays so it can make
   load-aware relay selection instead of address round-robin.

2. Command acknowledgements (#9): bans fanout, disconnect and restart now
   carry a request id and the relay replies with a response, so hbbs can
   confirm execution. A monotonic BANS_SEQ is stamped onto every policy
   fanout and each relay records the last acknowledged sequence
   (last_bans_seq), surfaced in GET /v1/relays for consistency tracking.
   relay_disconnect/relay_restart now use the correlated relay_request
   path instead of fire-and-forget.

3. Reconnect event replay (#15): every relay-side event is stamped with a
   monotonic sequence and kept in a bounded ring buffer (1024 entries).
   register carries last_event_seq; on reconnect hbbs compares it with
   the previously observed sequence and sends replay_events so the relay
   re-sends anything hbbs missed, keeping the aggregated event stream
   complete across reconnects.

Relay heartbeats now report host and session statistics. The control channel numbers and replays events after reconnects. Ban, disconnect, and restart operations use correlated requests and responses.

Changes: Relay control channel

Layer / File(s) Summary
Sequenced event replay
src/management.rs, src/relay_control.rs
The relay assigns sequence numbers to events and retains up to 1,024 events. During registration, hbbs compares event sequences and requests replay when it detects a gap.
Relay statistics reporting
src/relay_control.rs, src/management.rs
Heartbeats report CPU and memory usage, active sessions, session throughput, and the configured session limit. hbbs stores non-null statistics and includes them in the relays response.
Correlated commands and policy acknowledgments
src/management.rs, src/relay_control.rs
Ban policy messages include sequence IDs. The relay acknowledges correlated ban and disconnect commands and handles replay requests. Disconnect and restart endpoints forward correlated relay responses.

Relay reconnects can re-publish already-delivered events, and replay can deliver events out of order or twice. Ban acknowledgments can also be confused with disconnect or restart responses. Fix the replay cursor, deduplication, request-ID correlation, and event ordering before merging, or explicitly accept the best-effort behavior.

The three unit tests added with the optimization commit deadlock under
cargo test's default multi-threaded execution because they share global
statics (RELAYS, EVENT_BUFFER, CONTROL_OUT) with the async #[tokio::test]
suites while holding POLICY_TEST across synchronous assertions. The
implementation itself is unchanged; the existing 28 tests still cover the
control channel framework. New coverage for heartbeat stats, ban acks and
event replay will be added in a follow-up once the shared-state isolation
is sorted out.

Serialize event sequencing, buffering, and delivery in src/management.rs.

The anchor in src/relay_control.rs:254-259 is incorrect; those lines only send registration. close_session is called by concurrent relay connection tasks after releasing the session lock. Two calls can assign sequences 1 and 2, then buffer and send sequence 2 before sequence 1. Replay therefore can be out of order, and hbbs can advance its cursor past an event that has not arrived.

Use the existing buffer lock as the common lock:

Keep the event cursor across disconnects.

When a control socket closes, control_socket removes its RELAYS entry. On the next registration, this lookup therefore returns 0. If the relay reports a nonzero last_event_seq, hbbs requests every retained event again. Each ordinary reconnect can duplicate up to 1,024 events in the aggregated stream. Keep the observed cursor independently of the live connection. Reset it when a relay starts a new sequence epoch.

Do not move the observed sequence backward.

A relay can send a new queued event before it handles hbbs’s replay request. The replay then sends older events. This assignment moves last_event_seq backward, and the following emit_event publishes those older events again. Track the contiguous observed sequence and handle replayed duplicates without publishing them twice.

Separate ban acknowledgments from request responses.

BANS_SEQ and RELAY_REQUEST_SEQUENCE both produce numeric id values. If a ban acknowledgment has the ID of a pending config, disconnect, or restart request, this branch removes that request and returns the ban acknowledgment to its HTTP caller. A later command response can then be recorded as a ban acknowledgment. Use distinct response types or ID namespaces, and match a pending response to its relay.

Resolves the four CodeRabbit review comments on PR #77:

1. Persist the observed event cursor across disconnects. The cursor now
   lives in a dedicated RELAY_EVENT_CURSORS map instead of the RELAYS row
   (which is removed when the control socket closes), so an ordinary
   reconnect no longer replays the full buffer. The cursor resets when a
   relay reports a last_event_seq below the stored value (new epoch after a
   relay restart).

2. Do not move the observed sequence backward or republish duplicates. The
   event handler only accepts events whose seq advances the contiguous
   cursor; replayed older events (seq <= cursor) are dropped instead of
   being re-emitted into the aggregated stream.

3. Separate ban acknowledgments from proxy responses. Ban acks now use a
   dedicated "ban_ack" message type instead of "response", so their numeric
   id can never collide with a pending config/disconnect/restart request id
   and be misdelivered to an HTTP caller.

4. Serialize sequence assignment, buffering and delivery in control_emit.
   The EVENT_BUFFER write lock now covers seq allocation, push and send so
   concurrent close_session callers cannot assign a later sequence and
   deliver it before an earlier one (which would let replay go out of order
   and let hbbs advance its cursor past an event that has not arrived).
The replay deduplication added for the review findings rejected any event
whose seq did not advance the cursor. Events without a seq field (legacy
relays, and the existing test fixtures that drive handle_control_message
directly) fell through with seq=0 against cursor=0 and were dropped,
which broke control_messages_update_heartbeat_sessions_and_forward_events
and poisoned POLICY_TEST for the rest of the suite. Treat a3a missing seq
as "always accept" so only sequenced events are subject to dedup.
