Summary

Support Better Auth >=1.7.7 <1.8.0. Strip modelKey from Convex function arguments and add native atomic consumeOne and incrementOne operations. Update schema generation, plugin constraints, React client types, Generic OAuth callbacks, examples, and Local Install exports.

Fix two adapter issues exposed by upgrade testing:

  • Continue filtered pagination from continueCursor so previously returned rows are not repeated.
  • Match unset optional fields in static eq null/ne null filters so OAuth refresh-token rotation succeeds.

Fix OAuth provider discovery for eager and lazy route registration. Document plugin configuration and database-backed signing keys, keeping the provider issuer and Convex JWT issuer distinct. Includes the upstream test-helper change from #447.

Migration

Remove the obsolete issuer backfill, helpers, and indexes: 1.7.7 uses (providerId, accountId) for account identity. Retain optional account.issuer for existing early-1.7 data. Keep guidance for account audits, Microsoft account IDs, account selectors, and Generic OAuth changes.

Document the Local Install migration from oidcProvider to @better-auth/oauth-provider: export clients, clear legacy provider records, re-register clients, and issue new secrets/tokens. Include temporary schema and cleanup instructions that preserve existing users, sessions, signing keys, and custom fields/indexes. Apps that only sign in through external providers can skip this conversion.

Clarify Generic OAuth identity mapping and PKCE, Expo asynchronous cookies, and two-factor response handling. Link existing standalone OAuth provider users to upstream client migrations, with temporary Convex schema guidance, and document signed consent-query verification. Note that SCIM requires native interactive transactions and remains unsupported; adding SCIM support is outside this PR.

Testing

  • Local CI equivalent: 255 tests passed, 31 existing skips; build, root/example typechecks, and lint passed with 3 existing warnings. Migration docs build passed.
  • Existing Playwright/Convex harness: 8 checks passed—4 existing browser tests plus 4 new real HTTP provider checks across eager and lazy registration. Cover discovery, signed ID tokens, refresh rotation, reuse rejection, and token-family revocation. Each regression fails when its corresponding fix is removed.
  • Private hosted upgrade from populated 1.6.17 data: 208 users and 209 accounts, plus sessions and signing keys, preserved before behavioral checks. Existing passwords, sessions, and Convex JWTs worked after upgrading. Pagination and atomic operations passed.
  • Hosted provider conversion and independent local migration checks passed, including existing Local Install apps, TOTP, rate limits, and custom fields/indexes. Separate browser checks covered Generic OAuth callbacks, cross-domain sessions, account linking, and 2FA.
  • Populated standalone OAuth Provider 1.6.17 → 1.7.7 upgrade passed on two independent local Convex apps. Verified temporary-schema migration, original client secrets, sessions, consent, access/refresh tokens, public/native clients, machine scopes, and signed tokens. Direct final-schema deployment correctly rejected unmigrated client records.

External IdP logins and hosted custom-base-path/non-RS256 provider flows were not tested. Static JWKS is unsupported by the documented provider configuration.

Related work

Thanks to @Paalt for runtime findings and downstream testing, and @a-fatah for reporting #399. The null-comparison fix overlaps with @suhailopensource’s #425, credited as co-author on that commit.

Related work: #444 (1.7 upgrade), #380 (OAuth/MCP), and @FatahChan’s #396 (React typing). Broader cleanup and #404/#411 remain separate.

Add the Better Auth 1.7 adapter operations and compound uniqueness support, provide the staged account issuer and OAuth provider migration path, and update examples, generated bindings, tests, and documentation.

📝 Walkthrough

The pull request updates the Convex adapter for Better Auth 1.7.7. It adds consumeOne and incrementOne, required-field and compound-unique validation, and related schema and pagination changes. It adds paginated legacy OAuth record export and cleanup operations, updates OpenID discovery and cross-domain callback handling, and adds OAuth-provider end-to-end tests. Documentation, examples, dependency versions, and migration guidance are also updated.

