Required amendments
A1. The bootstrap path changed outside the approved scope, and it lost a check (lines 419–424).
- What changed. The old tail after both writes was
observed = read_anchor(api), which reads the ref and refuses unless it points at the new commit. At this head the PATCH branch always returns or raises inside its loop, so the trailingobserved = read_anchor_at(api, commit)(421) is reached only afterPOST /git/refs.read_anchor_atre-verifies the objects the helper just created and never reads the ref. - What that breaks. After a bootstrap POST, a ref that reads 404, has been deleted or points at another head is reported as success. The workflow then sets
phase=preparedand deploys (current-site.yml 233–251) without the anchor ever being confirmed on the branch. The message at 423, "receipt branch changed during write", can no longer fire. - Out of scope. RTW's boundary says: "Safest minimal scope is existing-branch PATCH only; bootstrap/404 handling needs separate explicit design and tests."
- Not test-driven. Restoring the old line passes all 30 tests in both modes (reproduced independently).
- Live impact is low. The receipt branch already exists, so this path is not reached today. It is still a silent weakening outside the approved boundary.
- Fix: restore
observed = read_anchor(api)for the POST branch (or move the tail into it), and add a test that a post-POST 404 or foreign head is refused.
A2. RTW's required negative controls are only partly tested, including the run-ID check this PR split out. RTW requires that a "future candidate, different run/repo/ref/source/workflow, or altered digest/inventory → rejected before API". Only the future-attempt and source-commit cases are tested.
- The run-ID check. This PR replaced the old whole-dict run equality with two predicates, and only the attempt half is tested. Deleting line 139 (
candidate["run"]["id"] != context["run_id"]) leaves 30/30 green in both modes (reproduced independently). A different run at the same source does exist: the amendment cites scheduled run 40092816617. - Also untested:
- a context repository or ref mismatch (137);
- a source ref or workflow change (87);
- observe's check that the candidate equals the prepared receipt (458–459), which guards against altered digests or inventory. Each guard can be removed with the suite still green.
- Fix: add before-API tests (
api.calls == []) for a different candidate run ID, a context repository or ref mismatch and a source workflow change, plus one observe test where an altered digest or snapshot inventory against the prepared receipt is refused before any write.
Recommended, not blocking
- Validate
read_attemptsbefore the PATCH. Today line 405 runs after line 404's write, so a bad value turns a successful advance into a reported failure. Only default callers exist. - Complete the attempt-2 sequence the workflow runs:

Observations, no change requested
- Earlier-attempt artifacts of an older run. Later-attempt admission also lets a failed-jobs rerun of an older run republish that run's earlier-attempt artifact over a newer publication, subject to the snapshot-subset check (437–438).
- This is not new in kind: before this PR, a full rerun of the same old run could already republish its source.
- The unchanged workflow passes the latest build attempt's artifact ID, so same-run attempt rollback is not reachable through it.
- I note it for the integrator and the owner.
- Misleading message on a post-PATCH failed read. A 404 or 5xx on the post-PATCH ref read raises the "bootstrap requires explicit initial 404" message (line 300, reached from 408). The text is misleading, but it fails closed.
- A loose test regex. The regex in the corrupted-target test,
(integrity|receipt|anchor), is broad enough to match other failures.
Method
Four independent finder lenses (design boundary, control flow, custody, mutation) ran on private exact-head copies. Two skeptics tried to refute each of A1 and A2 and could not. I reproduced the decisive mutants myself on a fresh export:
- the baseline passes 30/30;
- deleting the run-ID check passes 30/30;
- restoring the old bootstrap readback passes 30/30;
all in both normal and -O mode.
Scope of this review
This is source review only. It is not acceptance and not integration. After the amendments, a fresh exact-head delta review is needed. Synchronising with current main (08c98c8f, #584 changing only public-shop.yml), candidate-bound checks and a guarded merge belong to a separate integrator.
