Summary

Implements the protobuf migration (#10) from the Issue #76 analysis.7 the hbbr<->hbbs reverse control channel. Backward compatibility is intentionally dropped: the control channel is protobuf-only, per the issue scope. The HTTP management API still speaks JSON.

Schema

New libs/hbb_common/protos/relay_control.proto (in the hbb_common submodule, pushed to hashbk/hbb_common feat/relay-control-proto):

  • A single ControlMessage envelope with a oneof payload replaces the JSON type discriminator — no redundant string field per frame.
  • Flattened messages: SessionEvent carries kind/uuid/session directly instead of nesting under an event object. HostStats, SessionInfo, Bans, RelayIdentity are reusable message types.
  • ControlResponse (named to avoid colliding with rendezvous.RelayResponse) carries the proxied HTTP status + bytes body so HTTP semantics pass through without a schema per endpoint.
  • BanAck is a dedicated message type (no id collision with proxy requests).
  • GetSessions added (was missing in the first iteration).

Wire changes

  • management.rs: control_socket sends/receives Message::Binary; handle_control_message matches on the oneof payload; fanout_bans, relay_request and the relay proxy HTTP handlers build ControlMessage; control_emit stamps seq + buffers ControlMessage.
  • relay_control.rs: register/heartbeat/sessions/event/response/ban_ack build ControlMessage; handle_command parses binary; a local encode helper serializes.
  • Submodule pointer + .gitmodules updated to hashbk/hbb_common so the generated code is fetchable.

Field cleanup (per issue: remove redundant/duplicate fields)

  • Dropped the per-message type string (oneof discriminates).
  • Dropped the nested event object (SessionEvent is flat).
  • stats only carries values that exist (proto3 defaults omit zero cpu/mem; max_sessions=0 means no limit).
  • RelayResponse renamed ControlResponse to avoid the cross-protocol name clash.

Tests

  • cargo check --tests passes.
  • cargo test --lib -- --test-threads=1: 28 passed.
  • Existing tests updated to build/parse protobuf frames (control_events, control_messages_update_heartbeat, replace_bans_fans_out, relay_requests_proxy mock).

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Improvements
    • Relay session status is refreshed after each event, helping keep displayed information up to date.
    • Relay health reporting handles unavailable CPU or memory readings and unset session limits consistently.
    • Management requests and responses continue to support relay registration, session updates, and administrative actions.

Replace the ad-hoc JSON-over-WebSocket framing on the hbbr<->hbbs reverse
control channel with binary protobuf frames defined by the new
relay_control.proto (in the hbb_common submodule).

Schema (libs/hbb_common/protos/relay_control.proto):
- A single ControlMessage envelope with a oneof payload replaces= replaces the
former JSON "type" discriminator, so every frame is self-describing without
  a redundant string field.
- Messages are flattened: SessionEvent carries kind/uuid/session directly
instead of nesting under an "event" object; HostStats, SessionInfo, Bans
and RelayIdentity are reusable message types.
- ControlResponse (named to avoid colliding with rendezvous.RelayResponse)
carries the proxied HTTP status and a bytes body so existing HTTP
semantics pass through without a schema for every endpoint.
- Ban acknowledgements use a dedicated BanAck message (no id collision with
  proxy requests).

Wire changes:
- management.rs: control_socket sends/receives Message::Binary;
handle_control_message matches on the oneof payload; fanout_bans,
relay_request and the relay proxy HTTP handlers build ControlMessage
values; control_emit stamps seq + buffers ControlMessage.
- relay_control.rs: register/heartbeat/sessions/event/response/ban_ack
build ControlMessage; handle_command parses binary; a local encode
  helper serializes.
- The hbb_common submodule now points at hashbk/hbb_common
feat/relay-control-proto so the generated code is available; .gitmodules
  is updated accordingly.

No: Backward compatibility is intentionally dropped (no JSON fallback), per
the issue scope. The HTTP management API still speaks JSON; only the
hbbr<->hbbs control channel is protobuf now.

Walkthrough

The relay control channel now uses protobuf ControlMessage payloads in binary WebSocket frames instead of JSON text frames. Management and relay code encode and handle typed messages for registration, heartbeats, events, commands, acknowledgements, and responses.

Changes: Relay control channel

Layer / File(s) Summary
Protobuf messages and event contracts
.gitmodules, libs/hbb_common, src/management.rs
The hbb_common submodule URL and reference change. Management converts control data and session events to protobuf messages, and its event queue and replay interface carry those messages.
Management relay control flow
src/management.rs
Management registers relays, exchanges binary protobuf frames, handles typed control messages and correlated responses, and sends typed ban, disconnect, config, log, and restart commands. Tests now check protobuf frames and payloads.
Relay control flow
src/relay_control.rs
The relay sends protobuf registration, heartbeats, snapshots, and events, and handles typed commands and responses. Snapshots are sent after each event. Tests now check binary protobuf frames.

Merge Risk: Low · up to 6acc7

An unrecognized session event kind from a relay may be misreported as a session-opened event. This is a narrow edge case, mostly relevant during mixed-version rollouts. It is worth a small fix before or shortly after merge.

Repoint the submodule at databk/hbb_common (kept in sync with
rustdesk/hbb_common) instead of the personal hashbk fork, and fast-forward
the submodule to the rebased feat/relay-control-proto branch so CI can
fetch the generated protobuf code from an org-owned remote.
…frames

The mock server in normalized_http_url_registers_over_websocket still parsed
the registration and heartbeat as JSON text; the control channel now sends
binary protobuf, so parse the frames as ControlMessage and assert on the
oneof payload instead of the former "type" field.

Minor · Data Integrity & Integration · Quick win

Do not treat unknown or unset event kinds as SESSION_OPENED.

This match covers only two arms, so proto::session_event::Kind has exactly two variants and no UNSPECIFIED = 0 value. enum_value_or_default() maps any unknown numeric value to the zero variant. It does the same for an unset kind field.

Suppose a newer relay sends a new kind during a rolling upgrade, such as SESSION_UPDATED. An older hbbs then reports a session_opened event that never happened, with the wrong data. If the zero variant is SESSION_OPENED, that branch also resets relay.last_heartbeat incorrectly.

Fix: use enum_value() and drop values this hbbs does not recognize. In the schema, also add KIND_UNSPECIFIED = 0, as the proto3 convention recommends.

Review comment at @src/management.rs around lines 1319 - 1322:
Update the session-event kind handling around kind_str to use enum_value()
instead of enum_value_or_default(), and ignore unrecognized or unset kinds so
they are not reported as SESSION_OPENED or SESSION_CLOSED. Add KIND_UNSPECIFIED
= 0 to the session-event kind schema enum.

Source: Learnings

enum_value_or_default() mapped any unrecognized or unset SessionEvent kind
to the zero variant (SESSION_OPENED), so a newer relay advertising a future
kind during a rolling upgrade would make an older hbbs emit a spurious
session_opened and reset last_heartbeat. Switch to enum_value() and ignore
unknown kinds with a warning. The schema now has KIND_UNSPECIFIED = 0 per
proto3 convention, so SESSION_OPENED/SESSION_CLOSED are no longer the
default.