Priority: ⬆️ High

Change: Feature

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 1dc17

This change moves the Convex adapter to Better Auth 1.7.7 and adds atomic consume and increment operations, stricter required-field and uniqueness checks, and tooling for migrating legacy OAuth clients. The earlier concerns are resolved: the issuer backfill was removed, and explicit ID-set updates intentionally update every listed record. No open blocking risk remains.

105-149: 📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🔵 Trivial | 💤 Low value

Clarify errors raised by candidate rows outside the current page.

assertNoAccountIdentityCollision calls targetAccountIdentity on every candidate row found by index. If a candidate belongs to a provider that is absent from providerIssuers, the call throws Missing trusted issuer mapping for providerId <candidate provider>. The operator then sees an error for a provider that is not part of the page being processed. The migration guide tells operators to fix "that record or mapping and rerun the same page", so a misleading provider name costs time during a maintenance window.

Consider wrapping the candidate resolution to state that the failing row is a collision candidate.

Do not update the probe record for _id in requests.

When a compound unique field is updated through an _id in filter, this code requests numItems + 1. The _id exception bypasses the multi-page error. The loop then patches every record in page, including the extra record used to detect overflow.

For example, numItems: 10 can update and report 11 records. Preserve the requested page boundary, or define a separate non-paginated contract for explicit ID sets.

@coderabbitai Regarding the outside-diff _id in finding: no code change is needed because this path has a separate, intentionally non-paginated atomic ID-set contract.

The high-level OR update first collects the complete deduplicated ID set and calls updateMany with limit: ids.length. The _id in branch then resolves exactly those IDs with ctx.db.get(...) and returns isDone: true; it does not create a pagination probe record for the update loop to trim. The existing should allow atomic ID-set unique updates larger than one page test exercises 201 records and asserts that all 201 update atomically.

Truncating this branch to requestedPageSize would instead break the all-or-nothing compound-uniqueness behavior for explicit OR ID sets.

@sshkeda Confirmed. The implementation uses a separate atomic ID-set path.

updateMany passes the complete deduplicated ID set with limit: ids.length. The _id in path resolves that set with ctx.db.get(...) and returns isDone: true. The 201-record test verifies the expected atomic unique update behavior.

The pagination concern does not apply to this path. I withdraw the finding.

Learning: In `src/client/adapter.ts`, OR-based `updateMany` operations collect a complete deduplicated ID set and invoke the `_id in` update path with `limit: ids.length`. In `src/client/adapter-utils.ts`, `_id in` resolves the complete explicit ID set with `ctx.db.get(...)` and returns `isDone: true`. This intentional non-paginated path preserves atomic compound-uniqueness updates, including ID sets larger than the normal page size.

Would a maintainer be able to approve the workflow run on this PR? The Test and lint workflow is currently sitting at action_required (first-time contributor), so the test suite has never actually executed against these changes — right now the only green check is the CodeRabbit bot. Hard for anyone to evaluate a change this size without a test result.

Some data that may add urgency, from downstream: the published peer range on @convex-dev/better-auth@0.12.5 is better-auth: ">=1.6.11 <1.7.0", but in practice the types break at 1.6.18 — the very first patch inside the allowed window.

We bisected every version against 0.12.5 with ConvexBetterAuthProvider:

better-auth result
1.6.17 typechecks
1.6.18 – 1.6.30 fails

The failure is useSession().data collapsing to never on the component side:

Type 'ReactAuthClient<...>' is not assignable to type 'AuthClient'.
  ... not assignable to 'ReactAuthClient<BetterAuthClientPlugin & { plugins: PluginsWithoutCrossDomain }>'
The types returned by 'useSession().data' are incompatible between these types.
Type '{ user: ...; session: ...; } | null' is not assignable to type 'never'.
Type 'null' is not assignable to type 'never'.

So consumers are effectively pinned to the single exact version 1.6.17, not to "the latest 1.6.x" — which means ~13 releases of fixes are unreachable, including the cold-start async-storage race in 1.6.30 that can intermittently lose auth/transaction context.

