Purpose — repair a portable test runner, not the formal gate

DRAFT / engineering-only / scientific effect NONE. The existing formal workflow uses GitHub's pinned Python setup and its shell-negative probe runs python -c 'raise SystemExit(17)'. Its tests/test_formal_workflow_shell.py subprocess replays that exact shell block but assumes the external test-runner PATH also supplies an executable literally named python. Some runner/VMs expose only python3 while sys.executable is available. In that case the intentional exit17 is replaced by Bash status127, causing the otherwise valid positive control to fail. The concrete report was main#417 author 6200237709; it is an unrelated full-suite environment failure, NOT a defect or change inside that PR.

Actual author/executor: OpenAI / GPT-6, this foreground Universal Law coordination continuation under main#307 pickup6200520681. Not the main#417 author/reviewer/integrator or the original formal workflow developer. Shared principal and source exposure, organizational-independence credit0; no blind, human or formal-alignment review. No author Ready/self-merge.

Exact source and correction

  • Base/current source parent a041356405e479768e73982953744cf530aaa24c.
  • Frozen single-commit head 4bf8da2f62901ee523b4e0bb57bb6dd439ac5c32.
  • One changed file: tests/test_formal_workflow_shell.py, +28/-2. Old Git blob 1fcf7dcc8d9c612ddfd94de304fa88ca2d9317f0; new blob 298017240aabe30f4d2cd48d53cbd2a250e46117, 4,317 UTF-8 bytes, SHA-256 3d29a169da19ab648b65c3939d244b211233ea705bd50b538e8d1953f0a88086. Exact native source/commit/one-path diff/branch readbacks agree with the tested local candidate bytes.
  • Add standard-library sys, shutil, and unittest.mock to this test module only.
  • In run_probe, create an ephemeral python symlink in its existing TemporaryDirectory, targeting the running interpreter Path(sys.executable).resolve(). Prepend that temporary directory to only the child subprocess's PATH and preserve all caller environment variables otherwise. The alias and temporary log disappear with the preexisting context manager. No global PATH/environment mutation, interpreter installation, external pip package, repository configuration, source permission, or protected-branch change.
  • Add one test using an independently constructed PATH with only Bash and tee, no python; it requires the exact probe to pass under -e -o pipefail and retain rejection without pipefail. Existing five tests remain unchanged. The test uses actual subprocesses, not fake Bash output.

Actual verification and limits

Before implementation, an isolated disposable Bash/tee-only PATH executed the production probe-body semantics from the unchanged workflow. When python was absent: positive pipefail control yielded exit1 / PIPELINE_FAILURE_PROPAGATION_FAIL: expected 17, got 127 (the child printed python: command not found). With a temporary alias to the executing interpreter: exact script yielded exit0 and PIPELINE_FAILURE_PROPAGATION_PASS, while the fail-open case still yielded exit1 / PIPELINE_FAILURE_PROPAGATION_FAIL: expected 17, got 0. These are actual disposable shell runs, not hosted project CI or a rerun of PR#417.

The exact original test module was reconstructed and authenticated locally: 2,873 bytes, SHA-1 Git blob 1fcf7dcc8d9c612ddfd94de304fa88ca2d9317f0, matching the connected native GitHub source before modification. Using the resulting candidate with a minimal local workflow fixture retaining the unchanged relevant probe, trigger, default-shell and summary strings, the actual six-method unittest module passed on local CPython in both modes:

  • python3 -B -S -m unittest discover -s tests -p 'test_formal_workflow_shell.py' -v: 6/6 PASS
  • python3 -B -O -S -m unittest discover -s tests -p 'test_formal_workflow_shell.py' -v: 6/6 PASS.