Two things that would help downstream regardless of when this PR lands:

  1. Narrowing the published peer range on 0.12.5 to <1.6.18, so the incompatibility surfaces at install time instead of as a type error.
  2. Any read on the account-issuer migration path described here — specifically whether apps that only consume an external OIDC provider (Azure AD, in our case) rather than acting as a provider can skip the @better-auth/oauth-provider re-registration steps.

Happy to test this branch against a non-production Convex deployment and report back if that's useful.

Thanks for working on this. Looking forward to 1.7, particularly the MCP authorization improvements and hydrateSession. Would love to see this land!

I checked out 4e8f35a and ran the package build and test suite locally with 1.7.1. The build passed, with 259 tests passed, 31 skipped, and no type errors. Happy to help test specific migration or authentication flows if there are areas where another downstream test would be useful.

Downstream user here, not a maintainer. Adding a data point in case it helps this move, and to offer testing.

We run six production apps on @convex-dev/better-auth and all six broke at once today when our dependency automation moved better-auth from 1.6 to 1.7. Details and a correction about the affected version range are in #433.

The part worth knowing for this PR: the failure is invisible to typecheck. The removed specifier also appears in dist/plugins/convex/index.d.ts, and tsc doesn't re-check declaration files inside node_modules under the default skipLibCheck. So tsc --noEmit passes and the build only fails when the bundler resolves it. Automated updaters therefore produce a clean-looking green PR that breaks the deploy. That's what makes this more urgent than a normal version bump.

There is currently no published adapter version that works with better-auth@1.7, prerelease channels included: latest is 0.12.5, and both next and alpha point at versions older than latest. Since 1.7 has been the latest tag upstream since 18 August, every fresh unpinned install is broken on day one. This PR looks like the only path forward that exists in writing.

From the outside it seems blocked on process rather than code: "Test and lint" is sitting in action_required because it's a first-time contribution, so the suite has never actually run here.

@sshkeda thank you for doing this work. If it's useful, I'm happy to install this branch against six real production apps and report back on the account.issuer backfill and the consumeOne / incrementOne paths with real data. Just say the word and I'll run it.

To any maintainer reading: even a short note on whether this is the intended path would unblock a lot of people. Right now downstream can't tell whether to wait or to vendor a workaround.

Latest release compatible with @convex-dev/better-auth, which pins
better-auth <1.7.0. The 1.7 upgrade is blocked upstream until

I know this one is a minor annoyance but wanted to make sure it's noted.

$ pnpm peers
Issues with peer dependencies found

✕ unmet peer vitest
  Installed: 5.0.2
  Wanted:
    "^2.0.0 || ^3.0.0 || ^4.0.0":
      better-auth@1.6.30

@convex-dev/better-auth@0.12.5 (current latest) depends on better-auth@1.6.33 at the most recent which has a peer dependency of vitest: "^2.0.0 || ^3.0.0 || ^4.0.0".

Current version is vitest@5.0.3 and it doesn't look like vitest releases fixes to v4 the way that better-auth does to v1.6.

In better-auth@1.7.4 they added support for vitest v5.

So, even if you don't use Better Auth's test utils being forced to depend on 1.6 of better-auth means you either ignore a peer dependency violation or downgrade to vitest v4.

- update better-auth, @better-auth/core and test-utils to 1.7.7
- strip modelKey (added in 1.7.6) before calling component functions,
the component validators rejected it on findOne/findMany/count/
  deleteMany/updateMany
- implement consumeOne natively on deleteOne. Better Auth's atomic
fallback guards on every row field including _creationTime, which the
where validators reject, so every verification consumption failed
- no-op consumeOne/incrementOne in query context, from convex#430
- match the auth-state: prefix on OAuth state verification rows in tests
- add tests for atomic writes against the component schema

Unique checks only looked at field-level `unique` by schema key, so a
unique field renamed with `fieldName` (e.g. user.email -> email_address)
was never checked, and Better Auth 1.7 table-level unique indexes (device
authorization `deviceCode`/`userCode`) were neither enforced nor given a
schema index by the generator.

Checks now cover field-level and table-level (including compound)
constraints, using database field names and the merged document on
update. Schemas generated before this have no index for table-level
constraints, so the check falls back to a scan with a warning instead of
failing writes.

From upstream PR get-convex#430.

Downstream data point for better-auth 1.7.7, which is the first version with the fixes for the Sept 30 advisories (GHSA-965c-763c-88jm, GHSA-r4xp-prcw-77qf). We prototyped the move to 1.7.7 on top of a local patch of 0.12.5, and replacing oidc-provider turned out not to be enough. 1.7.6 and 1.7.7 break the adapter in three more ways, and none of them show up in typecheck or the build. They only appear at runtime.

1. modelKey is passed to adapter methods (1.7.6+). @better-auth/core's adapter factory now calls findOne, findMany, updateMany and deleteMany with a modelKey argument (it isn't in 1.7.5's factory at all). The Convex adapter forwards those args to the component functions, whose validators reject the extra field:

ArgumentValidationError: Object contains extra field `modelKey` that is not in the validator.

For us that turned every rate-limited request into a 500. #430 targets 1.7.1 and #444 targets 1.7.5, so as far as I can tell from the diffs neither handles this yet. Stripping modelKey in the client adapter before runQuery/runMutation fixes it.

2. The consumeOne fallback guards on _creationTime. If the adapter has no native consumeOne, 1.7.7's atomic fallback reads the row and deletes it guarded on every key of that row (Object.keys(row)). For a Convex document that includes _creationTime, which the where validator rejects. In our case that broke the OAuth authorization-code exchange:

ArgumentValidationError: Value does not match validator. Path: .input … field: "_creationTime"

#430's native consumeOne avoids this. #444 has no native version, so it would hit it on 1.7.7.

3. The incrementOne fallback never matches fields that were never written. The fallback guards with eq on fields that may never have been written, using row[field] ?? null. The adapter's eq null filter compares value === null, so an absent field never matches. updateMany then affects 0 rows on every attempt, and the call ends in:

Adapter "convex" could not complete an atomic increment due to contention.

We hit this on OAuth refresh-token rotation (@better-auth/oauth-provider). #430's native incrementOne avoids it too. Separately, treating an absent field as null for eq/ne null filters ((value ?? null) === w.value) might be worth considering, since that is how SQL adapters behave for optional columns.

With those three fixes plus the oidc-provider replacement, our prototype on 1.7.7 passed:

  • sign-in
  • existing 1.6 sessions and their JWTs
  • OAuth client registration and consent
  • code exchange
  • refresh rotation, including reuse detection
  • /convex/jwks

Happy to share the patch or test anything specific.

This lets convex-test's defineTestApp infer the component's API when the
test module is passed directly in its components map.
Raise the supported baseline to >=1.7.7 <1.8 and strip modelKey metadata
before calling Convex component functions. Remove the obsolete required-issuer
migration while retaining optional legacy issuer data and provider export tools.

Update generated schemas, examples and the migration guide. Exercise required
fields and compound constraints through an explicit custom test profile.
Resume from continueCursor rather than the splitCursor inside a page that
has already been returned. Cover full and limited reads, count, updateMany
and deleteMany across a filtered page split.
Treat absent fields as null in static eq-null and ne-null comparisons.
Better Auth's refresh rotation guards an unset revoked field with eq null,
so valid tokens were rejected even with native incrementOne.

Add regression cases for absent, explicit-null and set fields, including
repeated guarded claims. Indexed null and in/not_in behavior remain separate.

Credit @suhailopensource for the same fix in convex#425,
addressing the report by @a-fatah in convex#399.

Route root OpenID discovery to the OAuth provider endpoint when configured,
for eager and lazy registration. Preserve app-defined routes and the existing
non-provider target; keep lazy initialization at request time.

Cover default/custom base paths and provider/non-provider registration.
Document plugin order, database-backed key requirements, matching algorithms
and the distinction between provider discovery and Convex JWT verification.
Keep generic endpoint-key cleanup separate.