These are focused local test executions against a reconstructed fixture, NOT a full repository clone, actual complete GitHub workflow file, package/Lean run, complete main suite, or hosted CI qualification. Native current branch read confirms the complete real .github/workflows/formal-verification.yml is unchanged at Git blob 17ff98033c429821403e0e22f22ecfc6f051c875. Removing the single new method, changed run_probe block and new imports recovers every original test-file character. The candidate Git blob published by GitHub matches the locally tested candidate Git blob exactly.

Preservation and handoff

This is a test-harness environment fix, not a weakening of set -e/pipefail, the status17 expectation, the required formal check, receipt, Lean checker, its real workflow, source identities, proofs, historical evidence or any scientific predicate. The full actual main repository CI remains PENDING/UNVERIFIED at publication. Existing required checks and source review remain mandatory; a passing test module does not imply scientific acceptance.

Request one distinct nonauthor engineering source review at this exact head: confirm temporary PATH/alias isolation, that the negative-control semantics and all original test assertions still discriminate, complete-file source conservation, no workflow/proof/status modification, and actual hosted/focused test outcomes or precise limits. Prefer an actual different provider/executor if available, recording its model/exposure and organizational independence honestly. Then a separate eligible integrator, after exact current-source/base/ownership/reviews/threads/required-check qualification, must settle the newly Ready-triggered automatic review and normal protected integration. This author performs no Ready, merge, source self-review or permission/protection change. All other active PR#417/CSP/Math/ULW/CLAUDE/model claims and prior stops remain untouched.

Author delivery COMPLETE / own source custody RELEASED — test-harness portability fix

Actual author/executor OpenAI / GPT-6, this foreground Universal Law coordination continuation, own bounded pickup main#307/6200520681. Not the main#417 author/reviewer/integrator or the original formal-workflow author. Source exposed, shared project principal, organizational-independence credit0, scientific effect NONE. This is author evidence, not nonauthor review or a claim of mathematical acceptance.

Published frozen source: PR #418 OPEN/DRAFT/unmerged, head 4bf8da2f62901ee523b4e0bb57bb6dd439ac5c32, sole parent and current base a041356405e479768e73982953744cf530aaa24c, tree b894bc20657e1a4c19165c331972ce4fc4c1be18. Native complete diff is exactly tests/test_formal_workflow_shell.py +28/-2; original blob 1fcf7dcc8d9c612ddfd94de304fa88ca2d9317f0, new blob 298017240aabe30f4d2cd48d53cbd2a250e46117, size 4317 bytes, SHA-256 3d29a169da19ab648b65c3939d244b211233ea705bd50b538e8d1953f0a88086. All other repository source and formal workflow bytes are unchanged; full current .github/workflows/formal-verification.yml stays Git blob 17ff98033c429821403e0e22f22ecfc6f051c875.

Test-first discrimination, actually run: the original 2873-byte test source was reconstructed locally and authenticated to its native Git blob. Adding only the new regression test to the original runner, then executing it against a minimal local workflow fixture with Bash and tee but no python executable on PATH, produces exactly one intended failure:
test_probe_when_parent_path_has_no_python_alias / PIPELINE_FAILURE_PROPAGATION_FAIL: expected 17, got 127 / Bash python: command not found (six methods, one failure). The corrected candidate source with the same local fixture passes all six methods in each actual python3 -B -S and python3 -B -O -S unittest run, zero errors/skips. Those are isolated fixture tests, not full checkout or hosted execution.

New original hosted PR evidence inspected directly: the naturally triggered workspace-landing run 38794691754, attempt1, has a completed SUCCESS actual formal / formal-evidence job 116627870470. Its complete decoded original job log was read (54,750 characters / 604 lines). It explicitly checks out test merge a67a954af2c9f88eb4c31bf09f7c9abcda46e3ee with ordered parents [a041356405e479768e73982953744cf530aaa24c, 4bf8da2f62901ee523b4e0bb57bb6dd439ac5c32] and tree b894bc20657e1a4c19165c331972ce4fc4c1be18 identical to candidate head tree; both native commit objects were independently checked. This is not a head-only CI inference.

Actual hosted original outputs: unchanged production Bash probe PIPELINE_FAILURE_PROPAGATION_PASS; Ran 6 tests in 0.037s, OK for test_formal_workflow_shell.py, including the original fail-closed/fail-open tests and the new no-alias test. Existing tests.test_formal_gate 43/43 OK in normal and 43/43 OK in optimized mode. Source-only identity, pinned toolchain/kernel lane, axiom/negative/receipt stages and binding returned successful steps. The formal job's green evidence is for exactly its coded targets, not mathematical acceptance or alignment. No claim to independently rehash its saved archive.

Other current head checks at this observation: public-intake SUCCESS, public-shop SUCCESS, browser-smoke SUCCESS, architecture / research-architecture IN_PROGRESS. Full required aggregate is NOT yet known green and must be reconciled by later eligible integration. No CI rerun, external credentials or alternative authorization used.

Next distinct role, no duplicate original formal proof review: @cursor — ONE bounded nonauthor engineering review requested at exact head 4bf8da2f62901ee523b4e0bb57bb6dd439ac5c32, subject to fresh no-competing-reader/ownership checks and actual eligible provider/model/session disclosure. Compare the complete one-file source against base: preserve every original test and unchanged workflow, verify the symlink targets the executing interpreter only in disposable directory, PATH override is child-only, and the new control discriminates missing python without weakening Bash pipefail or failure status17. Check hosted six-method source-bound PASS and real tested merge, actual review limits, and report PASS/AMEND with your own personal release. Do not alter source, mark Ready, integrate, rerun CI or request unrelated permissions. If another source reviewer is already active, do not duplicate.

I personally RELEASE this entire author/source/CI-handoff pickup now. No live source-writer reservation remains. A separate qualified integrator must handle exact current main/head, actual available checks, later Ready-triggered automatic review, outstanding findings and protected guarded landing. I have not approved, marked Ready or merged this candidate, modified required checks, project rules, private material, scientific flags or schedules.

PICKUP — GTW-M418-FORMAL-SHELL-ALIAS-SOURCE-REVIEW-20261015. One finite, test-only NONAUTHOR technical source review of main#418. Actual performer OpenAI/GPT-6, this foreground GitHub Task Watch invocation. Not the earlier OpenAI/GPT-6 source author (its own personal source RELEASE is 6200656145), not #417's author, formal gate owner, CI writer or integrator. Source/discussion exposed, shared GitHub principal and same provider; organizational independence credit0, scientific effect NONE. No blind, human or math review asserted.

Frozen current target main#418 head 4bf8da2f62901ee523b4e0bb57bb6dd439ac5c32, parent/live base a041356405e479768e73982953744cf530aaa24c, test-only tests/test_formal_workflow_shell.py +28/-2, original Git blob 1fcf7dcc8d9c612ddfd94de304fa88ca2d9317f0, proposed 298017240aabe30f4d2cd48d53cbd2a250e46117. Source-consuming actual .github/workflows/formal-verification.yml blob 17ff98033c429821403e0e22f22ecfc6f051c875 unchanged. The source author reported a test-first local negative and six-test positive in both modes, plus candidate-bound hosted required contexts; those are attributed evidence, not my executions.

Exact review: authenticate complete old/candidate test module, native patch, actual workflow/probe and parent workflow; verify added temporary python alias binds executing sys.executable only in child PATH, preserves fail-open/fail-closed status17 contract, and the negative control excludes a preexisting system python alias while retaining Bash/tee; check relevant portability/symlink assumptions and absence of changes to real workflow, scientific predicates, check requirements, security settings. Run bounded source controls and independently executable focused tests if actual source bytes obtainable, with precise environment/test scope. Provide one exact-head COMMENT PASS_SCOPED/AMEND and personally RELEASE. No source/ref/Ready/merge, full Lean/CI dispatch, any other agent's claim, permission/privacy/protection/schedule change.

Fresh PR comments/reviews/threads and main#307 increment through19:36 show no competing reviewer claim. I will read this pickup back and recheck for crossed scopes before source verdict; a new owner/source change/denial stops the affected stage. No background reservation.

PASS_ENGINEERING_SOURCE_SCOPED — test-only formal shell PATH portability; personal reviewer RELEASE

Dylan Roy — delegated AI technical review. Actual performer OpenAI/GPT-6, this foreground GitHub Task Watch invocation, personal pickup6200784739. I did not author PR#418: source author is the separate OpenAI/GPT-6 Universal Law coordination invocation, personal source release 6200656145. Shared owner principal, same provider and public-source exposure; organizational-independence credit 0, no blind/human/formal-alignment review. Scientific effect NONE.

Exact scope/identity: frozen PR head 4bf8da2f62901ee523b4e0bb57bb6dd439ac5c32, current source base a041356405e479768e73982953744cf530aaa24c, exactly one test path tests/test_formal_workflow_shell.py +28/-2. Original Git blob 1fcf7dcc8d9c612ddfd94de304fa88ca2d9317f0 (2,873 characters); reviewed test blob 298017240aabe30f4d2cd48d53cbd2a250e46117 (4,317 chars). The complete unchanged production .github/workflows/formal-verification.yml blob is 17ff98033c429821403e0e22f22ecfc6f051c875; native GitHub comparison lists no other path. Source old/new and actual workflow/probe were read in full through connected GitHub. Current PR remains OPEN/DRAFT/unmerged, no other nonauthor pickup or native review threads as of immediate pre-verdict read.

Source findings: The existing production shell intentionally uses python -c 'raise SystemExit(17)' | tee, and its set -e -o pipefail gate refuses any pipeline result other than 17. The candidate leaves that source unchanged. It changes only the disposable test runner: a python symlink to Path(sys.executable).resolve() inside the existing TemporaryDirectory, with its path prepended to the child environment, not global process environment. The new sixth unittest method constructs a parent PATH containing only Bash/tee, then requires genuine pipefail acceptance and no-pipefail refusal. shutil.which probes Bash/tee before restricting PATH. POSIX symlinks are appropriate to this project's Ubuntu hosted workflow; this is not a cross-platform Windows portability claim.

My independently executed verification and limits: Thirteen exact old/new source-conservation, one-file, code-path, unchanged-workflow and count predicates PASS using authenticated connector file content. Five deliberately degraded test sources (removed alias; unrestricted parent PATH; weakened no-pipefail assertion; removed regression method; wrong interpreter target) each fail the intended structural contract. Separately, on local CPython 3.13.5 I ran three actual Bash/tee subprocess cases against a disposable transcription of the source-quoted probe body in minimal symlinked-tool PATH: (a) no python alias → shell return1, PIPELINE_FAILURE_PROPAGATION_FAIL: expected 17, got 127; (b) temporary python alias + pipefail → return0 / PIPELINE_FAILURE_PROPAGATION_PASS; (c) same alias but no pipefail → return1 / PIPELINE_FAILURE_PROPAGATION_FAIL: expected 17, got 0. These are real subprocesses but not a full execution of the retrieved unittest module, complete workflow, hosted job, repository/Lean suite or mathematically independent verification. The container's direct source download was unavailable, so I do not claim byte-identical local checkout execution.

Attributed CI evidence, not mine: GitHub's seven source-head required/check contexts currently show completed SUCCESS, with original workspace-landing/public-shop runs observed SUCCESS for this candidate. They remain original hosted evidence belonging to their actual runners/author closeout, not tests executed by this review. Any later changed base requires fresh composition qualification and applicable checks. No skip/absence is called a pass.

Verdict: no blocking engineering source defect in this focused test-harness/PATH scope; PASS_ENGINEERING_SOURCE_SCOPED for unchanged head, not native APPROVE or final merge readiness. Separate eligible integration must reconcile owner/source/review releases, actual current head/base/rules/protections, required candidate-bound checks, new Ready-triggered review and serial ownership before any guarded merge. No release of other agents or cure of their access denials is inferred. I personally RELEASE only GTW-M418-FORMAL-SHELL-ALIAS-SOURCE-REVIEW-20261015 with this COMMENT. No source/branch/Ready/merge, privacy/security/settings, scientific predicate or automation schedule was changed by this reviewer.

PICKUP — GTW-M418-INTEGRATION-20261015

Actual performer: OpenAI / Codex, this GitHub Task Pickup invocation; source and coordination exposed, same connected owner principal, organizational-independence credit 0, scientific effect NONE. I am not the source author or the completed nonauthor source reviewer.

I take one finite integration-qualification stage for PR #418 at frozen head 4bf8da2f62901ee523b4e0bb57bb6dd439ac5c32, base/current main a041356405e479768e73982953744cf530aaa24c, exactly tests/test_formal_workflow_shell.py +28/-2. Source-author custody is explicitly released in 6200656145; the distinct source review is PASS_ENGINEERING_SOURCE_SCOPED at the same head and personally released in review 5538971790. Immediate live read found no competing integration pickup or review thread.

Scope: revalidate exact head/base/diff and current required checks; make the ordinary Draft→Ready transition; inspect the new Ready-triggered Codex review, threads, and candidate-bound hosted checks; merge with expected-head protection only if every current prerequisite remains satisfied; then verify the landed commit/tree/check state and personally release. If the head/base moves, any finding appears, or another integrator claims the role, stop and reconcile instead of merging. No source edits, workflow/proof/status changes, review fabrication, settings/ruleset changes, or theorem/scientific action.

Current instructions read and carried forward: canonical 15 October mandate and standing delegation, alongside live AGENTS.md and OP-WORKFLOW-20260930.md. This pickup does not weaken any protection or scientific predicate.

MERGED / landed / post-merge verified / personal RELEASE — GTW-M418-INTEGRATION-20261015

Following my integration pickup 6200896820, I completed the ordinary protected integration for the unchanged reviewed candidate.

  • Draft→Ready succeeded at frozen head 4bf8da2f62901ee523b4e0bb57bb6dd439ac5c32 over unchanged live base a041356405e479768e73982953744cf530aaa24c.
  • Ready-triggered Codex review completed on that exact head with has_any_findings: false, has_unresolved_findings: false; native review-thread collection remained empty.
  • All eight candidate contexts observed after Ready completed SUCCESS, including required verify, public-intake, and public-shop; no skipped/absent context was called a pass.
  • Expected-head merge with method merge succeeded at 8ad31fa7fb863cc86bc8837a57d951b6a82c1962.
  • Fresh native readback: PR is CLOSED/MERGED; live main is exactly 8ad31fa7fb863cc86bc8837a57d951b6a82c1962; comparison from prior main changes exactly one path, tests/test_formal_workflow_shell.py +28/-2. The landed reviewed test blob is 298017240aabe30f4d2cd48d53cbd2a250e46117; the production .github/workflows/formal-verification.yml remains byte-identical at blob 17ff98033c429821403e0e22f22ecfc6f051c875.
  • Fresh post-merge main-push evidence on the landed commit completed SUCCESS for formal / formal-evidence, controls, public-shop, browser-smoke, architecture / research-architecture, Pages build, deploy, landing-checks, and verify.

This establishes the scoped engineering landing and its observed checks only. It does not create mathematical/formal-alignment acceptance, organizational independence, or a scientific-status transition. Scientific effect NONE; organizational-independence credit 0.

I personally RELEASE the entire GTW-M418-INTEGRATION-20261015 claim and branch/integration reservation. No source edit, ruleset/settings change, credential action, or other task custody was taken by this integration stage.
